Traded: Tegra 3 One X for S4 One X ... WOW! - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Disclaimer: This method may have been due to the fact that my device or digitizer (I'll explain further) was damaged or I had a lemon. But here is my story:
- Sold an unlocked 4S for $450
- Wanted to try out Android and hate Sammy devices...
- Decided to give HTC One X a try
- Didn't have an upgrade so had to buy an unlocked international version because it released earlier.
With my international HTC One X from Malaysia, I would barely squeeze out 2hrs of screen time, and would have to charge my device 2-3x a day, and have yellow light leakage and spots around the screen. The device would get hot and had screen flexing and sensitivity issues. Right out of the box it was glitchy and the OTA's didnt solve much. I went from ROM to ROM to ROM and battery saving apps to CPU controls for a solution. I would literally drop 2-3% every minute, and sometimes in a matter of 5 mins I would drop 8% battery. I did the built in Battery test and would get 90% after an hour and it would say batter health = good. All of this to no avail, I WAS FED UP!
I was sick of it and found someone who wanted an International One X and had an AT&T One X. He knew about the battery and screen issues but decided to trade anyway.
BOY OH BOY! The difference is night and day. It's been a few days and I have never been happier with a phone. I get close to 4 hrs of screen time on the same level of usage on one charge. 3-4 hrs of music, 1 hr web browsing, texting and phone calls all day, facebook/twitter 2-3 hrs. No heat issues and no dropoff in performance even with just 2 cores. NO LAG or random reboots at all. If anything the device feels faster! While in hoboken/nyc the other day I got 4G LTE (since AT&T doesnt have LTE all over jersey yet) and it was freaking amazing. Close to the speeds I get with my FiOS connection at home.
Anything with Nvidia in it or on it I've ever owned so far has been faulty and been a nightmare. Idk if its just my badluck or coincidence.
But thats my story. I talked to my engineer buddy and he said my phone deff had a bad digitizer/screen that was eating the battery unnecessarily.
Anyone with their thoughts?

i would have prefered the one xl too but I have to say that with the leaked 2.05 base performance has been a lot better, almost as good as the one s.

Not being funny but who cares. You got the S4 one x and proud owner good. Was it so important to open a thread about it? Specially in the wrong forum. Open it in the at&t section at least.

Yeah! Niether do i. I easily get 3-4 hrs screentime as well. With surfing, social networks and two hour phone calls. Meh! 2.05 seems promising.

funny that One X s4 owners keep pming me about ultra smooth launcher patch too...and One S owners too...
so really go to the One S/X AT&T section and see how many people are contemplating switching to T3 version
people are never happy when there is always (if)
by the way you had an obviously defective unit so how can you judge?
all screen issues you mention are a defect, even more those same manufacturing issues exists on the American One X too , so it was only your luck
the One X can give you over 2 hours and a half of heavy non stop tegra 3 THD gaming, on standby it barely spends anything ON STOCK ROM
so really you had a F****ed up unit and didn't experience a proper T3 One X

Yeah I think you made a mistake mate but each to there own.

I was tempted to get the XL rather than the X, because I think the S4 would have been adequate, and LTE would've been nice. However, 16GB vs 32GB settled the debate for me.

Yes, 16GB is plain dumb but there are 32GB One XLs. Telstra Australia sells them so others may have them as well.

Interesting, I never knew that. A bit late now I guess, but I'm happy with my 3G anyway, and it's hard to complain about a Tegra in your phone

a lot of us know that the 28nm process of the s4 is a lot more efficient than the tegra, but we just arent ready to give up the 25gb storage for a mere 9gb, along with the big support any international version would get compared to country or continent dedicated versions. AND we have thd~

Well lots of people are in the same boat I think.... Bottom line though is that I would not look at another HTC device until its been out at least a month..... Am sticking to the HTC One X though as the prices have dropped a lot here in the UK if I were to swap to an S3, and not worth the extra £££ it will cost to change over..... Hopefully the reports of the newer roms sounds good and S-OFF getting closer will help those like me on a branded phone.

well i am on a branded phone and unlocked and rooted and could not be any happier. yeah it would be nice to have s-off to have the full potential of this phone but the one thing i love about this over the s3 is two things..
i much prefer now SLCD over Amoled for the fact that outside it is far more visible in the sun than Amoled. and second gaming on this phone is pure heaven cause you do not need to mess with third party software to play games which are specifically made for our handset...if i was to use the s3 more than likely i would have to use chainfire 3d to be able to play the nvidia games and i could not be asked with that

yes we only have few GL games to optimize but they do work in full
but the other devices they have to use chainfire for so many really attractive THD games and even then they will not run as good
im interested to see SGS3 running NOVA 3 in full mode, since it doesnt have all the effects officially (needs chainfire i think)

Switched to the Int'l One X and switched back

Hey there guys just want to fill in all the people who were thinking about switching to the international One X because of bigger space, more dev support, quad core and such.
First of all I was always interested of the international version because of the Tegra 3 and the bigger space while believing that I'd have a better experience with the phone.
I decided to order the Tegra 3 version through Amazon and when I received it, I delved right into the custom roms that are available. Now while I very much enjoyed the dev support, something about the int'l version never felt up to par with the att version.
Coming from just a user experience perspective I want to compare these differences of which I think are important to make the device more superior and user "enjoy-ability".
The Speed and Fluidity of the UI:
Like I said before the Int'l version was not as smooth as the ATT version. I used the Android Revolution HD rom and while it was a great rom it never felt up to par to say the CleanRom.
And just to add to this, the Int'l One X ran very hot compared to the ATT version.
Battery
Personally I felt that both had very good battery life and felt even as long as you tweak up the One X with some kernel and rom tweaks provided.
Data
This is what made me cringe when I decided to use the Int'l One X. Often times I need to look up something on google maps really quick and with the ATT One X, I always felt that it succeeded my expectation because of the LTE. So if you're in an area with LTE, the ATT is a very good choice vs the international version.
Customization
The Int'l One X hands down have the most customization with MIUI which I tried and the CM9 builds out there. There are even a lot more mods and themes available. So I was always able to mess with my phone "endlessly".
Now with that said the Android market have a lot of good widgets that can help with your customization needs. And I never felt that I could not customize my ATT One X enough with the apex launcher, minimalistic texts, simi folder, simi calendar etc...
Space
With ~9gb vs ~25gb of space, there isn't too much to argue about here over which is superior and no matter what people say about using just dropbox or google drive. It's aways nice to have enough space to store your stuff that you can access easily.
However, I do prefer more space (duh) I never ran past the 6gb mark on my phone.
Conclusion
So in the end the speed and fluidity of the ui and LTE made me switch back to the ATT version (not that I had return it, I just had it in the box while I test out the int'l one x).
Now dev support is always nice and much nicer when there is a lot of it but what we have now for the ATT One X keeps me satisified. And most likely we will have more dev support now that the US customs had stopped delaying HTC phone shipments.
And for those who are switching to the Samsung Galaxy S III, have fun with your silly looking phone

@ kravguy:
Without LTE both phones use HSPA+ or HSDPA, so the speeds should be the same.
The international one can get up to 21.6Mbit/s on HSPA+ like your at&t one I guess
@ OP:
Is there a big difference in smoothness?
And also how did they compare in speed, like when opening apps etc?
Thanks

Well if you've never used the ATT One X and just went straight to the Int'l one then you wouldn't care but I notice a moderate difference in smoothness especially since most apps out there don't take advantage of the quad core.
My 4g speeds were the same as my other 4g non lte phones
I really don't understand why ppl think the tegra3 model is worth more

4 cores?
You know what, I'm fine having 2 cores.. the interface is what is limiting the amount of stuff you can do at once with phones anyways. Until there is some type of interactive or holographic interface or something of the sort, we just wont be able to input commands fast enough for the phone to end up lagging behind. This One X (rogers version with the qualcomm chip) is really snappy. I haven't tried an international version yet, and don't think I ever will.

I used Android Revolution HD rom with franco's latest kernel. What I'm saying is that I did not notice any noticeable difference on battery once I used that rom/kernel. And the S4 will be superior to the Tegra 3 processor except for gaming.

2 days left to return

Just found out that the galaxy s3 for the US will have the same CPU as
The one x. It will also come with 2gb of ram, which is a real plus. What would you guys do in this situation. I'm still kind of worried about that pentile screen, have to see it in person but I dont have much time left.
The 3 main criteria for me are screen quality, camera quality and feel of the device. I really dislike the screens on Samsung devices. All things considered, I'd be miserable looking at that display as a trade for questionable improvements in speed. A larger SD card, while a great option, isn't something I really need.
Build quality is also a big deal. I like the feel of the one x more than any other Android device I've handled. The S2 variants left me feeling like I had a bargain phone in hand.
I've heard great things about the camera on the S3, but while I'm still having some trouble in generating the type of shots I'd like with the HOX it's an excellent outdoor shooter.

I'd hate to say it, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I was dead set on this phone once Samsung made their announcement (was a toss up between the GNex, the GSIII or the HOX). I figured the awesome dev folks around here would get the phone unlocked so we could eventually run some stock form of ICS (which was a successful bet!). But the issues the phone has (WiFi BS, the lagging in the games, the frustrations with multitasking-esque stuff) are annoying. I was really hoping AT&T would be pushing out their fix soon to address at least the WiFi, but I was hoping for too much I guess. After this phone, I don't think I'll every be buying another subsidized phone again. I'd rather just roll with the Nexus line so I can freely do what I want with the phone.

A lot of the issues with the one x have been fixed with the latest ruu, and some nice tweaks have been made with the few rims we have now. Just wait until we get the kernel source and watch our battery and performance skyrocket. Imo, stick with one x and wait for the goodies to come.

I have a question...are these goodies you are talking about only going to come to those who are rooted? Is there expected to be an official release that fixes some of the issues I am having? My Wifi radio stinks and the cell radio is less than optimum. However, because I love the screen so much, I'm sticking with my HOX for right now.
I got mine at Wal-Mart for $158, and they told me I had 15 days. I wonder if that is just the window to return it and void the contract extension, or if I'm out of my window entirely? Although there is a lot I love about my HOX, That 2GB of RAM really has me squirming, together with the lockdownedness of the HTC.

The leaked 1.85 RUU has an updated radio, which may help your WiFi and cell reception issues. Its impossible to say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet its only a matter of time before this version (or something even newer) is made available as an official OTA.
After owning the Atrix, which had double the RAM and CPU of the original Galaxy S... I'd rather have a better screen.. Sure the One X has software issues like multitask, but we have root and the unlocked bootloader.. CM9 and other great roms will follow (I hope)... I think I'll be sticking w/ the One X. But if u really need the SD card slot then I guess your choice is already made.
Read the papers from Walmart at&t requires a 30 day window Verizon, and others are 15 from Walmart.

I'm keeping mine but I'm known to play craigs list like a day trader. I'm willing to bet there will be people who want to trade their SGS III for the HOX. I'll consider doing this if development on the HOX stagnates. I don't think it will though after all we don't have Source Code yet.
This phone os perfect for me. It fits my hand, it's light but not too light and the battery life is amazing.
Just returned it....now it's just a waiting game. Kinda miss the phone already especially going back to the iphone 4's tiny little screen .The specs on the new iphone should be coming out soon too.
I'm returning mines, the GS3 was just announced. Pre orders start June 6. The one x is a great phone but I prefer the GS3. Bigger screen, removable battery plus a sd card slot.

The Pentile display killed the SGS3 for me. Don't say "you can't see it" because once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's especially noticeable if you're like me and have been using iPhone 4 and now One X for 2+ years.

agreed on the display. with some of the wifi problems i've been having the last couple of weeks, frankly, i want to return it, but i just can't stand the idea of getting an SGS3 with that damn pentile screen and the overall pukey, pseudo-nature 'inspired' (read: playing the marketable environmental/sustainable/green card) theme. i've go ttill tomorrow to convince myself that the risk of my wifi never working properly isn't enough to make me return this thing...
Return the phone, then drive to different ATT store and get a new one for 30 more days

Should I swap for Tegra 3 HTC One X

Hi,
For those who had both can I ask your opinion? Should I switch the rogers (same as AT&T) version of the One X for a international version with Tegra 3?
I really like the tegra 3 chipset and the extra memory.
Please let me know,
Let's see
The Tegra 3 chip based phone has more build quality issues, worse battery, no LTE, worse audio.
Nah. Not for me.
I would, but solely because I'm a flashaholic and I'm not holding my breath for LTE here in the Philly area.

No LTE (so Cal area) and build quality issues? Heck no, for me at least. Not to mention the battery life difference. I keep chargers everywhere just to keep my S4 alive.
To each their own!

If you are having battery life issues with your S4, then you've got something else going on. I would see if you're having any wake lock issues or a rogue app that's killing your battery. Try a factory reset. It's widely known that the S4 version has far superior battery life than that of the Tegra 3.

I ordered one from Amazon. I had instant buyers remorse and since I couldn't cancel the order I had to return it as soon as it arrived. I opened it and booted the phone up just to check it out.
It was kind of a scary experience and I won't be ordering an unlocked phone from Amazon again. What I got was a T-Moble (germany) branded HOX. Complete with Their boot logos and bloatware.
I didn't even use it to make a call or anything. It just seemed "off" to me.

Why do you like the Tegra3 chip? Cause everyone says its so good?
The extra memory is a plus though, I use DropBox a lot however. Might not work for most but I keep all my movies there.

I sold my international HOX and went with the XL. Even though the T3 is supposed to be faster in certain circumstances, the S4 with LTE is snappier, less lag, faster data transfer (even with HSPA+; almost no latency), and battery life is almost double (I sh*t you not). All we need is kernel source and the XL will be the device to have. I do miss the 32gb storage but can manage without it. Go with the XL, you won't regret it.

Thanks for all your replies.
I like the Tegra3 version because of all the exclusive games and extra storage. Having 16gb is a pain but as you said I can manage with dropbox and box.com.
Maybe i'll just get the nexus 7 for the games.
Thanks
Best of both worlds that way. It's what I'm going to do.

exactly. I'm getting the nexus 7 for games as well. I had the Tegra 3 version before getting the rogers one x. The battery life was ****. turn on the phone at 7 am and was nearly dead by 3 pm. now with the rogers one x I can actually last 1 full day without charging.

Galaxy S III I747 vs AT&T HTC One X, Whats your opinion?

Ok, so i have had the AT&T Galaxy S3 for a couple weeks now and its not wowing me like i was expecting and been eyeballing the AT&T HTC One X and not sure on getting that next and selling the S3. So what are your opinions on whats a better device and why its the better device. And before some one trys to bash me, i like other peoples review on devices and why than going by some internet post without hands on backing to it.

In a nutshell. The sgs 3 is the same processor as the one x. Performance will be about the same with multi tasking being better on the sgs 3. You give up an sd card slot and a removable battery in favor of a better screen and more of a solid feel.

You are also going to be giving up a phone that actually has released source code. I love my One-X, but i fear for its development future.

I hope you're right man. I think it's the superior phone. If we could only get something like CM9 working completely that would fix the multitasking, then i'd have no complaints.
I had the one x , sold it and bought an s3 (att/rogers dual core version)
Honestly and truly the one x is a better device in some ways. The battery life is much better on the one x due to the lcd screen using less power despite the two having the same processor. The screen is better too, the one x screen is a lot better and clearer even at lower brightness. Not to mention it just overall looks better (brighter and truer whites, colours also actually look natural unlike amoled). And you cant even deny the fact that the one x has a much much better build quality its a better and more solid feeling device.
Though the siii has an edge over the one x in some areas like sense vs touchwiz, i find that touchwiz almost never lags vs the one x still had hiccups in some areas slight homescreen lag etc etc which is almost non existant on the siii. Plus for me the major issue that drove me away from my one x is the multi tasking issue, basically the one x has the most aggressive app switcher that kills an app almost instantly after you exit it, the phone is near useless at multi tasking. iE if i was listening to music and went to change the song while browsing, when i came back to the browser the phone would have to "reload" the app.
With that said, the two phones are practically neck to neck, just depends what you prefer as strongpoints and what you can live with as weak points. I would sell my siii in a heartbeat if the stupid multi tasking issue was fixed on the one x.
just my " two cents."

Hmm i got lucky and got a good price for my one x, bought it for 500, sold it for 480 and bought the galaxy s iii for 500.
I prefer the screen and build quality of the One X but love that Samsung released source code so soon (most likely just to steal sells and pull users like myself)
Everything else has been said. They both have advantages and disadvantages. It's pick your poison.
Me, I chose to go where the source was. No sense waiting 90 to 142 (if there's an update) days and using workarounds to unlock the bootloader if someone else openly offers both.
I know, I'm a broken record since I got this phone. I'll try to post a little less lol. Just frustrated with HTC

The main reason i dont like my GS3 is because the build quality of it feels a bit cheap, like the back battery cover already has a crack in the top right corner. I also get a few kinks like my SD card randomly unmounts, i get lags here and there, a few FC's, and launcher restarts. Other than that the phone is solid...Just a couple things i would expect it to tackle but samsung kinda over looked.
On the other hand ive used HTC devices before and there build quality even back when i was using the G1 was great, they make it feel solid along with adding the perfect amount of weight to the phone. Ive never had a problem with an HTC phone, only with there batterys, thats why i was kinda leery on the One X not having a removable back so if the battery does screw up like it has in my G1, HD2 and MT4G i can just easily put a new one in. But overall i dont mind it having less ram and no SD port because i pay for my dropbox monthly to have extra space.

Its getting redundant with that same reply im getting. Like i stated in the OP "And before some one trys to bash me, i like other peoples review on devices and why than going by some internet post without hands on backing to it." I much rather take to a forum where the main phone is the HOX where people that will actaully reply used the One X and maybe both One X and SGS3 and can give me solid reasoning why. I trust some ones word that has used the device longer then just some one who is just doing a review because they have too...

Thanks for your questions. After all it is the General HTC one X forum!
Rather than waste a post with a school girl reply, I will help answer your question.
I have had both and took back the SGIII. I like the One X better, mainly because the SGIII screen does not work as well outdoors and the whites are more greyish than the One X.
Hope that helps?
What's not "wowing you" about the SGS 3? This info might get you a better answer.
We seem to be losing more and more people everyday to the sgs3. Source better come soon or I think this phone will be doomed development wise.

What would you buy?

So with taxes I'm looking to spend about $350 on a phone with no contact. I WAS thinking the nexus 4 but people on craigslist are retarded asking $500+ because people bought out the play store with the intentions of reselling and ripping people off. So other than that I was thinking of getting an s3 or a note 1, possibly a one x.
My questions are, which carrier version, and which one should I get. I want one that I could use on family mobile with better speeds, maybe simple mobile or something. I'm into rooting and roms and overall best specs out there. So which phone should I get in that price range, and which carrier version? Processor and ppi as well as camera is most important to me.

I honestly would go for a razr Maxx hd.... Or an s3. The hd doesn't have as much rom support but it will once the price drops. Plus my battery lasts all day with super heavy data usage!

Personally, the Note is a little on the large side for a phone, however, some people like it. Would suggest that you get some extended hands on time with it out before buying. S3 has good feedback except for the build materials (i.e. drop and chip) and is roughly the form factor that I would be comfortable with and there is quite a bit of ROM development for it. A friend uses a Note 1 and swears by it, connects it up as a laptop at home with keyboard, mouse and monitor (his portable office). Haven't had a chance to test out the OneX but what I have read on the forums are that it has good battery life, solid performance and since it is basically stock, updates are quick. Just got WP8 as a xmas gift, from an SGS2. Don't recommend it, until they fix some pretty fundamental missing features but the camera is by far the best I have seen so far.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Samsung phones. Have a GS2 skyrocket and it's an awesome phone. ROM support is strong, and definitely affordable on your budget.
i would buy the htc one x+. i really like the htc os. a few years ago i bought the htc desire hd and i've never regretted it. so why not switching to another phone by htc
HTC One X looks very cute. But I heard about screen problems. I am most interested in Nexus 4, however it's not available in my country, but I would recommend it. I love that Nexus 4 has stock Android.
HTC one xl owner here....absolutely no screen problems. Gorgeous screen, great ROMs with great devs, great camera and battery life and you will find some at a very nice price. Only downside is storage and no external SD slot.
Funny u mention screen problems as I've heard the nexus 4 has some.
This phone is really good, not cheaply build like the s3 and personally I feel its better (hence why I chose it over the s3)
Oh and BTW our phones are pretty much unbrickable, flashing ROMs is a breeze and rooting can be done with a downloadable script. And they do t suffer from gs3 problems which they seem to be having plenty of.

Well, at the time of release, that was the feeling wasn't it . A 18% (I think off hand) increase in screen with a 25% increase in battery. So yea, it is basically an S2. 0.2GHz more and most everything else is the same.
I think you should go with all new Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch HD Super Amoled touchscreen display that supports 1280x720 pixel resolution natively which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
