Hello people, just looking for the safer and best method to ROOT my HOX with 1.85..
Could you point me out?
thanks in advance
On the dev forum there is only one way to root 1.85 currently and it involves using the att update exploit as att blocked their app internal downloads method...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
The current method in the dev section works fine apparently. The old way of rooting 1.85 was a far bigger PITA.
What they all said. The current way is simplisticly genius. Very clean as far as toot methods go.

Wrong thread but no other option
I have had a rooted 1.85 HOX, unlocked with TWRP 2.2.1.4 with stock ROM. I was trying to install CM10 however I keep getting a 'Status 7' error. From what I gather its has to do with how the phone was rooted, which to my knowledge there is only one way for the 1.85 (2 if you consider the script and manual as separate). I complete the manual root process twice the first time after i pulled the phone out of the box and the second after my 'sdcard' wouldn't mount while trying to flash different recovery images to the phone with the ultimate goal of installing CM10. So my question: Why can't I flash a ROM?
btw I guess if you're a super n00b on the xda forums you can only post on threads that are off topic until you are allowed to post to the 'real' ones....
I think the status 7 errors are build.prop errors. If you manually wipe system before flashing it should erase the current build.prop which should clear the conflict. Make a nandroid first just in case.

Alright, every time I ever flash a new ROM I always factory wipe, cache & dalvik wipe, as well as the system wipe (especially if its a new ROM type) and NEVER forget to do a nandroid. It didn't seam to make a difference for the CM10 ROM, I even wiped the virtual sd card. I'd like to make some post on the HOX CM10 forum (it seams a few other people are have the problem but no one is addressing it) but I might have to chat with you to get my post count high enough...

Yes, currently this is the only working method for 1.85: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
There was a one-click method, but it no longer works.

- Have you tried flashing any other ROMs?
- That version of TWRP is outdated. I doubt that is the problem. But it wouldn't hurt (and might help) to have the current version.
- You didn't happen to have relocked the bootloader somewhere along the way? I don't know if that would give you 'Status 7' error. But sometimes its good to consider the obvious solutions.
- You didn't happen to have flashed any of the recoveries for the international (Tegra3) version, did you?

So like several folks on here. I jumped the gun and installed the latest 1.85 RUU I know bad idea...... since I'm on stock with no root.
1) Does anyone know a what to trick the RUU install package to force it to install an earlier version.
2) If someone has the time, I'm willing to give access to my phone to try to figure out root for 1.85 or a trick for the RUU package.
Again like a lot of folks, I'm approaching that return window and would love to have this fixed.
I'm willing to try to help any way possible.
Thanks

Dude, just install CWM, then download the super su package and flash out on cwm, ban you got root

This has already been discussed at length, and doesn't need yet another thread. There is currently no method to root on 1.85 with stock CID.
This is one of the recent discussions, and it seems like a couple people in your same boat are trying some things. Jump into that discussion, if you like.

Can't do that unless the bootloader is unlocked. OP wasn't entirely clear, but it sounds like this is not the case.

That's my point. I understand there currently isn't a way to root on 1.85, I was simply inquiring to see if maybe there was a way to roll back to a previous version and then go from there. I've been following most of the threads on this but thinking out loud, there has to be way to revert back, I'm just not smart enough to figure it out and I've tried dozens of times over the past few day.

Let me clarify then: there is currently no way to root or install a previous (lower version number) RUU.
Is it possible? Sure, virtually everything is possible. But no way has been found yet.
With no sdcard slot there just isn't a way. If we had sdcard we could make a goldcard and install older firmware. When the one x ships with the 1.85 or higher firmware and there's no choice but to root it I'm sure an exploit will be found. It will also be rootable if at&t ever allows bootloader unlocking on htcdev
Hello everybody i am posting because my One X is messed up. I bought the phone from radio shack and i love it. When i first bought it i rooted it and then downloaded fun root apps like titanium backup, and set cpu. I heard about custom roms and i wanted to try one. So i followed the instructions given on the website. Im sorry i dont remember what website it was that i downloaded it from. So i downloaded Clockworkmod from play store and installed it on my phone. Then copied the rom to my sd card. I tried to flash is but nothing would happen. So i tried to boot into recovery mode and i woould get a legal actions page, then my bootloader would say ***tampered*** ***locked*** ***security warning***. So then i tried to unlock my boot loader via htc dev and i got the error 160 mid not allowed. So i wanted to unroot and restore so i deleted supersu and the su files from my phone and i used root checker to check if unrooted. it said *not properly rooted*. But my phone can still view and download root apps.
Then i tried to restore my phone to stock, but when i pressed factory reset i would get the same legal actions page and my boot loader would say *tampered* *locked* *security warning*. And my att software update doesnt work. when i press on it it says htc dm has stopped and after that it does nothing when i press the button. And many apps close unsuspectingly. I would like to completely revert my phone to stock so i can start over again. thank you.
I have the HTC One X dual core usa version
i bought it at radio shack
It is on AT&T
Sounds like you might have tried to install a rom for the international version. Be thankful it didn't work.
You can't unlock via htcdev without changing your CID because AT&T is blocking it.
The version of CWM in the Play Store (ROM Manager?) is not supported for this phone and will not work.
To restore to stock, you need to flash the RUU for your current version. Check your software version in Settings.
This may come across as rude but you are obviously aware of XDAs existence since you are posting here, why on earth would you do anything to your phone without FIRST checking XDA to make sure it's kosher? I see way too many threads like this and it boggles my mind.
You guys don't want to come to XDA for help with your ROMs and mods, but as soon as you screw something up you come running to us for assistance.

First, you need to do A LOT more reading before you try to unlock your bootloader and flash ROMs. You missed a ton of steps and it is pretty clear you didn't do your homework. I am not trying to be rude, but trying to save you from ruining your phone.
Check what firmware you have. I assume 1.85 if you have root, but please check. If you want to be able to re-root your phone do not use the 2.20 RUU! Go download the RUU . Follow the instructions and run the RUU to return your phone to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1670238 (1.85 RUU)
You can then start the process over with rooting and unlocking. You must have SuperCID before you can unlock your bootloader. Use TWRP and not CWR because it is not supported on the AT&T One X. You must NEVER try installing a ROM meant for the international version. (Stay in this section of the forum!) Once you root and unlock, you will not be able to download OTAs from HTC.

I edited my reply and included two links. First is to the 1.85 RUU. Make sure you don't have 2.20 by going to Settings -> About -> Software Information and look at Software Number. As long as you don't have 2.20, download that RUU, plug your phone in, and run it. IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING! so make sure to back up the contents of your SD card first.
The second link is to the AT&T One X resource Roll-up. Everything you need to root/unlock/rom will be in there.
The steps are in this order:
1. Root using the 1.85 root
2. Get SuperCID
3. Go to HTCDev.com to get unlock token, flash unlock token, unlock bootloader
4. Flash recovery (TWRP)
5. Flash ROM
Make sure you read ALL of the instructions first!! And I would recommend CleanROM once you get that far.

yes when i press check for updates nothing happens. im not sure if this is the reason but after the RUU was done and my phone was put back to stock, a popup for att software update came up and it downloaded and i had the update. i went to about then software info the software number is 1.85 so i am very confused.
I'm thinking about romming an HTC One X for Rogers and I've tried looking up information about installing custom roms. I know I need to unlock the bootloader first and that TWRP is likely the easiest method in order to rom. But I've read some conflicting things. Does it matter which version of the software I have? There just seems to be multiple guides.
Would this guide work?

I'm happy to do the research, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

You can root and unlock 1.94 then flash recovery and rom fine.
Rogers HTC One X can be unlocked through the HTCdev site. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install TWRP and flash any evita rom you want.

Any variant of the HOX can be bootloader unlocked via HTCDev except for the AT&T version. Firmware numbers for you will not matter in the slightest.

So I was able to unlock the bootloader. To install TWRP I installed GooManager and Installed "OpenRecoveryScript".
When I try to reboot the phone into recovery, nothing happens.
Is there a guide how to use TWRP. Most of the guides seem pretty basic, but I don't even know if I have it installed properly. I'm trying to install ViperX

Nevermind. I just installed using command prompt following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1814914 this guide. Thanks Athrun88!
Is there a specific directory I should be putting the roms in order to install them or does it not matter?

hey! that's my guide! haha, glad to see my first real contribution be somewhat of a success.
As long as it's in the root directory (not in a folder) of the internal SDcard, you'll be fine. Also, make sure you make a backup of your stock ROM just in case you need to go back to it.
Another thing, copy down your APN settings (word by word) from your stock ROM. Not sure if Rogers is the same as Telus, but Telus needs two APNs to get LTE enabled. If you could PM those to me as well, I could add them to my guide as well. Thanks.
Ughhh. Tried to install ViperX 2.6.0 using TWRP however it didn't work. Says Checking Model ID then "assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device")==
Any ideas?

Might have answered my own question, but can I only install Roms in this dev section because I'm on Roger (so no international mods)?

Yes after some research, I quickly figured that... Phew.
Is there any way to tell if the rom is stable or not for the AT&T/Rogers model?

I think that will be the first one I will install. So I have backed up my original default Rogers/HTC backup using TWRP and will download titanium backup?
Anything else you can/would recommend before I proceed?
The help has been great and much appreciated.

So if you would like toto back up your apps than yes u can use titanium but yes make a back up sounds like u already did of your stock rom ...download viper 2.00 put it on your SD where you'll remember. To find it ... Once in twrp hit wipe menu ...wipe system ..factory reset ...and wipe dalvic cache than go back to the home menu in twrp and click install and find viper and this is very important since you wiped system you'll see in viper menu flash stock kernel or install rom ...hit install rom and go from there if you don't you'll be stuck. At. HTC dev screen and have to get back into recovery

One last important thing in case u didn't know
If you're ever stuck in bootloop this will do the trick to get into bootloader and back to recovery
Turn on, hold power 10-15 seconds, until screen goes black, let off, press n hold volume down, press power just 2-3 seconds, let off power button but continue holding vol. Down
LoL wow, already done. Using the rom now.
Wow, that was easy. Not sure if I should have checked some of the options (like one to enable exchange mail, and another for better sound). But it was so easy I guess I can always just redo it.
Was starting to think rooting maybe wasn't worth it (last root I did was on the original Nexus). Just going through all the features on ViperX, I'm glad I did.

Stay in the "AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL" forum (look up top) and you'll be fine. ROMs are in the Development subforums.
Isn't it annoying how they hide all the ROMs from us? They really make you dig for them! (<----click there!)

okay so I entered "fastboot flash boot boot.img" after I replaced the boot.img file. It went back to the bootloader screen and selected recovery. It stays black.
I tried resetting the phone, going back to recoverty, get sent to the TWRP app. When i look under install under the sdcard, I dont see any roms.
Retrying a second time, reentered "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and am now stuck on the HTC Screen with red text "this build is for development purposes... etc"
what am i doing wrong?
If I ever actually get my phone into recovery mode I'll let you know -.-
Edit: Alrighty. That was annoying but I got it done. Shoulda known not to bother with automatic things -.-
Ended up having to manually flash TWRP to finally get it to stick. I think I'm going Nocturnal for now. Seems to have alot of goodies in it that I might enjoy. Eventually I'll probably "step down" to the slickest, smoothest, fastest ROM I can find and manually add in everything I intend to use though.
Been a LOOOOOOONG time since I had a device you could even flash though so I'll probably end up flashing excessively for a while. Havn't had one since my Xperia X1 was ran over and rained on... HEYYYY... X1... One X (1X) ! It's destiny
Sorry you need to fast boot boot.img first

Yeah this is what i did, but i was unable to get it to recovery. In wiping the data i seemed to have wided the sd card clean. It shows as unmounted in the TWRP mount menu. I have no idea what to do from here.
I cannot find the rom anywhere, even after i fast boot boot.img

Download on your PC and either try to transfer to SD card that way by mounting or adb push the file to your phone once in recovery. If that doesn't work you will have to run back to 2.20 and reroot.
When you were wiping you didn't press wipe external storage because that's what wipes the data off your SD.

Speaking of flash all the things, I'm already considering getting rid of Nocturnal. Apparently it makes it difficult to access the menu button. Several of the programs I use offer no other method of accessing the menu.

Its quite simple, as others have mentioned just stick to the Development and Original Development subforums in this "AT&T, ROgers HTC One X, Telstra One XL" section and you will be fine.
Or just stick to my index thread, which is an organized list all the ROMs and other mods: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
If you wander into the forum section simply labelled "HTC One X" with no mention of AT&T, you are in the wrong place (forum section for the international version).

Which Nocturnal ROM, there are like 4 of them (or more)? If its a Sense based Nocturnal ROM, just remap the "recents" button as with stock 2.20 in Settings>Display, gestures & buttons>Buttons. But I don't think there is an option to bring back the horrid 3-bar menu button for apps that don't have one built-in (if that is what you are looking for).
Not sure about the AOSP Nocturnal ROM, haven't used that one myself. But the AOSP ROMs usually have a button remap in settings as well.
Hi.
I thought my root had an option to keep it rooted after OTA update, but I was wrong...
Found the right thread right away (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756352), so I'll do that right after work.
Only question (and I couldn't post it in the thread):
Will the method listed up there wipe my data in any way?
Meaning should I backup my on-board or external SD RAM (other than for the usual "be safe" reason)?
Thanks!
The link you provided just informs you how to use Odin not how to root.
You're probably looking for Open1your1eyeso other thread here:

You retain your data, it only gives you root and/or unlocked bootloader. Nothing else is flashed or changed.

OOPS, so sorry...
Had the wrong link in clipboard...
Yes, I meant the thread you posted.
But I'm guessing the principle is the same - updating boot chain and stuff, and not reloading a ROM, so I'm guessing the same still applies - it doesn't change my data
I still vaguely remember from my old Fascinate how in some cases I had to re-install everything, but I also played with a few ROMs back then, so my memory being a little hazy, I wanted to be sure I wasn't gonna wipe my phone...
Thanks!
