I've been watching the Android scene for a while now and have not bought a phone yet because the hardware hasn't met my needs. So I'm coming back to where I started tinkering with WM5 and 6.5 phones on this forum.
Can anyone recommend an Android phone that isn't the size of a brick, fits snugly in my hand.
Has
NFC
dual/quad core
Micro Sd slot
1080p video recording @ 30 fps
HDMI out
Accepts Keyboard and Mouse input either through BT or USB
Wifi N
And will run on UK 4G.
Can be or has been rooted
Does such a phone exist yet?
I'm not intrested in big screens as it makes the phone almost as big as a tablet and from a portability aspect this is not good.
I am thinking about going for an Iphone unless android can match what siri does.

I'm sorry, but you want an iPhone...for siri?? The lame voice assistant that answers questions at about a 60% accuracy rate? The one that makes you look like a douchebag that's too cool to talk to actual people, so instead you talk to your phone as if it were a person? The one that most users see on TV and go "AWWW COOL" but then they play with it for 5 minutes then get bored?
Not to mention the phone itself matches less than half the criteria you specified.
Just buy a damn iPhone and leave this forum to the adults. There are Android phones out there like the Xperia NXT line that better match what you said you wanted, but I can already tell that you'll ***** about one or two of your criteria not being there, totally ignoring that the alternative phone you're looking at matches even less..but has a gimicky voice assistant which somehow makes it all ok.
Helpful please

*sigh* Wow a one liner that I could expect from nothing more than a child.
I didn't say I was going to get an I phone I like the idea of a hands free digital assistant. I suppose you could argue that the amount of money you spend on an Iphone/contract would be best put towards a real PA But I'm not going to do that.
I can develop android apps so it would make sense to get an Android phone. But I don't just want a run of the mill phone wifi and gps handset with a terrible camera. There are very few Phones on the market at the moment that fit my hardware needs. I'm fussy because I buy a contract and am then stuck with the hardware for the duration. I could stick with my N8 as it's done me proud, I don't need another phone but if I do upgrade then I want the phone to fit my needs not something that I'm going to be disapointed with just because someone said "Oh get it, it's got this cool feature" ;and only to find that cool feature is not on my want list for a replacement phone.
I should thank you for the other info I'll look into that handset.
If there are any other Android Handsets anyone could think of that are pretty stacked then I'll take a look. Shame Nokia didn't go with Android as they would have killed the competition.
Eva!
Ok so android has got Eva. That's good. Right so Pa sorted. Just need to find thr right hardware device.
Looks to me like you want a Galaxy S3. It meets most, if not all of your wants in a phone. The only one I'm not sure about is the 1080p video recording.
Nope
S3 is way too big and flimsy, failed drop tests. It wouldn't last 2 minutes in my back pocket. At the moment I've got my eye on the HTC One X range although I have been looking at concept phones too which look very sexy and although aren't real, they could be next year or the end of this year. Might have to wait a bit longer for android hardware to meet my needs.
It's a shame that no one want's to start porting an Android build to Nokia Symbian hardware. I know it's an epic task but the bootloader is available so It's not impossible.
Nokia got bailed out by Microsoft and part of the deal obviously was going to be that Nokia use Windows as it's OS. Android dev license is still cheaper than MS.
Still looking
Went to a few phone shops to try out some of the devices. A lot of phones are getting too big to hold. If I want a tablet I'll buy a tablet I don't want a bigger screen.
The Experia P is the size of handset I'm looking for and the build quality looks ok.
I see sony are releasing the Xperia GX soon so will see if this meets the Camera/Audio expectations. At the moment Audio quality in videos are what I'm looking at. The quality of audio in Nokias N8 is still trumping Android phones. If you are being recorded instead of the one doing the recording then the mic quality isn't so good on android unless you are on top of the phone. If anyone can beg to differ then I'm open to suggestions and What's the point of a 1080p recording device without the ability to store over 16GB of video?
Still looking...
OK Found the phone.
Just one problem I doubt it's going to make it to the UK

go for galaxy s3
Android doesn't really have any good voice assistant yet, i've tried all of them and they are terrible at even the simplest of commands. But, Google has said they are working on one to compete with Siri. That being said, i would go with Google's own Galaxy Nexus ($350) as they will get all the Android updates first (since its Google's phone) And the Nexus is one of the few that can actually use Google Wallet (NFC) The screen isn't too big, its comfortable in your hand, the battery life is good, and you should have no problem finding a keyboard dock for this phone. In my opinion, the best bang for your buck would be the Galaxy Nexus, and you can buy it from the Google Play Store. Best of luck!
Google has released google now which is way better than siri! And it's true that google wants to release something better that will compete beat siri

Hey XDA,
My beloved Omnia 7 has sailed off into my sister's hands, and I was left stranded on an island of sadness, phoneless.
But no matter, as the power of the intertubes brought me here, and much other places.
I am looking for a savior budget phone.
And I found one.
No, folks, it's not a WP7 device as you may have anticipated, ala the shining turd that is the Nokia Lumia 610 (or some other
generic, faecal device). I have ventured to the lands of china and have explored options I would have not dared to before due to fear
of SARS, rape, and being casually ripped off by scamers.
And guess what, brotha? It appears like the Hero 9300+ is my guy.
Yeah, yeah, I know. A clone, not to mention a modified one. But if this is a turd, it's a sparkling one, worth a whole $200 dollars.
Some specs (the most important + drawbacks):
-CPU: MTK6577, two cores running at a generic 1GHz. Seems like a piece of ****, but one that flies pretty fast. Antutu scores look rather promising.
-GPU: SGX-531. The old cousin of our modern SGX-540's and 544's. Not bad, not great. It does the job for me given I can play
generic time wasters like Dead Trigger at a solid 30fps with next to no lag.
--OS: Android 4.0.4 (marketed off as 4.1 JellyBean; the developers thought they could fool us English folks by editing the SDK during ROM creation, har har har. ******s.)
-RAM: 512MB. This may be a problem given ICS takes up what, 300MB? Plus I want to run a launcher (Why? Because **** you, that's why) which will take up additional memory space.
-Camera a world class piece of ****. 5MP marketed as 8MP, records video at who knows what resolution. (I will be installing another ROM for this bad boy which will enable 1080p recording unless you guys have better suggestions how to pimp this thing up).
BEST PART: Gorgeous 5.3 inch display.
Anyways, that's that for specs.
Price is $210, with Fedex delivery, from Pandawill (Safe? Not safe? Hm, got PayPal covering my ass anyway).
THE ULTIMATE QUESTION:
Is there anything around this price that beats the **** out of this but has a display which is not too small?
Am I making the right decision here?
Thanks matey for giving this your two cents. It's all appreciated.

I highly doubt you would find another phone that isn't from china that has those specifications and price tag, however, I still wouldn't buy the phone because...well it's from china and not of a legitimate/recognised phones manufacturer. I would instead pass this phone and maybe save up another 100 dollars and get a phone of similar specs (maybe not the same screen size) from htc, sony, samsung etc. just for the security, support, safety and the mods

Hey matey, thanks for the reply.
I don't think I can agree with you more. This is a huge risk and I know it, although review have been rather positive (which, I must say, is encouraging).
Given the price point and the fact that I need a phone ASAP, I am not so sure I can bang out another $100 bucks for an imaginary phone with similar specs; I mean, this thing performs closely to the galaxy nexus- a ~$500 device. I also found out that Chinese phones are going to be blessed with new quad and oct core processors in Q4 2012 and Q2 2013, respectively. Going to be an insane jump, but I bet they will be price accordingly.
Thanks for your response nonetheless, I'll definitely go ahead and snoop around for brand devices right now.

Glad to see you coming around in your mindset... imho, buying some Chinese knockoff is only asking for trouble. If it were my decision to make, I'd find a friend with an old Android you can use and buy a real phone with a warranty, a little support, and some quality behind it. The specs may be one thing, but if I know Chinese knockoffs, everything about the case/finish/etc will be absolute junk.
I'd rather use a non-Android for a while, personally...

I was actually looking into WP7 devices earlier because my previous device was one. I am sad to note that nothing compares other than an old Samsung Focus (much like my Omnia) from the US for $170. I mean, it's not too bad, but I feel it's time for an upgrade. I snooped around other shops, nothing comes close to the Hero, but your suggestions have shaken me up a bit. I'll be wary as this online buying thing is no game of tag- they can disappear on you.
What did you eventually purchase?
I have X710D and did have a bad experience with the seller, but eventually found another seller who I have now purchased many phones from with great success.
In relation to Chinese phones, I have to say walk with care as many fiddle the OS version number and it always pays to ask as many questions as possible prior to purchase. If there are features that you want then ask for confirmation, if they don't know then treat this as a warning about the seller.
Quality: I have no problem with the quality of build of Chinese phones. I do however have an issue with some stupid design decisions - like the 3.5mm headphone jack on the X710D - can't take standard headphones.
Just found out that the X710D has stopped manufacture, so hope that a better design is coming.
9300+ looks promising.
Hi all.
I too was in the market for a new phone and purchased a 9300+ from a site called Android for cheap and I can tell you it's a great phone. It's zippy and handles anything you can throw at it. I'm running wp8 custom on mine and it looks beautiful on the big screen. I'd recommend this phone to others as have I already. Gaming on it has no lag and due to the multi touch screen its really responsive.
I've had mine for 3 months and I think when I eventually purchase a new phone it will probably be a newer model of the same phone..... If they are still in existence then lol.
All in all its an awesome phone. I don't think you will be disappointed

The one and only thing that frustrates me about the Galaxy line is the lack of sports cases/bands that fit well, protect the phone and are comfortable. I've gone through a half dozen since the SGSII and they all sucked. And some were outright highway robbery for what they offered.
This Elevate Sleeve on Kickstarter looks like it has good potential. I'd back it, but the creator will only support bigger devices if he gets more than 25 requests. If anyone also thinks this could be the right sports case, head over and make a request for the SGSIV. There are other "sleeve" type cases, even a couple from Kickstarter, but they are just like the armbands, not real high quality, look cheap and still have that raggedy plastic face.
I was going to buy something similar from nike yesterday, but the last time I checked it out I didn't notice, it was for iphones/ipods.....I was seriously bummed.
Big thanks for posting this and getting my hope up a little bit!!
If I understood correctly, then they consider requests, not how many will actually going to buy this?? Everyone who even likes the idea....start emailing
The price is actually quite good too.....~10€ more expensive than the nike's long sleeves that were 50% off, but the elevate definitely seems alot nicer!!!

Yeah, as I mentioned above, there are several other sleeve-style cases, but none that don't suck. I'm guessing you haven't used the NIKE version, which doesn't fit an SGSIV with or without a case on it, nor is it comfortable. Also the NIKE sleeve has the same cheap plastic face and the phone sits on the underside of your forearm rather than the top (very uncomfortable position when running IMO.) Sadly, it is still the best of the cases I've tried, too bad it doesn't work with anything but an old iPhone I use as an iPod.
I'd wager that this or even this were as much an inspiration as the NIKE+ sleeve for the Elevate.
If your criteria for buying something is that it be an original idea, your place must be empty. We don't come across may truly original ideas in the world we live in today. I'll happily take an innovation on an existing product in lieu of an original/bleeding edge product if it gets the job done. If we didn't buy better versions of existing products, we wouldn't have iOS nor Android devices, now would we?
That said, the Elevate is an unproven product, not unlike the betas we all like to run here at XDA, so I am not touting it as the end-all-be-all in fitness cases. From the specs and the prototype, it certainly looks like an innovation over the NIKE version. I'm also not asking anyone else to back the product. I'm just hoping that some folks will head over and chime in for the S4 so that if I decide to back it, I will have a case to receive.

That's exactly where there problem started, it's for the iphone...a tiny inferior phone.....a lot of useful stuff is produced for iphones/ipods only because they get to link their product with apple's name....but the rest of us have to suffer...
The approach on the materials is nice...shows that more consideration has gone into the product plus a possibility to get it for other phones as well....at least that seemed to be the idea behind this thread....

Bingo!
And as of today, they only need 17 more requests to make this for the S4.
(Potential) Backers — Here's a quick update on the request count that we've gotten so far. Looks like S4 is our most popular so far. Not surprised. Just 17 more requests and we're adding it to the production list.
I put in my request yesterday! Hopefully we get enough for our S4's to be accommodated because this sleeve looks amazing! :good:
I've asked the maker to consider a semi universal sleeve for larger (not the largest, sorry Note folks) phones as this range is relatively similar in size.
Visual Comparison and SIze Specs
Found this kickstarter the other day and backed it. Seems to have a lot of potential if it'll fit the bigger phones (S3/S4)
Hi,
Going into a travel for our vacation, and i need help finding a good kit for macro and wide angle lens for note 4. Im really passionate by picture and i dont wanna bring my big DSLR to take few picture. Im scared to get robbed.
I need something that can be ship in canada.
I would like a tripod too and a bluetooth remote to take picture of me and my wife in our holiday.
If someone can point be a good kit, or something that can be ship to canada from amazon ebay or etc, it would be appreciated. please make sure it fit into note 4.
I only see kit for iphone...
Btw, i tried to search in this forum with the word lens and kit, but i didnt get any result unless i did wrong :/
Thanks in advance, i don't check this tread each 5 minutes, so if you can post the kit that could fit for note 4, it would be appreciated.
Much appreciated
Losthenes
You can find them online, you just have to do allot of searching in order to find them. As the majority of lens manufacturers tend to only make stuff for the iPhone.

this one doesnt ship to canada
Try ebay. They have some selection

Hi ... I am a photographer and have researched lenses for the Note 4. I haven't purchased these yet, but it is my understanding that the best lenses are built by Moment Lens. Here is a link:
http://momentlens.co/
I hope to pickup both their wide angle and tele lenses, but purchases in both my mirrorless and DSLR kits have been taking priority. I like the fact that you can just get a new mount to use your Moment lenses if you get a new smartphone.
I picked up a bluetooth remote off of eBay. If you get a tripod, make sure you get a mount to hold the phone. I use the ShoulderPod S1 mount, but it is probably more than you need. I have a Manfrotto tripod mini tripod, but it may be more than you want. Joby makes a lightweight tripod/mount combo that I have considered for a lighter kit. Good luck.
EDIT: Found the Joby XL, here is a link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1062045-REG/joby_jb01324_griptight_micro_stand_for.html
I'm become something of a backyard photographer with the local wildlife/plants in my yard and really enjoy it. I live in the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama which is a medium sized city. My neighborhood is rather secluded and on a small mountain which has tons of woods in the area. A large amount of reptiles, birds, and other small animals are always around to observe and snap images. The camera on this phone is decent but the macro mode blows big time. I have an older 12 mp digital with x18 zoom telescopic lens. It does the job but certainly isn't a great camera these days. Are these kits worth it or should I save a few more bucks and grab a dslr? The lens kit for the Note 4 certainly looks neat but after setting it all up in the end isn't a regular camera easier? Maybe if you don't have a real camera it's a cheaper alternative to decent pics but I'm not sure... No sarcasm intended. Just wondering what you all think. Thanks for any info or opinions!
If you want to take some really good pictures and have a interested in pursuing photography as a career path or hobby. Then I would recommend getting a DSLR as no matter what kinda lens attachment you get for your Note 4. You are not gonna be able to take such high quality pictures that you would be able to take with a DSLR. Sure the Note 4 has a very good camera but at the end of the day it can match what you can do with a DSLR.

If you are shooting around your home, it is definitely better to have a dedicated camera because carrying it is not an issue. There is a glut of cameras on the market and you can find good deals. A dedicated camera will significantly outperform the Note 4 and open up the hobby for you. But, it takes a little knowledge to select and use a camera. You can start by going to a site like dpreview.com and looking at some of there camera comparisons. They tend to have articles on a given class of camera and compare many models. Also, there are many free tutorials on the net about how to use a camera. Lynda.com has some excellent courses.
The OP is trying to address a different issue. They already have a dedicated camera, but want to travel light and just use their Note 4. There are many reasons why someone with even a really great system may want to leave it behind and travel light. There are even creative reasons to do this. For example, you can pickup different images when you are basically invisible while using a smartphone. Pull out a huge DSLR and people begin to notice. Often a good compromise is a small mirrorless camera.
Regarding a mount, I couldn't recommend the Square Jellyfish any more highly: http://www.amazon.com/Square-Jellyf...d=1434851342&sr=1-2&keywords=square+jellyfish
Incredibly versatile and well-built.
As for a tripod, Monoprice has some excellent options, but not sure about the shipping cost to Canada. Re: Amazon's offerings, I would go for one of the several Joby-style "flexible leg" models. Again recommended due to versatility; prime ex. if there's no stable surface to set it on they can be wrapped around and "grip" a vertical pole (or pretty much anything) for a perfectly stable shot
Did you happen to find a lens kit for your Note 4? I'm looking, also, and am a little scared of what I'm finding so far. Thnx☺
Hello,
first, I'm happy i've found this forum, so many cool people discussing simply everything psosible about Android is great.
I'd really like to know your oppinion to this topic:
Do you think travelling with the premium smartphones of today (with full possible protection like cases and screen protectors) is nearly possible anymore?
If I look at the premium smartphones from right now: the S9, S8, LG G6, the iPhone X...
I see: smartphones with big displays, really small bezels and bodys totally out of glass!
Can a modern smartphone with the best cases and screen protectors be a relatively reliable partner on a travel or are they just 100% designed to look good?
If I look at for example the Galaxy S8 active, I see that beautiful design and functionality can harmonize together! Sadly there are nearly no active versions from other manufacturers at all and the S8 active is really rare.
Addition to the starting post
I don't want the main question of this topic (if modern smartphones can be taken on a travel anymore) to move into the background because of my personal question, that's why i'm not adding this into the starting post:
My story behind this is:
I'll probably go to Mexico for a longer time soon (that's a big thing belonging to where I live) and because I don't like carrying big cameras with me, I want to buy a good smartphone camera.
The problem is, that the best smartphone cameras are new smartphones (S8, S9, G6 etc.) and all of these have the extremely weak attributes I described above.
So the dilemma I am into now is:
Should I buy an older or cheaper smartphone with a relatively bad camera or should I risk to take a modern glass smartphone to Mexico, which could be destroyed after one drop?
Please take into consideration that this is my first post and I'm no native english speaker.
