I'd like to be able to make calls via GSM network (not via wifi/voip) with my SIM card in my Xoom MZ601 (running a rooted stock ROM 3.2).
I saw some screenshots of some custom ICS ROMs, such as the "code android" ROM which apparently has a feature to do real calls (over GSM) with a Xoom (see pic in attachment).
Now I was wondering:
1) can you really make true GSM calls with "code android" ROM?
2) do other custom ROMs offer this feature too, such as Team EOS?
3) does this even need a ROM at all or will merely an app do the same job on Android 3.2?
I am not certain, but I believe it was harder than just putting the phone.apk on tablet. Your question has been asked before, have a search if you want.
Also, Skype? May seem obvious, but..
it would need cell radios.
try skype/voip/etc.
I don' think it is possible since I heard people say it doesn't have the hardware for it. Though I'm not sure if that's really the issue here. Anyhow from what I heard they have SMS enabled ROMS or mod.

I'm more of an android guy but my dad uses a hd7 that he also will use to tether. The current way he is doing it is that he is on NoDo (pre-mango) and the dial up hack (his HD7 is chevron unlocked). I was interested in flashing a Mango rom that has wifi internet sharing so I searched and think I have the method down for the most part but just want to make sure.
1. Charge battery up to 50%+
2. Hold power down while rebooting and go into OSPL mode
3. Flash RSPL (the temporary one) (basically follow directions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1195647)
This is where I'm not quite sure if the steps are correct
4. Download the rom file and launch the .exe file (the phone is a TMO HD7)
Am I missing anything? I'm sorry if there is a how-to flash a rom but I didn't find a how-to that had a step by step.
Also, is there a major difference between the roms in the development section?

You've got the basic idea, yes. I think for a full ROM you *might* need to use HSPL instead of just RSPL, but I'm not sure (and if you can do RSPL you can do HSPL too, easily). Custom ROMs typically come pre-packaged in a "RUU" program - that's ROM Update Utility. If you want one that's just available as a binary image, you can download the RUU separately.
The major differences between the ROMs will be things like:
What devices are supported (HD7 = Schubert).
What features are supported (not all Mango ROMs will have Internet Sharing via WiFi, for example).
What tweaks are included (most should come pre-unlocked, at least).
Anything that *doesn't* work (watch ut for this list).
What update mechanisms the ROM supports (custom CABs are common, for example).
Generally speaking, the DFT ROMs are pretty good, though many people use their ROMs as a base to build in additional capabilities.

I figured out the Schubert information just reading about it and the rest I figured out while browsing over the roms. I think I'm going to go with this one for my first flash.

DeepShining is popular as a high-capability ROM (lots of features), but be sure you read the Known Issues list. Things like possible problems with Connection Setup may be a problem if you use it for its legit purpose (fixing connection settings) very often, and the inability to use the CAB sender means future updates will probably have to be full ROM re-flashing.
If your dad has any app data on the phone that he'd like to preserve, such as game progress or things like that, let me know before you flash his phone. I've got an HTC data backup app that I'm ready to start a limited alpha test of. It's actually ahrd to find people who can test it on Mango though, due to the low number of people with interop-unlocked HTC phones, so a custom ROM that supports TouchXplorer (same DLL needed for my backup app) might make a good test. The app isn't even beta quality yet - I'm still adding things to it, and the codebase is a bit of a mess - but it works for the features it does have, most of the time.
So I live in Mexico and just bought a Focus Flash...
I tried to use it as a hotspot but I couldn't... My carrier supports tethering and it uses the same bands as at&t...
When I try to use the internet sharing options it shows a message saying that I have to call at&t...
Does anyone knows how to make this option work outside of the US?
Also, I have a similar problem when I try to use the samsung's video call app.
It shows a message saying my device isn't supported, is this also because I'm using it with a different carrier?

If I can't find a solution for this, I'll probably start looking for roms from different countries to see if flashing it helps.

First of all, if you're using an AT&T ROM (which it sounds like you are) and you can find a way to flash an "International" ROM to it, I'd suggest you do that. AT&T puts a lot of restrictions on their phones that you, as a non-customer, have no reason to put up with (personally, I don't see any reason for their customers to put up with it either, but that's another issue).
Beyond that, if by some lucky chance your current firmware is compatible with WindowBreak, or at least you have a backup with old enough firmware, then yes, it is possible to strip out all of the limitations on the "Internet Sharing" feature. For one example, search the Dev&Hacking sub-forum for "Interop Unlock + Internet Sharing".
Beyond that... you'll either need to exchange your phone, find some other way around the problem (for example, you should be able to use wired tethering; it's unofficial but available for most if not all Windows phones if you know where to look), or wait until we find new hacks. Any of the following would work: a way to interop-unlock gen2 Samsung phones with current firmware (install WP7 Root Tools and use a provxml processing app), a way to flash a stock ROM to gen2 Samsungs (either replace your current ROM with an international one, or downgrade it to one that is compatible with WindowBreak), or a way to flash custom ROMs (which all come with this feature fully enabled).

But I finally got to tango with tethering and it seems that I'll be able to get the last firmware update as well =D
So it is all good... I'm still using the at&t rom
I don't have video calls but I don't think I need them that much... If I want to have videochat I'll just use skype =)

I have been a WP user for a very long time (A journey which started with HTC Artemis)
I had started using the custom ROM's provided by some amazing chef's over here compared to what MS was dishing out.
I am not having the WP7 from the first day it had launched (Started with the mozart and now on lumia 800)
I have not yet tried to root the mobile or install a custom ROM in this as for the first time I am loving what MS has given.
Since there are quite a lot of people here who are using custom ROM and also rooting their devices I was wondering what I am missing.
If you have rooted your device or installed a custom ROM please let me know the advantages of rooting and/or installing a custom ROM.
I had searched the threads and could not find an answer anywhere so if this was posted somewhere before apologies.
This has definitely been asked (and answered) before, but the short version is that custom ROMs give deeper access to the system (ability to replace system files, which are locked in ROM, and ability to completely bypass the security system, for example). They also can include the best firmware features from multiple different OEMs. Current "rooting" ability gives less complete access than a custom ROM (for example, native EXEs aren't supported yet, although that's being worked on and should be available soon), but also maintains the OS's ability to receive official updates. Stock ROMs are also less likely to have bugs than custom ROMs, though they typically also offer fewer features.
Of course, part of it comes down to the model of phone you have. LGs can be rooted, but don't get custom ROMs. Lumia 710s (and a very lucky few Lumia 800s) can get custom ROMs, but we havent' been able to root their stock ROMs.
I had checked a few threads but did not find the complete list of benifits in one central place hence this thread.
I am giving below the benefits of rooting based on my little knowledge. It would be great if some one would be able to add to this very small list.
Pro's of rooting
1) Can install the best firmware for your phone regardless of your carrier and your location.
2) Can side load apps which are not approved by MS and not in the marketplace
3) SMS tones
4) Using the phone as mass storage (Not sure about this one)
5) Change the available fonts and metro theme colors
A very small list from me so it would be really great if someone could expand and also correct if the above list is wrong.
I just really dont know if I should custom rom mine. I have so many sms and mms, couple of my games are finished, and final fantasy is still halfway through. Carbon isnt in the marketplace anymore but I still have it. Also messages in whatsapp viber and kik, risking all those for full unlock and homebrew apps that I need but lived without since I bought a titan. If it were possible to export messages, and game progress, and import them back, then I'd definitely custom rom mine, else I'll just have to get a lumia 920 and then do a custom rom.
Ability to send all files through bluetooth to other phones is also great, you should really consider jailbreaking.

And after you have the Nokia apps (Maps, Music, Drive, City Lens & Counters) you won't let the custom rom's go!!!

Thanks sianto I really appreciate it, but I've read some posts around that backing up via cabsender and after installing a custom rom, you won't be able to use that backup anymore as the ID changes per rom install. Is this true? Is it not like in android where you perform a full nand backup and restore anytime?

Well, it is unstable sometimes! But you just need to copy the folder xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx
x: is something random
from an temp folder called Windows Phone Update C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update
to an safe location, and (after flashing) place it back (with still an extra copy on a safe location) and just use R.

I tried to follow the guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871525 to change the secphone.apk in CleanRom 5 to allow call recording but it didn't work... it shows the record button but when you hit it, nothing happens. I tried the best I could to try and trace the programming but I have very minimal programming experience and it's all in Python so I don't really know all this android stuff... do we have any sweet devs that could get this to work on our Verizon S3s??
I know there is a thread already in AT&T section and they say it can't be done til official drops, is that right?
I haven't read that entire thread but that mod was created for the international version of the S3 (i9300), not the US version (which uses totally different hardware).
Call recording definitely can work on this phone, it was built into the stock ROM (though not enabled by default) and other Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs based on stock either enabled it by default (I still use Synergy 1.7 for this reason) or could flash a mod to enable it (CleanROM could get it through Kinda Crap Mods if I remember correctly). Maybe once the actual, final JB release for the Verizon S3 comes out it will be added. I really wish more ROMs made an effort to support call recording, it's invaluable in, for example, journalism to be able to record conversations (with both parties' consent of course).

It's been a while since I rooted an Android device. And I've never rooted a phone. So, questions. I'd like to do everything possible to have the phone ready before contacting Verizon to get on their network. I'm guessing my steps should be:
a) root
b) TWRP
c) Magisk
d) latest Oxygen
e) all Play Store updates
f) move SIM (there are two slots?? which one??)
g) work w/Verizon to get voice & messaging working
h) use OP's app to migrate apps & data from Pixel2XL
i) figure out a VOWIFI and 3g calling option
I've found the great thread on steps a) - d) and assume all will be straightforward and easy. All of the Google Play Store updates will be easy, I've done all of that already just to test a favorite game (a primary reason I wanted to upgrade the phone to begin with).
I understand there are two SIM slots. Does it matter which I put the SIM in from my P2XL? Am I better off going to the Verizon store and having them put a new SIM in? If I remove the SIM from the P2XL can it still perform emergency calls?
Working with Verizon seems the trickiest part. I know I want to make certain it's activated for CDMA-less (found a great thread here on this, too). Are there any other things I need to request or make sure I test before assuming I'm good to go with Verizon? I won't have any issues because the phone is rooted, will I?
Is the right time to use the OnePlus app to migrate apps and data after successful Verizon activation? I'm not opposed to installing all (there are a LOT) of my apps one by one if it's going to work better and/or has some benefit.
I understand voice won't work over 3g (when LTE's not avialable). Is that correct? And I'm thinking this is related to VOWIFI? I'm sorry if I'm conflating two issues. But a workaround, at least for the latter, has been mentioned here that uses Google Hangouts and some Google app that acts like a phone, but it requires a number? Can someone shine some more light on this for me?

Are you saying that the guides here aren't adequate? I've had great success with Android tablets in the past following what's here. Perhaps you could be a bit less vague?
