[Q] About Custom Roms

Sorry if this question doesn't belong here.
I need to know where i can start to make a Custom Rom. I was searching a lot but i was not able to find anything else than the method to make roms for HTC devices using a kitchen, but i need a more general look to know what i need to know to start this project. I was reading on source.android.com but i'm not shure if that's the only material that's actually out there on this topic.

hi all i have samsung captivate i897 from at&t but i am living in india i have stock android 2.2 firmware can anyone give me step by step guide to install cm on my phone my phone build is something like UCKJ1

whats wrong with the instructions that Cyanogenmod thread gives?

i am unable to understand those explanation i dont know if cyanogenmod is for froyo or gingerbread i am also not familiar with heimdall i often use odin so if anybody can give me instruction it will be very helpfull to me as i have said that i am in india so i dont want to brick my device

if it is your first rom DONT flash CM.READ and KNOW what you are doing before doing something BIG...
moving to cm will change your partitioning table. if you dont know what that means you shouldnt do it yet.
READ. LEARN. SEARCH READ MORE!!!
CM isnt 'for' froyo or gingerbread.
it REPLACES froyo or gingerbread (it doesnt matter what you are on now)
Learn, flash something NOT cm7 or miui. then learn more then flash CM
there are many how to flash guides. I know i wrote the newest one. it is stickied.
read the new user guide in my sig. learn what stickies are, then find the stickies and read them.

Go to mobiletechvideos.com or watch josh youtube videos on flashing cm keep watching read and get a usb download jig before you do anything it will save you if you [email protected]# up

i have flashed cm before on my galaxy mini but i am new to samsung captivate and i dont want to brick my device thats why i am asking for tutorial
you people have made captvate thread worse you do ot give answer to the people just ask question in replies go to galaxy mini general forum and see there how people are helping each other not asking question in bul**** question in replies

The Cyanogenmod wiki has a full install guide. If I was on the computer I would link it for you, but it shouldn't be hard to find

like just said above the miui has an install guide on their website. if you cant follow those instructions dont flash.
Go to captivate Developement section > Find Miui thread > Click the link to go to thier site;s install instructions. DONE.
why would we RE-Write the guide just for you?

I have upgraded my Atrix 2 to 4.0.4 and have rooted it.. All i have to do is to install CWM and go for a good custom mod (Pref. Jellybean)
I would like you guys to give some thread links of good custom mods to try out with and also help me how to install CWM.. Thread links would do...
I am nt well versed in these kinda stuffs. i can see n do it perfectly.. All i need is someone to assist to start with.

This belongs in Q&A not general, for future reference. I have reported this to the MODS, so they can move it.

if you're planning to flash jellybean then you need the boostrap from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=19355021 , with that installed, go to dev section of the forum and d/l a custom rom and flash following steps in the op , remember always to make a backup of your current rom

No mate i m nt lazy kinda but i m a bit worried to choose to right one.. if something goes wrong i would end up in bricking the device.. any expert advice is helpful..

So, you're not "lazy", just apprehensive. There's nothing wrong with that. However, what we do here on xda isn't to spend time explaining all the pros vs/ cons to all ROMs available, nor is it anyone's assertion as to what the "best" ROM may be -as this is all very subjective to the individual. There's a hefty ROM list of threads in the development section, so it's your responsibility to read over each one (that may strike you as interesting) and make your own assessment to which you may choose.
Also, each ROM thread by our dev team has explicitly detailed installation instructions, so there should be no reason as to why you would run into trouble -so long as you read, re-read, and fully understand what you're getting yourself into.
Also, there's a handy little help thread that I started for any and all questions, problems, etc. So, if you happen to run into anything, feel free to post there. Myself and a few others maintain that thread, so you should expect an answer without the need of posting a new thread each time you have a problem.

As I am about to start learning how to make a custom ROM I want to get all the useful information before I start. I intend to develop for Xperia E. So I am asking you guys to post xda threads that helped you, tools that you use, useful advices and information that you think is very important before entering such a big field.

Click here For a guide that helped me get started. it s very good and understandable and very easy to follow
You need to properly debloat it.
Install a performance mod (pure performance is what i use in my rom but u could also install fly-on mod instead. they re both good
Look for mods all over the internet
Try to make ur idea unique
U ll get there. Dont be impatient. u ll learn this stuff in weeks . it s no that hard

Hi Amby, thanks for contributing and I hope more people will do the same. It would be cool if one day there would be a sticky with info for begginer/intermediate/advanced devs

Guide for making custom ROM for begineers

Hello fellow readers,
I was just curious to know how to make a custom ROM tutorial on internet looks like there are not many guides available for beginners to know how to develop of ROMand the threads available on XDA are bit confusing and I don't know which one to follow and whether they will work for latest version of android.
This is request to all the developer and knowledgeable person on letting me know how should I start building ROM and provide a tutorial for making custom ROM valid in 2017
Hope all will help to add a new developer to XDA.
