I tried searching, but the search is down?
I have spent several hours looking.
I used odin (phone went into download mode without issue) to put my phone back to stock so I could get the ota update.
Went back into download mode with Odin to install CWM, this "passed" and after a restart my phone went into samsung recovery, not CWM.
Now my phone will not go into download mode? I tried different cable, ports, etc.
any help?
so what is it doing since it's not going into download mode.
it wouldn't do anything, I finally reinstalled the drivers and after holding down the power and volume - let go... nothing! push the volume - twice and it went into download mode. Odin recognizes it and goes through the motion, but the phone has a AX_timeout in red at the top left corner of the screen?
Odin continues and say's passed, but when I try to reboot into CWM it hangs on the samsung logo.
It will not boot into recovery, but it will start the phone and everything seems to work.
im using odin 1.83 / windows 7 64bit.
Remove the battery, put the phone in download mode, put the battery back in, and flash CWM. Before you fully boot the OS, flash a custom kernel. If you don't flash a custom kernel, the default kernel will overwrite CWM with the default recovery.

I would try using odin v1.82... My experience with this tool has told me that our charge doesnt always "play nice" with other versions... Also try redownloading the latest CWM, you could of had a bad download.

If you happen to flash a ROM that doesn't include the script that the kernel calls for the overwrite, then you could have ended up with CWM on a stock kernel.

There's a script, can't remember where it's at, that is run at boot to replace the recovery. If that script is not there, it doesn't get replaced. All custom roms have it removed.

There is. You can download the Superuser CWM to your phone, flash CWM, boot immediately to CWM (don't let it boot normally), flash Superuser, and reboot.
At that point, if you desire, you can delete /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and reflash CWM if you want to keep it.

Are you talking about cwm(orange or red) or 3e recovery(blue & yellow). If your trying to get to recovery with cwm you need to Odin the modded kg4 kernel(yes it works with kh1). Until you do that then you will only get 3e recovery.
To get to recovery hold volume up and down and power till the first splash screen appears then release. Hope this helps you
***Edit***: you need to flash drhonks kernel. Sounds like somthing didnt take.

cwm - orange
and that's the thing, when i hold volume up & down with power key, it goes to the splash screen then it goes no where. if i let it go it stays in the first splash screen, if i keep holding it, it loops. the only way to get the phone started is to touch the home key after that first splash screen

I odined, a kd1 rom... I'm back to stock froyo, kinda....
Also, how do you flash .rar files using odin? Can you? I haven't found any .tar kg4 roms
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
extract the far, in there you will find some tars. The first one which is 290+ mbs, is the one that you put in the "PDA" section. The one that has "CSC" somewhere within the title is put in the CSC section, the one with "Phone" is put in it's corresponding section. the .pit file is put in the top left pit section. Make sure you have the samsung drivers. If you don't, you are A, either nothing is going to happen, or B, you will end up with a 600 dollar brick.
So flash up, Then flash the GB voodoo kernel.tar in the PDA section.
Then go to cwm, flash what you want to flash make sure it has the GB voodoo kernel in it as well, then go to the voodoo section of recovery, disable everything, then reboot. You will have recovery on GB

ok well this should do it:
1. power off phone and take out battery
2. open odin on your pc
3. hold volume down button and connect to pc, should show download mode and should show up in odin, let go of volume down
4. put battery back in, uncheck 'auto reboot' and put the CWM file in PDA
5. push start and let odin flash the file, should only take a few seconds
6. unplug phone from pc, then remove battery
7. put battery back in
8. hold volume up, home button and power button until you see 'Samsung' then let go of power button
that should get you into CWM and you can work from there, since you don't have a custom kernel to make CWM 'stick' on your phone do not let the phone boot up or you will need to odin CWM again... you basically get one try with it

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you just trying to get it into recovery? If so, do you have the Android software developer kit (SDK) installed? The SDK includes the adb binary. Download it, install it, then open a command prompt, cd to the 'platform-tools' directory where the SDK installed, insure your phone is on & plugged in via USB, and issues the command: adb reboot recovery.
If I'm off-base with what you're trying to accomplish, my apologies.

Don't use a KFx rom, the KF1 and KF2 versions of Gingerbread were really buggy and will give you more trouble than they're worth. You're better off flashing Octane, Valhalla or ICBINB which get updated frequently.

Which also means that you need to flash a KG4 leak or newer for the proper GB bootloaders. If not, you'll get a rainbow screen.
Similar Problem
Hey Guys,
I had a similar problem. I am using Fire Expert to overwrite the new recovery to the \system\bin folder. However, I realized my mistake was that I did not mount as r/w. After I did that though and I held the volume up, down and power, I stay stuck at the initial splash screen and can't go into the stock recovery screen. I can't boot regularly either; I have to Odin recover. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Overwriting the old recovery and putting the update.zip file on the sdcard for CWM Final was for Froyo ROMs only, not Gingerbread (GB) ones. What ROM are you currently on?
In order to get into recovery since flashing the GB boot loaders I have to:
Power off the phone
Hold down Volume Up, Volume Down, and the Power button
When the Galaxy S screen comes on, wait a second, it'll get a tad bit brighter. When that happens let go of only the Power button
Wait a few seconds and you should be in recovery
Sounds like you might be a bit goofed at this point, though. If you were on GB before I'd suggest using one of the ROMs in bhundven's The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection. The last one in the list will also give you root, CWM, and voodoo lagfix.

Weird. All you should have to do is put the updated recovery in /system/bin & put the update.zip on the root of the sdcard.
What is the current state of the phone? I know in the previous post you said you would have to use ODIN to recover. Did you do that?
Yes I did use Odin to recover. I did it following the link provided in the sgs4g 10 commandments. This is the second time I recovered. After I recovered he first time, I tried the process again and the same thing happened: stuck at the initial splash screen.

I've not used it but if it allows you to mount /system read/write, then it should work fine as long as you're putting the 'recovery' file in /system/bin & the update.zip on the root of the sdcard.
If you try it again then reboot into recovery, what happens?

It didn't brick his phone, for some reason the first time you flash cwm from rom manager, it hangs when it's about to ask for SU permissions, it force closes. Second time it will go through, doesn't brick your phone or anything of that nature.

I don't believe you can hard brick a phone from a recovery. You can always flash the stock recovery.img and be fine. on the white-lettered screen try and choose Bootloader. if you can get there you can flash either CWM or TWRP recovery, then flash a working system, or else do a full firmware flash with RSD Lite. or if he already flashed a custom recovery you could boot there and try flashing a working ROM.
Hes got cwm on here. And from what i can tell just rooted the stock rom. Ive never seen a device having a method to power on except maybe a semi tethered jailbroken iphone. Idk

Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
The device should turn on normally, unless he did something to put it in a bootloop. That's why i figured your basic option was to do a stock restore of some kind.
Check the dev. sections, but rooted stock is basically the only option at present. There are starts on CM9 and CM10 builds, but i don't think they do a whole lot besides boot up. There is a deodexed version of stock that you can flash, and at least apply some tweaks and such
Right on thanx man ill try it and see what happens.

Ok new topic. I think the dude i got the phone from unlocked the bootloader but didnt root it. He said it was rooted. But when i dl rom manager it said i wasnt. So i guess my question is how do i root the thing?
Sent from my XT897 using xda app-developers app
Ah ok, if the bootloader is unlocked, just flash either CWM or TWRP recovery thru Fastboot, then boot into recovery and flash SU.
Edit: after flashing recovery, make sure to boot straight into recovery by holding the volume up button while rebooting. If you boot into the system, it will probably overwrite your flash with stock recovery.
Hes already installed cwm. I cant use regular boot methods. When i reboot the phone it boots into recovery. Thats when i hold down all the buttons to bring up the boot options screen. So basically all i have to do is flash the su file? Btw I tried doing that along with flashing a kernel and cm9 it wouldnt boot into the rom.

I'm not sure how you're sending all these messages from a dead phone...
But regardless, CM9 doesn't really "work" per se. It boots, sure... but nothing else works.
You're going to have to flash one of the stock backups people posted around. I know there was a .win backup of everything - which you'll need TWRP to restore.
