Surely noob question but i don't have the answer...
2 days ago, i installed Fallout ans i flash boot.img : the result was ok.
yesterday, i wanted to try blindice 11 so i installed it but no wifi : i flashed the boot-img file of blindice and this time, the wifi worked.
I returned to Fallout yesterday evening because it's my prefered at the moment and i flashed again boot-img file of fallout.
So, my question is : do we have to flash the boot.img file of each rom we want to install ?
Thank's a lot.
I guess that you unlocked your phone with HTCDEV? In that case - yes. Every time.

You don't have to do it every time. Only when the kernel changes. Especially in this case both the roms are using different kernels. BlindIce uses a CM9 kernel which is a modified 2.6 Kernel to work with ICS. Fallout is using the stock HTC 3 Kernel.
So, if you switch between different CM9 versions you may keep the kernel (sometimes yes, sometimes no - read the threads), the same works for different Sense4a ports since they use the same kernel.
Bottom line:
Always if the kernel changes you have to flash the boot.img

This. Most ROM zip files will install it for you. If S-OFFed, it installs automatically. If HTC-DEVed unlocked only, flash manually everytime. This is good mentality when installing roms.

Hey guys, urgent help needed.
I've installed the fallout rom and then my phone got stuck at the loading screen. I did some research and I Think I need to flash boot.img. There was a boot.img in the fallout zip folder, so on my pc i copy pasted it into the folder with fastboot/adb and all those things in it and ran the command prompt. I connected the phone to the pc and tried running the fastboot boot boot.img in command prompt in that folder, but it gets stuck at 'waiting for device'. I don't know how to fix this. I can't go to any settings and enable/disable usb debugging because for that I Will need to go into the operating system however it is stuck at loading screen so I Can't do that.
What do I do? My phone isn't working. Help!
Your phone has to be in the bootloader to run fastboot commands.

Hi,
ok i read this before. But if i want to try a different kernel i want to know is it possible to put it in an zip-archive and flash it over recorery mode.
for safety i have to backup the current kernel. backup the kernel is only possible over fastboot, right?

So you're telling if i'm just HTC-Dev unlocked and not S-OFF, i need to get boot.img from the rom zip file and the wireless driver and flash it separately via Fastboot?
In that case, where do i get the boot.img file and most importantly the wireless driver?
Thanks in Advance!
Who said you need to flash a wireless driver? Wireless works out of the box.
You can find the boot.img in the root of your rom archive.
Was that meant to be Windows driver? If you are using fastboot, then your PC will need the right drivers to connect to your device.

What ROM were you on,and what firmware?
i had been trying to flash ota ics and since that, the phone is stuck at the htc bootscreen so i wanted to restore the backup or flash a official rom or custom rom but im not able to do this because the phone isnt recognized by adb in the bootloader menu and before all this it had the android version gb 2.3.4. which specific firmware do you mean? hboot version is 1.18.0000...

Happen to come across this thread and wanted to leave this for future reference. I edited it to suit the Sensation more. I also posted this in the Juopunutbear S-OFF in the Sensation Android Development.
ROM Flashing
1. Obtain a ROM of your choice, and note the location on your computer.
2. reboot your device into fastboot mode via one the following .
1. power off the device then back on with 'vol down ' + power button.
3. Wipe your device.
1. fastboot -w
4 . Update your ROM.
1. fastboot update </path/to/your/RomFile.zip>
5. Your phone will update and automatically reboot into the new ROM.

You can extract all the firmware and software images from an RUU and build them into a PG58IMG.zip... Short answer, yes. However, certain items will not flash if you're not S-off.

Will the fastboot commands.... Given by you in this thread.. Flashes the rom?
Then thnx a lot. It'll help a lot for other people... And I believe the person should at least have an unlocked bootloader by htcdev to get this work.

Yes you have to be HTC Dev unlocked or S-off to do this. But remember HTC Dev only unlocks the system, recovery, and boot partitions.

one more question
to flash rom via fastboot then the rom should be containing img's for each partition
unlike how all the custom roms here are coming (no img's for every thing...like example there is no system.img for most of custom kernels)

Hi,
I unlocked my desire with HTCDev so i have to flash the boot.img file every time i install a rom with a different kernel.
I was wondering if there another way, without connecting the phone to the pc, to flash this file.
I'm afraid not but i would like to be sure !
Nope, afaik not
There is a test feature on Sensation in 4EXT recovery, that allows doing it, activating bootloader upon reboot in some way.
I'm not sure if 4EXT recovery for Desire S has the same feature. Worth checking.
In any case, that's your only hope. The other way would be to relock, downgrade and S-OFF, to avoid all this unnecessary mess of flashing boot.img.
That feature doesn't work on desire s .
So the only way is via a pc using fastboot

Hi, Noob here!!!
I've been trying to install a custom ROM onto my HTC desire s , 2.00.0002, 3 branded device for 2 days now.
Super one click sticks at stage 7, tried all the deselect and reselect debugging fixes.
Done the HTCdev unlock, thinking this would help.
Tried to downgrade to use revolution, done all the zergRush and misc_version commands but nothing happens when trying to change version, still had $ in command line instead of #
I've installed Clockworkmod and can boot into recovery, have backed up, deleted and formatted and recovered succesfully.
My main question is.....Can I flash CyanogenMod without rooting?
if so, what other roms can I flash via clockworkmod?
If I have to root...how do I manage it? because I've been right round 3 circles of the net and these pages trying to find an answer!!!
Hope someone can help.
The guides here are really detailed. If you can't follow them - I suggest you leave the phone as is until you can, since you're likely to cause way more damage going down the road. And in the meantime, read the guides until you figure out what things do.

Since you have already been able to install CWM recovery, means that your device is already rooted? Check whether you have SuperUser installed, download the free version of Titanium backup and run the app once, it will tell you whether or not you are rooted. If it is, then I suggest you to follow the link below to downgrade and S-OFF your device (since you already unlocked it using HTCDev anyway).. Or you can stay S-On but i'm afraid you need to use your PC to flash the boot.img everytime you flash a ROM..
If it's not rooted, then try to root it with the same link below.. HTCDev unlock is different with root..
But locked down to 3 network is another thing, I'm afraid you need to pay to get it carrier-unlocked..

no just flash zip file .
Nothing hard here. I've flashed 4-5 roms up to now. All running without a hiccup. Here's how you do-
Extract boot.img from the rom you are flashing
Put adb.exe, fastboot.exe, adb.dll and boot.img in a folder
Flash everything normally through recovery
And when it's done DON"T REBOOT just power off
Open up cmd, run as admin and go to your folder( cd c:\folder_name
type adb reboot bootloader
And finally fastboot flash boot boot.img
Everything should be okay.
Hi there.
2 things before i explain the problem: 1) Yes, I'm a noob and 2) sorru for bad english.

After trying to install the custom rom (fallout 5.0) etered the recovery and do a full wipe and a format. After that I copied on the sd card the ROM .zip and flashed from recovery. Always seem to be good, but when the phone rebooted, it was stucked on the white htc one screen.
I've tryied lot of guides and tool s here, but nothing helps me (5 hours on the forum).
A very big help will be very appreciated.
Thanks guys!

I think that I cannot flash any custom rom because (I think) I have to downgrade the 2.02 hboot.
By the way here the list of things I did with
RUU ICS, UNLOCKED, SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL, HBOOT-2.02.0002:
- recovery (cyanogenmod) > full wipe, etc
- install from zip file > fallout 5.0
- flash boot.img
After that everything seems good but when the phone reboot, it will stuck into htc one white screen (or black whit an other rom).
Thanks for help
EDIT: the only thing I want is to flash and test every roms I want, without having always some king of problem.
What command did you use to flash boot.img. Try to be precise rather than just say i flashed the boot.Img.

Yep, maybe this is the reason of my fail. I think I lost one "flash"
I'll try later and let you know if everything is ok
So, I'm trying to flash the rom. I've wipe everything, than flashed the rom. Now I entered the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img". The prompt still show "waiting for device". What the hell?
"fastboot devices" didn't give me an answer same as "adb devices"
Uhm... Maybe I need to reinstall htc sync drivers?
Ok, nevermind, I needed to reinstall correct win7 64bit drivers.
So. I success with fastboot flash boot boot.img. The phone is still stuck on the HTC one white screen. FUUUUU!
EDIT: SUCCESS!
Just need to wait 5 mins!

Unfortunately, this "kernel updater" is making changes which are

Well, now I'm totally confused so let's start from the beginning:
1. I had some customised rom and decided to flash ViperS 3.1.1.
Flashing 3.1.1. is impossible unless you use this "kernel flasher" which
is included in downloads on the official ViperS311 thread. After
running this kernel flasher I managed to install ViperS311 but for
example LBE Privacy isn't working, my SatNav program isn't wokring,
other software isn't working as well.
2. Yesterday I got a message on my phone that there is an update from
ViperS 3.1.1 to ViperS 3.1.2 which I installed. Unfortunately, after
updating to 3.1.2 the wifi isn't working. I want to remove ViperS and
revert to other Rom like Asianic or any other. Now this is impossible
because of the changes that kernel flasher from ViperS made to my
device.
3. I want it out and get my phone back as I need it.
4. I have just flashed stock kernel and managed to install Asianic, but
after booting into the system and installing ES File Manager, it went
into a boot loop. Is starts and reboots non-stop.
5. I did used ADB but really long time ago so I don't remember all. I
also use mainly linux so I will prefer to revert it to the previous
version without the need for Windows use.

can you boot now in the asianic rom?
if not then follow these steps
1)boot the device to the bootloader
2)connect it to pc via usb(in the hboot screen must say fastboot usb)
3)now extract the boot.img from the asianic rom and place it in the folder where you have adb and fastboot files
4)open in that folder a cmd window and do fastboot flash boot boot.img
5)then do fastboot reboot
see then if it boots to the rom
Is superwipe recommended while coming from stock ICS or I should format all partition except SD Card? I am S-Off and 3.33 firmware.

Thanks for that rzr86, I'm starting to understand that now. It seems
that Kernel Flasher from ViperS 311 is a boot.img file with simple
program made by ViperS group that does what you mentioned, but without
the need for using adb and command line.
- However, I still don't understand what changes they made to that
boot.img to cause such complications... ?
Asianic installed correctly but than started crashing and booting in
loop so I replaced it with "Sense-o-Maniac" and this seems to be
working fine.
It doesn’t have any previous problems that I was experiencing on other
rom's.
I will report if any problems arise. So for so good.

All kernel flasher does is "fastboot flash boot boot.img" NOTHING ELSE, and u can use it to actually flash any other kernel you want on ANY device!
Using kernel fasher
Hi ! I just joined this forum and might be this is my first question
I am quite interesting to install this ROM (viper) and would like to take a shot. But, I worry about this "kernel flasher" issue.
Here is my sensation status :
-HBOOT 1.29
-Firmware 3.33.707.151
-Radio 1176A.3504.OOU_1124A.3504.31_M
-S-ON
-Bootloader unlocked
-Rooted
I would to confirm some questions :
1. If I want to install this ROM can't I just simply install it to the latest version of ViperS 3.1.2?
2. Which one will come first flashing kernel (using kernel flasher) or installing ROM?
3. Will it be working using my current firmware?
Sorry for this noob question. Really appreciate your help, guys.

1)simply install viperS ROM 3.1.2.use 4ext recovery and before flashing enable smartflash from 4ext
2)just flash the rom and do as i said in first answer.if you have bootloops after installation then use the kernel flasher or
do it manually by extracting the boot.img of the rom, place it your adb and fastboot folder and type the command to cmd window
fastboot flash boot boot.img
note: connect the device to pc into fastboot mode(in the hboot screen should say fastboot usb)
3)yeap

Hello,
I am trying to flash CleanRom 7.0 or any JB rom on my HTC One X (AT&T) but always gets stuck in bootloop (phone does not go past boot screen after flashing). This is what i have done.
The phone is on AT&T 1.82 stock room (rooted, SuperCID, S-Off). The phone was on some older HBoot version so I upgraded it to 2.15. Radio is 0.17.32.09.12. And I have TWRP recovery.
So I made a nadroid backup in recovery and than tried to install AT&T 3.82 rooted (downloaded from XDA, may be without radio and all). After successful flashing when I tried to reboot the system it got stuck on AT&T boot screen. So I rebooted in recovery and wiped everything. After that I tried to install CleanROM 7.0 R2 and same thing happened and even I tried latest elemental kernel but same thing is keep happening.
Can you please help me with this?
Thanks
At&t 3.82 rooted ROM? Where did you download that? It doesn't look familiar. What are your bootloader details? Which version of TWRP? How did you upgrade your hboot?

Hey,
Thanks for reply. Sorry I think I mis-wrote it. It's AT&T 3.18 ROM from following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181891
I will check and let you know TWRP version when I get back home. I am not sure about the bootloader details either, what you need to know about the boot loader to help me?
I upgraded hboot by upgrading firmware to 2.15 by using instructions at one of the threads at xda (using adb and fastboot commands and pushing a 2.15 zip to device when it is in bootloader).
Note that I was never able to install any custom ROM on HTC One X. I rooted it before a year or so tried to install CleanROM 5.1 (I guess) but it din't work. I also tried few other ROMs but nothing worked and I gave up. Recently I read that I may need to update Hboot to flash the ROMs. So I did it (had a hard time installing drivers on windows 8 and ultimately have to try winXP!). Still after all this it is not working.
Let me know if you can suggest something based on this.
Thanks

Ok so you need to give us more info
Are you s-off
What version of twrp do you have
These things matter when you flash a rom. If you are s-on you need to flash boot.img after flashing. Just do
Fastboot flash boot.img

Yes I am S-Off. I will let you know the version of TWRP when I get back home since I don't have phone with me right now. By the way I used goomanager to update TWRP, if that helps.
Thanks,

One more thing, I am using TWRP to flash the ROM. Is it a correct way? or I need to flash it using fastboot commands (like you suggested for boot.img)?
I am not much fammilier with TWRP and HTC One X so.
Thanks
K so if you are s-off then you can just flash it. If you wernt then you would need to flash boot.img. now you can try to flash the boot.img. it might not fix it but start small and work up.

TWRP is the correct way to install ROMs, but I have a feeling that your current version of TWRP is your problem. Some (2.4.x, 2.5.x) are buggy and have major problems. If your TWRP version is either of those that I've just mentioned you can update it to a known bug-free version like this:
Download the modified version of TWRP*2.6 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader

That's the reason I asked what twrp version he had
