[Q] benefit of getting new baseband - Optimus One, P500, V Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys, so i have been on the old baseband for a while.
So i was wondering, what are the benefits of getting the new basebands(like performance wise)?
and are what the disadvantages?
please help

Baseband determines how your Phone Harware and Software behaves with the network.
A newer beaseband version might ensure better battery management (during network searching and network usage), or might help to increase the Netwrk speeds and performance.
Disadvantages? It might not be compaitable with the ROM you are using, making you incapble of using the network of your phone. It might be unstable, causing network issues like unexpected network drops.
Thanks,
Rick

Instead of posting question research abt it first. When u really don't know, u then post

Well basically you can install new roms now if you switch to new baseband.

I've noticed that the new baseband gives a bit better reception and it allows you to run new baseband roms without having to flash the baseband fix. Other than that, there really isn't a big difference, and if you don't like it you can revert back to the old baseband.

You can keep old baseband, there are baseband fixes for ICS and GB (I am on ICS, but still on old BB, can't install drivers)
Advantages: better signal, sometimes faster network (in lower signal areas)
Disadvantages: funny sim users get no data (128k sims, whatever is that)

i thought there was a fix for the 128k sim cards (i'm guessing those are called funny sims)
I am pretty sure that the sim card i have is 128k sim card.

Advantages: better battery life, cool Roms like GSNAP by Neko
Disadvantages: none for me

Who can we attribute the data connections problems?
My data keeps disconnecting.
Wifi works but is the data disconnecting the that is stealing my patience.
It doesn't matter what I do or what ROM i flash it keeps happening.

all of the above? most likely drivers... they are pretty ****ing bad on this device...
some said on another page claims it is due to the fact your using a old sim card. they claim if you go to t-mobile ask them to transfer your info over to the new sim card that came with the g2x. or they can give you a new one for free. it will solve all your data problems good luck let us know if it worked.
i'm constantly losing connection and it cycles back from 2G to 4G all the time. I am using my SIM card from my original G1 so I'll try to get them to move over to a new SIM card. Hopefully this works or someone releases new radio firmware soon.
I got a new SIM card and that didn't solve my data connection issues.

i had to get a new sim card when i got this phone.. mine hasnt been updated since the HD2, i havent had any issues yet neither.
I'm running on EB 1.0.4 right now and super glad to even have a reliable internet connection. Seemed CM7 kept a good 4G signal though. With EB 1.0.4 I'm seeing it bounce back and forth more often then I'd like.
I would think radio, baseband and modem!
.....
I got a new SIM and it didn't help with data or phone connectivity issues. I just checked my phone status, and the G2X shows signal strength of -95 to -100 db. I put the SIM in my N1, located it next to the G2 and saw numbers of -75 to -80. I am not a programmer or engineer, but would have to figure either the HW drivers are absolute crap or it's a design flaw. Hoping someone comes out with a fix as I got this on the 90 day return plan at Costco. For now, given it's constant signal dropping I'll go back to my N1.

[Q] doubts about radio

Hi, im from brazil. i have some problems with network signal.
in places where friends of mine from the same network operators (vivo)
have a full 3g signal, i cant even get an edge. but in open spaces i get a good signal. im on CM7 nightlys,
baseband I9020XXKB3,
and my build is GRJ22.
signal on -95dbm now.
my questions are:
can i solve this problem by flashing a new radio such as XXKD1?
what really is the function of the radio?
does the contry that im on now request a diferent radio?!
thx for the attention?
Radio effectiveness differ from user to user. Depending where you are. What might be a good radio to me might be bad to you n vise versa. Unfortunately you will have to try them by yourself and judge.
For me kd1 gives me a better reception but slightly more battery drainage than kb3. Some users reported better data speed. Try it out and see.

thx for the attention man!
i'll try them all.
another thing, do you know if the radio already comes with the ROMs
or i would have to flash it always apart?

[Q] Are my signal strength issues radio related or carrier related

I just switched carriers and find that when I am indoors I get very low signal strength if any ay all. When I am in class, especially ones without windows, my phone can not find my carriers network. This was never a problem with my old phone and I usually would get 3 or 4 bars even in lecture halls with no windows or classes in the basement. I am with Moblicity (Ontario) and some times when I search for networks when mine isn't available Rogers (one of Canada's largest carriers) shows up but sometimes not so I can't determine for sure if the issue is Moblicity or not.
My radio is KD1 and I'm running Oxygen 2.2.2 with Netarchy 1.4.0, though I was having these issues on stock rom and kernel. Can any one with more experience on Moblicity let me know if the issue is their network.
I'm pretty sure the KD1 radio is a i9020t radio version and that matters because the 3g frequency used by those carriers has known issues penetrating walls. As for the signal issues, I'm not so certain. In the past there were phone manufacturers that were known for having better signal than other (read: Nokia) and I still think its true. What I mean is my signal with Samsung devices has never been as good as I've seen in other devices. Perhaps its all in my head but I don't know. Have you tried other radios?

KB3 searches and finds available networks much faster than KD1 but doesn't solve my problem
Then I'm guessing your issue lies in the signal strength of the nexus s on its own. To be honest no smart phone I've owned could match the signal of my old dumb nokias and I don't think you're going to find an easy solution

The signal loss that I'm getting seems a bit extreme though. I take 5 steps into Walmart and I can no longer find my carriers network
Hmm. That is extreme. So you've tried kd1 and kb3. Personally I had the best signal on kb3 but I'm on kf1 now. Maybe try that?

[Q] Indian Atrix 2 maximum signal strength at -75dbm 19 asu all the time

I have an Indian MB865 which is on 2.3.6 (5.5.28.37). The issue I am facing is of the signal strength which never goes above -75dbm 19asu :crying: I've tried with different carrier and the problem still persists. However, my defy is showing above 28asu (mostly 30asu) on the same location. I am having wicked battery drain on cell standby (above 40% on typical usage). Please share your opinion on this. Does anybody else on Indian 2.3.6 faced this issue? I believe its a baseband issue? If then, is it possible to flash the 2.3.5 baseband over 2.3.6? Please help.

Instead of flashing the baseband from previous version, you can as well update to ICS OTA and see if that fixes the problem. The official update has been rolled out in India and should be available for your phone. It will be around 230 mb in size.

No friend, it won't solve the issue. I got chance to check out a couple Indian Atrix 2 and all of them have strongest signal as -75dbm 19asu. Seems likes its done like that. I tried flashing the 2.3.5 baseband, but the issue persists.

2.3.6 does have some network issues.. my signal strength varies from -75/19 to -115. Im on ICS now and still the signal strength is the same, but the battery drain from standby and has greatly reduced.
Batt backup has improved a lot in ics..
Don't bother tinkering rom/firmwares for this. Just go OTA ICS bone stock rom, opt for 64k sim & that's it. Things you can see in terms of what works best in your area is by choosing for options between auto or manual network operator select & within each of them for checking auto only, 2g only or 3g only select. Install opensignal app & monitor towers & alternatively also check beforehand for signal hot spot /dead zones, operator wise for your coordinates on their actual site. remember cell tower location works only with 2G networks though. Stay away from crap apps like network boost/refresh etc as what they basically do is turn radio on & off. Use a nifty app like nosignalalert for sure.
In an unusual move I spoke to my cell network provider to provide me an option for femtocell (google it) since 3g and overall network was pathetic but no dice. Hope with the cell radiation complaint norms in place only genuine issues are addressed else we'll be having even an bigger issue of poor network here in India. On a parting note, when on GB & now better on ICS though, this model surely has low network issues inherently by itself.

That's a great news. I was planning to take the OTA but for some odd reason, in our company users on ICS are facing issues with Exchange Active Sync. I am waiting because of this.

Thanks for the info. I am on a 128K sim now (BSNL 3G). I think I will have to OTA to ICS first and see how things go on from there.

Reception issue

Looking for some advice on Reception/Low signal loss
To clarify i am near a tower.
I used to have full bars no less then 3
I tried flashing different modem--no go
I tried flashing new rom---no go
I reverted to stock GB--no go
Symptoms all started after I was trying to switch over to XperiaSlim Rom. Dont think that rom had anything to do with it but I was on Audiophile before that.
My signal strength is usually over -100db now. Any friendly advice would be appreciated. I exhausted all i know at this point and Google doesn't exactly give anything that could be used for us like changing a radio.
Go to T-Mo and get a new SIM card. With the merger, the towers currently known to your old SIM card might be somewhat odd.
Thanks I'll head there today to get one but weird and merger? Im not in a MetroPCS area....but heres hoping its a Sim card issue
Edit: All of the sudden on GB ROM the reception is now back in mid -80's DB to high 90's and now receiving proper reception. I dont know how it got fixed but I'm sure it was Tmo that was borked. I'm on XperiaSlim with LB6 modem rockin JB ^_^
