[Q] White HOX users, how's the 'white' holding up? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Just curious how you guys are keeping the white back of the phone clean. I bought a white HOX a few days ago and absolutely love it (came from a droidx). Rooted, unlocked, and on cleanrom, and I have to say it makes my old x seem like something from the '80s. Only problem I"m having is keeping it clean. The screen isn't a problem (or at least one I'm used to with touchscreen phones) but the white back keeps turning brown or w/e when I goto use it when I'm working on my jeep and what not. I know I should probably clean my hands a bit better buts its a PITA to clean them completely off just to check what a text says. So far a little saliva and a microfiber towel has cleaned it up nicely, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or advice on other products I can use to clean when it gets dirty without damaging or turning the plastic yellow or something.
And no I am not using a case or screen protector, never had one on my x and after two years it still looks like new, I'm a believer in this fancy dancy gorilla glass lol.
So again, I'm not looking for advice on how to keep it clean, but how to clean it I guess. I hate to use some simple green or something and have it eat away the finish or something
Thanks!

yeah I've been having similar issues, I want to try a clorox wipe but have a feeling it will make it yellow

mine's pretty clean. but i'm a neat freak, and that's a totally different story..
what works for me is a mix of diluted rubbing alcohol. slap some of that on a cottonball/swab and just clean. wiping down afterwards with a microfiber cloth.

mine started getting a little dirty/discolored.
I had some screen cleaner and a micro fiber cloth at work, and just wiped it down.
completely white again.

Mines almost perfect, aside from a tiny black mark, but I use a case with mine.

I suggest waterproofing the phone, just send it in to that company that does it, I'm sure that stuff will protect against stains and oils as well as the water.
Sent from my HTC One X

I use windex, couple squirts on a soft paper towel and any grime comes right off.
Owned a white blackberry and its looked just as good 3 years later using this method.

I appreciate the input very much guys, thanks! Some good ideas here.
I wonder if I could put a coat of wax (like that nxt tech wax) over the back of the phone, I imagine if it went on well it would hold up nicely.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations on a place to get it waterproofed?

Ummm interesting.
I use MrClean Magic Eraser. Doesn't leave any stains, or residue on the back it works great and it's safe.

Does that scratch it?

No it doesn't scratch it. As Mr Clean magic eraser are non abrasive.

That's what I read, ive never used one though. they remind me of the sandpaper sponge things you use for drywall work so I just picture it scratching the he'll out of it lol

They are an abrasive just a light one over time you will probably polish the phone.

I dont have any suggestions for cleaning methods, but jsut wanted to chime in to say that I've been using mine 4 about 6 weeks and it's stain-free. I do wash my hands quite a bit and have encountered a couple situations where I chose not to use the phone until I cleaned my hands. I did inadvertently get chocolate on the back once, and noticed about a half hour later, but the smudge cleaned up pretty neatly with a damp paper towel. Overall, I'm quite impressed with how well this white back has held up. The matte finish is smoothing a little where I commonly grip the phone, but far less than I anticipated.

There's a thread about this already but I'll chime in have had the white one x since May 4th never had a case on it and mine still looks fantastic I've used Windex, Clorox disinfecting wipes, citrus surface cleaner, water, dish soap, spit, and my personal favorite baby wipes none of the above have ever discolored my phone and all have done the job.

Thanks guys that's really good to hear. I'm sure you know what I was referring to when I said about the white finish seeming like it'd 'soak up' stains, I got some ink on mine today (I run a 4 color printing press), hit it with some blanket wash and it came off looking like new.
I tried searching twice, do you have a link to the other thread you were talking about?
Thanks again guys

I had a blue case on mine for a while and took it off yesterday to find the whole back of the phone blue. how do i remove this blueness?

As a phone of raw denim, my white is pretty much completely blue.

I doubt you can. This kind of plastic absorbs stains and can be next to impossible to clean once that happens. You can probably remove some of it off, but most of the blue tint is likely permanent.
You might try a 10% bleach solution and see if it helps.

Kept mine in a TPU case since last year...still as white as when I unboxed it.

Invisibleshield messes up Nexus One?

i have been reading on this forum and it seems to have been messing up a lot of people's nexus ones. i have ordered mine last week n should come in any day now. im just wondering if this is really true or if it just happened to a few unfortunate people....i dont wanna mess up my nexus one cuz its rooted so that means no warranty
how does it mess it up?
Yeah, I'm wondering that too. I lurk the forums every day and I don't remember reading anything like that.
could he be talking about the teflon coating peeling off if you peel off hte invisiblesheld?
Personaly i didn't like invisible shield had it on my hero but the color didn't come off when i take it off.
anyways like to see pictures from people who had this.
I was just about to go get this today...
I've got the full body and hasn't messed up mine. I like quite a bit. The pieces aren't cut the greatest to cover the device completely though.
For me it didn't mess it up, just looked like CRAP.
I've used them on other devices and they've looked fine, I think the N1 screen is just too good.
I peeled it off 3 days after putting it on.
All i have is the screen protector but i haven't had any problems with it. Color is fine and no peeling
I have the full body skin. The skin got a dent so I went back for the free replacement. Pulled the old one off with no problems or issues. Not messed up for me.
I have tried the invisibleshield, the bodyguardz and www.bestskinsever.com and I have to say bestskinsever ain't lying. They go on the easiest, stay on the longest without peeling and don't change colors. The invisbleshield was the worst. I always had the edges peel up or not lay right and after a while it started to change color. (the skin-not the phone) It would turn a brownish color. bestskinsever are the cheapest also at only $8 for the full body + S&H. It doesn't come with solution or a squeegee like the others do but it comes with directions and it has been the best skin for me. I have it on my N1 and my ipod touch.
bestskinsever...cut me a check biotches! lol
I've had the invisibleshield on mine for awhile now and it still looks great. No problems at all.
Maybe putting too much of the solution gets into the cracks of the nexus causing water damage?
I only have a screen protector it it works and looks fine. I carefully wiped up the excess solution with a cloth.
Water DMG
well 2nd day i got my nexus i put it on, it looks great unless in the sun. got water in the cracks and the touch screen response is pretty bad.
and i dont know if i can it replaced?? its rooted so yeah....

IE: Don't do it like this guy and you'll be fine....
I've put BSE's on many devices, you don't put the skin on wet, you shake the heck out of it THEN put it on.. It's just damp, just enough to move around. If it takes more than a few minutes for it to stick down on the flat surfaces, it was too wet.

Water Damage
I was having a lot of trouble a while back with my trackball not working. Long story short- I got soaked in a storm with the nexus in my pocket, like uber-soaked. My trackball wasn't working, so I figured it must be water damage. Btw, the nexus was very wet in my pocket, like fureal. My touchscreen was fine. To make the trackball work, I took a towel and put it on the trackball and rolled it around, and then also did the same while actually pushing down on the trackball. I did this for a couple of minutes, and then it was back to normal. I really don't think invisible shield solution will damage your phone that much. Just be careful with it, and it should be fine. While putting it on, keep a towel with you and wipe access. Don't worry too much.
Desktop Dock Issues
I put the invisibleshield on my Nexus One basically immediately after I purchased the phone in January. As far as the phone goes, I saw no problems whatsoever, but when I purchased the Desktop dock, I found that the invisibleshield changed the dimensions of the phone just enough to prevent the contacts on the phone from aligning with the contact on the dock, so I had to peel it off.
Not sure if that has anything to do with the problems posted, but that's just what I found.

I have a BSE skin on mine..I don't have to Desktop Dock but I have to Cardock and it fits in perfectly with the skin on it. I've had Invisibleshield and BodyGuardz on my Nexus and BSE is by far the best skin I've put on my phone.

I love BSE's, I have 'em on everything... except my Nexus. I guess I'm just paranoid.. While the BSE's have several times for me in the past prevented scratches from minor drops on various MP3's or phones, I think (hope!) my Boxwave Crystal Pure Slip case would protect a bit more by giving some cushion to the device if it does fall.
Even that said, I'm still debating on getting a BSE for the N1. When done carefully, they look great and if kept clean, keep a nice grip and stick nicely to things like a pant leg in the car or such, vs sliding around and winding up in the back seat like my N1 did several times when I first got it

Painting my Nexus One ((in progress))

Well I got seriously bored of the Battery cover and bottom piece. I was just never a fan of the bronze like tint to it.
I initially started with the Ol Touch Pro battery cover method using Rit Dye.
The results were great but it started running leaving my hands tinted =-(.
I placed an order for paint which arrived but was the wrong finish so Im awaiting the return shipment.
In the meantime I went ahead and started on the Battery Cover/Bottom panel with some left over paint I already had.
Im using Krylon Fusion but I may regret not switching to Duplicolor as there bonding is to plastics may be better. Im worried that the teflon coating of the pieces may mess up the finish.
Removing the bottom panel is a PAIN unless you have a pry tool. I highly suggest going to Ifixit.com and order a few of there tools if you make a habit of pryin open phones/electronics. They help out a bunch.
http://www.ifixit.com/Tools/Plastic-Opening-Tools/IF145-000
This is what I used for bottom panel.
Second problem was the little metal contacts. Fortunately I have no intention of getting a dock. They are too small to duct tape and was worried about removing them. If they are removable I may just do it after as scraping the paint off copper shouldnt be a big deal.
Masking the camera is a pain as the metal circle doesnt give one an indent to xacto blade smoothly. It was a bit of trial and error but definitely doable.
Anyways pics of coat one below. I wont continue until I get the right sandpaper and paint finish. Still tossed up between gloss and matte.
This was my original goal.

I really like the black covers and the way it now matches the front paneling. I may not rip the rest apart to paint it white just yet.
Much prefer stock compared to that to be honest.
I know you're not done but the finish doesn't look to great.
Yeah the finish is nowhere near done. But the contrast the black creates is just alot better.
Already had someone ask me what phone I'm using ... in 11 months that's only happened twice.
Hopefully it'll look the way I intend it to.
wet sand, wet sand, wet sand
also make sure to use super high grit paper.
dont be afraid to wet sand the clear coat either...its necessary to keep it glossy with out any orange peel
ewwwwwwwwww

Thanks for tip about the clear coat.
Already ran into some trouble as the paint doesnt seem to adhere as good as I thought. I went at it without adhesion promoter..may have to hit the do over if it doesnt settle well.

Did you sand the pieces before painting?
Your paint is going to fall off if you didn't.
It's the entire idea behind teflon coatings.
A little painters trick. Next time don't try to tape off the contacts (or any small area) just get a toothpick and some Vaseline. Put the Vaseline on the contacts then paint. After you are done just wipe clean.
Also watch your flash time between coats. Believe it to not wet paint doesn't bond to dry paint that well. You first coat should still be a little tacky when applying your second coat.

Only a light sanding. I did the same with the G1 and had zero issues (I did use adhesion promoter with that one though). Nexus one must have super super teflon.

Great tip.
I actually tried that with Elmers but vaseline would be MUCH easier for the tiny spots.
I may have let it dry too long. I normally have only painted in warm weather months so I can let it sit longer. With the cold weather it seems I have to reduce time between coats.
BTW
How many coats of clear coat is recommended ?
I only had my G1 a few months after painting when I sold it. If I plan to keep the N1 for longer ((no trackball or leds on Nexus S *sigh* Im looking for more durability.))
I recall reading on another forum where someone skipped clear coat altogether and put a zagg/BSE ever on top and it looked great after over a year of usage.
I would prefer spending $15 on full back black available on ebay rather than painting, it doesnt look smooth and highly finished.

Cant stand the extra bulk.
Anyways..
Had to go back and sand everything off to get all the teflon removed.
What a pain.
I did the bottom piece over much improved. Battery cover will have to wait till after turkey day.

There's a couple of people selling black battery covers/antenna bottoms on ebay. With htc/google logo and all.
heres some pics of my painted nexus.. decided to paint it while waiting for replacement digitizer and lcd came in.. one coat primer -> lite sanding -> 2 coats rustoleum flat white -> lite wet sand (just to knock off some of the orange peel) -> 2 coat clear matte rustoleum (not a fan of glossy finishes) -> wet sand.. was going to do the battery/bottom, but am not sold on paint holding up well to that rubber.. will probably end up buying the black ones of ebay later on..
famandeggs, your Nexus looks amazing. Excellent job.

thanks man, will do.. it was a frustrating process lol.. i first tried a gloss enamel gloss paint, but the cure times where a pain (48 hours), and im all thumbs (dropped it a couple times while it was still drying, or wet sanded it to far down exposing the aluminum, forcing me to start over).. eventually just went w/a normal paint, im hoping w/the clear it'll hold up

Rubberized Battery Cover Mod

Like most of us that keep no cover on our phone, my battery plate was all scratched to heck. I saw the other "mirror polish" mod and it looked great, but also looked like a lot of work and would get scratched again. I bought a can of rubberized spray (see pic) and wound up with a great result (see pic.) The only color Home Depot had was black, and I think a gray might have looked better, but I still like the results and the phone is less slippery now than with the metal cover. This took 3 coats (30 minutes drying time between coats) then I let it dry for 18 hours before using it. Turned out pretty good, but long-term results are TBD...
I like did u just spray the back part? Any trouble with fitting it afterwards as it must add a layer of bulk?

It added less bulk than I thought it would, it's really not much at all and it fits just fine afterwards. Actually, before, it would slide like a little when locked in place (just enough to notice - probably like .1 mm or so.) Now it is snug and has no jiggle at all.
I forgot to mention the hard part (prepping it...) Removing the original clear plastic coating was the hardest part - a combination of a dremel with the little wire wheel tool and my fingernail took about an hour, then I just hit it with some 220 grit sandpaper and cleaned it with mineral spirits.
I use the same stuff on my car (mid level 2009 Lancer but use the Plasti-dip to black out the front to make it look like an Evo [car guys will understand =p]) Very durable though I have not used it on my DZ yet. You beat me to the punch! I want to do the HTC part in red and the rest in black, will post when I have the time to do it.
Looks sharp though, contrast is nice
Doh! After only 1 day, I caught something on the curved edge and it started lifting the plastic coating... not very durable for this use - I might try again later though and see if I can come up with a better method.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I like it! A little bit rougher texture, but you might try Duplicolor spray on bedliner.
I thought about taking my phone apart and using some white plastidip to change it white...
Durability is alright...on thinkpad forums, a couple of people mixed it with some black enamel paint which made it much more durable.

I thought I was the only one who noticed the battery door wiggle room! No one ever mentions it. I really hope you find some way of preventing it from peeling. I'm practically drooling over those pictures you took. It looks extremely professional compared to most mods I've seen. You could easily set up a service where people send you their doors, some cash, and a self address envelope if you wanted to make some extra bucks.

I've been meaning to update this. I tried again - this time I sanded with 220 grit, used a "self-etching primer" on the cover, then the rubberized paint. This time it lasted 3 days before starting to peel off... I'm also able to scratch off the primer with my fingernails, so the primer didn't really help. I'm not sure what else to try to make this coating stick at this point.

Powder coating would be nice, but I don't have the equipment for that (and don't want to invest in it just for this.) Also, this cover has plastic tabs that I'd be worried about melting or detaching from the battery cover during the curing process.

Permanent screen grease caused by KFC / toothpaste - should I try rubbing alcohol?

Since last week I've suddenly been plagued by a filthy layer of grease accross the screen of my phone. It covers about 80% of the screen surface with just a few areas towards the edges where it doesn't reach.
No matter how many times I think I've wiped it off, as soon as I begin touching the phone again, it quickly reappears. It has a somewhat cloudy / misty appearance with a tendency to accentuate normal fingerprint and grease marks ten fold compared to previous. It looks disgusting and is seriously spoiling my enjoyment of the phone.
It began towards the end of our recent holiday. I've got two guesses as to what may have caused it. The first possibility is having immediately touched the screen with dirty hands after eating a KFC chicken meal (very greasy). The other is a somewhat vague recollection of accidentally slobbering a drop of toothpaste onto it late one evening, which if I'm correct may have damaged the materials within the screen?
I've become very frustrated with the way it looks and am beginning to contemplate some drastic measures in attempt to clean it.
I'm considering using isopropyl alcohol. I know a lot of people warn against it but on the whole the evidence I've found suggests many have used it previously without encountering any noticeable problems. Even on modern smartphones with digitisers like ours.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as its driving me crazy seeing my phone like this and a simple dry micro fibre cloth has proved insufficient to clear it permanently.
Id love to help but never faced such a situation usually when i eat some mcdonalds and touch the screen i can notice the grease and all that but after i use a wiping cloth and it does the job

Yeah I'm starting to think that the toothpaste theory is how it actually happened. It's resembling a similar appearance to what my old Nokia 5800 went like after I naively attempted to remove a scratch from it's screen using toothpaste. Very murky and almost powdery looking dirt that refused to go away.
It's as though the grease is 'locked in' to the screen. I can wipe the screen and temporarily everything appears back to normal again. That is until a few minutes into using it once more that it goes back to looking like someone has thrown it into the chip pan!

i've used rubbing alcohol and it's worked fine. You can try peroxide i think ( i haven't tried peroxide...)
usually a microfiber cloth does the trick. Make sure your fingers are clean when you use it again, your hands have a lot of oil on them...
That has got to be one of the best topic titles I've read on this site.
i was imagining a scenario where you accidentally tipped your chicken into toothpaste instead of hot sauce and somehow a piece of toothpaste chicken fell onto your phone
Lol title! Use glasses cleaner and a microfiber cloth!

Smudges on new phone

Hi I got my U12+ just last friday. It wasn't until a couple of days later that I noticed what look like dirty smudges on the back of the phone, and they won't come off. At some angles the phone looks beautifully shiney, but at a few angles, these smudges really show up, some around the camera, around most edges, and a strange 1cm square to the bottom-right of the c (i.e near the htc logo).
I bought the phone from a main street retailer; the box was shrink-wrapped, everything inside it pristine, earphones all unopened, etc, so it does not seem to have been tampered with.
So I wonder if this is just some sloppy manufacturing? I've got two photos, one where I have highlighted with a yellow line the areas that I'm talking about. (And the red line is a reflection of my htc 10 I took the photo with; sorry about the spotlight reflection.) The smudges look more obvious when holding the phone (i.e worse than I can show in the photo).
The more I look at it, the more it makes me think this is from excess glue or sealant around the camera area; and along the sides, looks like it's where they've wiped extra glue off when they glued the back? The weirdest bit is the square mark.
I feel I'm being really fussy and would not return it just because of this (and because I'm in New Zealand, where probably very few htc are ever sold, I'd probably be in for a world of pain doing a return). But I'd like to remove the marks if possible.
Has anyone seen anything similar? Or know how to remove marks like this?
What can I use to clean the back? All the talk about this phone says 'glass front and back', but neither of them feels like glass. The back feels (and sounds, if you tap it with a fingernail) like a hard polymer/plastic; is that what it is?
Thanks!

I've kept my back protected with ultra-clear PhantomSkinz so I wouldn't know. And it still looks absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks - in fact I ordered one of these phantomskinz 2 days ago after I saw your positive reviews about it!! So I am holding you responsible
However, the smudges on my phone were already there, 'out of the box', so no chance to protect it when it started out that way...
I am hoping that this skin is going to be such a nice body hugging layer that it hides some of these blemishes.

How long have you owned it? If it's before 30 days I would return it. That is not normal.
I wonder if the smudges are on the inside. Maybe from when it was assembled.

Yes I am tempted to... but as mentioned in my original post, I'm at the end of the world here, I know the store does not have any more in stock... so to return it could be a right P.I.T.A. I can't be without a phone while I wait for a replacement.
I guess I'll go talk to them tomorrow.
What about the material the back is made out of? (I.e as I mentioned, it does not feel like glass to me; more like a polymer.)
If it does feel like glass to others, then I wonder if I got an early run or prototype version where instead of glass they used plastic (which could explain the marking).
Well this is very embarrassing. I'd tried various things to clean the smudges, but not used any chemicals (which is why I was wondering what it is made of).
I showed it to a workmate - without saying a word she picked up some magic cloth from the photocopier, wiped my phone... marks gone.
What the....?
I'll go back to the rock I obviously deserve to live under.

It is definitely made of gorilla glass 3...maybe that's why it feels different. Front and back are gorilla glass 3. And if it would be plastic or so, it would be different. If you can scratch it with your finger nails or so, you will know it ?

Looks like the glass coating problem that I had with the U11. Contacted customer support, and they offered me a replacement device. Started off with the sapphire blue, exchanged for a solar red.
Luckily have had no such problems with my translucent blue U12 yet.
