[ REQ ] What are the steps to be followed for getting OTA? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have been flashing a lot of roms after getting ics. But there was never a situation where I needed to go back to stock to get OTA again. Here is a few questions,
1. If I flash a stock rom now, will I get the OTA? Where do I get completely stock rom?
2. Will I lose root and if I do, do I have to go through the same procedure again to root?
3. I've been hearing about flashing root patch, is it a zip file which can be installed from recovery when I'm on stock?
It would be nice if someone explain how to go from any rom to stock jelly bean with root.

Of you do not know use rom manager to return to stock. If you like a check flash 2.3.3. You will receive the OTA for 4.0.4 immediately...

This is easy, but you'll lose root. (you do know that rooting the Nexus S takes only 1 minute, that isn't a big deal. About getting back to stock, browse the Nexus S general section looking for a post that says something like that "all OTAs for all models". There you'll find an 4.0.3 official, signed, zip file. Just flash the correct file for your nexus S model, the signed zip contains recovery, bootloader, kernel, etc. After that, root the phone again (nexusshacks.com has an easy ICS root video) install CWM and flash CWM recovery. When you connect the phone to the Internet you'll should be prompted to update it to 4.0.4 via OTA. If you're not, wait a few moments or reboot the device. You're done, just wait for official jelly bean!!
Hope I've helped.

So, this way I wont lose my apps right? Even if I flash the OTA of jellybean as a .zip file and if i root it again, I can get the apps back with titanium backup i guess.

I think it's not correct,if you flash Cwm,the ota package will not be able to self-install cause it works only with stock recovery.
To recieve otas you need to have all stock, especially recovery.

I flashed 4.0.3 official, signed. after that I flashed CWM recovery via adb, went to recovery, flashed superuser.zip, turned the phone on, restored my apps/titanium backup data/etc, rebooted, in about 2 minutes after the reboot I got and warning telling me about an OTA update to 4.0.4, I hit yes and the phone turned off and installed official 4.0.4.
That proved, at least to me, that its possible to get OTAs even with custom recoverys, even though the OTAs may erase the custom recovery (that didn't happened with me, because 4.0.4 is an incremental update, it doesn't have a recovery file inside it.
I'm with stock 4.0.4 and CWM recovery right now, I hope to get jelly bean official as soon as it is released.

If you updated your nexus s to ICS from Gingerbread, you'll remember that you didn't lose any app nor data, so if you're on stock and flash jelly bean official OTA you wont lose anything too.

You guys realize that as soon as the OTA comes out, someone is going to take it, remove the recovery replacing scripts, deodex it and all the nifty stuff for us to flash a nearly stock ROM in a matter of hours, right? There's hardly any point going back to stock only to get the OTA straight away.
Chances are most people won't get the OTA as soon as it's available, either because of the slow download or because it will be rolled out in steps to serve it properly... *slaps forehead*

Well, as far as I remember it was just like that, it installed with the same background as when I first got 4.0.4 and was still unrooted. The background was the stock one, the same as when you're doing a NANbackup in CWM (an green android with the belly open).
After all this talk about recovery and OTAs I thought that maybe I was crazy, that I was saying something impossible (get 4.0.4 with CWM recovery installed), but if I remember correctly, as soon as I flashed the 4.0.3 official zip, that contains the original recovery, I plugged the phone and hit fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.0.2-crespo.img, and only after that got the OTA.
But I may be mistaken , maybe I only pushed CWM recovery after getting the 4.0.4. I don't know, but I'd bet my money on "with CWM recovery you'll get OTAs".
When the OTA come out I'll know the answer for all this questions, it will all depend on if I get it or if I don't.

Ok,let me know, when ota of JB comes out.
This can be useful for me too...

[Q] What happens with root?

Hello XDA members
I was wondering, when the new android sandwich comes out, and you got a rooted and S-off HTC sensation. But not custom rom. What will happen to the root and S-off when you update to the new android sandwich?
Thanks
Want to know too ahehhe
We'll lose root but keep S-OFF I'd imagine
Cool, thanks for the answer
I have perm-rooted my Sensation and i was wondering when the new official update from HTC comes out will i be able to install it automatically like when i was not rooted or because i am S-Off it will not let me?
Thanks
i could be wrong but no you wont be able to perform an ota update. im only saying this because the last ota update failed because the update looks for the stock recovery in order to update the system. seeing that you are rooted i assume you have cwm installed and if this ota update does indeed look for the stock recovery than it will fail. the only way around this is to either instal a stock ruu and lose root or instal the stock recovery and again lose root. either way you are gonna lose root.
Could you give me a link where there is a guide to install the stock recovery?

Depends. If you're just running the original rom which came on your phone but rooted, it should still allow ota updates, but you'll lose root (but keep s-off). If you're on a custom rom you won't receive an ota.
To OP, if you ran an ruu or ota of ice cream sandwich, as eddy says, you'll lose root but remain s-off. That said, a custom ics rom will probably come out weeks/months before an official HTC update
Well, when we got the RUU, we can extract and repack to our rooted ROM
It should be this if i am right ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559

That's true, but we'll see aosp ics roms long before we have sense skinned ones, as cyanogen et al don't need to spend months porting frameworks.

not entirely true. i was rooted on stock rom when the last ota rolled out. i tried installing it but it failed. i did a lil search here and found a few people mentioned that it failed due to cwm and they also mentioned that you should try flashing back the stock recovery. i tried that and it installed successfully. easy way to get the stock recovery is to instal the correct ruu of your rom. but as we all know it wipes out everything off your phone. i did find this guide which the stigx has asked for (sorry buddy didnt see you there ) which shows you how to extracted the stock recovery off of the ruu and than flash it back to your phone.

But if I need to follow your guide i have to have the OTA update file,w hich haven't comet out yet. What do i Do? It seems so hard to remove root and custom recovery :'(
But thank for your answer !
well the general idea is to get your stock recovery back without losin your data. so really all you need to do is flash your stock recovery reboot your phone and check for updates. if updates are available: system>about phone>check for updates, download the update and install. it shouldnt fail cause you have stock recovery instead of cwm. in short just do the top part of the guide and skip the rest cause you dont have the updates file on your computer.
So if i do step 1-12 I will have normal phone? Just like I started or do i still keep root?
Thank you so much for your hep !

yes you do 1-12 but you keep root. the only difference is that you will no longer have cwm for flashing, back up, and all other goodies. but once you run the ota and it installs you lose root.
but have a look at the link frederikh just posted. seems alot better than the current method. im reading over it now
Thanks for the answers!
I think i will go with the link frederikh gave me But God bless you Divine! Thank you for your help !

[Q] Returning to stock [i9020a]

I just wanted to make sure that I understood the process of returning my phone to stock before I make a mistake.
All I've done since I purchased the phone was root it and unlock the bootloader. I have not loaded any custom roms.
So If I understand this correctly I need to:
1) Flash the Stock Image (which should include the stock recovery?)
2) Use fastboot to lock the bootloader
The reason I'm wanting to return the phone to stock is to receive OTA updates. I never use any apps requiring root, and don't plan on loading any custom roms.
I never did find a 2.3.4 stock image for the I9020A..
you should actually be able to get ota updates no problem. it'll just remove root every time you update.
it's probably not a good idea to lock the bootloader though cause if you ever want to unlock it again in the future you'll have to wipe everything from your phone. your best bet is to just flash stock recovery so you can install the update
i'm pretty sure that works, but hopefully someone else can verify just so you don't get some bad information lol
I heard the same thing about OTA updates. If you're phone is rooted and you're using the original rom, you'll get the update but you'll have to root your phone once again.
I haven't tried this myself so I cannot verify it.
It's just the word on the street, you know!

Using my zip yes... it flashes Bootloader, Radio, Boot, System and on first boot (and any other time recovery changes) Recovery is flashed. All you got to to is lock the bootloader and that wipes user data and usb storage.

[Q] How to get OTA updates when rooted + I need stock JB recovery.img please

I wonder how can I get OTA updates while I'm rooted. I know that I need stock recovery for this and now I'm using CWM on my JB XOOM (wifi). Is there any extra requisits besides the stock recovery?
Also, does anyone have the JB stock recovery img to share here??

Since you are rooted it makes no sense to unroot and grab OTA when the exact same stock OTA will be posted here by Stachre.

Oh didnt knew that. So he posts a flashable update.zip for us, good! But anyway, it might be good to have a stock recovery.img in some cases (like RSD 3 issue needs the boot.img)
Thanks
Yes, but I havent checked to see if the JB images were available...if they are they would be listed at motodev website.
And yes, Stachre does an update.zip that actually updates bootloader and system. It truly is a stock update that can be flashed in recovery with SU added - he rocks.

Relock to get OTA?

I am on 4.1.1, rooted inconia a700. Today I tried to let the system check for an update, but it refuses to do so.
I think it has to do with the unlocked bootloader. In order to get OTA, we have to relock.
The question is now, do we have to flash original (stock) recovery to flash OTA or will it work with clockwork recovery?
How do we proceed?

You have to flash the original stock rom. Not just the recovery.
I have heard 1 case where the user was still rooted and got ota, but only 1.

Do you and other devs are going to make flashable OTAs, so we don't have go through the whole process?

I'm not a Dev, I'm a Cook
The problem with OTA's, is that Acer has been delivering them as a "patch" update. Which means it's not a whole rom. It's set to patch existing files. This is a real pain, as each update is very specific about what it will work on. Typically it seems they use some type of binary check sum for each and every file. If even 1 of them is off, the update doesn't work. (just take a look at an installer script and you'll see what I mean)
The best bet, is to wait till we get a major update, then wait for one of us to do a system dump and compile it into a flashable custom rom.
A lot of people shy away from custom, but, it depends on how far the cook goes with modifying things. If it's just a re-pack, then it's pretty much stock.
MD

Could anyone with more programming skills than me try one of the following:
1) wrap this in a zip file we can flash from recovery
2) incorporate it into the Xposed framework
Many thanks if someone can accomplish this!
I think it's just HTC wanting us to buy new devices that's all.

Maybe you can try my patch: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tqxfjwwja3uaqsn/install-patch.zip
It uses a libssl.so from a LG Optimus L5 II (4.1.2) and it works on my TrekStor Surftab Ventos 10.1
If your device does't boot after you've installed it:
The patch creates a backup of your libssl.so at /system/libssl.backup.so, so just replace /system/lib/libssl.so with that backup file
Cheers, Xorg

Google has officially stated that Android 4.1.1 is vulnerable:
This is a notice for anyone else on the Stock ROM as I am pretty sure this was the last supported update from HTC.
Pretty sure my wife's HTC One S (Ville) is on this version. Will verify when I get home. Time to root and flash her phone this weekend

Do NOT update via the OTA update! It put me through a constant reboot cycle and I had to factory reset...

I'm not sure how to fix it, but this is why you're not supposed to install OTAs if you're not on stock recovery.

I'm s off, have twrp installed and on stock ROM. Would like to install this update, or get a 4.2.2 or 4.3 stable fully functional ROM. Do you think flashing stock recovery and then ota would work even if I'm s off. Should still be able to boot an ruu from fastboot even if I boot loop. Suggestions on custom roms?
Edit: Used flashalot's recovery switcher to flash stock recovery, rebooted, then flashed the ota update. After update I lost root, but still have s off.
Plan on fastboot flashing another recovery, then flashing su binary again from the new recovery.
Hope this helps.

This might help...
If you have the OTA.zip file... but custom recovery and such like TMUS application removed..
This will wipe your phone. Making a backup is not optional !!!
http://sadevil.org/blog/2012/12/23/manually-flashing-an-ota-update/
This looks somewhat straight forward.. If you want to get the OTA downloaded:
got to settings .. and manage to get the software update.. It will download eventually into your Download folder ..
Do not Apply the OTA at this point.. select install later!!!
pull the file on your PC/Mac/Linux box and modify as described in the URL above..
reboot your phone and the OTA should not bother you ... if you have pulled (like in remove) or at least renamed the OTA file..
Before you push Firmware.. and such make sure you have made a backup with CWM !!! or whatever method you are using!!!
also make sure you have your custom recovery image somewhere available and maybe a su.zip cwm file as you may loose root as well.. not sure..
If you have rooted your HTC one S your self - this should not be hard to DIY..
Currently I am at work and cannot try it out myself .. but definitly will do it once back at home later..
Godspeed to all of you brave hackers..

Same situation here. Stock ROM and Rooted and S-off. Constant nag to apply the OTA update but not working. Looking for a way to do it easy. How should I proceed? Don't want to wipe the phone and create all my settings again if possible. Can I reverse S-Off and apply OTA update somehow?
can any one provide me a link to the ota update
