[Q] Unable to get Google Location on LTE - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I can't seem to get a Google Location on Google Maps or ShowNearby (Singapore application) when using LTE (without GPS). Getting a location works fine when using using 3G or wifi (again without GPS). Getting a location on LTE (without GPS) also works fine the first time my phone is factory reset. Running Google Maps the second time leaves me unable to get a location again.
Anyone have the same problem? I'm wondering whether it's due to my local cellphone towers not being able to serve up a location while on LTE.
To replicate the issue, reboot and open Google Maps while on LTE and attempt to get a location.

Question regarding Google maps navigation

hi, i'm new to this forum.
i purchased a nexus one and im running it on ATT without edge (yet).
now i know that google navigation needs a connection through wifi or data to download the general directions, but does the gps service work through data also? i.e. does the gps connection cost money/ is done through the mobile carrier or is it a connection like a regular gps device that google provides free of charge?
I tried googling this first btw, but could find a clear answer.
thank you
The GPS itself doesn't use data, but loading the maps does.
You'd have to buy and download one of the GPS apps on the Market -- something that stores all the maps on your SD card. Google Maps and Google Navigation stream the maps to your phone through the data connection, so without a data connection you could find your coordinates (since the GPS still functions), but you'd have no idea where those coordinates are.
but the gps use is complementary? google provides the satellite connection for location free of charge?
I've had the gps tracking me while the phone was in airplane mode. I was using one of the GPS speedometers and it seemed to work. That was on my G1, haven't tried it on the nexus yet though.
GPS
GPS has nothing to do with Google or your carrier. GPS coordinate data is a free service provided by the US government to anyone with a compatible device. Like others are saying though, Google Navigation only caches a limited amount of map data on your route, not the whole thing so if you don't have a data connection, you need to buy a different app
i did not realize the US government provided gps services.
i must say i am very impressed by the nexus one a google so far.

GPS signal - source

Hello All,
OK, This will show you how out of the loop I am.
Purchased an HTC Touch Pro (via CL), phone to see how it would work as simply an GPS while riding the motorcycle all over creation this summer.
I was able to download Google maps(4.0) here at home & installed via WIFI. After installing I could not get any satellites to 'come in'. I enabled the phone part on the Touch, then the satellites (5) became available and did in fact show my location! I am not going to get an actual data plan for this phone FYI. My question is,were does the GPS satellites "come from"? I assume the only way this will function properly is to have an WIFI connection? That being said, how does the regular 'car gps's' get their signal driving down the road?
Is the gps radio signal independent of both the wifi & data signals, I guess is what I am asking? Why would I have had to enable the phone/ON for the satellites to show up,when I do not have a data plan? Maybe just an inherit setup for the gps radio, config?
Thanks,
Barry

you can use GPS for free, you don't need to have a wifi connection or any other data connection
accountabc,
Thanks for the link! I was 'hoping' this is how the gps thing shook down. I figured there would have to be a catch to were I would have to have a data plan on the U S Cellular enabled HTC Touch Pro. This is going to work out just as I had hoped! No GPS hanging off of the handlebars, being a target for thieves every time i get away from the bike!!!.
Suweeeet!!!
Now if I can read it while tooling around the switchbacks???,,,Yikes...
take Care,
Barry
accountabc,
I had a brilliant idea,to test the viability of my Google Maps working without an Data or WIFI connection. I unplugged my Access point here. Tried opening Google Maps on the HTC Touch Pro, and get the 'connecting' dialouge at the top right of GM's. It finally times out with saying" A data connection is required for this app". I tried going into the setting of the "external gps" and took off the 'automatically configure' and set the com ports several different ways to no avail.
This phone does have the latest ROM that U S Cellular provides. I may have to try and start hacking with some other ROM's to see if an 'unlocked' ROM may circumvent this problem? Although I have had this phone for almost two months I have just started getting acclimated with it ,the last 2 days.
I'll do some more searching here to see if someone does in fact have a workaround for this? It does seem the GPS radio should do the grunt work. I am just not sure about the Google Maps needed to be updated dynamically with a net connection?
Thanks again,
Barry
why not use something like garmin xt which doesn't require a data conenction since all the maps are on a sd card

Updated Google Maps not updating my location

Anybody having this problem?
I recently updated Google Maps to Version: 4.5.0 (#4519). I didn't change anything to my Location or Privacy settings. This new version doesn't update my location (when I hit the dot on the upper right). Any possible fix or workaround to this in settings? Or is this a bug in the new update? I only have the Use Wireless Networks checked and usually that's enough to give me an approximate location. Still, Google Maps (and Latitude) shows that I'm my phone is at home when I have it here in my office 9 miles away.
I'm running that version for a while ago (or I think because mine has the location on top) and I'm having no problem at all

I'm having the same issue in San Diego (Mission Valley) trying to access my location via the 3G or Edge wireless network. It works fine using Wifi or GPS if I can get a GPS lock. The funny thing is I tried it up in Carmel Mountain Ranch and I was able to get my location via the 3G wireless network. I also flashed back to the stock rom and tried the original Google Maps and it has the same issue now as the latest version. There must be a problem with AT&T network in our area.
Hey! I'm also in Mission Valley (work)! Something is up in the Mission Valley area, most def. College Area is ok, Mira Mesa, Lindbergh Field (places I've tried recently). Mission Vally is in the twilight zone.
It must be something with the cell towers.
Check your location now. Mine shows me at my office building with just the cell networks.

Still not working. I've downloaded the new Google Maps and it does say that some cell towers aren't actively sending or receiving MyLocation data. It wants us to use GPS or WiFi for a more accurate MyLocation position. Bleh.

[Q] Gps / location services

Sorry I couldn't find the exact match with my issue so I thought of creating a new thread.
I updated my Xperia Neo ROM but I'm having difficulties with GPS/LOCATON service. It works fine on a 3G network but it couldn't load my location whenever I am connected to a wifi network. I've tried using different apps on my phone but still wouldn't work. It just keeps on searching/loading.
It used to work fine before with stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM/KERNEL. Is switching back the only fix? Please help. :crying:
I have the same issue, gps location is not working for my new rom either (unoffical jellaxy cymod 10 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1875015) is there a fix/patch to flash??!

GPS on wifi is now working on my NEO. I think it's my wifi connection or just my area.
A possible cause and fix

Remember that Android has 3 different location services:
Real GPS, this requires only the ability to "see" the sky where the GPS locations are flying over your head, plus up to 15 minutes to download the weekly schedule of where they are flying (the 15 minute download can be replaced by a 5 second web download, but you will still need the 1.5 to 3 minute download of latest updates). Additionally, it may waste a few extra minutes looking for the wrong satellites if it things you are in a different part of the world than you are (this depends on the rom, radio firmware and GPS chip).
Cell tower location service: This sends the number of the nearest 2G/3G/4G to an online service which looks up where that tower is, giving a rough location.
Wi-Fi access point location service: This sends the name and/or MAC address of the nearest Wi-Fi access point to a Google service, which returns where other users were last time they saw that Wi-Fi access point with GPS on and Google Maps Wi-Fi location sharing on.
From this I guess one of 2 things are wrong:
:silly:Your Wi-Fi network is not in Google's database (unlikely since it was recognized with your previous firmware).
The option to share Wi-Fi location data with Google maps is off after the update, :fingers-crossed:try turning it off, then on.

Apps can't use location services

Hello, widgets, maps and other apps cannot use location. All services running, stock rom, all options checked, usung wifi only, no 3g, no gps. When I try to set few things for google maps via settings/google account/maps and location maps crashes. Other apps say cannot locate or location is unavailable until set by myself.
Same thing happens on my tablet and two phones. On the phones although location is working via 3g and cellular data.
