I just finished installing all the stereo parts in my car only to find out that my Captivate won't work with the voice dialing of the stereo. I guess it's the phone's fault as my wife's Focus works just fine as did my old HTC Pure. She won't trade phones with me so I'm stuck trying to find a ROM that has this.
With Samsung stating it will be fixed (added) in 2.2.1; does that mean only the 2.2.1 ROMS will have this feature? I'm currently running Cognition 4.3.1 and it does not have it; but would like to only try new ROMS that have it. What ROMS do have the feature?
Thank you for your input.
Firefly supports voice dialing. You have to start the Voice Dialling app and then say the command.
What I'm looking for is what the Droid Incredible has. I paired it to my stereo and when I hit the call button on the stereo; it launched what appeared to be a bluetooth voice dialer application that allowed me to speak into the stereo.
I just tried firefly and it did have that app, but it crashed as soon as I tried it. It also crashed the music app, failed to mount the storage drives, crashed when trying to put it in debugging mode and pretty much was unstable since it booted. I then tried to use one click odin and it went to a blue screen half way through the process. It'll be a fun night.
Probably not what you want to hear, but my BT in the car works great on my 'stock' set up. I think it has more to do with the kernel/ modem configuration than the ROM though.
dragon has this. many people are pairing it with choice dialer.

I can't get Choice Dialer to work well at all. ONe example: "CAll Tom Jones", it says "CAll Tom Jones?", I say "Yes", it says "Try again". Argh...
ANd most of th time it just doesn't understand me at all.
I believe this is the apk you need. I know cog doesn't come with it. This is an old one so I don't know if there is a newer version available but when you pair your bluetooth and hit the voice command on your stereo or bluetooth set, make this the default app when the prompt shows up. It won't give you a voice prompt but if you wait 2 secs and then speak it should dial for you. Only problem is that your phone has to be awake but at least you can use voice commands from your bluetooth set. Just leave your phone plugged in and awake while your in the car. This is the only option I have found.
That worked.
Thank you for the apk. That works.

It's not unusual to be called by anyone
It's not unusual to have a text from anyone
but when I try to use voice dial for anyone
It's not unusual to see me cry

Boy, ain't that the truth. It really chaps me that the one thing that should be solid on a Cell now-a-days is voice dial. Can't believe that OLD OLD technology from Microsoft on Winmo SHINES so much better than Android. Maybe that's the only thing that does, but in my opinion, one of the most important things for a cell phone...at least if you anticipate wanting to use it while driving.
That was a tom jones joke ...
I'm glad the Voice Dialer apk worked. I couldn't get it to work on any Captivate ROMs. Most reoriented i9000 ROMs have a working version, but I find all of the i9000 ROMs to be severely lacking in performance compared to KB1 ROMs.
My preferred solution in either case is to use Bluetooth Launch and Voice Search. Bluetooth Launch can be found here. Run it from the app drawer, it brings up a full list of installed apps and available activities. Choose Voice Search, and then the "VoiceRecognition" activity (must have Google's Voice Search installed first of course). Then, hit your call button, and set Bluetooth Launch as the default activity when it asks. From then on, your call button will launch Voice Actions, which support not only "call <contact>" but also a ton of other commands, including controlling music, text msgs, etc. I love sending texts without touching my phone, and it works flawlessly for me so far.
Hey guys I am a brand new T-Mobile customer as of yesterday (coming from US Cellular) and I got the G2x phone. Previously I had the Mesmerize (Galaxy S).
I've got just a couple questions that are probably simple enough. First of all, as soon as I got the phone last night, I downloaded the LG Update Tool from the LG website and updated the phone to Gingerbread. Now today it appears the update is OTA. Is the update I got last night the same as the OTA update, so I don't need to update again?
For whatever reason, when I go into the settings to check for updates, it keeps saying there was an authentication error rather than just saying there are no updates. Is that normal? My build number is GRI40 and Android version is 2.3.3.
Second, on my old phone, in the pull down menu, at the top there were buttons to toggle WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and silent mode. On this phone, there is nothing there, just big letters that say T-Mobile. Is there a way to get the toggle switches? I found them pretty useful.
And lastly, in the pull down menu, it constantly says I have a new voice mail and to dial some weird number, with no way to clear it. I've already set up my voice mail box and I don't have any messages. What is this notification that won't go away? Thanks for any help!
PS:
Any easy way to root this phone?
New to T-Mobile, just got the G2X.....read the threads.
The update is the same. In your phone settings under about it should say Android Version 2.3.3 and v21e. The pull down menu toggles are available with Cyanogenmod and some other custom ROM's. As far as your notification that won't go away, not really sure whats up with that. On a personal note, I would take that phone right back to the store and exchange it for a Sensation. I've been an Android user since the G1 and I can say without doubt this is the worst phone I've ever owned. It is plagued with bugs.

Welcome to the G2x!! In the next few hours you will either be flamed for buying a crappy phone, or welcomed for buying a Great phone. I personally think its a great phone.
Your questions:
1. The LG update and the TMO OTA are almost the same. Same basebands and builds. Looks like the OTA does change some icon colors. Stay tuned here for how to get both.
2. There is NO in the top bar tool for that. But there is a widget called power control that does the same thing. Check it out.
3. I really don't know about the voice mail and will leave that to someone else.
As far as rooting, there are several good how to root and how to 1 step root threads located on this forum. Its quick and easy. Make sure you look at the Recovery threads too for the easy 1 step recovery options. You'll find these located in the General sub forum
And remember, use the search feature for any questions....many have already been answered. Check out the search feature in the general sub forum and type, How to root your g2x, or how to mod your g2x. You will get some good hits.
Welcome.
Search sucks, isn't always that easy.
But I can definately recommend you read the stickies here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049154
They are very very helpful.
Thanks guys... I fixed the voice mail notification by sending myself a voicemail from another phone and then deleting it from mine.
So does anybody else get a authentication error when they use the phone to check for a software update after having used the LG Updater to install Gingerbread? In my phone the build is listed as GRI40, but on the LG Update Tool it reads the phone's build as V21E.
EDIT:
And I was seriously considering the Sensation. But in the end, the only advantage seemed to be the extra 128MB of RAM, which doesn't seem to help in benchmarks or usage. At first I thought qHD was going to be an advantage, but the screen just didn't pop and seemed washed out... unlike the G2X which looked much nicer, and I believe is IPS. Also from all the reviews I've seen the Tegra 2 seems faster than the dual core Snapdragon and Adreno 220 in the Sensation. Plus the Sensation having 1GB of internal storage is kind of lame, where as the G2X has 8GB!
With regard to the feature toggle widgets, I use a tool from the market called Elixir. It lets you set up your own widgets, among other cool things. For example, I have a widget on my home screen that has seven (not four) widgets across: silent/vibrate/normal ringer; wifi; GPS; Bluetooth; wifi hotspot; battery status; and day/date.
I got g2x and sensation. Only thing good on sensation is camera, and sense sucks. Screen like you say is washed out

I finally figured out the reason why Google Voice notifications for new messages weren't showing up for me. It turns out to be a stupid bug in GV.
Once I would be done setting up GV, I would go into "Settings" and check the option for "Voicemail display - view and play voicemails from the phone call log". Well, I accidentally found out this is the culprit. I unchecked this today just for the heck of it, and lo and behold GV notifications starting appearing again
This had been bugging me no end for the last month. Hope this helps anybody else in a similar situation.

Thanks for the tip, but FWIW, I have always that option unchecked and I still have issues with getting notifications. the weird thing for me is that the notifications immediately pop up once I open google voice. I think there is some sort of issue with the app processing correctly in the background, but I'm no dev so not sure how/if you check for coding or troubleshoot how the program is written to interact with ICS.

I have tried that, too, yes. For the first couple of weeks, my GV was working fine, notifications and all. I had zero problems after setting it up. But the last 3+ weeks, it has been giving me zero notifications in my status bar until I open the app, and my email notifications (which are how I've been seeing that I have voicemails) are delayed quite a bit.

Are you completely stock or are you running a custom ROM? I'm running Scott's excellent CleanROM SE ver. 2.6 and perhaps this also has something to do with things? I have very little multitasking issues now and things keep trucking nicely in the background...

I can confirm it works on CleanROM DE 3.0, no experience with Scott's SE version however.
I did check with Scott, and he confirmed he does not see any reason why GV notifications would not work with any of his ROMs. In fact, he uses GV too and confirmed that he has not noticed any notification issues on his phone.

I did extensive tests and determined its the "Voicemail display" checkbox that breaks the notifications. The link in your post is absolutely required to correctly set up GV forwarding on the HOX. That is my standard procedure for setting up GV now.

Twice, now, I have uninstalled and disassociated GV from my phone, then reinstalled and redone the entire setup process. I've always uncheck the view and play voicemails in the call log option, as well as used the dialer code for ensureing the voicemail is properly forwarded and GV is used. Nothig has helped my issue.

I am running unrooted and totally stock, save for some disabling of preinstalled crapware. maybe i need to start enabling one AT&T service at a time to see if they help resolve the issue?

Though not very sure, I think I have read a number of people had notification issues around push emails and text messages on the stock ROM. People were either not getting these notifications or getting them quite late. Maybe this is more to do with problems in the notification subsystem of the stock ROM. Do you plan to root and unlock to install a custom ROM? Maybe that's the ticket to get this working.

I'm considering going over to CleanROM at some point. I'm stock now and just updated to 1.85 from the OTA. I waited a few on the update and read some claims that this update helped some of the general notification issues. Doesn't seem to have helped me with GV notifications but ill give it a few days (updated yesterday afternoon). I've been holding off rooting because I'm leery about it effecting my company's IT privileges and forced encryption as I rely heavily on my corporate email and am forced to endure some heavy administrative control due to sensitivity of the client work I deal with.
It does seem that rooting and running a custom rom is the way to eventually go. The devs here are so swift at identifying and fixing these little issues. I just need to take the time to parse through the thousands of posts regarding the custom roms I've looked at and see if they'll work for me.

If it helps I can confirm all notifications are now working for me on Scott's CleanROM DE 3.0. It is a great ROM, very lightweight with most of bloat removed including Sense launcher (replaced by Apex, which is fantastic). Scott is extremely active in addressing any issues and continued development of all his ROMs.
Feel free to reach out to me if you decide to move to this one and need any clarification or help. Good luck.
Yeah, I haven't had any notification problems since I switched to CleanROM.

Thanks a lot for the info and offer. I will most likely look into CleanROM DE later in the week when I have some free time. I've read about it quite a bit, but I am not well-versed in rooting phones and flashing new ROMs, so I will likely need all the help I can get. I am definitely a noob, but I read these boards extensively, so I'll do my research and possibly PM if I've got any specific questions that I can't find answers for when going into a potential root.
Hi everyone.
First off, let me say I did search for my issue, but really could not find anything that was relevant to all of my issues. And, if this is in the wrong place, please let me know!
Now- I installed a bluetooth radio in my truck 2 weeks ago. I was running a rooted SCH-i535 on 4.2. Did not have anything other than root access, due to me dropping my phone and getting it replaced.(Only problem was cracked screen, worked flawlessly). Now, I was able to connect my radio and phone with bluetooth, and worked fine. I had a pin code on my phone, and was still able to hold down my phone button on my radio, and give voice commands no problem. Now, I get my replacement phone this past weekend from geek squad. I go in, give them my old phone, and tell them im going to browse the store, ill be back for the other phone. I come back to get it, and its up and running. I get in my truck, get the phone and radio to sync, set my phone down, and try to make a call....I can not use voice commands. I hold the button on the radio, and it tells me service is not available. Tried just using a swipe unlock. same thing. Now, I forgot to mention, geek squad went ahead and performed the OTA 4.3 update while setting up my phone. I can use the phone and it will use the bluetooth for the calls if I select it from a phone book, and I can receive calls too. Its just that the voice control will not work...its almost if s-voice is not seeing that I am making a command or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated, because I loved having a truly hands free set up in my truck. Thank you for any help!
Have the same problem. I'm on rooted unlocked vzw 4.3 but I had this problem on 4.1.2 as well. Bluetooth calls connect but media not coming through (it's connected in BT settings). Occasionally the media will come through as well. I tried clearing cache just for BT through TiBu and emediately restarting phone which mostly worked on 4.1.2 but not on 4.3. I also tried a full factory reset and a clean re-install of the rom (I always clean install). Problem persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Anyone have ANY ideas?! This is very irritating!
bump?
Try this see if help.
1) In settings-> sound -> enable "Touch Sound".
or
2) Make sure lock screen is enabled and use dial pin or swype.
First let me state my current phone is s-off and rooted, but otherwise stock. I have been playing with some lockscreen replacements but not much else altering the phone.
I do also have google voice running for voicemails (I like the notification system, the inbox style tracking and the transcribing) and this was running on my rezound as well so may very well be the issue but not sure.
This occurred a lot on my last phone (rezound) and I chalked it up to it being a little older. But last night it happened on this phone (at home where I have excellent service), my girlfriend called twice and I got no notifications until google voice picked it up and notified me I had a voicemail (she normally doesnt let the voicemail hit so I often never know she calls until its much later and she is much angrier).
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it a verizon thing, a google voice thing or something that just happens sometimes regardless?
