[Q] Changing prl on the phne - Motorola Triumph

I get very bad signal at my home. Even when i go outside in to the backyard of the home it is not any better. I know the prl has to do with what cell towers it will connect to. If i change the prl on my cell phone will virgin mobile cut my service? Reading a lot of places that maybe the only way to fix the signal problem. But virgin mobile does not allow roaming i am also reading. So what will happen if i change the prl on my cell phone to one from sprint and pick up more towers then i am suppose to?
Thanks,

Will something like this work for me to fix the signal problems i have - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-AIR...gnal-Booster-airwave-/360463338188#vi-content

To answer your questions......Changing the PRL will not cause virgin mobile to cut your service BUT if you return the phone to them with a PRL change they could void your warrenty.Changing the PRL could help with signal but it's not 100%.I have tried multiple PRL's and have gotten either no boost, little boost,or in one case worse signal. You may have to try ALOT of PRL's to get one that works best for you in your area.
To do the PRL change for the first time you need to be on the stock ROM to find out your phone's MSL.Doing this for the first time can take a long time if all the drivers for your phone haven't been loaded to your computer. Here's a list of stuff you need to do this.....Any cut app from google play, alogcat app from google play, and QPST 2.7 build 3.66 downloaded to your computer.
There should be a step by step guide on here for this.If you can't find it message me for help on this. Also please thank this post if it helps.

If do not change the prl i am set to pickup all the sprint cell towers?
If i change prl i will gain roaming so like i could use verizon's cell towers?
I found this site - http://forums.androidcentral.com/vi...l-swap-v-vm-latest-prl-sprint-towers.html#anb and i found this site - http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1725703-HOW-TO-Motorola-Triumph-PRL-Swap Are this two site the right way to switch the prl?
I also read Roaming does not work on Virgin Mobile! While roaming, you will not receive your phone calls or texts, and you can't make calls or send texts! Your data will also not work when roaming. If this true?
Where can i get the latest prl file? I see the ones on the two sites i found are from late 2011. Thought there might be a newer one out.

Changling PRLs will not allow you to use Verizon towers. Changing PRLs will only be of benefit if it provides an update of tower locations and allow you higher priority. VM users might get lower priority than Sprint users.
If you are using an old PRL, you may not have access to some recent tower installations.
VM users can only use Sprint networks. We do not have roaming privileges. Consequently, you cannot roam ... outside of Sprint networks. There are so-called hybrid PRLs, but i have never heard of anyone making one of those work. Other networks have their protocols in place and changing to a hybrid PRL is not likely to give you roaming privileges. It might provide you with the tower locations for Verizon, but that does not mean that you will be able to access them.
On the outside chance that you could, you would likely be breaking the law and certainly VM will cancel your account and/or bill you if caught.

I am trying to change my PRL using QPST and after it says success i reboot and no PRL tried about 36 times its really annoying?? Any help please?

Bad network signal? Try a new 4G sim card.

I have tried everything in the world to get my wife's Thunderbolt on par with mine. Out of the box, mine has worked like a champ, while she's on her 2nd phone. (Bad power button and 0-1 bars constantly.) Anyway, after getting home and looking at her replacement phone, I noticed the same issue, 0-1 bars. I thought to myself that there has to be more to this. I put her phone next to mine and I had 3-4 bars, while she had her usual 0-1 bars (74% time without a signal.) I thought to check the phones info under settings and bam, I found my problem. Software and everything was exactly the same, except our PRL's. Mine is 13004 and hers is 15008. So I immediately jumped online and Googled how to updated the PRL on the Thunderbolt. Apparently the PRL files are stored on the 4G sim card, and since *228 no longer works on our phones, the only option to get a different PRL is to get a new sim card. I checked the sim card that came with her phone and the date reads.....102810. I then checked the date on my sim card and it read....020411. So I will be going to Verizon tomorrow morning and requesting a sim that was made on or at least near the date that mine was produced and hopefully this will fix our problem. I will update this thread once I know for sure. So if you did this and it helped, please feel free to post your results. Also, when we swapped the phones out, we didn't get a new sim card since each card is tied to that specific number. The rep just put the old sim and sdcard in the new phone incase anyone was wondering. Hope this helps.
Update: Just left my Verizon store and as of right now, I didn't have to swap out my sim card. The rep checked and he said it showed that my wife's phone was under the regular nationwide network, while my phone was under the hybrid network.(Whatever that is.) So he sent out an network update to my wife's phone that should bring hers on par with mine. He told me not to turn off my phone because it may take a couple of hours to push through, but once it does, our prls or signal strength in our area should be the same. Once the update pushes through, I'll post the results.
Update to the update: After letting the phone stay on for 8 hours, got home, pulled the sim and battery out for 30 seconds, popped them back in and bam!!!!!! 3-4 bars of constant signal strength. Didn't have to change the sim card, but the PRL number did change from 15008 to 13006. (Which 13xxx means you're on the Hybrid Network.) If you're have a low to bad network signal, I would highly suggest you call Verizon or go into a store and have them make sure you're on the Hybrid network and not the Regular Nationwide Network. Have them send an PRL update/upgrade to your line and see if it helps. Worked like a miracle for my wife's phone.
I was having the same problem as your wife. Called Verizon so many times wasting my time talking to tech support getting no help. Then miraculously called one more time and the girl fixed it. No idea how though haha. I wouldn't be surprised if her problem has to do with her sim though.

I wonder if they can manually push the prl ota now..it wouldnt hurt to ask that too.
would love to hear an update to this, as my prl is 15008.
might bother the verizon rep at work about it see if they know anything.
At my house I usually have 1-2 bars, and i always thought it was because of coverage not being great here. If it is just a prl issue, hopefully we can get a fix!

Why am I not hearing any 13004 prls. Am I a rare case? Also, this might be device and area specific, but that 15008 is horrible in my area while my 13004 allows me to keep a constant 3-4 bars everywhere I go.
My prl is 15011 and have e bars of 3g in most places
Again they auto update with reboot. SO REBOOT YOUR PHONE IF YOU HAVE COVERAGE ISSUES!
And you don't need to EVER SWAP A SIM CARD ONCE IT HAS BEEN PROVISIONED EVER! Like all other GSM technologies the PRL with eHRPD (Verizon's CDMA LTE version) is AUTO PUSH being it's UPDATED AUTOMATICALLY. YOU DON"T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT EVER!
The LTE PRL versions are DIFFERENT than the CDMA phone series. There is no uniform number because they are updated at different times with the IMSI on the SIM card.
Also the signal meter on the Thunderbolt I was told that is mainly for VOICE! You can have EXCELLENT DATA on LTE with even 1-bar of signal.

Yes, that's what I'm writing about, voice service. And no, its not auto updating. Even after a battery and sim card pull for 30 seconds, its the same PRL number with the same signal problems. Average of -104 - 107dbs, which shows 70%+ time without a signal. She drop calls and her voice calls are in and out. This is her second phone, with the same signal results. So its not the phone and its not auto updating to the towers nearest to our house.

After reading this thread, I checked out my PRL version. For some reason, I have never received a PRL update. My PRL version was 1. I have rebooted my phone several times, along with battery pulls, for the past week yet no update was received. I ended up using the method mentioned over at Android Central (h ttp://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-thunderbolt/72724-problems-3g-data-dont-hard-reset-read-first.html) to put my phone back to RevA for data. I rebooted and still no new PRL. I put it back to eHRPD and rebooted. I then received a new PRL, version 15008. I don't know if it has made a difference with my coverage because I just made the change. I just figured I would mention I had to do some trickery to get my Thunderbolt to pull down a new PRL.
Thanks mispes1 for that info on what you did. I found this thread because of my Signal being weird. I just got my Thunderbolt activated yesterday and my prl was also 1. Used that thread and rebooted a few times, and after switching back my PRL finally updated. I'll have to see if this helps. It's nice to know how to switch to normal 3g network as well for when I'm having trouble with the hybrid one. Also my PRL is 15011.
Just checked, and mine is 13004...I wonder if this chagnes based on if you are in a LTE network area or not
I am have 15008 and my connection is terrible. I have done battery pulls, everything trying to get my PRL to update, might call verizon at some point and ask about it. I see people with these 13000 something PRLs talking about great coverage. I am at -86DB and my connection to 4G goes in and out all the time.
15008 as well here, but I haven't really had too many issues, the only times i've had issues is going inside large buildings around the 4G edge. Though my speeds haven't been too impressive (Fastest I've seen is 8Mbps on 4G), though I don't know if a PRL will fix that.

I must have had a different PRL before i rooted, cause I was doing 20-30 consistently down, and then I rooted my phone and now I get 6-7 consistently.
I have the same problem pulling down PRL updates. I realized the other day that my version was 1. To get mine to update I had to use the ##778# trick and put the modem into Rev A, reboot, then back into eHRPD, reboot again and then it pulled down a new PRL. The funny thing is that I have jumped between 1 and 15008 at least twice in the last 24 hours and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why.
Give this a shot though to see if you can get a new PRL. Also, I believe the most recent version is 15011. My friend got his t-bolt today and that was his version out of the box.

You dont ever see H? H is the symbol for HSPA+ or 4G which is basically the same (according to t-mobile). If you never see an H then that is odd. Was it a fresh install and did you do a full wipe of your last rom before flashing?
it's no "4G" icon....but it's 4G speed when you see "H"
I like to see 4G icon too
if your seeing 1X thats cdma lol probably simple, i had this problem, do this go to settings, then wireless networks, then mobile network, and then access point names and make sure u see it on tmobile not simple, if it is on simple tap on the dot next to tmobile. then after that back out go to phone hit *#*#4636#*#*, then u will see a menu, go to phone information and scroll down , make sure it is on wcdma preferred.... let me know how u make out buddy
When i installed this ROM i went through ROM manager and cleared cache, delvik cache, wiped data, and back up...so from my knowlege it was a clean install.
I also dont ever see 3g or H or H+ sadly, i want this problem fixed

hmmm, do u have an older style simcard? in another words did u take it out of ....lets say a g1 and stick it in the g2x? or did it come with g2x new? cuz older sim cards are having problems with newer phones u would have to grab a new one from tmobile they would give u one for free if that was the case .....also did u skip the sign in process? (google acct) cuz for some reason u cant do that u have to sign in rite away... ok try this first hard reboot, hold vol up and power until it reboots and see what happens if a nogo then also try one more thing go back to settings , wireless networks, mobile networks, then network operators and hit search network like 5 times it might give u an error let it say it then try again then go back to access points and click on tmobile not the dot part on the actual word tmobile and then u should see the list hit your menu and see if theres a reset apn try that then save, also minor thing to try go into ur browser go to setting and delete cache , history, cookies, and form data.

What I mean is that these are GSM phones, not CDMA (Sprint and Verizon). Is it possible you're roaming on another network, not T-Mobile? Maybe you don't even have 4G signal where you are.
Open your dialpad and dial *#*#4636#*#* then go to phone information. When your phone displays 1x what does it say is your current network, and then look down several lines and what does it say is the network type?
Anyone know does this phone support GSM1x??? It's a technology to allow roaming between GSM and CDMA networks.
Well under network type it says unknown although i am :
Network: T-Mobile
Roaming: Not Roaming
GSM Service: In Service
GPRS: Connected
Network Type: Unknown
I am also under WCDMA only

Googling my fingers off here lol. The only references I can find to 1x have to do with CDMA networks (Sprint and Verizon which the G2X is not compatible with) and GSM1x which seems to have been experimented with about a decade ago as a possible evolution for GSM providers to utilize CDMA technologies or something like that.
Nowadays GSM carriers here (AT&T and T-Mobile) use UMTS/WCDMA for their 3G data whereas Verizon and Sprint use CDMA2000 (which includes CDMA 1x). The 2 technologies are not compatible but GSM1x was designed to be some sort of a bridge between GSM and CDMA2000.
Have you ever had 3G/4G access thru T-Mobile where you live?

Simple mobile 4G on gingerbread update!

Hi for all of the Simple Mobile users. I ran into a difficulties trying to get 4G internet on my new LG G2x with gingerbread update. Per Simple mobile website, to make MMS and internet work all you have to do is create a new APN for Simple Mobile in apn settings (http://www.mysimplemobile.com/Support-Center-Phone-Programming.aspx#LG), move the green button to new APN, hit save, reboot your phone and you good to go. However it says there also that you CANNOT modify original T-mobile APN that is already created in the phone.
Now here is the problem with gingerbread update. After you rebooted your phone you can go ahead and use internet but right when you got your first page the green screen coming up with t-mobile customer service info and it says there that there is no connection with your phone, please call the number provided below. You might have luck actually getting on the first page but after that - nothing. What happens is after you start using internet your phone stop reading information from newly created APN and automatically switching back to the original default T-mobile APN. And it doen't matter if you reboot the phone or not, it will still make an automatic switch.
Now after discussing this issue here on the board, with great help from jboxer we came to a solution. Jboxer said nobody done this before so I figured why not try it and it actually worked.
All you need to do is root the phone using these tools:
1. Install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
2. root it with this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
I am a noob in flashing/rooting the phones but it took me only 20 min. to do this procedure. Right after I root the phone I went to menu - settings - wireless & networks - mobile network settings - access point names - hit on T-mobile APN and now you got the opportunity to modify it! The rest - do exactly what the simple mobile website tells you to do.
Hope this helps!

That is not how I said to fix it. Rooting the phone doesn't allow you to modify the default settings. In fact, rooting is not even necessary to do my fix. What I said to do is to flash my file that sets a new default APN for Simple Mobile. Here is the thread below. Sucks to be miquoted so badly.

Well, rooting allowed me to modify default settings.

All I did is rooted the phone like you explained here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
and I was able to modify original T-mobile APN.

That is not how I said to fix it. Rooting the phone doesn't allow you to modify the default settings. In fact, rooting is not even necessary to do my fix. What I said to do is to flash my file that sets a new default APN for Simple Mobile. Here is the thread below. Sucks to be miquoted so badly.

lol. Well props for making a flashable fix (best method IMO)
I guess once rooted it allows the settings to stick? Others have had luck with APN managers from the market which backup and write custom APN entries which works.
So the problem is that the APN keeps defaulting to Tmobile and the solution is to somehow edit and Save the default Tmobile APN setting with information that pertains to Simple Mobile so that it sticks.
Glad its fixed either way.
another way to fix it is by going into lg hidden menu
dial 1809#*999#>KR Setting>Set KR Settings
this removes all of the apns including tmo's then u just put in the simple apn nd ur good to go

Rooting would not make a difference here. All rooting means is that apps can request superuser (root) permissions to make changes to the system, and the app that sets the apn never requests root access so rooting the phone would not do anything here. Simple Mobile users were always able to make a new apn (default apns can never be modified). The problem is when they reboot it goes back to TMO's settings. Have you tried rebooting yet. My fix sets a new default apn for Simple Mobile which can be set and stick throughout rebooting, etc.
Also, as stated in my other thread, my fix DOES NOT require root. It only requires that Clockworkmod Recovery be installed.
Dude,
I have been using SIMPLE MOBILE forever and not had the problem you are speaking of. Just follow the instructions on the SM website. Set up the new apn. When you reboot hold the volume button up while rebooting and you should be set. Could it be you aren't setting up the apn properly?
And on some of the ROMS you can edit the T-Mobile apn.

Speaking of Simple Mobile, do they allow using the Wifi hotspot feature on the G2x? I saw in the company's FAQ that tethering was not allowed on SM phones, but wasn't sure if that covered hotspotting as well.
I have a question for you guys, I just got an unlocked G2x to use on simple mobile that I haven't activated, On t-mobiles site it says it supports for 4G, but on simple mobiles site it says it's only approved for 3g data, my question is do I need to get the 3g $40 plan or $60 4g plan to get the most out of the data on this phone?
Do both plans give you the same volume of data (i.e., 500Mb, 1Gb, etc)? If so, go with the cheaper plan. The systems hardly ever let you get the full speed anyway. In Thailand I only get between 2 to 3Mbps usually and it is plenty fast.

I have ran into this problem. I recently obtained a G2X and SIMPLE Mobile SIM and account. I paid the $40 for the "3G" connection. However it seems that the speed is throttled to around 118kbps down. So I did some testing and found that forcing the phone to use "2G Only" allowed up to around 160kbps down. This is just insane! I have read where some people on SIMPLE Mobile 3G have been able to get around 1500-3000kbps but have no idea how they manage that. My Optimus V on Virgin Mobile's 3G averages around 600-1000kbps down. That is usable. The SIMPLE Mobile one is just crap. I hate to have to pay more for less, unless you count the unlimited talk in that, but I may be sticking with VM for a bit longer. Any ideas how I can get the speed up on the SM one without paying the $60/month?

I mainly use google voice for my text and such since I ported my number to GV and all. But I just tried sending a picture message to my other phone's actual number from my G2X without google voice and it sent, just took forever. As for sms though it has always worked. This is with my phone showing "4G".

Be sure not to pay the $12.99 for the SIM directly from SM. Go on amazon and buy one for about $1.99 or if you are a Prime member get the one I did for $2.49 w/ free 2-day shipping. Won't hurt to try with it being that cheap.

odd.. I just switched to the G2X and bought a new Sim card with 4g.
before I had an LG optimus T with the 3g and always got 3g speeds around 2000kbps
On the 4g with my G2X I get anywhere from 2000 to 5000kbps. The really odd thing is its either 4g or 2g. I'll be sitting at work and it will drop from 4g to 2g.. making me think "wtf happened to 3g"?
Another thing I noticed is the hand off between edge and 3g was much smoother. With the G2x It will often completely drop all connections, data and voice, then pop back up with the different speed.

Yeah SM is just stupid slow on "3G". I actually got faster speeds when I forced 2G only network. My wife's Samsung Gravity Smart also has the same speeds as my G2x. I am thinking of switching to the $30/month 5GB of 4G data w/ 100 minutes that T-Mobile offers just to try it out. I can use my GrooveIP to make/receive calls if need be.
this helps alot cuz im about to get simple mobile...thanks!

Just be ready for super slow speeds if you don't pay for their "4G" package. I ran some back to back tests yesterday with my SIMPLE Mobile sim and a T-Mobile sim in my G2x.
SM "4G" 118kbps down/ 132kbps up
SM "2G" 159kbps down/ 131kbps up
TM "4G" #1 885kbps down/ 348kbps up
TM "2G" 207kbps down/ 133kbps up
TM "4G" #2 1505kbps down/ 524kbps up
all ran back to back. So even T-Mobile 2G is faster than SM 3G. lol

Signal Roaming?

I have a rooted Tmobile phone (Octane) and loving it. This isn't a 'root' question, but a signal issue that I noticed before and after the root (not related to rooting).
Anyhow, when I leave an area (in my vehicle) that has low Tmobile signal, it switches to ATT and says "no service". That's fine, but what I noticed is when I return to the same area, it will take an additional 4-5 miles of driving into a strong Tmobile signal area before it pick up the Tmobile signal.
In my area, there are no agreements to roam on ATT's network, so my phone is dead until I re-enter Tmobile signal area.
My question is, it is a nuisance that my phone can't use Tmobile towers as a priority. It seems to hold onto ATT's towers longer than it should. What can I do to fix this issue if possible?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: My wife has the same phone and it does the same thing.
Have you changed modems? That seems to fix many issues pwople have with connection issues.
Not sure to be honest. I used this process to install Octane's ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1223765
I did see something in Odin about "Modem" but don't know if that is the proper way to install a modem or not.
This thread will tell you how to change the modem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192436
FB also recommends one in that thread iirc. But other members have better luck with different ones. Im told it depends on your location but nobody has said which modem is better in what part of the country.
Awsome, thanks for the leg work on finding that for me! Is there a way where I could opt out of roaming so my phone uses Tmobile as a priority 'all' the time?
This is just incase the modem doesn't seem to help. Just one idea I had.
Also, KJ6 modem is the one I need correct?
Not sure of the roaming opt out.
FB puts the KG4 modem is his personal build of VB. Im using KG4. I would try all of the GB modems to see the results.

I don't have this phone so I am not sure how to do it. You might do some other searches on loading prls with qpst on similar Motorola phones. To pull it is simple if you can get qpst working with it. You just hit read instead of write.

Looks like it's a bit more intensive. I'll have access to the phone all weekend on a family camping trip. If I can get wifey and mom to watch the kids, I'll dig it out of there
I don't mean to sound overly noobish... I understand what PRLs are, but how could changing them be beneficial? Is there some way to just simply have you phone lock to the tower with highest signal strength?
I live in an apartment where I get next to no sprint signal which drops calls like crazy, if I stand in certain spots in the building I can get it to roam which gives me 3 bars... and calls are clear and never drop... I assume the PRL has something to do with this?

With Sprint introducing 800Mhz 1xA for voice, PRLs can be used to search for that signal over 1900Mhz PCS. Also, it can be used to force roaming

Is this something that can be selected on demand similar to the wifi selections? I remember seeing somewhere on the phone to select a network, but it only has Auto and Sprint.
No, a PRL has to either be pushed/updated by the carrier via OTA or flashed by a user.

Try Roam Control have to Google it.

I second the Roam Control suggestion, have used it for a year and a half now on my Epic....I force into roaming every day in my home office at work. Even then the signal fluctuates some roaming Verizon, but its almost always crappy with Sprint while at work...our building sucks for cell penetration.

I called and complained about that very same thing and they offered me an Airave for free. Might be worth trying considering they can terminate your service if you roam too much.

Here's a zipped folder with some of Sprint's current LTE PRLs. The xx006 PRLs contain information pertaining to the future LTE developments that are rolling out. Below's the contents of what's in the zip and what they are, to my knowledge these are the ones that allow 3G roaming:
16006: LTE PRL (don't have much information on this one)
24006: CL LTE PRL (recommended)
54006: Advanced World Mode CL LTE PRL (CL and designed for international travel)
56006: LTE PRL (found on demo devices at the stores)
I'm not going to do a write up for how to flash PRLs or pull them from the Photon Q. Mostly because I'm lazy and can't be bothered, and there's plenty of well written tutorials floating around XDA as is.
QPST?
I tried to pull this guy up in QPST as soon as I got it to flash the 1119 PRL, but I wasn't able to get QPST to see the phone. Anyone else had this issue? Or resolve it?

Trying to get my PRL updated as well and QPST is not having any of it. I tried similar steps to the previous photon without success, anyone know what needs to be done here?
I have tried many different ways to get a custom PRL on this thing without success. I can get it into dev mode using ##3424# and then I also check developers mode in the Development menu and still can not do it. QPST just does not see it. One thing that does happen with the above steps is that windows tries to install drivers for various motorola stuff. QC interface and the like. I can not locate those drivers anywhere. Anyone?

The S3 is qualcomm from what I heard. Thought it was the same as the Evo Lte.
Hope it doesn't have those garbage Via licensed cdma chipset.
On another note, if you do load a different prl on this device, like 12124, let me know if LTE still works.

US GS3s are Qualcomm. We have a few of the newer QPST build links on our site.
We're able to push/pull from VIA chipsets as well. The Galaxy Nexus was fully flashed to Cricket and that involves more than just a PRL.
I came to this thread looking for a method of obtaining the MSL/SPC for the Photon Q. I am not a Sprint customer.
