Few questions regarting HBOOT and Radio - HTC Desire S

Hi,
i have the Desire S and rootet it via the Revolutionary Method. For that, i hat to downgrade my HBOOT. I have used that quite a while now first with Cyanogen, now with BlindICE. But all time, i have issues with GPS and Mobile Connection. A friend told me to update my HBOOT and Radio, then the problems will vanish.
is that true? What HBOOT and Radio should i flash and how risky is it? I know i can brick my phone whilst flashing a new Radio. But does it happen often if you compare MD5 sums and exactly do what the instruction tells you?
And then i have another question: What is HBOOT and Radio for?
Greetz Nidhoegger

HBOOT is the bootloader. Radio is what gives you signal, controls your Bluetooth, WiFi, etc.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2

Changing HBOOT has no effect on GPS signal
Changing RADIO has low effect on GPS signal, there is no better radio version, just try some and choose http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178001
But THIS has strong effect on GPS signal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032

Do u experience bad mobile reception everywhere or just some specific place(s)?
Ya the AGPS Patch by crypted really does help a lot. Took more than 5 min to get connect via gps but with that patch it's just a matter of seconds.

Flashing a Radio is always risky.
Please read the forums & all related posts before attempting a Radio Flash.
However, there shouldn't be any issues if the steps are followed correctly.
Please Note : Flashing a Radio will also reset your phone Data to Factory settings.
Perform a nandroid backup of your ROM before flashing.

Geez, not again... Where do people take this from?!
Radio controls BASEBAND ONLY. Not related whatsoever to Bluetooth, WiFi, or any other transmitting/receiving devices in the phone besides baseband. Devices that had radio somehow connected to the system were Nexus One and maybe the original Desire, in which radio was part of the communication with camera (switching from Froyo to Gingerbread without flashing the proper radio messed up the camera). Bluetooth, WiFi, etc are controlled by KERNEL.

Flashed different radio - Lost HSUPA - can't get it back [FIXED]

i am at a total loss here.
I was on CM7 with the stock AT&T radio and HSUPA was working just fine.
I then tried to flash another radio (The Telus one) and i lost HSUPA.
I checked the build.prop and it is still showing that HSUPA is enabled.
I tried flashing back to the AT&T stock radio and HSUPA is STILL disabled...
Anyone know how to re-enable this?
I am completely puzzled here.
edit: this is fixed. see solution HERE

Try flashing a different rom and see if that will work. I would try stock rooted.
Thanks but there has to be another way.
I font understand why flashing a radio (Telus, i even tried a euro radio), would disabled HSUPA from nowhere and the radio is completely ignoring the build.prop file which has HSUPA enabled.
By searching i saw another user had this problem but no solution was posted.
I had to ruu to stock and rerun the hack kit.

THIS!!!!
I had to do the same. I searched and tried everything. I am afraid the only way is to reflash to stock and start all over again. And don't flash any other radios. I have read so many radio threads looking for the solution and most everybody I see worldwide is getting the best results with the stock AT&T radio.

I guess that's what i'll have to do.
Is there a specific way i need to flash the radio in order no to lose HSUPA?
I simply used fastboot.
I do see other people on this forum who successfully flashed a different radio.
How did they do it?
There is no better radio for the inspire than the stock one. It has no hsupa limitations built in or nonspecific kernel issues, unlike the captivate. Don't flash any other radios, simple solution.

Is there a way to check which radio we have? What is the identifier of stock radio?
Not sure exactly what happens but something gets screwed up somewhere.
Originally I used the Hackerize kit and flashed the original radio. Instead of flashing a Sense rom, I went straight to CM7. Everything was perfect except I did not have HSUPA no matter what I tried. I tried multiple radios and editing build.prop. Nothing worked.
This second time, I used Hackerize again. This time I took the extra steps to flash one of attn1s cooked roms. I booted that and made sure I had HSUPA before moving forward. Then I installed CM7 again and now I have HSUPA. My uploads are faster than my downloads in my area.
OK here is the deal:
1) I RUU back to stock
2) Ran the hack kit again except for the last step i never flashed back to the at&t radio as this is what is causing the problem.
3) I then tested by flashing like 4 different radios (NONE FROM AT&T) and never lost HSUPA again.i flashed 3 euro radio and 1 from Telus both on euro stock firmware and CM7.
There is something with the at&t radio that once you flash it - something gets messed up when you flash another radio.

I've flashed the stock radio and the M2 radio back and forth and back. I've never had problems with HSUPA. I just did a speedtest to make sure because I'm back on stock radio and it is 1542down/1347up.
The stock radio sounds HORRIBLE... there isnt a better way to increase call quality???? Everything sounds so raspy.

Is the audio quality in the radio? I thought it was in the rom. I would have guessed reception quality would be in the radio. Related but not the same

Before you flashed back to stock, did you flash the radio back to the stck ATT radio or when I flash back to the stock ruu, it changes the radio back to the ATT radio?

Thanks man! This solves my problem, the only thing is all I did was open the hacker tools and pull out the down graded radio.img and flash it then let it reboot fully then just flash whatever radio to want and you get hsupa again on the modem if your choice. Hope this helps someone.

When you guys get HSUPA back, how do you know? Are you checking Menu>Settings>About Phone>Network>Mobile network type?
I've tried everything but this to get HSUPA and I can never get HSUPA to show as the network type. I'm nervous about flashing a new radio because it sounds like I need Eng S-Off to flash a radio and it seems there is a greater risk of bricking my phone if I screw it up than just with the radio s-off.

How I know if I have it or not is when I run a speed test, if my average upload speeds in 3G or "H" are less than 1 mb/s, I do this by using the speedtest.net app.

[Q] Low signals with Sense 3.5 Roms...

I am having Serious Low signals with Sense 3.5 Roms... It's better with Sense 3.0..
I have tested almost all Roms of this Sensation Forum and my observation is the same ...
What's the reason?...
My Radio was the same latest 10.58 in all Roms i tried... Tried matching RIL but didn't work in Sense 3.5 Roms...
Any suggestions? Should i downgrade radio?

Hi,
The best radio its the one that works.
Never mind all the suggestions that say you must have this or that radio with this or that ROM.
The one that actually works with your phone in your area is the best one for you.
It is a good thing that you have tried all different roms.
Now try the different radios, and stick with the one that works.
Nothing happens downgrading Radios?
The method of copying to Sdcard Root directory and checking md5 before flashing is safe?

Hi,
If you downgrade your radio, and you get better signals, then, there is no problem.
I prefer to use the adb method.
I hear of fewer problems with adb.
The sd card root method, however, is easier to install.
The choice is yours.
i know the build.prop file contains settings for the network, i also had the same problem and check the build.prop and it said i was using the 10.58 ril and i didn't realize but when you flash the ril file in recovery that the system has to be mounted.

Pardon... I didn't get what u meant... You shared same problem as mine so i would request you to repeat what you said in more simple way which is easy to understand..
I would be curious to hear which radio is best for keeping the data connection as fast and responsive as possible when we have less than a full rack of bars.
I have T-Mobile USA and had some issues with the 10.58 Radio. I downgraded back to the stock 10.56 Radio and it seems to be a lot better - I am running the 4.1.8 ARHD with Sense 3.5.
Download the Radio 10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01 and install via ADB
- adb reboot bootloader
- fastboot flash radio radio.img
- fastboot reboot
Then download the RIL HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ and flash via recovery.
Hopefully this works for you as well as it did for me!

What sort of issues did you have with the 10.58 radio?
@ jjdoctor, if your using a custom rom some roms are set up for EU..ect check the build.prop which is under system/build.prop (must be root) there are settings that are related to the network. take a build.prop from a stock rom and compare, also remember when you flash the ril in recovery you must mount the system first then flash the ril file. then flash your radio. there is no specific radio for a rom, dev's just say that cause they have a certain ril file install already for it. So just pick the radio that was from your stock ruu, which you can extract, get the ril file that is related to that radio, boot into recovery, mount the system, flash the ril, reboot into bootloader flash your radio and you should be set.

For me, I seemed to have a dropped signal, poor reception (on phone calls sounded like people were far away), signal would go in and out constantly - quickly would refresh but when you are a heavy user and signal goes in and out and interrupts what youre doing its very frustrating haha. Also, data speeds weren't as great. I am thinking of doing a speedtest result with 10.56 and 10.58 for everyone - but I really think it'd just apply to where I am (Colorado/New Mexico).

[Q] Desire S loosing signal

Hi all,
A week ago I bought a brand new Desire S and installed latest CM 7.1 stable following the guide on cyanogemod Desire S Wiki using revolutionary 0.4pre4. Everything was smooth and nice, I flashed ROM and GAPPS and my phone is working absolutely perfectly... but there is one little problem...
I am using Desire to fetch my mails from 2 mailservers using IMAP every 30 mins. But when the phone is switching between network modes i.e. HSDPA -> EDGE or EDGE -> GSM or any other way, I am disconnected from operator network for about 10 seconds until the network mode changes and everything is fine after that, until there is another network mode switch.
This happens for me about 10 times a day, so my phone sometimes appears that It is turned off for people who want to call me. Immediately after connecting to network I get a missed call SMS from my operator.
Interesting thing is, that when I disable email fetching, disable background data transfer and disable network data, the phone works fine without "blackouts".
Can someone help me with this problem? Maybe a radio issue?
Some more info:
ROM: Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 Desire S
Recovery: Revolutionary CWM v4.0.1.4
HBOOT: 6.98.1002
Kernel: 2.6.35.14-cyanogenmod+ [email protected] #1
Radio: 20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M
There is a newer radio-file online.
Maybe it's solving your problem.
I'm using MIUI and never had such problems, but i'm interested in flashing CM, so please report if the problem is gone by flashing newer radio!
Which radio version are you using?
Today I am testing 2G only switch so I am on EDGE data only.
Flashing radios is safe......, but a bad radio flash will instantly brick your phone.
You are using 1.47.401.4 radio, try updating to the 2.10.401.5 one.
Thanks for reply.
Shoud I flash something else with the radio?
I have 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04 downloaded from cmw.22aaf3.com
Another I have is ftom OTA update zip file OTA_Saga_S_HTC_Europe_2.10.401.8-1.47.401.4_release_225210fmxlt12djw1sr7y5.zip where is one radio.img in formware.zip file too - version unknown
So Which one to flash?
and if so, which method should I use to flash radio? The Android SDK one or the ZIP + Bootloader one?

Strangely I had the same issues as you on Endymion.
Then I updated radio to the latest.

Then I went to CM7. It was fine for a while, but now I'm losing signal with no 3G bars and its not switching automatically to 2G like it should when It has no 3G signal!
EDIT:

yes, in my area there is 3g, when I turn off 2g only switch there is a problem described in my first post, so i am on 2g for now just to keep phone connected to network.
main problem is when i am driving and the phone is switching network modes.

i already had the problem for several times, and i also pulled out the battery (you shouldn't do that)!
only had to boot into bootloader, start recovery, wipe all partitions, flash rom and was having fun again with my device
this thread could help you, if really stuck on HTC logo
For your real problem on loosing the signal, did you ever tried out using actual stock rom, or another custom one like MIUI?
i used MIUI from 2010-08 till yesterday, now trying out CM7.1 for some days
I have the same or a very similar problem. I have the stock rom.
I already had 3 different desire s motherboard's and 2 different display's.
The first Desire S i had, with android 2.3.3, had a excellent signal. Due some problems i had, the phone bricked and had to go to HTC to repair.
HTC replaced the motherboard and update the version of the android to 2.3.5 and ever since the signal caption, the signal switch was working very bad.
The phone went to a second repair because of this, new phone, and again with android 2.3.5. The problems persisted.
I also tested with different SIM cards, from different mobile operators.
So, my conclusion is either android 2.3.5 or this new versions of Desire S have problems with signal caption and signal switch.
So as you, i need some help with this issue!

Hi All,
I have a similar problem with the latest CM7.1 nightly builds (Reaper, jorgen2009). I never saw this with older CM7.1 versions, e.g. Nexx version, ICS, MIUI oder Endymion.
I have WLAN on and leave my house. Phone switches to 2G/3G..., so far so good. When I return home, The WLan sign in the status bar appears again, everything seems to be fine, but I have no connection. I get no data via WLan until I swicth WLan off and on again.
Radio is the latest from 2.10.401.5.
Best Regards
Wrapp
Had similar problems, upgrading to the latest radio helped. I got stuck on the HTC screen and I went through flashing RUU's and unlocking bootloaders back and forth... when the only thing that needs to be done is to wipe the cache.
Learned a lot about bootloaders though. But my warranty got void because i did the htcdev unlock... (Sorry for OT)

My phone isn't receiving any data. Can anyone help?

Last Friday and Saturday I began having some serious issues with my phone. The SIM Card would randomly disconnect and reconnect and my phone would randomly restart. Starting yesterday, this issue no longer occurs, but I am unable to get any data on my phone. WiFi works perfectly, but 2g, 3g, and 4g never connect. The 3g icon will appear for a brief moment and then disappear again.
I'm currectly running the most recent stable release of Cyanogenmod 9, if that matters. I also think this could be a hardware issue, so if I have to send my phone in should I try to go back to stock firmware?
Thank you in advance!
Have you tried a different radio and ril combo? I lost data once and I looked in the generic ICS radio and ril files. I upgraded to newest radio and ril and I was up and running again and never had a problem with it since. You flash the ril like a Rom and the radio like a pg58img file. Best place to start would be just the generic ICS radio and ril files. There is about 7 I believe give or take. You can try it out and see if that helps you out . It fixed my problem completely and I had NO data at all. Best wishes, it won't hurt to try. Test out a few and see what works best for your area. Hope this helps!

If not, you cannot flash any firmware or radio.
And yes, flashing a bad radio can brick your phone.
If you do flash one, make sure to check the md5 checksum first.

Wifi issues

Hello all,
I've a problem with wifi in my Desire S and actually I don't know if it's software or hardware related. The problem:
Wifi switch is On, but no network scans at all, sometimes networks appear, but just for two, three seconds, and then no networks again. The process is: I turn wifi switch on, messages of: Turning wifi on, scanning..., on, disconnected, no networks available.
Wifi hotspot don't work either. Everything else is working perfectly

Might be a rom problem, go ask the dev of the rom that you are using. Check the "bugs" list.
If problem persists, i suggest to ruu. Properly. If it is still doesnt work, then its a hardware problem.

Thanks, then it's probably a hardware problem, because I tried RUU and different roms.
If you're on latest fallout version you should use the fallout kernel that comes with the ROM.
I'm on a very similar setup and have no issues, not that that helps you.
To completely rule out the ROM then I'd suggest
take a backup
Full wipe
Install different stock based ROM and associated kernel
Re test

could it not be a radio problem? when I had that radio I got a big battery drain. Not that that is the same as your symptoms, but it might show that this radio does not seem to work very well for every device or setup. Maybe try ur old radio just to rule it out?
