Didn't find the answer I needed via searching or the 5 suggested threads above, so here goes:
Background:
I just got a Samsung Droid Charge from my job, prior to that I had only had a Tmobile G1, completely stock, so I'm VERY new to it. I rooted it using a howto video made by OriginalDobo or whatever, so my phone currently has Root on it, as well as it's running Gummycharged 2.0? I believe.
Problem:
Anyways, the update prompt is driving me CRAZY! Especially knowing that if I'm kind of out of it and hit install while I'm not paying attention it'll messup my root, this angers me. I have Root Explorer, and I had been told (seemingly by an idiot) that if you change the name of the file (File was in the Cache folder, was something update.zip) from .zip to .bak it would 'freeze' it, therefore eliminating my update problem. I switch the name from .zip to .bak, and renaming it made it vanish, not entirely sure of the filename either......
Needless to say, still get the update prompts, just want to undo whatever damage I might have done (phone still works fine, I just dont like a file seemingly vanishing lol, would like to locate where it went..) and get rid of these stupid update prompts every single time I unlock my phone, it's obnoxious beyond belief.

I want to stay rooted......... I don't want the update prompt, that is all.

nobody..... seriously? -_-
but if you factory reset it you can root again
how would that help my situation with the updates, though?
Nooby Root
I cannot help you, but I am familiar with your question as I had the same question on a HTC phone. The answer was that the "root" programers for the HTC Android system were a little more into the HTC system than the Samsung programers have with the Samsung way. That is why I haven't rooted my Charge yet.
This is not to belittle Samsung programmers as they are in no way lesser able, but Android is used different in the Droid and Samsung is not as popular as HTC. Yet!
My feeling is to follow the above suggestions and either unroot the phone and get the update, then re-root it (which should be easy) or let it update and re-root or Factory reset and re-root. Either way should be easy and Samsung has their own way with Android. This is just in my humble opinion.

In this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1340526&page=11 it explains how to root with version 2.3.6 and has a video included in the post. My question is, do I need to go through the "wipe data" step shown in the video or can I skip that step and just go to "install the SuperUser.zip" without wiping the data? I don't want to install a custom ROM right now, I am just interested in rooting the phone. I wish a "one click" method for 2.3.6 would show up, but until then I guess this is the best option. Thank you for any help.
there is no rooting a GS II SR 2.3.6 ROM per say with superone-click or any other rooting method. So far they are all using the same deficiency to achieve root. There are rooted 2.3.6 ROMs out there but they were not done with a so-c.

Thank you. I think I will wait until there is a method to root the stock ROM that is on my phone (2.3.6)...if a method shows up. So the method in the link in my OP is basically flashing an entirely new, but rooted stock ROM on to the phone using the SuperUser file that was included? I guess that sounds OK, but rooting the stock ROM that is on my phone sounds like a better idea to me. Does any one know why the 2.3.6 update can't be rooted like the 2.3.5 version? Again, thank you.
Check out this method of rooting. It worked for me and it only took like 10 mins. Check out this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582) then download the V3 or the newest one but i think that one is the newest. extract the zip file then double click "runme" make sure your phone is connect with the right drivers installed on your computer. Usb debugging and unknown sources both checked then just start the program. It will root your phone and reboot it for you. Cheers

Did you root the 2.3.6 AT&T GII SR with this method? The reason I am asking is because it lists the SkyRocket as working, but it doesn't mention if it is the 2.3.6 update? I think I read in that post that someone with 2.3.6 had an issue with it, but I might be wrong. If you could verify the version and baseband of the device you rooted with this method it would help alot. Agian, thanks for the help. I want to make sure things all line up as good as they can before I pull the triger. I need this phone for day to day stuff, but I hate the AT&T crap-ware that is loaded.

To answer your question, I don't think you have to wipe data if you simply want to root your phone using this method. If you were installing a complete ROM, then yes you would want to wipe.
Just installing the superuser.zip does not require a wipe.

Ok, I just rooted using the method I posted in the OP. It seems to have worked great. If anyone is wondering, you indeed do not need to wipe data if you are going to just use the "Superuser.zip". Just make sure you follow the directions and keep retrying to install the SuperUser file if it aborts...like the post says, it will eventually work. It took three times for me. Thanks for all of the replies and help, you guys are going to get me addicted to this stuff. Off to get Titanium backup!
I was able to root it using the superuser.zip as well. It also took me 3 tries for it to work. I'm on 2.3.5.

Why do I have 2.3.5?
I bought my skyrocket just last week (AT&T), and I'm fairly sure I checked for an update via "software update" under settings when I got it.
Nonetheless, under "About phone" under "android version" it says right there "2.3.5."
I always err on the side of being too paranoid. It's safe to assume that's not a type-O or the ghost of Steve Jobs trying to get revenge for jumping ship, and it's safe to use the superoneclick 2.3.1?
And, even if I did have 2.3.6, the rooting would fail, it wouldn't brick/set fire to my phone, correct?

If it says you have 2.3.5...you have 2.3.5. Only a select amount of people got the 2.3.6 update and then it was pulled. I havn't seen an exact reason why. Everything I have read supports 2.3.5 for the SuperOneClick. 2.3.5 has exploits that it uses that the 2.3.6 update covered up (fixed) and the SuperOneCLick uses the exploit(s) to root the OS while it is running. As of yet, this cannot be done with 2.3.6. I like the method linked in the OP because it adds CWM which allows for Nandroid backups. Read as much as you can about whichever method you choose and make sure to ask questions if you have any before doing it. But it really is simple (both ways) if you make sure to follow the directions exactly. Good luck.
Yes what he said^^ and not it wont brick it you use super oneclick on 2.3.6 it just wont root you.
It really very simplevwhich ever method you use. If you choose to use the odon method there is even a video walk through. But follow all directions exactly or you will have problems. Heres the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4xGTSrFl1oy
I have done a lot of reading her about rooting and updating my TF300. After getting a headspinning amount of information, I'd like someone to verify what I think I know.
I have a TF300, stock ROM, no root, running US .17. I have not received any updates after going to Settings/about tab/update and pressing the update button (I get "no updates found') I have cleared DM and CM client and rebooted several times, but no updates are found. I have tried on several WiFI networks I have access to.
1. I should be able to root using one of several one click methods I have found here, correct?
2. Once rooted and root keeper is installed, I should be able to update to .29 and keep root, correct?
3. A manual update to US .29, once rooted, will cause me to lose root, correct?
4. Will I receive Over The Air update once rooted? If not, how can I update to US .29 without losing root?
5. Is this the best path to take, or is there another path that would be easier for a newb like me (I know just enough about Android to be dangerous)? What I mean by another path is, should I manually update to US .29 and wait for a one click solution to come out later, all the while enjoying the new update.
6. All this is to fix some lag issues I have with all browsers....Tried Stock, Dolphin, Firefox, Opera...all the same. Some FC and others just hang for up to 30 seconds, even in Performance mode (With only one tab open!) So this will "FIX" those lag issues, correct?
Thank you for your time
If you're still on .17, root with sparkyroot, save it with ota rootkeeper, update to .29 (if it isn't there, they've been posted in many places on the forums), and restore root. As for fixing lag issues, it depends on what you do, rooting alone won't change anything, but you can try out the different tweaks available.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
Missed a couple of your questions, yes, you will still receive ota updates if you're rooted, as long as you don't unlock the bootloader. This is the easiest way to root too, all you need to do is follow sparkyroot's instructions and back up your root.

One question always leads to another
Thank you! But of course, I now have just a few more questions.
I do understand rooting alone will not help me with my lag issues. I'm hoping the update to .29 will. I am not a power user, but I would like the option open to me later to install ROMs, hence why I want to root now.
1. I thought I had to unlock bootloader to root. With sparkyroot I do not?
2. Since I have not unlocked bootloader, will rooting alone void my warranty? I thinking not since I should be able to unroot with no trace, correct?
3. I thought, (or read somewhere here, I think) that if I do a MANUAL install, I would lose root and be unable to regain it. If I get an update PUSHED to me by ASUS, Ill be able to regain root with rootkeeper. Is that correct?
I'd like to thank everyone here, by the way, for all the information I have gotten in my 30 days of owning this tablet and lurking here.

No need to unlock for root. They are completely unrelated. Just update manually and use THIS THREAD to root .29. There's even a one-click tool like you wanted. Don't forget to press Thanks for miloj.
Oh, and after you've updated to .29 and rooted; don't forget to use OTA rootkeeper to backup root.
If Asus releases a new update it may save your root.

He's still on the .17 software, so no need to do that. Just use the sparkyroot method, backup with rootkeeper and then update.
Edit to add that no, rooting will not void the warranty, just unroot before you need to send it back.

Yeah, he's still on .17, but he's not getting the OTA prompt. He wants to manually upgrade, and you can't restore root after a manual upgrade, so my advice still stands.
Thank you both! Rooted with Sparky root and backed up with OTA rootsaver. Now I have downloaded the .29 update from ASUS webpage and installed. It says I have lost root.
I tried to restore root with OTA and it says SU restored, however it does not show that I have root access. Tring to use Titanium BU also shows I do not have root.
Tried then to go back to Sparkyroot and try again, but to no avail. Do I now have to downgrade back to .17 to gain root because I messed it up, or is there a solution? I was rooted for several hours before the upgrade to .29.

Ah, ok. Didn't realize you couldn't restore if you updated manually.
Yes, it is as I thought. Tried Sparkys and miloj's root program and I can not get root. I ran the program twice from my lap top. Driver's for TF300 show installed in Device manager (Windows 7). ASUS sync was installed in laptop and recognized TF300 but the program was not running during root attempt.
When I run Superuser and attempt to update SU binaries, I get "Failed" when it attempts pathway to write update.
Attempted to restore using OTA rootkeeper but all I get is "SU Restored". Check boxes indicate no root.
Any other ideas?
Confirmed I am on .29 from a MANUAL update.
Tried again from home computer. Ran Sparky and miloj program. I get error stating
"failed to copy 'Superuser.apk' to '/data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk' : not a directory"
Tablet reboots and says I should be rooted but obviously not. Superuser not written to tablet

Can you just install Superuser from the market? The su binaries might be there and the app just isn't installing. I may be wrong, not sure how the automated program works, but it can't hurt.
Just tried that. Installs fine but when I try to update binaries, I get error writing to filepath, telling me there is no root. I'm hoping this makes 10 posts for me so I can actually go to Sparky's thread in Dev. forum and ask directly. Thanks for your help tho. Ill still be monitoring here if anyone has a solution

Try manually doing the code from miloj's thread?
While the instructions in his thread are clear, they are way past my level of expertise. I would not attempt it without someone standing next to me. I have not entered code since the 1980's Compute! magazine days.

Well, I can't think of anything else, you could just use the downgrade method, that's easy enough. The code really is just copy/paste though.

Your problem is not with the superuser apk.
The actual root is when you write an "su" binary to system and makes it executable (there is some access control stuff in between, but it's what's happening in essence).
So - your trouble is not with the installation nor the messages from superuser.apk - it's with the actual rooting method.
Make absolutely sure your adb drivers are working and that you've got the files "debugfs", "su" and the other debugfs file on top of the .bat file, which is the installation script, in the same directory whilst running the .bat file.
Agreed. I posted this in development.
It was surprisingly more difficult to install the drivers correctly than anticipated.
For those noobs like me, here's a step-by-step for installing the drivers before running the root method.
http://transformerprimeroot.com/tra...all-transformer-prime-usb-drivers-on-windows/
Please note that before using the step-by-step guide above, I also had to put the tf300 in Camera Mount to even get the "“ASUS Android Composite ADB Interface" option to show up in Device Manager.
Once you get this far, you can manually update the driver (found in the sparkym3 "Drivers" folder from the download) via the step-by-step.

I have to run Good for Enterprise for work email. My company has a root restriction in place where I can not use Good if my phone is rooted. The app looks for SU and Superuser.apk. On my old phone (LG Revo) I could root, put a custom ROM on, unroot and then use Good with no problems. When I wanted to change the ROM, I would just reroot the custom ROM and do the whole process over. All the rooting and unrooting was through the ADB shell.
Is this possible to do on the SIII? Or does anyone know of a way to hide root from Good?
Thanks for your help.

I've been struggling with the same issue; I was able to use an app called "OTA RootKKeeper" to protect root and make it appear as if my phone was not rooted. In order to make this work I had to uninstall Good, protect the root (unroot) with the app, and the go through the setup process with Good all over again. I was running CM10 jelly bean for a couple of weeks and using GFE without issue.
In interest of full disclosure I recently had to revert back to the stock ROM and this workaround was not successful. So I'm not sure if the app is checking for only for root access or if they now also look for the superuser.apk as you described.

My company uses Zenprise which is similiar. It checks for root. I am runnong supersu. I just disable supersu within the app, which removes the binary and essentially unroota the phone.
If I need to do anything that requires roos I simply remove zemprise as a device admin and re-enable supersu.

Hi, I'm sorry to ask this question as I'm sure it's one that "floods" your boards more often than most but I have not found a decent answer yet in the several topics I've browsed. Basically, like the topic says, I want my phone back the way it was before I rooted it and before I installed the custom ROM of Jelly Bean. I want it to go back to before like it was, so I can start receiving OTA updates again and get the "official" Jelly Bean update from Verizon. I don't want to do the whole "unlock your boot loader" thing anymore. I want my phone to be able to boot up the right way and NOT have Verizon try to brick my phone.
The main problems with these other topics I've browsed are 1: I don't want my phone to be "restored to the point that I could take it back into Verizon" because A: I don't need to take it back to Verizon and B: I still need all of my phone data. I don't want to lose my pictures, contacts, etc. Also, 2: because all of these other topic speak in gibberish to me. Everyone who responds to other people asking this question speak all technical and say it as if the topic creator has done this 1000 times. I need a step-by-step response PLEASE on exactly what I need to do. Saying "oh yeah use odin" tells me NOTHING. I need to know EVERY step to do this, I don't even know wth odin is.
Also, last question, I am backing my phone up by hooking it up to the computer via USB and dragging each folder and everything into a folder on my computer as a backup. That being said, since I want to UNDO my root and custom ROM and everything, are there any files I should NOT copy to my computer that might mess this up or make my phone think it's still rooted or anything?
If someone could PLEASE help me with a detailed guide on how to do this I would GREATLY appreciate it. Thank you!

Ok, so basically, you just want to unroot your phone? Go into super user and there is an option to unroot your phone OR, use any file explorer like ES explore, root explore and navigate to this directory /system/xbin and delete su file.
May I ask, what you about to do is really a big waist of time, it doesn't help you anyway in installing custom rom or make your phone run better!! what is the reason for this??

1st: I bolded the part in your statement that I was talking about in my first post. I appreciate the help a lot, so no offense, but I have no idea what that sentence even meant.. Will you please speak more clearly, and, to be honest, dumb it down a lot for me. I seriously know nothing about this stuff.
2nd: I don't want help installing custom ROMs. I want to go back to the way my phone was BEFORE having to use any custom ROMs. In other words, I don't even want Jelly Bean on my phone the way it is anymore. I want Ice Cream Sandwich back (I'm pretty sure that was the last one, right? Lol) so that from THERE I can update using VERIZON's Jelly Bean update.
The reason is that I've had problems with my phone that I NEVER had before rooting/downloading this custom "nightly" ROM. The main problem, I can not play ANY games on my phone without it crashing minutes in. I have a Galaxy S3, for crying out loud, so the games obviously aren't too much for the phone itself to handle. I think the nightly ROM I downloaded was just a bit buggy.
Another main reason I want to is because I miss all of the developer options my phone had before, i.e screenshots by swiping hand over screen, Kies Air, etc.
If someone could please help me a bit more in depth I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks again!

Thank you!

I assume you didn't root yourself. I would ask whoever did it for you to undo it.

Unfortunately if you want to go back to stock ICS (before the updates and everything) without root or unlocked boot loader you are going to lose all your phone data. That's the price you pay for rooting. But you are doing the right thing by copying all the files you want to your computer, I assume you're copying your internal SD card. The best you could do for apps is to use titanium backup and backup your apps, and SMS.
Then follow this guide to go back to ICS

If you can't do this guide or don't understand it then I agree with the previous poster and get whoever rooted your phone top undo it.
Now that you are back on ICS reroot using the steps in the same guide I just linked download titanium backup and restore your apps and sms.
You can then select the option in the supersu app to full unroot.

I did it myself, eventually, but it was just as hard. So let me get this straight, you're saying that I need to follow that guide (I'm assuming the part that says how to Odin back from ROM etc), then I need to reroot in order for titanium backup to work so that I can restore everything, THEN unroot again? When you say reroot, will following that guide cause me to become unrooted already? Thx.

You should follow section 5 if that guide to return your phone to sick ICS. It will be just like you got it from Verizon. This means no root and your internal SD wiped.
Then you will want to root that to restore your titanium backup that you've already made. Again that guide will show you how.

lol ok I'll do that. And last Qs (I think lol) unrooting again is just as fast as clicking unroot in superuser? and then last but not least once I do will I be able to update OTA to jelly bean again? Cuz I still want JB I just want official JB. If worst comes to worst I just use that Kies Air program? Thanks

I'm really sorry to do this but.. Lol. This honestly should be my last Q. The rest seems quite clear to me but is the part of that guide under section 5 titled "*Flashing a Stock Radio with Odin or a Custom Recovery" applicable to what I'm trying to do as well? It's kind of offset like it's something optional/different but do I need to do that also to take my phone back today? Thanks.
