[Q] Why does my battery drain so quickly? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I have been having really terrible battery on my AT&T HTC One X. I have had it for over a month now and it has not lasted nearly as long as some other users who posted their battery stats.
I have tried several things to try to improve my battery, including turning off auto-sync and turning off the mobile network for almost all day long. I have tried stock, CleanROM 3.1 DE, and Sick Sense HOXL (in which I used the CPU editor to set it to battery saver mode). I have been able to stretch the battery life out to last about an hour extra with the CPU editor, but still nowhere near where I have seen others at.
My battery lasts about 14-15 hours maximum and about 2 hours of screen usage at most, but that is rare. Some days my battery lasts less than 10 hours and not even an hour of screen time. On these days the battery will drop 3%-5% at a time, sometimes even 10% at a time.
I really don't want to go to AT&T and exchange the phone if I don't have to, but I do have a warranty on it. I get a high percentage of screen use and am not sure if that is normal. Could it possibly be that my screen is not completely turning off?
I am posting pics and a logcat file to help determine the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

i swear this thread comes up every day

I have looked through the forum to see if there is anything related, but most seem to say their battery gets hot. I don't have that problem. Maybe it is just AT&T's LTE that drains the battery too quickly? I want to be sure there is nothing wrong with the phone though because some days it drops way too quickly. If I turn off the phone and turn it back on, I lost a tremendous amount of battery. It seems weird to me.

Its the LTE.

Chrome was murdering my battery before the update, now it still kills it. I did a full run with it install. I never opened it and it used 10% of my battery. Doesn't seem like that's your problem though. But just monitor for any rogue apps.

I've been using Bad ass Battery stats to keep track of stuff. Its been a bit helpful but like you, I get about 15 -20 hours before I have to consider plugging it in. Some weather Widgets really kick the crap out of the battery so keep that in mind.
Idk how people pull off these 24hrs+ times but I'm a bit jealous.

I have tried the APN method to switch off LTE, but the method is sort of unreliable as it drops the network too frequently. I tried it for a day, but the results were similar. Any other method or should I just test it for longer?

I used this method for a while as well, but yes, the network drops are annoying. The battery on the One X is very inconsistent. You may want to try swapping your unit to see if you can do better.
Another thing, there are issues with LTE when you drop/regain signal, it starts draining like crazy sometimes.

I'm still trying to determine if I've got a defective unit or not. My battery drains fast, but maybe I'm to blame?
From 100% charge, I'm down to 45% after 4.5 hours, 2 hours and 20 minutes of screen time.
54% screen
27% calls
7% chrome
6% maps (why the hell is this always running anyway?)
Any thoughts?

There really are tons of threads talking about this, with battery temperature comments only being a fraction of those. search for the Battery Stats XL Edition thread. Not only does it have a ton of reports on good battery life, but TONS of info on how people achieve that and what they have found ot be helpful. There are numerous other threads you can find in a search. I have only seen one scenario where my battery drains remarkably quickly, and that's an issue with my corporate exchange email and is pretty sporadic (1 time every couple weeks, maybe slightly more).
Looks like you have one image in the OP that shows an extensive amount of WiFi-on time. that can really drain. screen brightness is another thing. I stay at 20% max, less if i can handle it. The app Brightness Toggle Widget is AWESOME for me...simple and makes it easy to keep phone at 20% (my normal level) but increase as ambient lighting dictates (like being outside). here are some more basic suggestions that i use to maintain easily a full day+ of battery. (running stock sense).
-disabled crapware (most att services, city id, google stuff I dont use, etc.)
-20% brightness most of the time
-wi-fi, GPS, BT off unless needed (LTE burns anyway!)
-syncing 1 gmail, 1 exchange account
-only running a couple of live widgets
-disabled live weather in pretty much every place possible as this can fry battery
-swipe away unused apps relatively frequently
these are mega-basic ideas but i've had no consistent battery problems and get great life. also, check your full charge voltage level using *#*#4636#*#* and confirm you are starting around 4187mV and have a healthy battery. it's also remarkably possible that you just got a phone with a poor battery/battery function. another thought is that i see you pulling some pretty low cell signal (only 1 bar LTE in one of those shots, 3 in a few others). That's not great and could kill more battery that you can easily tell. I'm in LTE and rarely see as little as 3 bars of service. if you are on the fringe of good signal that can really do you in. checked log file and nothing jumps out, but i'm not the most reliable source for interpreting that data. hope this helps in some way.

I have most bloatware disabled, at least everything that I was capable of disabling. My brightness is set to auto, I can try with it lower and see how that works (still not sure why my screen percentage shows to be so high, I have seen others with the phone and it stays much much lower like 20-30% and over 3 hours of use). I have auto-sync off and no live widgets running, I only use the sense clock/weather widget, but weather doesn't update unless I manually open it since auto-sync is off. I am also constantly swiping away unused apps and the only one that is ever really open is messaging because I use it more than anything else.
I really don't want to go swap my phone out unless there really is a problem with it, which is why I posted here. I need to find out of it is something hardware related, such as a defective battery or screen, rather than software related and capable of fixing.

These "great battery life" threads always annoy me to no end. Not to take anything away from your good fortune, congrats to you, but after what seems like dedicating part of my life to trying to get even passable battery life out of this damn phone, I still can't make it through a full day, unless I refrain from using it for the most part. I'm really curious as to what the variable is from phone to phone that causes many to have poor battery life, and a few select others to get exactly the opposite. Anyway, again...congrats!

I've been trying to think of a way to normalize the battery usage measurement. Something we can all use to make sure we are comparing apples to apples. I am considering an app that would record usage stats compared to battery drain and then assign that to a value. Then one could say " I got 10 hours of batter with a usage coefficient of 23". And 23 would relate to a scale of usage. That way we could get a better idea of what battery life really is.

I'm with you. I get abysmal battery life and I am not by any definition a power user. Texts, emails, some web browsing only. No streaming at all. My email apps are set to manual only, wifi and gps off almost all the time, certainly when not in use, LTE off, brightness set to automatic.
Yet I get barely a few hours before the battery is very low. I'm talking like 7-8 hours, a majority of which is spent with the phone on standby in an off state.

Right now running humble at 1.4ghz and juice defender i am getting 2-3% battery drain per hour with medium/heavy usage. I was getting 8 hours without juice defender but now that it's working i can see this.phone getting over 18 hours. Screen is around 60% brightness.

There really isn't a reason for my phone to be syncing every hour, I'll just go into my gmail and press the refresh. I'll go into pulse and refresh so I can check my newsfeed. Wifi always on and always great signal, weaker signal means more battery drainage, vibration should be off as it really uses battery. I'll keep on thinking about new things and post them

Living out in the sticks with crummy service or in a building with crummy service can really effect battery life.
For example, where I work and where I live, I'm pretty sure I'm connected to the same cell tower, as I work and like a mile apart as the crow flies.
With that said, I work in a brick building with a metal roof, and my phone fights for signal all day, every day. It drains 15% per hour at idle. The same phone with the same usage at home sips less than 5%. At home I get great coverage.
I can promise you, that's one factor to consider. Another is setting the display to automatic brightness. I find that to be a battery killer. I don't know if its because its always sensing and calculating, or if its just not at the optimal brightness. Maybe a combo of both.
Setting it statically, even if its not the dimmest setting helps me.. I don't know why tho.
So anyway, location has a very large part of battery life.... even if you're not set to auto sync, your radios are still talking to the towers. With a bad signal, the phone will crank up the power to maintain a better signal... and that will destroy your battery... even more then auto sync.

I've tried cutting down the extras to the absolute basics and it really made no difference for me, or if it did it was too small to identify. The two things i'm definitely not willing to go without is push mail and a display that I can see. Having said that I don't really get that many emails and my display is generally set to ~20% (no auto) which is just adequate. I use Google Voice also, but when I uninstalled it for a couple days the drain remained.

Are you sure your body isn't storing large amounts of electricity and you actually recharge the phone as you're holding it in your hand? Do you live directly under high voltage transmission lines by chance? I've never overclocked, but using stock clock settings with any combo of every ROM/Kernel available, regardless of whether it's stripped or loaded, under medium to heavy use with the display set to 60% I would see a drop of anywhere from 20%-30%/hr. The only time I get 2-3% per hour is in standby with the phone untouched and no calls or Emails/Gvoice texts coming through. Personally, I think you were lucky and scored one of the rigged units they send out to reviewers. lol

I thought this too, and while I know it absolutely does make a difference in regard to the amount of power the phone transmits with, after a couple recent experiences in different places with 5 bar reception, one even having 4G, my battery drain problem seemed unchanged or very mildly improved (but still dreadful). At home I only get 3G, I lock it to CDMA so it doesn't search, but average around 2-3 bars. It's never in standby mode that I have an issue, it's in use that the battery level plummets, even when not transmitting data. If I didn't love the phone so much in every other way I would have Ebayed it and gotten something else by now, but the idea of parting with it makes me very sad. I've also considered getting the 2600 mah battery, but then I can't use a case. Dilemmas.
I don't know about you guys... but, whenever I am home.. im on wifi. I keep reading about people being at home and being in bad service areas or whatever. At this day and age doesn't everyone have a wifi router at home? The wifi radio uses signifigantly less power than the lte radio or cdma radio, even with great reception.

[Q] Real World Battery Life

Fellow MT4GS users,
How is your battery lasting you? I'm coming from a MT4G, even though I eventually modded it, and it I used to get at least a full day and have to charge that night at the worst unless I really heavily used it.
My MT4GS has been lasting me half a day or so before I get into the yellow/red and I'm usually charging before the sun goes down.
My main culprit according to the built in battery indicator is display at 65% (I'm on automatic brightness)
Just over 10 hours today for me before I had to charge.
ps- Anyone know how to remove the annoying low power notifications? I'm getting two pop ups in a row.
Yeah mine generally lasts about 14 hours at moderate usage, but it's only been 2 days, and I remember when I got the MyTouch 4G it died on me while I was still at work and then after a week or so it got much better...
Yeah, I can agree with you there I think my MT4G was a little wonky the first week or so. We'll see how it goes.

Only lasting 6 hours yesterday ....
My battery lasted about 33 hours. After the 1st full charge. So way better than my other phones have done. This wasnt heavy usage though. No videos or music just a few calls, lots of emails and some web browsing.
One problem I am having is low call volume. My videos and music are perfectly loud, just the call volume sucks.

Well make sure, your phones screen brightness is on low. Also make sure wifi, gps, bluetooth are off. Also make sure you kill some of the apps you ran on a task manager. just gotta find ways to keep the battery life up.
Well when I first got the phone, I didnt charge it until it was almost dead. Then fully charged it.
Also I turned off GPS, WiFi ect. I also use task manager to kill background programs that I don't need or want running.
We will see if the battery life goes down after a few weeks. Sometimes they take time to normalize.
Oh what task you ended and what task manger you used?

I appreciate the help but the logic is off. This is the latest ..and i stress smartttphone. It is supsupposed to be used as such. Bluetooth ..4g..music...video calling..maps..etc.. if u use of of these features six hours it will last. If you use them all try maybe 4 hours. Plus those boxes are annoying when the batterly is low. This phone has got to be rooted.

I'm gonna have to agree with that one, that's pretty much no different than saying buy a car but don't drive it so you can save gas lol
I have gotten to around 12 hours or more now. Still moderate overall but heavier browser usage.
I do not kill tasks or turn off wifi, gps or anything. My brightness is auto.
I uninstalled the recent maps update because I saw where G2 users seem to think the recent update is draining their battery so I wondered if it could maybe be causing issues here too.
Anyways my battery life has gotten into the acceptable range and that was all I really did other than have more days to monitor it.

This appears to be the same battery that is in the Sensation 4G according to Google.
For us this is good because Ebay and Amazon are already flooded with replacement batteries.
We need to find a higher capacity mAh battery but with the same size as to not make us have to get a replacement back. This shouldn't be that hard.
My old phone has a smaller battery with a higher mAh capacity so the battery in the myTouch 4G Slide is an utter disappointment. They could have easily produced a 3000 mAh battery for this beast of a phone.
Edit: Found a 1900 mAh battery for only 9.99.

Well make sure, your phones screen brightness is on low. Also make sure wifi, gps, bluetooth are off. Also make sure you kill some of the apps you ran on a task manager. just gotta find ways to keep the battery life up.

Screen is on the least bright setting. I'm an ex blackberry user and dont even have one app. I could care less about apps. I'm charging every 5 hours and thats sometimes from just it sitting around/ not even using the phone. The thing better get it's act together. I'm starting to like the keyboard too but I'm up at 5am and if im charging at noon that's terrible. Especially with minimal use.

I've found the slide version there too for $11.99. I've wonder how long it will last with that battery.

There must be something wrong. Mine lasts about that long playing videos and games, messing with the camera, web browsing etc..

As I posted in my other thread, battery sucks on this phone. I had to keep wifi off all the day to keep it from dying by 6pm. Funny how 4g speed is so bad in nyc that wifi is the only other option to do something meaningful.

Weird I live in small city and 4G is crazy fast. When I get to a big city like Baltimore, Maryland the 4G was slow. My thoughts are there too many people on the 4G network. T-Mobile did promised us double the 4G speed and they need more Towers too.
~
For the first couple days, my battery life was awful. I'd be getting low-bat notifications when I got home from an 8-hour day at work.
But of course that's always the case with new phones that haven't even had the settings tweaked...
- Placed a Wifi toggle widget on the homepage and turn it off every day after leaving home for work in the morning.
- Ensured certain programs and updates were not running in the background automatically:
~ Turned off Autosync on accounts (manual only)
~ Turned off autoupdates for weather
~ No Bluetooth, GPS, Wifi, unless turned on for a specific reason
~ Enabled power efficiency and power saver modes (30%)
~ Disabled Always-on data connection
~ Disabled auto-updates in various apps (Friendcaster, IM+ Pro, etc.)
- Turned the screen off when not in use
Today I'm at 40% after 14 hours of mixed use. I'd say that's DAMN good.
By the way, for those seeing the whole "Autosync off" thing and thinking that you can't do it, just do it. I don't get my work email or personal email on my phone unless I tell it to and it's utterly awesome. Less stress. Less looking at my phone constantly. It feels free and just plain great. And I used to be superconnected 24/7 syncing every 5 minutes (if push wasn't available).

[Q] Is this normal battery life?

33% after 5 hours, but taking into account:
1. Phone set to GSM Auto (PRL), BT off
2. Screen brightness set to max, note how long the screen was on during the 5 hours from the screenshot
3. Three hours spent going in and out of signal/bad coverage areas
4. Music on headphones + DSP Manager enabled about three hours
5. Watched 1 hour of video (max brightness)
6. Heavy internet use and messaging for approx 4 hours
7. 15 minutes of phone calls
so 33%... does that seem normal after the above?
Looks quite typical to me. Music on for several hours? You're taxing the processor a bit there. You'll want to recharge the phone nightly (as all of us do...)

I end up having to charge it halfway through the day then again at night, as I use it quite a bit. But I was having concerns about battery life as my power usage readings were always higher than everyone elses when idle.
I use my phone as my music player while I commute, although that doesn't seem to be very taxing, I let the music play overnight with the battery at 100%, ten hours later it was still at 65%. But I was not sure about during use, I always felt the percentage went down too quickly.
I'm a Nexus S user, so I can't comment on what battery life is considered "normal" for Desire S.
What I do know is that:
With your usage, that would be normal for Nexus S. In fact, better than my setup (which is stock 2.3.4 ROM). Three hours of music + 1 hour of video and your phone's still alive?
Amazing.
What ROM are you on?
Now I want me a Desire S!!
Edit: I missed the fact that during the 3-hour music, the screen is mostly off. Well, no longer *that* amazing (sorry ), but still considerably better than my Nexus S!
The point to note is the angle of the graph when the screen is on compared to that when the screen is off
Without stating the obvious screen usage kills the battery, so I'd suggest keeping the screen bright ness to a minimum and I'd recommend against using the auto setting as it defaults way to high, you'll only need high brightness in direct sunlight
I get similar numbers, I'd consider your usage as heavy and undercut consider taking a spare charger with you so that you can top up during day after periods of heavy usage
Instal an application like battery monitor widget to log your battery usage while the device is sleeping (screen off and not playing music) to determine if you are suffering from a battery drain

My battery lasts for 16+ hrs..
usage includes 1 hr of music,
1 hr of video, 1 hr gaming,
2-3hr wifi ON
Net always ON on EDGE (not 3G) for sync except the night where 6 hrs GPRS is off,

Good tips. I just tried turning the brightness down (it was at max) and I barely noticed the difference until it got below 50%! This may significantly increase battery life, we'll see.
Thank you all for your responses

I've already tried using battery monitors - and I was constantly getting higher readings than other users (i.e. Battery Monitor Widget would never go below 14mA on sleep, when other users were getting 6-9 mA) so I was thinking maybe the readings are false. Hence the reason for this thread - rather than using mA readings, I thought I'd post this and compare the actual battery life with other users.

The screen wasn't off for the whole time while listening to music, I was using Whatsapp for most of the time along side. I'm on the 1.1 beta Superkid CM7 ROM.
Whoa! That's not normal battery life. Please see my guide thread, and especially see the last post I made this morning.
Ben is right though, screen brightness at 100% won't be helping your cause. I leave mine at 45% when indoors.

Thanks, your guide was very handy. I've considered all the things there, but as I have been crying about for the last couple of weeks, no matter what ROM I use, my power consumption (according to Battery Monitor Widget) never went below 14mA. In CM7 (the ROM I use), the one item always eating most battery (whether phone is idle or heavily used), is "Mobile Standby". In other ROMs, "Mobile Standby" is much further down the list as it should be, but my usage is still never lower than 14mA.
I figured perhaps there was something wrong in the readings, or in the information displayed, so decided to just do a subjective test by using the device very heavily just to see what the battery drain would be like.
So my case above, was a 5 hour period of heavy internet browsing, internet messaging (Whatsapp), 3 hour music playback (continuous, while messaging/browsing), 1 hour video playback, with a combination of 2G, 3G, no signal, and bad coverage areas, a bit of GPS usage, and the screen was on for a large portion of the time, on 100% brightness.
As you said in your guide - when you do a second charge in the middle of the day, the battery life for that charge is lower than an overnight charge. Although I haven't really taken notice of this, the above took place in the afternoon, after being charged from around 50% to 100%. I kept it plugged into a USB charger until around 3pm, then conducted the above drainage test.
When you say this is not normal battery life, what do you mean? Should I have still had a lot more remaining charge after all that heavy drainage + screen on (at max brightness) for most of the time?

I suppose if you have bad signal coverage AND heavy use AND screen at 100% brightness then maybe over 5 hours its to be expected. I must admit I've never tried recreating this. What do you get with more normal use typically? Or is this normal for you? I have found those current monitor apps/widgets to be so inconsistent I've stopped using them. Instead, I've started looking at apps that monitor CPU and Wake Lock times. I've found it much more helpful in tracking down battery drain.

Due to my long daily commute, this is almost my normal use (although not this excessive).
What app would you recommend to monitor CPU and Wake Lock times?
Thanks.

Having a look at the app, I don't see how it helps determining causes of battery drain? Could anyone shed a bit more light?
For example these are my top entry in "Wakelocks" and "Since charged":
android.media.MediaPlayer
com.tbig.playerpro.PlayerPro
3 h 51 m 1 s (13861 s) Count:180 44.1%
GTALK_CONN
Google Services
3 m 34 s (214 s) Count:1669 0.7
What do all those figures actually mean?
That's quite normal for a heavy usage with max brightness. But i also noticed that between 100% and 50% brightness there's not much difference. So i just set it around 50% outdoor and 30% indoor.
I think those figures mean that the music player is keeping your device awake for those 3 hours you played the music. Which probably explains the earlier part of your graph where it's awake but screen is not on. I think.

How often do you allow your phone to check for emails? Maybe this is the cause of 14mA. Do you use a 3rd party email app?

Large variance in reported battery life due to overheating?

Like many others, I've scratched my head regarding why some seem to be able to get 7+ hours of screen on life while others get only around 3. I know the typical response is wakelocks but those SHOULDN'T affect screen on time much, when the CPU is already awake.
I have noticed that it seems that my device dies much faster when it gets hot, which makes sense, but I've never seen it affect a device to this extent. One time, I fully charged my battery and only got 3 hours SOT merely doing nonstop web browsing on WIFI without putting the device to sleep at all. Yesterday I even froze all apps except the stock ones after flashing PA gapps on Omnirom and my batter was worse than when I had 100+ apps and greenify. Usually I get 3-4 hours SOT a day of normal use on LTE with intermittent, cooler usage. When the device gets hot it also doesn't want to charge nearly as quickly either.
Therefore, I have a simple request: post your best or typical SOT and how often your device gets noticeably hot. I'd like to see if there's a trend between heat and SOT. Or at least vote in the poll. Both would be preferred.

lol, are you serious?
we see a large variance is battery life because we all use our devices completely differently. plus we all have different qualities of phone/data signals, we all use differing brightness for our screems(some auto some not), we all do differing things to set up our phones as we want.. do you want me to go on? and the temperatures, they vary throught the day, depending what you are doing, depending on the temperatures around you. sometimes they can get very hot, sometimes they stay cool with lighter use. i get 5.5-7h screen on time every day. my phone can see temperatures of 88C to 0C daily.

And disabling all apps to take the user setup out of the equation doesn't change things? Or the fact that I only got 3 hours SOT just web browsing? Sure, there's definitely variance involved but it seems like there's more with this device than I've ever seen before. Most devices I've used have been mostly consistent among users and don't have some people complaining about 2 hours versus 7 hours SOT in a short period.
It's easy to say it's environment variables or user error when you're getting 5+ hours every day but when you're someone who's been around the block with Android and phones in general and can't break the 4 hour mark ever, you start to wonder if there's more than initially meets the eye. I don't mean this to attack you, I'm just not sure what else yo do. I've tried undervolting, underclocking, keeping brightness down, greebifying (BBS looks fine), modified location settings, stayed on WiFi, turned off WiFi, removed apps, etc, and nothing helps SOT, only sleep drain.
The bottom line is, have you noticed your battery drains faster when it's hot or is it pretty constant? I'm just wondering if some devices, due to a lower PVS value or some other property of their chip, run hotter and drain more current doing the same tasks. Trying to eliminate the possibility.
P.S. Have you noticed the XDA app modifies or quotes the post above what you press? I have, as you can tell...

ive had g1, google ion, nexus one, nexus s, galaxy nexus, nexus 7, nexus 4, and the nexus 5 now. every one of them has/had great battery life. its the way i setup and use my devices. our use is a huge variable. every single person uses their device completely different. for example in setup and use, you use the crappy xda app, that uses a huge amount of battery, i use the browser, and never install those kinds of apps. many people have facebook installed, i uninstslled it more than 2.5 years ago, i use the browser for facebook. facebook is also a battery killer. i can go on and on. then theres the variances in phone and data signal. bad signals can get more battery drainage, terrible signals can be battery killers.
anyways, you said sleep drains. i bet you have a few badly behaving apps, or you are using the wrong kernel for your device. or, it could just be the way that you use your phone is the reason you don't see 4+ hours sot.

Fair enough. I know the XDA app is bad but didn't think it was so poorly coded that it's a battery hog. The site needs a mobile version IMO.
What do you mean by "you said sleep drains"? My device sleeps quite nicely, I just mentioned that because that's usually the battery life people complain about but that's not an issue here.
I'll try doing a full wipe and not just freeze all my apps and leave just the stock stuff for a couple of days and see if that makes a difference.
Yeah, I wish there was a way to quantify how much signal is killing your battery. Sure, there's the battery page in settings but more detail would be wonderful.
I've experimented with most every kernel but it never really made a difference. I mostly stick to Franco.
Either way, I'd still like to get some crowd data on what they see. Two devices with opposite results is hardly conclusive (even though all your devices have been good, that doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility that there's a bad batch of CPU's or batteries in some Nexus 5's, unlikely as that is.). Everything you've said is valid, but I want to entertain the notion that, while that may be the problem the vast majority of the time, there could be another cause. If I find a bad behaving app on my phone or I just have crappy signal, great, but more data is never a bad thing.

That looks like it rules out CPU temperature then, if temperature caused heavy drain you should see a steep slope at that time. Did your battery ever get hot?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
This is the first high-end smartphone I've owned that doesn't get hot at all. It'll get a little warm from time to time, but it's never anywhere near what I'd call "hot."
Samsung phones, on the other hand, get freaking HOT. My GS2 would get so hot at times that I could barely touch it, and my GS4 wasn't a whole lot better. My wife's GS3 will be blazing hot in its case when she's just been browsing the web or on Facebook. My N5 is never even close to as hot as Samsung phones have been in my experience.
Hmm, I dunno if I'd say it is painfully hot (thought when trying to wireless charge and use it it gets pretty bad) but certainly quite noticeable. What was the temp in degrees Celsius? I see 70s on the phone and 40s on the battery quite frequently.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Phones that get hot to the touch are actually doing a good job dissipating the heat. Though it may become uncomfortable to be absorbing some of that heat it does have to go somewhere.
Nexus 5 uses aggressive thermal throttling to keep the phone fairly cool and according to Anand has a heat spreader between the SoC and battery unlike the Nexus 4 which caused the two to heat up quicker.
The only thing that will stop me from getting over 4hrs SoT (3.5 - 5 based off usage) is if an application decides to keep the phone awake endlessly. I've seen it happen for Google Search and a few others randomly at times. Reboot or force stop fixes that up.
My nexus 5 battery also seems really crap, and the back gets hot very quickly. Everything else on this device is 100% perfect. Ive tried everything i possibly could (Different kernel, undervolting, lower cpu freq, change governors, low brightness, most connectivity settings off, ok google off, and many more battery saving aspects) yet i still can only get around 2-3 Hours sot with light usage (XDA, web browsing, social media). Is my device somewhat faulty? Or is it supposed to be like this? And normally when i play games, it drains at a speed of a percent per 40-60 seconds.
And please dont go about bashing me, im just a bit curious on how people get around 6 hours sot.

I haven't really had to do this on this phone, but I used to chase Screen on battery drain issues with Cool Tool from the play store. It floats a highly configurable window on the screen that lets you monitor a lot of system parameters including current draw - which is probably what you are most interested in here. I think you can also monitor the temp of the device, the cpu utilization, etc., etc. This lets you play with different settings and what not and get more immediate feedback as to what is happening with your device. In the screenshot, I configured the floating window only to show current draw...should be the pink 182 mA.

Thanks for that link but am I right in assuming most of it's functionality won't work correctly in KitKat? That has been reported with most battery or CPU monitoring apps so far.
I've been looking for something to show me current draw on stock but have only had battery widgets show me the current battery voltage which I don't understand the significance of. Starts at 4300mV when 100% and drops to about 3900mV when nearing empty.

Battery life getting worse, common problem?

Yesterday a post was made to /r/nexus5 on reddit about how battery life was getting worse as time went on. Over 100 people replied saying that their phone was getting worse battery life as well. Here's the link: http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1yxj2g/battery_life_went_from_insane_to_terrible/ The most people were able to find out was that there was a problem with the Android OS process. Are you guys having similar issues? And do you have any fixes?
Batteries do lose their max charge over time. We're now 6 months aged for the first purchased devices, so it could simply be those batteries are starting to age. They still have years to go, but a brand new battery will always be impressive.
It's one reason why I silently laugh at people bragging about great battery life for a brand new device. of course it will get good life, it's a new battery running optimized software that isn't pushing the hardware as hard as the software 2 years into a device life cycle.
posted by people that know nothing..
as time goes on, you install more and more apps. many apps arent coded very well, and have other issues. anyways, people get more and more of these crappy apps that will drain more and more battery without you even using them. anywho, not a problem here. i get pretty much the exact same battery life now as i did months ago.

great battery life for an "old" device, 5-6 hours screen on time every single day. the batteries life doesnt reduce that quick, and generally youll change phones(within 2 years) before you see the life of your battery shorten.

6 months isn't going to be noticeably less max charge unless the battery was severely abused. Also the phone has been out for 4 months and most are younger.
Here's something to think about: Usage patterns change. People install new apps.

Indeed usage patterns play a massive part. And some of which can be completely out of your control.
At home on WiFi I'll get 6-7 hours of screen time.
At home on hspa I'll get 5-6
At work on hspa I'll get 3-4
So at worst case scenario I can lose half of my normal battery usage just based on the carrier performance.

I get about 3-4 hours SoT daily... If anything, that has gone up since I got my device (one of the first batches shipped in US).
I wish I could get 5-7 SoT, with numbers like that, I'm beginning to think I'm doing something very very wrong
Point is... I have one of the first phones shipped out, and my battery life has stayed exactly the same.
High battery usage by Android OS is probably good indication that there are some wakelocks. It has nothing to do with battery being "older".
My battery is great from day one.
Captain obvious mode now:
Posting SoT is pointless and proves nothing. It really depends on what you are doing when screen is on. It is really obvious that it is not the same if you read some book with 5% brightness or play a game.
My SoTs go from 2h up to 7h, depending on usage...

wake lock is main reason makes battery drains so much. try to use greenify to hibernate apps.

LOL. Yep. Give me a day and I'll show you screenies of ten hours of SOT. It'll be BS because to get those results I have to set my phones brightness to less than stock. I also have to set screen timeout to 30 minutes. As well I need to remember to turn the damn screen back on after 30 minutes. I also have to make sure my phone is in my sock drawer doing nothing when the screen is on. It'll still show 10 hours SOT though.

Only 10? Think you could do much higher in those conditions.

Yeah, the common problem.... My battery just is used for 5 hours.
But there are some fixs to follow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168036
I posted my usual screen times on a typical day for me.
Typically I do the same things which are a lot of xda and viewing the verge and YouTube. A few calls and texts.
And from my experience the difference between being at home with WiFi off and being at work with WiFi off is that my battery usually lasts nearly twice as long at home.
I was trying to get across the message that your carriers signal strength plays a massive role on how long your battery lasts.
So say if a mast went down and you get bumped onto one a bit further away (they don't rush when fixing these things unless it's a critical one). You would have done nothing and all of a sudden your battery life has started taking a massive hit.

I'm also having this problem with the android os draining my batter And this started happening within the last week or so.I used to be able to easily get about 30 hours out of my phone, now I'm only able to get about half that. As you can see in the 4th pic, android os has been the cause of a 3h45m partial wakelock, which doesnt seem right to me and is probably the cause of most of the battery drain. the last 2 pics are something that also seems weird to me, as google accounts manager shouldnt take 4% in about an hour. I dont even know why its running that long. Though i know how to quick fix the account manager drain (simply disable it) the android os isnt that simple as i dont know how to see exactly what apps or processes are making it cause a partial wakelock.
Im on omnirom using chaos kernel 9.2

I had a similar issue a while back, and in the end it was Google location reporting within Google now service. Try to switch location reporting off but leave location history on and see if it helps. Also choose Location mode to battery saving.
Turning off location reporting does not affect Google Now functionality...
It can be something else in your case, but this problem was common...

One thing I've noticed as a weirdness is the cache of a phone can get stale and so it gets into some weird loop that drains battery or something and clearing the cache improves battery life. Also sometimes apps can develop bugs or new wakelocks when you do an update so sometimes you have to stay on top of it to track it.

Thanks for the cache thing I have never thought about that before :good:

If I did not use some preventative measures to prolong battery life I would maybe get 14-16 hours in a day of usage, I always left wifi on, bluetooth even when not connected, data, force LTE, etc. I did not care because I charge my phone every night. I just find it silly if I get a day usage out of my phone and it is at 50% well assuming you use the phone the exact same as the last day you will use another 50% and it will be dead by the time you get to your charger.
