I have the wifi only version running stock ics. Does usb host with the otg cable work with a stock device yet?
I have tried flash drives, card readers and got nothing. I know it work once before. Did ics disable this option? Is the only way to get usb host with the otg cable on the xoom through root?
Thanks.
I amnot sure if it works on stock roms. But I assume it should. I rooted my device the moment I received it and installed custom ics rom from team eos and usb otg work great. No issues with it and gets auto mounted.

It will not work unless used for stock updates from Motorola (Recovery). The Xoom or ICS actually knows the usb drive is there but it has to gain higher level access that only root privileges can give. So Rooting will solve this issue although rooting is not the answer for everything.
Keyboard and mouse functions should work properly on the stock device though....
Thank you for the help. From what I've read elsewhere, it sounded like I needed to root to get that to work. Just wanted to be sure. Sad, as this worked before ics for me.
I have no issues rooting as my phone has been rooted for sometime now. Is there a difference in roms and kernels and the rooting process between a WiFi only xoom and a 3g/4g xoom? I would ask this in the proper section, but I don't have enough posts to do so yet.

There you go.
For rooting, use lordAIOTool. Credits go to xxlordxx for his great tool

Thanks for the great info.
Loading the WiFi ROM will give me full usb host capabilities? Or do I need a special kernel or different ROM than what's posted?
I'm just looking to read thumb drives, card readers or any other storage type device.
Thanks again.
It will give you fat32 support so far. I came across ntfs support on xda news today posted by a senior member who compiled it with the kernel and made it generic to rooted roms. Didn't try that yet.
With rooted roms of team eos, you can mount flash drives and hdd of fat32 so far which is great and it auto mounts on /media/usb.

Funny, the links posted gives me a 404 page error. But i can access them from another thread. Not sure why.

I mean now since the sd card slot is working can someone tell me if anyone has been working on a rom?
Not gonna happen until Google releases the HC source code. There are lots of other threads so if you search you might find more details!
The problem is not so much the working sd card (this will help for Clockwork Recovery), but for the rom the HC source is required and that hasn't been released yet.
Once Clock Work is working, will we be able to install Froyo ROMs?
Umm, I guess you could create a Froyo ROM but the question is why would you want to?

CWM is now working on both models. You can find it in the development section.

Cool now all we have to do is wait for the hc release for some roms.

I can't imagine wanted to downgrade to Froyo from honeycomb. Everytime I start to get disappointed there is no custom ROM I can't think of why I would want one yet. The Xoom is fast, responsive, and other than the SD card, works great. Built-in host mode support would also be nice.

That is what I mean by wait on the source code of honey comb to be released then they can make roms based off it.

What are you looking for in a ROM? I've only had an android phone for a few days (thunderbolt) but most of the ROMs I see don't really apply to the XOOM. The features seem to be things like:
-debloating
-removing or updating UI layers like sense
-porting stuff from other phones
-custom kernels (already avail. on xoom)
There are certainly some things that can be done without HC source
A custom ROM would be nice that included all the following without having to jump through a bunch of hoops:
Rooted
SD Card Support
USB Host Mode

Something similar to Bugless Beast or Cyanogen. The things you mention are usually part of or included in ROM's.

I do believe one-click root does most of if not all of what you mentioned.

Again, in the development forum, I have only used the Tiamat ROMs but I'm sure others are good. Tiamat (now Team Eos) seem to be the main dev team for the Xoom so I stick with their releases but feel free to play... that's what it's all about after all

Team Tiamat is the only Xoom rom developer for Honeycomb OS, but Tiamat and Team Rogue also have developed several good custom kernels.
If you take your time and pay attention, you can flash as many roms or kernels and other mods as you like.
Just keep in mind that you will have to perform a data wipe/factory reset each time you change your rom, unless you are explicitly told that it's not needed.

I've only ever used Tiamat ROMs on my Xoom. IMHO the others were just glorified themes. I consider the current EOS nightlies to be my daily driver now. Its just so much faster than honeycomb. On a side note, I just got a Galaxy Nexus and the development forums for it are 10 times more active than the Xoom forums ever were. As both are Google Experience Devices, I had expected the development on the Xoom to be more diverse and robust, but unfortunately its not. At the end of the day, its no BFD. My Xoom does everything I could ask for with the likes of BRD and Solarnz here at XDA.

For what its worth, I'm just over 2 days on a single charge with the ICS nightlies.
Roms
EOS wingray is the best one ive found. Ive been running it for several weeks now. very stable.

I see so many threads about rooting while on jellybean. What do i need to do to root on ics? The plan is to root and then use a custom jb rom. Thanks for your help.
Any help with my n00b post would be great.
Look for the debugfs method in the Dev section. That works on ICS but not jb as loopholes are closed on jb.

You can't use a JB rom custom or stock while you have ICS bootloader and updating to JB may remove root ( mine didn't ) and will certainly remove a custom recovery ( CWM or Twrp ). You have to unlock to install custom rom or recovery so if you are sure you wish JB custom rom why not update to JB and start from there?
Unlock, custom recovery for JB ( Twrp is my choice ), custom rom flashed with Twrp. I have not flashed any custom roms for the TF300 that weren't already rooted.
Good Luck!:good:
Yep, I am probably going to just go ahead and upgrade. I thought when I read that there was an advantage to being on ICS (for custom ROM purposes) but it doesn't seem to be the case. So I will get fully updated and then go from there.
Thanks!

The possible advantages are NVFlash, cm9, cm10, etc. At this time no CM, AOSP, AOKP, Paranoid Android, and so on for the JB bootloader. Everything ( rom ) is based on the stock kernel. It is being worked on but not ready for release yet. The dreaded i/o issue on JB and probably others.
If I were in your shoes I'd stay on ICS for now and wait a while for things to sort out. On ICS I'd run CM10 or Hydro for ICS. Those are just my feelings.
Take your time and look around a bit more if you have any doubts.
If you are ready then by all means go for it!
:good:Good Luck!
Thanks for all your help. I did go ahead and make the jump to JB. Currently on CleanROM but have no idea which of the "big 3" I should run. I suppose I will have to try them all and see. Wish there was a good pro/con list of each ROM that I could reference.

The biggest con of running JB is that Adobe has removed support for flash from JB in anticipation of forcing everyone to go use HTML5. You also cannot use the NVFlash method of backing up some crucial files as a safety net (the developers claim that using NVFlash makes your device brickproof).
I am still waiting for the kinks in JB to be worked out before I switch. I'm on ICS bootloader still and I can run a JB custom ROM (Baked Blackbean) just fine, so I can have my cake and eat it too. I can try out the JB changes without making a full commitment.
Just my two cents.
Hi,
I am using EOS3 rom (4.1.1) on my TF101 now.
Looking for a newer rom (preferably 4.1.2) with 3G usb modem support.
Can I get some suggestions ?
Also, I'd like to test 3G modem support on the current rom if possible before changing rom. How can I test that ?
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
try ppp widget from play store
I am not looking for a widget, but a rom.

no rom has the support
really ?
I've heard that at least 4.0 roms have it, and with a correct kernel, 4.1 roms may have it.
is that wrong ?
Part of the issue is that the TF101G never made it beyond 4.0, so native support may never get there until the TF101G gets 4.1.X.
But, I guess I don't understand the issue with using pppwidget to get 3G functionality with a ROM vs having it baked into the ROM.
I have no problem with using pppwidget. It's ok; I already tried it on my current rom.
The thing is, I am also looking for a new rom. So just suggest me a new rom and I'll use it with pppwidget.
Also, I believe, there should be ROMs that support 3G because on several Android tablets (like Ainol), I see the 3G connectivity settings to use with a 3G modem.
So it shouldn't be hard to integrate if it's not already included in CM10 ?

the last rom to have support was megatron ICS. None since then. no combination of kernel or whatever can make it work past ics unless the devs specifically work on it.
thank you. that's clear now.

For example sending and receiving SMS is not working with pppwidget. It is with 3g in Rom (like Megatron).
Also 3g watchdog not reconizing 3G traffic with pppwidget as 3g.
My question is exactly what the title is. I'm a new user with this device but not new to rooting etc. I rooted it with the method that involved burning the ISO to CD and having PC run it at boot. I tried a CM7 ROM from another website, I believe it was the Steel Droid CM7.2.0. The ROM was very nice BUT the WiFi would not connect at all even after multiple wipes and re-flashing.
I will not use this device for a cellphone but just for common PDA features. Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated

I found that there was a VERY stable CM7 rom that I loved for the Droid 2 Global, but so far my wife has really liked the most-current build (for this phone at least) of CM9, which you can find on the rootzwiki forum for CM9, just search for "New build for D2G" it's post 1522 on page 153 (the last page of the thread). I'm sorry, I can't post links on this forum yet it seems.
WiFi is solid, everything is snappy and battery life seems much better now that I've managed the HWA settings as described in the post. And then at least you won't be limited to GB apps anymore
Thanks for the reply, since I posted that I found I think that same ROM which was updated last month. It is the LiquidICS v1.6 and it sure is smooth.
Edit: I quickly found out that the physical keyboard would not light up with that ROM and the "b" button was functionless. I now am trying a barebones cm7 ROM but might check out the other ICS ROM
