Is my Sensation killing batteries? - HTC Sensation

Since getting my Sensation I've never been happy with the battery life.
Been running custom ROMs from Day 1, tried various ROMs and various Kernels and have the same issues.
The issues have been
1) Periods of instability and reboots followed by long periods of stability
2) Poor battery life
3) Phone turning off/dying when using the camera flash in low light
Especially because of the camera flash issue I thought the stock battery had gone bad and wasn't able to provide enough power, so I bought an Anker 1900mAh battery.
This seemed to solve all the issues. Battery life went up to over 24 hours. No camera flash issues and a much more stable and usable phone. I was very happy.
That lasted for a few months and now I'm getting back to where I was with my original battery, poor battery life, more instability and camera flash issues but with the Anker battery.
Has anyone seen anything similar?
I really feel like getting rid of my Sensation even though I love the phone, these issues make it painful to use.
Currently running Faux123 v007 kernel with ARHD 6.6.7.

Wow never heard such of an issue you might have an faulty sensation?

I agree with above post. My anker battery is still going strong after almost a year ! Check your settings and see if something is giving you such a extensive battery drain. Also check your applications carefully. Make sure your sync is not syncing every couple of minutes too, this can really strain a battery. In fact I turn off most sync and only sync email and make sure that's not syncing every minute. Turn off .notification led lights and feedback vibration too. These things drain the battery fast. Make sure in keyboard the vibration is also disabled during typing. I completely disabled led notifications It's waste of battery in my
Opnion. Carefully check All these little things that can pull off your battery. Also disable automatic screen brightness and turn way down to the lowest you can tolerate. All these little things will help save your battery. See if this helps. Remember to check application settings as well. Hope this helps out. If you cannot find .Anything draining it and you have done these things try another new battery. If that continues to drain consider warentee exchange. Best of luck.

Also make sure your
Battery is not loose this could.cause the issues. Check contacts. If you can wiggle the battery it could be loose. You can fox this with. Little paper wedge. This could be the problem. Best of luck

Yeah i heard of this one too sometimes in some sensations the anker doesnt fit well and it doesnt go right into the +/- contacts you might want to fill in the gap if there is one...

Put a piece of paper on the opposite site of the battery contacts do that the contacts are pushed harder to the phone and clean them before. This resolved the same issues on my sensation.

ant_thomas, I've experienced the same issues with ARHD 6.6.7 specifically. Battery readings would be wildly inaccurate, sometimes saying that it has 40% left, shutting off and refusing to turn back on completely, leaving me to go into recovery to find that the battery is at 2% actually (might be that battery calibration script). It would also turn off if i used flash about half the time i did use camera flash about half the time. To me, ARHD would be a good rom if it actually read my battery correctly, and didn't give me a functionally half-broken camera.
I'm kind of new to the Sensation, but I've been rom hopping for a few weeks, and I think that's enough to give my amateur opinion. If you're into stock-look, I would recommend Elegancia's stock 3.6 sense rom, Blitz 1.0 (I just upgraded from 3.1.1), or HyperNonSense if you're into AOSP (sense-based, but really lightweight in comparison to VirtuousInquisition). I've had decent enough battery life in comparison to Sense 4 roms or AOSP/AOKP/CM9. But then again, different strokes for different b̶l̶o̶k̶e̶s̶ phones. I can't guarantee anything, as your phone might have the off chance that it's suffering the same symptoms for different reasons, but I hope at least I've helped. Good luck with your phone!
TL;DR: Ditch ARHD - battery read broken, camera flash broken. Elegancia Blitz hasn't betrayed me yet, maybe it won't betray you either. (HyperNonSense by SpIder if you dig AOSP)

Thanks for the replies so far, very much appreciated.
Whilst the battery didn't feel loose at all I have managed to fit in a piece of paper to ensure that it's definitely fitted completely tight.
I am also going to try another ROM or two (definitely going to try Elegancia Blitz) and I'll be very specific about what apps I reinstall after.
I do have some syncing of various services on but I had turned them off in the past and it made no difference, so I thought I may as well have them on.

Invalid stats are HTC's fault, not ARHD's. Sensation simply has broken battery readings.
Sometimes battery dies when it's on 20%, because it was actually on 1%. Reflashing the ROM fixes this. I'm guessing wiping battery stats would help as well.
Anyway, in addition to that piece of paper, I suggest you install Watchdog lite. You can easily follow what is using your CPU, and if an app is "misbehaving" you will get notified

I was having the same issue a couple of months ago while we were still on gingerbread. I sent it for a warranty exchange and none of the issue were present. But a couple of weeks ago it started again with the new phone ,and its gotten worse the last couple of days. It reboots when I use flash sometimes, battery stats are all over the place after constant random reboots, battery takes over 5 hours to charge. It seems I'm not the only one with these problems. It's really annoying and has gotten to the point where the phone is unusable.most of the time.
I have tried many things and nothing works. I tried to get a logcat but these things never happen while the phone is connected, I tried to use alogrec to record it from the phone but won't save before it reboots. I've read many threads with these issues but never saw a true solution:/

It is really tempting just to sell up and get a Samsung Galaxy S3 even though I'm going to make a large loss on the Sensation since they're not going for all the much on ebay these days.

I have had about 8 warranty exchanges, all of them keep getting dust, dead pixels, shutdowns, etc. One of them died and didn't turn back on.
Those who defend HTC for their quality are perhaps blind? I do like the design and materials but design and build quality are two very different things.
I am looking forward to get rid of my Sensation at this point, for a Galaxy S3.
The Sensation is a good phone but too many hardware problems.

Same Issue
I have ARHD T-Mob 1.2 installed. I didn't have any issue with 1.1 but now I get weird battery readings, my phone restarting when I get a call and battery shows around 50-60%
One thing I noticed, it didn't do this until I played angrybirds but it may just be a coincidence.
I may try another rom. Anybody got it remedied by changing to a different rom?

Informal battery test

There are a lot of battery threads out there, but i wanted to try something new. I want to see how much our phones drain in real world situations. So here are the rules:
1. Use your phone normally for ten minutes.
2. Note your battery percent at the beginning and then at the end.
3. Post details about what you did, what ROM you're using, and the percent battery drain.
Hopefully we can compare our experiences and learn something.
I used my phone to surf a few websites, send one text, and use xda app. Started at 80% and ended at 77%. Using rcmix3d at 50% brightness.
I know there are tons of factors that affect battery drain, and I'm not trying to be scientific. I'm just curious how we all compare!

The only way you will get a decent idea is to test with others in your area as it will depend alot in signal strength. I would use more battery if I was bouncing between signals instead of having a steady connection.

Screen-on time is the only thing I ever look at. I've only managed to squeeze about 5h45m, out the sense-based gb ROM I've been using.
The phone does really well in standby on most if not all roms that have been flashed properly, don't have non-rom-related battery hogging app issues, and, as zelendel mentioned, signal issues.
It's this big fat screen that's obviously the biggest battery sucker.

I've gotten accustomed to putting my phone on the charger before bed as well. Mine pretty much will last the entire day... Off charger at ~8-9am, back on it at ~12am.
Averaging about 5 hrs screen on time with usually no voice calls of significant length, WiFi on, gps off, relatively stable signal.
I'm running Inspired Ace 1.0.1, and the 04.11_M2 radio. Seems I was getting a little better with the OTA radio, but signal fluctuated a lot more on that one, than with the 04.11_M2.
Edit: doesn't really use your testing procedure, just more of a general feeling, as there's so many other contributing factors...

Holly crap that's a heavy drain. I couldn't possibly use this phone with that type.of battery drain. Thanks to our great dews I managed a little over 7h screen on time. Could only accomplish that by reducing the screen brightness and UC to 768mhz. Stick speed and auto brightness I get about 6-6 1/2 screen on.

You probably got a bad flash, or have something else running, as I mentioned in your recent thread.
Did you full wipe prior to flashing?
Try out gingerbeast, if you still have battery issues with that, after properly wiping prior to flashing of course, then it's hardware, as that ROM has produced some record-breaking battery life performance.
Mine has twice decided to randomly have days where it just drains like crazy. The battery is a lot warmer and just dies out in like 6 hours with very minimal usage. the majority of the time my battery is great but the last 2 days and then about a month ago it did this. No reason for it either, I have made no changes on my device.
Anybody seen this?

Yeah I did a full wipe before flashing. I'll be sure and try that out tomorrow, I really hope it helps. If the issue is hardware, should I contact HTC? After I believe you said my phone should still be under warranty, I called them, and indeed it is. The rep I had before must have been new or something. Thanks
From a full charge, on TPGB with wifi, gps, and sync on, and everything refreshed 3-4hrs, I lasted about 8 hours. I was using super accurate gps for 20 minute intervals or so, but it lasted the day I'd say. Some occasional web browsing.
Lucky for me my head unit on my car has a usb port. For this whole trip I left it off though.

Battery Life?

I was wondering what kind of battery life everyone is getting. I am down to 35 percent and I have only been off the charger for 6 hours. I sent maybe 10 texts checked facebook twice and played cut the rope for 10 minutes.
I unlocked the phone using ACE hack kit and I am not running the CM nightly that I found here: http://iloveabath.co.uk/CM7-Unofficial/ plus the inspiremod 5.0 patch. Also I cant figure out how to get to fastboot to figure out what radio I am running. Im running on T-Mobile in the DC area. I just got the Inspire so any tips and tricks I might not know about would be great.
Thanks!
For starters HTC ace phones don't have the best battery life to begin with because of the sync functions. Cm7 is a great rom but it only adds to the battery issue.
There are serveral apps, flashes and mods to the boot.prop file thar will help extend battery life. Do some leg work and Use the search to find these. I suggest googleing calibrate battery and battery drain on htc inspire/dhd. This issue has been covered repeatedly. And the mods and users don't care for the clutter of repeat posts
Last suggestion. Use the notification bar to turn off functions when you don't use them. Ie.... wifi, Bluetooth, GPS and turn your screen brightness down.
Also unsync Facebook, Google + and drop your email retreave function down from every 15min to several hours or not at all. (You can still get email this way by opening app)
This is about all the advise I can give you the rest is up to you and doing some reading.
I did all of these and I get about 14 hours of heavy ussage.
As far as finding your radio. Download and open this app. http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=608910&d=1306506748

??? They have an Inspire, not an Ace.
Your battery definitely shouldn't be draining like that with that amount of use. Maybe try one of the current tracking apps to see what's using all your power.
Battery life depends largely on how you use it. Screen on uses about 80% of your battery. The more time it sits idle, the longer it goes on battery. I can get a whole day out of mine on a typical day with about 2 hours talking and a little fiddling with the phone. I also use wi-fi whenever possible because the wi-fi radio uses less power than the cellular data connection. If you're running dead after 6 hours I am willing to bet you are spending a lot of time using the phone. Try setting the brightness on the screen dimmer.

My biggest problem is that I want to use my phone without worrying about the
battery going dead, when I mean use my phone, I am talking about games, Internet,
and watching videos, stuff that requires the screen, the problem is that I cant use
the phone like that, at best with the screen on 100% of the time you might get 3 to 4
hours of battery life before the phone is dead, just using it as a phone the battery life
is enough, but if I just wanted a phone, I would have got something cheaper, there are a
few ways to deal with this, the same ways that I used when dealing with PDAs
in the past, -BTW PDAs had about the same battery life as this phone,- I had to
keep mutable chargers handy, one in my my car, one in the house, one in my travel
bag, and keep external battery packs to charge the PDA, I hate to do that, it seems
silly, even more so when the battery life is no better then way back in the early
2000s.
People have to start looking at today's smartphones as "pocket laptops". I've been saying this for a while. Battery size and capacity go hand in hand. You can't have a thin, light mini-computer and expect it to last for days on one charge like the old phones. There are many options to be sure you don't run out of power. Powerskin, seperate power pack, extra chargers for wherever you spend your time, extra batteries. There's not really any other way around it if you really use it a lot.
Battery life threads have been done to death. We all know the battery life is what it is. It will work for a real days worth of use for the average business user but for the kids playing games and watching movies well then it will only last a few hours.
Best advice is keep a charger handy

Why does my phone have excessive battery use?

Hi, I bought a sensation a couple of weeks ago, and have since then switched the rom a couple of times.
The problem I face is excessive battery use on my phone.
This seems to be regardless of the rom I am on as it seems to drop at a constant one to two percent a minute on any rom.
I have calibrated my battery numerous times and it doesn't seem to make a difference. So finally I have resorted to asking the community.
I have also bought a second battery which didn't solve the problem either.
Also, sometimes the battery will stay on a percentage for a couple of minutes.
I hope that you may have the answer, thanks in advance

[Q] All the sudden can't get past 1 hour screen on time?

Hey guys, for whatever reason I cannot get past an hour to an hour and a half screen on time per charge. I used to be able to consistently get 3 but for whatever reason that no longer seems to be the case. I use CM 10.1, usually the official but sometimes mastamoon's build. Intially I thought my battery went bad but even after replacing it with a new one I've seen no real difference. I actually replaced the phone once as well but still to no avail. Any ideas?
What's eating most of your battery? Do you have Better Battery Stats it has more specific info on wakelocks.
If you have no significant wakelocks first thing I would try is a different ROM/kernel combo. TouchWiz roms generally get better battery life than AOSP.

Yeah, but it seems like people usually end up getting better battery life on AOSP ROMs than I am. I haven't checked this iteration of CM but usually it's screen on time eating most of it and wake-locks doesn't seem to be an issue. It just drains super fast, especially with even 5 minute phone calls. I'm in the middle of Cleveland so signal shouldn't be an issue. Although it is usually yellow on the graph.
I would definitely install BetterBatteryStats and see what that shows you. I only run AOSP roms and while battery life isn't great its nowhere near that bad.
I'm having the same issue. No big wake locks, my phone just dies really fast. Running latest AOKP nightly with latest KT747 kernel

I also think it's mostly due to signal loss. You have an 8 hour no data connection. That entire time your phone is looking for a signal and killing your battery. I highly recommend trying to use a touchwiz rom, doesn't really matter which one. I used to use cm10 but it would drop my signal constantly. From my experience, touchwiz roms are much more stable when it comes to holding a phone signal.
There are some amazing devs who've made some cool aosp features and customizations built into touchwiz roms. Some highly customizable roms are goodness and hyperdrive. In my opinion, pair one of those with nova launcher and you'd get a very aosp like experience with the stability of touchwiz.
I also recently flashed the mb1 firmware, that's giving me slight increases in signal strength. Might just be a placebo affect, but I think it helps.

I am having a similar issue with stock, verizon OS. There was a system update just a couple days ago through verizon, and I installed it, ever since then it's been horrible. My battery usage blames it on "Media Server" though. Not really sure if it's related, but wanted to let you know in case it might help someone trouble shoot. Also, I noticed that since the update, my 4G icon in the top is on at the same time as my Wifi icon, which previously was just one or the other depending on if I was connected to Wifi or not.

Just disable the caller id app and the 4G icon won't show up. Also I don't think you get my post as I said extensive meaning watching movies and playing games with out any screen off time all in an hour and 40 minutes the person who started this thread is on an AOSP ROM and is getting the same. The main difference is I still had 2/3 of battery life left while his battery is dying or dead. Right now I have been on this phone for 3 hours and have about 60% of battery life left. I don't have a media server problem and on a custom touchwiz ROM with a custom kernel.
Usually the ROM is not a factor, its one of two things 99% of the time,.
1. a rogue app, that won't stop looking for location or data or is just hung
2. Poor or lost signal and the phone keeps boosting power to stay attached or search for signal;

Edit: As many have pointed out by now,
It appears that you are not getting the best cell signal on your phone. From personal experience, I can tell you that bad reception takes a huge toll on battery life.
You could try switching modems/roms to see if that will solve your problem. In my experience, I have gotten better signal using a TouchWiz ROM. However, I do miss the lag-freeness of CM

[Q] HTC One XL battery after one year?

As the pioneer batch of HTC One XLs approaching one year, I'm wondering how is the battery life after one year compared to a brand new set.
Since the battery is not easily replaceable, I'm considering sending in during warranty and ask for HTC One X+ battery replacement with charge.
Thanks in advance for sharing!
I haven't noticed any drop in battery life after one year. I have a release model (May 2012), so its over a year old now. Still getting over 48 hours on a single charge, with low usage (on WiFi when at home, usually not otherwise). Actually seems a bit better than at release, due to better power management by newer firmware; and/or better radio software.
This is my forth Android device (mix of phones/tablets), with some of them being used until they were almost 2 years old, and I haven't noticed any significant battery degradation on any of them.
What I have noticed (just anecdotally) is that there seems to be a bit higher incidence lately of post here by folks whose One X's have had a sudden power drop/power off, and the phone sometimes (but not always) coming back afterwards after being charged.
Hey!
I have some experience with this.
A few months ago I noticed my battery wouldn't last as long, and it got really bad. I sent it to HTC a few weeks ago right before my warranty expired and they changed it with no problem. Even got it back fast. Just tell them your battery has gone bad and give them some numbers like how long you can use it each day and how long it lasts, etc.
I would go ahead and try to have it replaced anyway, cause once your warranty expires you have to pay to get it replaced. Better safe than sorry, imo.
Warranty is for actual problems, not made-up hypothetical ones.
Exchanging a phone because you were actually suffering a battery issue is one thing. Exchanging it because you "might have an issue in the future", is very much different.
I started to notice I need to charge twice a day more often than before with similar use pattern. Though I can't say is the battery really bad now.
Anyway, I'm willing to pay charge for replacement of a HTC One X+ battery.

Anyway, I'm willing to pay charge for replacement of a HTC One X+ battery.

can we replace the battery of one xl with that of one x+ from htc service centre?
It is possible to use the one X+ battery but I doubt htc would do it.

if you have to ask, i dont suggest doing it.
My battery life took a nose dive after we got Jellybean on our phones.
I've tried a bunch of different ROMs and kernels but ultimately none of it helped. Battery saving tips and tricks, LTE off, lowering screen auto-brightness thresholds (or turning off auto-brightness altogether). All kinds of witch doctor-y battery (re)calibration methods. Nothing has really worked for me. Greenifying almost everything I can possibly kill without "breaking" anything on the phone.
Standby times are just "ok", nothing like I used to get. I get a ton of wakelocks from "android os", "kernel", "google services"...so BBS and GSAM logs ultimately don't tell me anything useful. Other obscure kernel wakelocks I can find very little information about even on XDA.
Battery drain is extreme whenever I have the screen on doing "light" tasks, texting, browsing the web/FB, chatting. Nothing heavy but I can see my battery % falling like I rock. On a good day I can get maybe 1.5-2 hours of screen time before my battery is almost dead.
Not sure what to do but I'm convinced there's something physically wrong with my phone/battery.
What ROM are you using?

Have you tried keeping your phone completely stock on Viper XL (no tweaks, no flashing other stuff), after a FULL wipe? Then wait a few days to see if it improves. If it doesn't, then I reckon it's safe to say your battery is ageing.

Sounds like Turge will be releasing a new build soon. I will try that out then. Thanks.
Not particularly meaningful but it helps illustrate my frustration.
Not even 2 hours screen time. All I did was chat and text. Again, nothing heavy.

Hmm. I uploaded 3 photos but only 1 is showing up...I can't append more photos from the mobile app nor can I delete this post.
2nd attempt...

Seems like the app only posts the last photo you select. Wondering why I paid for the "premium"...

After more then 1 year of use, I don't see any loss on the battery life. I must even say, with the recent android 4.2.2 and 4.3 ROM running the 3.4.+ kernel, the battery life as been extended greatly (Which is really impressive).
That said, before working with those ROM, the best experience i had on battery life was with ViperXL on Elemental Kernel.
Battery life has been very good after i installed the sense 5 ROMS. kickdriod and the new cleanstrip ROMs are nice balance of battery and performance. cleanstrip in particular is looking very good with all working features even BLuetooth.
