[Q] Display email fully zoomed out on ICS email app - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi,
I've just moved from iPhone 4 to Galaxy SIII and loving it but one thing that really sucks is the stock email app (tried Samsung one but installed stock ICS email app).
I can handle the annoying "show pictures" every time I open an email (please tell me is there is a tweak to show pictures by default) but I can't handle how the email app zooms in on emails and you have to scroll around just to read the email. It's even more annoying you don't have the option to zoom out.
I've included two attachments to show you what i'm talking about. On the iPhone it automatically zooms out and shows the email on one page (so you only have to scroll up and down) and if you want you can zoom in. On the stock android app, it cuts the email in half and you have to scroll right and up and down. You don't have the option to zoom out.
So i want to know if there is a tweak to the email app that allows you to zoom out? Since developers have the apk, can't they modify the default zoom settings? I don't want to use another app, I like the stock apps. I also use multiple accounts (Gmail and Hotmail) so I only want to use one app.
I've searched the forums but could only find this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574566
they seem to be having the same problem but no fix.
Please let me know of alternative options as well.
Cheers

Picture for "me" in messaging app?

I'm trying to set up a friends Nexus S and there's one thing I just can't seem to figure out. In the messaging app, it shows the picture of the person I'm talking to alternating with what's supposed to be the picture of me. Instead I get the blank no photo thing and this seems to bug her. She would like to use her facebook photo if entirely possible, but ill just snap a picture of her with the camera if not.

If you set her up as a contact in the contacts app, and put in the phone's phone number as her number, I think it will just recognize whatever picture you assign to that contact for the messaging and all similar.
Wouldn't hurt to put her gmail/google account that she's registered the phone with (signed in with) as part of her personal contact information.
Funny, I was wondering the same thing! Being somewhat new to Android, I wasn't sure how to add my pic to my outgoing messages, so I added myself as a contact with my number and Gmail - and uploaded a pic from FB that I am using. Not sure if there's an easier way to go about this, but this solution worked for me!
Another option, though it doesn't use the stock messaging app, would be to using something like Handcent SMS which has an option for uploading your own image to use in messages.
The advantage of the setting-yourself-up-as-a-contact approach is that most apps, certainly the Google apps (Google Voice, GTalk, etc) and the Messaging app all look for that and will use it if it's there. You don't have to pic and choose a pic for every app individually.

Go to settings > about phone > status > My phone number
that field should contain your personal phone number. If it does not, android does not have a fix for this. You can however plug you sim card into a old phone or an iphone and then alter this value.

But that won't put a picture of her into apps until he gets a picture setup someplace, right?

[Q] Gmail without the preview pane?

Pardon if this is a stupid question, but this is my first foray into Honeycomb territory. Is there a way to get the old-fashioned, Gingerbread style Gmail app on the 7.0+?
One of the things I liked most about using the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet was the Gmail app. On a phone, the Gmail app is good but there's only so much text you can see at once at a decent size. But on a 7" tablet, suddenly everything is quite roomy, and I can use a larger font size AND see more than twice as much. It makes for a relaxing read, with the comfort of a piece of paper. No cramming.
Imagine my dismay when I launch Gmail on the 7.0+ and find that the extra space has been used for panes. I now get a list of labels, something almost worthless to me, taking 1/3rd of the screen in portrait, and forcing all the subject lines to be squished and truncated. In landscape, it's not as bad, but I often have to scroll left-right on HTML emails, and then there's lots of scroll scroll scroll. It's much harder to get a good picture of my inbox when I can only see 6 messages at a time instead of 15.
So.. does anyone know how to turn off the preview panes in the Honeycomb Gmail? Or get the Gingerbread gmail working on the 7.0+? I tried installing the Gmail apk pulled from my Kindle, but it just FCs. I'm guessing due to framework differences. Ideas?
I would very much appreciate knowing how to do this as well.
This one issue (Gmail being heavily used) is enough to make me seriously consider going back to the Kindle Fire. argghh!
I looked, doesnt seem possible. If it was me, id use a different client that specifically supports gmail, or the web (i dont think the web supports push however)
Thanks for looking otamtech. I wonder if the ICS Gmail is configurable, since it's supposed to be for both phones and tabs, and obviously panes on phones would be completely out of the question. I could probably manage to get by if I knew there was light at the end of the tunnel.
I haven't seen any other email client which handles threading nearly as well as Gmail, though I'm most familiar with K-9 Mail. K-9 Mail does do a good job with push notifications. Suggestions?

I use k9 also, just because it doesnt thread like gmail -lol. I HATE the way gmail threads its "conversations". i guess its because I am old-school, and havent had the patience for the learning curve. My job transitioned to gmail, and the only way its bearable to me is because i use the gapps outlook connector.

Hey, i was looking at the stock email app and you can move that preview pane away and get your screen realestate back. Hope that helps.
Yeah, I saw the stock email app lets you move it (though it pops back out every time you come back to the app..), but it's pretty crappy compared to K-9, so might as well use K-9 in that case.
I actually don't like threading for my personal email, but for my work email I find it extremely valuable, since some threads end up 20 messages long. Also, LOVE 'mute' function, which makes it so any thread muted won't reappear in your inbox unless your name specifically is added to the recipients list. Great for all those 'congrats!!!' time email threads that endlessly have new pointless messages.
Doesn't seem possible at first glance to use the old Gmail either since it seems to depend on the old libs.
Tried out the ICS Gmail leaked here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376958 ), don't know if it's the latest version. The left pane is slightly less wide due to it using a smaller font. The right pane uses the smaller font too, so more readable text, but the subject is REALLY deemphasized, to the point of just looking like message text, with the participants being featured larger.
The weird thing though.. open messages that are already local on the device (as in, I just closed them), and you get 1) spinning clock briefly 2) the message slowly fades in (animation). Both of which make opening messages slower. The completely pointless fade-in animation wastes a half second alone. I tried turning window animations off and it had no effect.
WTF is Google thinking? The Gingerbread Gmail has no such delays. Tap and bam, it's open. No loading, no fade-in.
Don't know if the 'final' ICS Gmail (since it's out now) improves on this. Don't have a copy to try.
Finally went back to the familiar K-9. I use it on my phone as well. Still works the best for me.
Doesn't the stock Email client just hide the preview panel when a email is opened in landscape?
Just wonering, what's the benefit of switching to K9? I tried that long time ago but reverted back to samsung Email client on my SGS1.
amtrakcn, stock email client can hide the pane, but isn't nearly as configurable as K-9 Mail, especially for something like Gmail where you need to bind certain actions to unusual behaviors to make everything work straight. It's too bad the Gmail app doesn't just let you slide the pane away like the stock email app does. wtf Google?
(not to mention in ICS switching from menus with largest touch targets and descriptive labels, to permanent wasted screen space with menu bars full of tiny icons that have no description).

Not sure about the unusual behaviors. I'm pretty happy with the Samsung Email client and configured all my gmail account with exchange.
Also you may want to try Kaiten mail by K9 dogwalkers, I think it's K9 for tablets.
I do agree with the las part. I think Google is just so bad at UI design. They just implement fancy pics and animations, ignore how unintuitive the UI has become.

[Q] People app and dialer contacts

Hello everyone,
Really loving ICS but have a small question(actually two): why did they choose to use the people app as the "default contacts" instead of the one that comes with the dialer?
To me it seems like it was a last minute decision, hence the people app does not go with the general color scheme.
If someone more knowledgeable could shed some light onto the problem I would greatly appreciate it.
Oh and is there a way to create a dialer contacts shortcut to use in stead of the people app?
Anyone????
I believe the dialer just uses an api from the people app. The people app is able to show google+ and twitter updates along with the contacts also it gives you the option wo display/hide contacts from several accounts (google, google+, twitter, last.fm, ...). I think they gave it a brighter look to highlight it more as a standalone app which can be updated without touching the core system.

[Q] Can no longer zoom out on HTML emails in ICS ROM?

I use the stock email app for personal email and Touchdown for work email, both of which open HTML emails slightly zoomed in, but I could always zoom out completely to view the entire email full screen on all my phones including the SR while running GB. Now on the leaked ICS, zooming out in the stock email app is limited to about 75% and it's completely disabled in Touchdown, so now I have no way to view full screen HTML emails, I have to pan around to find what I want to see.
Anyone else seeing this? Is it a setting I'm missing? I'm running ICS Smooth 2.0 so I'm curious to see if everyone has the same issue on ICS or is it just this ROM and it's specific mods.
Yup, doesn't work for me anymore either. Not only that but I can't zoom out in Bonjour Madame, which is a real pain in the ass

Now that we have RC2 we can file this as a bug. Anyone else have experience with other phones running ICS that can zoom out in their email apps like the LG?
Any news about this? Would really like to know this. Thanks
just to add some information on the subject: the android default email client NOW is able to zoom out until the message will fit on the screen, and not any further. to do that ou have to go to Settings, General Settins, Automatic Adjust Messages. this will make the emails to open with the content adjusted by it's width. then you can zoom-in freely and zoom-out until the starting zoom position. It seems that ICS does not let we zoom out any further than the starting zoom level. If other email clients could open the messages with the "zoomed-out" view this issue would be solved.
to make things clear: this zoom feature was added on december 05, 2012: http://www.themobileindian.com/news/9551_New-Gmail-app-for-ICS-arrives-with-pinch-to-zoom-feature

Lollipop email app really this bad?

Hey all!
Just got my Galaxy S6 yesterday and not sure if I am not just used to the changes in lollipop or if the changes are really that bad!
What happened to the organization of the old email app?
This may be the wrong thread and if so, please point me in the right direction.
I get a lot of spam at work, and sometimes it is easier to click on the date ticker, which selects all of the emails for that day and I can mark them as read or delete them.
Now it is just one huge stream of emails with no way to pick multiple emails at once to delete or mark as read.
Am I just missing something?
Is there anyway to select multiple emails or do I really have to go through each email individually?
And , if this functionality is not available, can anyone recommend a good email app where I can select multiple emails at once, particularly by date? Otherwise the app is pretty much useless to me.
I have an out of the box Sprint Samsung Galaxy s6 that is unrooted.
Thanks all
Mikeinstlouis
Been using the Gmail app for my Google and external accounts. No issues whatsoever. Stopped using the Galaxy email app built in since the S5 version started acting funky with read mails randomly becoming unread.

Gmail app looks too clunky and doesn't allow me to pick multiple emails with one click..
I use Kaiten.
I tried gmail briefly after I got my S6 but it's awful by comparison. I don't know how people use such a limited app for email.

It definitely does. You press and hold one mail and the colours kind of go grayish. Then go tapping on multiple mails to select them. From here you can perform various actions like mark as read, delete etc.

That is not the what I am looking for. With the KitKat stock email, you can pick the date...say Weds April 22. You click the box next to that date and every email on that date is selected. You are suggesting that I click each indvidual email which is exaclty what I don't want to do.
Any other suggestions?
Kaiten does not have that either.
That's an interesting filter/option. Not something I've needed before.
Have you tried some of the top rated email apps in play store?

Mike, I use the email exactly as you do. I'd click on a day and the app would check all of the emails . I'd then uncheck the ones I wanted to keep our read and then hit delete. This was magic. I'm lookin at all email apps. Have you found anything yet?

You can activate the select/multi-select option by holding your fingertip on the date bar. The selection boxes will slide in on the left side of the screen.

Hi. All. I need also for the stock Samsung Galaxy S6 the button to select/mark All mail at one time.
In HTC Sense i didn't get this problem.
I was wondering if anyone found a solution yet. I am in same situation...nice new phone but painful to go through emails. I used to select all from he date...same as OP ..then just uncheck the five or so I wanted to keep. Now I have to check 80 boxes. Any new info would be appreciated.

Been using K9 email for a long time...never have a problem
might help
I know this is not what you were looking for but it might help someone looking for this...
to delete all emails you can long press on one email, until it is highlighted grey (or tick the box (to enable this box you can press the 3 dots and go to settings of that email and it is in there to enable tick box))
once you have one email highlighted, the top bar will turn orange and show the number of emails selected and the trash can etc...
if you tap on the number of emails selected (one at this point) there will be a drop down to say 'select all'...
I know it is not what OP wanted but I ended up here looking for this info so maybe someone else will too...
