Cant use 4ext recovery!!! - HTC Sensation

i followed the following guide to s-off my htc sensation xe:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661631
i did it successfully, so now i wanted before i flash a custom rom, install the 4ext recovery updater. installing the app itself works, but i cant use it. it says i need to use busybox first. ok, downloaded 2 different busybox apps/installers from the market and they fail to run with the message "you need to have your device rooted first".
now im like: ARE YOU ****ING KIDDING ME?!
i would love to install a rooted-rom on my device but first i need obviously entering a mode where i actually CAN install a custom rom, which i can only do by running 4ext recovery.... loop....
please: a quick hint what i need to do next. i wanna finish this this evening. thanks.

can anyone help please?

did you do the second part of the the guide?
STEPS:
1.get the new root tool from root-sensation-zip
2.extract the zip
3.remove the files adb.exe, AdbWinApi.dll , AdbWinUsbApi.dll (if you dont have any adb/fastboot setup dont delete these and skip step 4 )
4.copy the rest of files to the folder that you have extracted from temproot-sensation-windows.zip which you have downloaded during SOFF procedure
(if you have adb/fastboot setup then to adb folder)
5.connect your device normally (from lock screen or home screen) to pc (NOTE: avoid usb hubs and usb 3.0 ports while connecting ..just connect the device directly to pc/laptop)
6.double click on root.bat file ...wait until root is success and once success message "EVERYTHING DONE..ROOT SUCCESS...ONE FINAL REBOOT NOW" pops out without any errors...you are rooted completely

Why don't you flash 4EXT recovery manually from fastboot?
Here step 2 from this guide (only step 2 don't even touch step 3)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861
But first make sure that you have juopunutBear at the top when you go to bootloader.. Otherwise if you got locked let me know.

Use the one click root tool present in the soff guide (link in my signature)
To root the phone
(check root using root check basic application.. And if root fails (which I highly doubt it) run the one clock root again)
Edit: did you try to enter 4EXT via app? Nooo you need to go to bootloader and then select recovery from there.. And then you will enter recovery and from there you can flash custom rom
Also there is a way to say thanks in xda

sorry. your one click root tool only works on windows and im using ubuntu.
i have tried everything and afaik there just is no way to get the htc sensation xe with 1.27.0000 hboot s-off to root without either having to install windows (no option for me) .....
i found a file which would give me permanent root, but it only works for android 2.3.6......
and without root i dont need to install a custom rom. i better then stay with the original sense, i like, and wait till maybe the community finds a new method.

Dude you are completely getting it wrong here.. For custom recovery to work and to flash custom rom.. There is no requirement of root at all (heck root is a property of rom...)
When you said flash done.. I assumed it is success.. So you can easily boot to recovery and can flash a custom rom from there...
Also the bat file I had is pretty simple.. You can open it and can manually enter each command.. I could give you a Linux one.. But right now I'm on mobile
But Mark my words.. For flashing/using recovery and custom rom
. There is no f****ing requirement of root
Edit: oi you are saying your hboot Is 1.27.0000
Then you are having locked bootloader Then no way the flash of recovery via fastboot works....
Please confirm me this too.. Whether you got any error when you flashed the recovery.img (like remote not allowed)

Ok. You are right. I could boot into recovery mode and flash a custom ROM from there. But why I want root? To change the clock of the CPU or to use adblock for example to only name two...
Edit: flashing recovery image gave no errors at all

[Q] How to root 2.3.5 sense 3.0,but just root

I want to root my DS to use some apps that require it. how can i do it ?
i want just root, while runing the official rom. can it be done ? thank you.
You'll need s-off, which can be acheived via htcdev.com Then, flash recovery and then the Superuser zip. That's the only way to root 2.3.5
Seems I'm missing something here. I got the HTCDev S-off. Bootloader is now unlocked. Now I want the phone rooted. I installed ROM Manger and tried to install ClockworkMod Recovery but the program keeps telling me on startup that I need to have Superuser installed. When trying to install Recovery download starts but I get an error message loosely translated "error while executing privileged command"
I also downloaded the superuser Rom from the clockworkmod homepage but I don't exactly know what to do with it. Rooting the first HTC Desire was much easier
I'd appreciate any help
Thanks

You are manually going to have to flash ClockworkMod from fastboot mode. As you have discovered, you cannot use ROM Manager to install CWM.

Ok. thanks. as far as I remember I need an *.img file for that which I have to place in the sd-card main folder. The superuser rom I downloaded is a zip file. Where do I get the *.img file? thx again
no, you need a recovery.img. Then flash that and flash the SuperUser ZIP through recovery.
Got that. Thx. And WHERE can I get recovery.img? Found one with Google however I don't know if there are different ones for different phones. Thx
Since when has the desire s been supported by htc dev
Links to threads with cwm recovery or the superior 4ext recovery are in the index thread on the desire s development forum
Say you download the 4ext recovery zip, you can then extract the recovery img file out of it

It is not 'officially' listed on the htcdev site, however, the locked HBOOT 2.00.0002 can be unlocked using the procedure that is listed on the htcdev site.

Thanks a lot. That did the trick. Desire S is rooted and Titanium Backup works now.
I'd like to know for future reference how you flashed the image. Can you use android flasher after s-off to do this? (i used rom manager method)
well, for now i just s-off-ed using htcdev.com .
next i was trying to figure out how to root, what steps.i've read the dedicated thread , but it helps me not . can you just point out the next steps ? rooting for dummies pls
Ok. It's rather easy. After using htcdev's method to S-Off the HBOOT, I downloaded the 4extrecovery_v2.1.0_saga.zip file from the 4ext homepage and extracted recovery.img from the archive onto my hard drive.
Then I started the phone in fastboot mode, connected it via USB to the notebook (don't forget USB debugging) and used fastboot.exe to flash recovery.img from my Windows notebook via a command line (cmd). Then I started 4ext recovery from fastboot mode on the Desire S and flashed the Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip file I had also downloaded from 4ext homepage and had copied in the main directory of my sd-card. reboot phone and you're done.
In case you need a tutorial for flashing via fastboot look here:

Thanks to all for helping

Once you are hboot unlocked, you can install a custom recovery and then install the su binary and superuser app to gain root access. Then you can use Titanium backup.

I have a similar question to the OP's one.
I want to root my Desire S so as I can use more apps, how do I go about doing this?
From reading around it seems to be like this:
1. Unlock Bootloader
2. Flash Custom Recovery such as 4Ext
3. Flash su file
4. Install superuser app
Would these be the correct steps to take and give me root acess?
(Edit: If possible, can someone post the exact steps needed for flashing the custom recovery and su file? I'm not exactly sure as to how to go about doing this)
Anyone? I have already unlocked my bootloader, but I still am not sure it the rest of the steps I have posted are correct (or even how to go about doing them).

[Q] How to install 4EXT Recovery

I currently have Endymion V3.3 rom installed. I went through the revolutionary process to get root. I currently have the revolutionary cwm recovery installed. I tried installing 4EXT updater but when I went to recovery I still got revolutionary cwm recovery. Also I did a backup with this recovery, would I be able to use it when I install 4EXT. Thanks

All you need to do is to
1. Download and install 4EXT Recovery Updater, and launch it.
2. It will ask for root access, which you must grant.
3. After granting it root access you can use it to download and flash 4EXT Recovery. You must have an internet connection for this.
4. The recovery updater app will now download 4EXT Recovery and flash it on your device, replacing the older CWM Recovery you have currently, it's that simple.
No complicated steps... just like running an app.
As for using backups made with 4EXT, yes you will be able to use them. 4EXT is 100% backward compatible with CWM Recovery. Even the location of your backups remains unchanged (in the folder sdcard/clockworkmod/backups)
Go ahead, try the steps i outlined above. Then let us know if you hit any problem (very unlikely though!)

Hey, i have a bit of trouble...
Just followed your guide to install 4ext recovery but the **** wont work...
I have downloaded the updater apk and installed it, i granted superuser access, then i pressed (in the application) "Online install | upgrade" then chose the latest recovery package and pressed install.
After that has been done it says: "Successfully flashed new recovery. Recovery.img was saved to sdcard/..." but later when i reboot to mine recovery i still have the freakin CWM 2.5.0.3 or something installed... WHAT am i doing wrong..?

See the above posts.... this method works flawlessly. But if for some reason you're unable to update from CWM, just download the attached file, boot into CWM recovery, and flash this zip from within recovery.
Alternately, you can also download the attached Android Flasher and flash the recovery (extract the recovery.img from the zip file) using it. It's a fast and simple method to do it.
I'm feeling extra helpful today, so i'll type out another method... Use fastboot (i assume you know how to set it up, otherwise look at my signature for link) to flash the recovery using the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
DOWNLOADS:
Android Flasher
4EXTRecovery_v2.2.7_RC5_Flashable.zip
The recovery attached is not the touch version, its the most stable non-touch version. Once you are on it, you can later use the Recovery Control app to upgrade to the touch version.
Hope this will solve your problem.
If your phone has the latest HBOOT and unlocked with htcdev.com then you must use the fastboot flash method as exlained above.
But for Revolutionary the regular app method should work just fine.

Word of friendly advice : You shouldn't go around asking for help in forums for other devices as you may end up flashing something that could bugger up your phone... There is a HUGE difference between the Desire S and the Desire. Don't go by the similarity in their names... We're a very helpful bunch over here at the DS forums, but i would kindly request you to take this query to your own community which i'm sure will help you sort it out. (Or grab a Desire S and start roaming these lands!! ) - just kidding.
Better still, why not PM madmaxx82 and ask the creator himself regarding 4EXT issues.

[Q] Help, boot loop here?

I wanted to flash to ARHD 6.3
This is my first time.. I managed to S off.. But then the bootloop began after I flashed PG58IMG.zip via fastboot.
Step 1. To S-OFF your Sensation - (You do not need to do this if you have S-off already or done this before) - WORKING NOW for TMOUS users
Visit
download the application for your operating System. AND EXTRACT IT TO A FOLDER
YOU MAY NEED TO DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM- Norton is flagging up Revolutionary as a Virus when it isn't
IMPORTANT
Fill out the form under the download links with your OS, Device, Hboot Version and Serial number. This will give your beta key to enable you to S - OFF. Make a note of this.
How To get your Hboot Version - 3 methods below
1. [/url] and if it has found your device it should read
"Found your Device: HTC Sensation Z710* Applications -> Development)
4. With the phone switched on (not in HBOOT, just the regular home screen), plug in your USB cable and select HTC sync mode.(IGNORE any warning messages on your phone telling you it cannot find HTC Sync )
5. Launch revolutionary.exe. It should detect the phone and ask for your beta key. Type it (BE CAREFUL, as its case sensitive) or copy and paste it in.
If Revolutionary fails to find your phone verify you have all the drivers installed, try disk drive mode or charging mode (Linux users can use disk drive mode. Confirmed to be working by others)
6. Once you have entered your beta key correctly, follow any on screen prompts or actions from revolutionary and wait for it to S-Off,
7. You're done. Your Device will Successfully have S-OFF....if it hangs on method 3 and doesn't S-Off. See post 2 below for solutions.
IF REVOLUTIONARY SAYS FAILED YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED. Go back and check hboot using the methods above. some users are told its failed and they still have S off now. If you have S-off your hboot will now be 1.17.1011 and revolutionary will tell you now your device is not supported
8. Revolutionary will now ask you to Install clockwork recovery mod after S OFF. Type N and install it manually below (the recovery provided is v4.0.1.4 doesn't charge when device is switched off, the one below v5.0.0.1 does charge)
9. Your Device now is S-off.

oh i've read that as well so i have deleted it manually by using sd adapter.. then reinserted it back n tried to boot normally.. but to no avail.. what's the root cause of this eh?
when i gained s off, i still can boot into my ROM.. however disaster happens when i flashed the .zip files obtained as per instructions..
oh but directly after i've flashed it, i didn't remove the .zip files n tried to immediately reboot into ROM.. does this make a difference?

good question..
immediately after s off, i boot into my ROM and tried to install busybox and other apps that requires superuser or root but failed and stating that my device was still not rooted..
so i proceed to install a recovery (in this case its ext4 recovery) but failed to find a .zip installer (but managed to find the .apk and .img version but afraid to proceed considering the extension wasn't the same as per guide's PG5...ZIP). so i tried to simply install cwm as per stated in the guide. coz i know after recovery is installed, only then i would be able to install the su zip files.
then it boot looped.. n here we are trying to shoot all of these troubles.. XD
and if my understanding was wrong, pls correct me. thanks!
only after you sent me the links i managed to install ext4 recovery via a much easier method using cmd.exe..
n that also means that i wasn't even able to follow through the supercid part of the guide..

wait a moment, i dont know if things are making more sense to me but, is it possible that this was caused by a wrong firmware? i just figured out my cid and its htc_044 and there are 4 different version of firmware for this cid, so should i try each of it until my phone boots to my original ROM?
Update: Oh God, I'm in such a relief! Thank God it works now. I flashed the firmware 1.17 n now am able to boot back into my ROM. Now i'm gonna get things backed up n will proceed. phew thanks so much for helping me out. The cause was maybe the zip files werent compatible with mine. So i check my cid n mid, n downloaded what might be the original one. so now its fixed..

[Q] Help About Root & Revolutionary

help me, i have followed the instruction from htcdev.com to unlock my desire s bootloader with HBOOT 2.00.002.. after that i found my bootloader with text UNLOCKED but still it shows S-ON.
And then i continued to try root my desire s, i followed instructions that i found in this forum (thanks ) after finished, i tried to install some apps that need root access but i found that my desire s is not rooted (the apps said that).
The last things that i want to asked is, when i go to fastboot menu, i point to recovery mode and i found my desire with Revolutionary 4.0.1.4. I searched info about that things (revolutionary), i found many people said that if i have success install Revolutionary that means i have successfully rooted my device.
is there anybody could help and explained to me about those problems? i would very appreciate that
Revolutionary 4.0.1.4 is a custom recovery. Installing a custom recovery alone does NOT give you root access.
READ index thread in the forum and you'll have your answers
Thanks Bro ContactFront i will search in index thread
With the condition that i have now, is it possible if i want to return it back to default? I want to try update my desire to ICS using RUU Official uptade that i downloaded from htc website..

short answer is yes, you can go back to stock
Don't use the official ics Ruu, it's buggy and unfinished.
My pessimism extends to the point of even suspecting the sincerity of the pessimists.

Alrighty then! Thanks All
But, do i need to root my device if i want to flash a custom rom? or all that i have done is enough to flash a custom rom? as i explained before, this is what i have done to my HTC Desire S :
HTC Desire S ( Gingerbread)
UNLOCKED using HTCDev
S-ON
HBOOT 2.00.0002
Installed Revolutionary 4.0.1.4

seems like you still have not read the index.... You need root to flash a custom ROM(duh) since I am in a pretty good mood today so....
1.root your device
2 . Download your preferred ROM
3.flash your ROM
4.IMPORTANT!!!find your boot. img extracting it from the rom you downloaded
5.go to fastboot
6. connect your phone to computer
7.open CMD
8.cd to our directory(ensure you have adb and fastboot first)
9.
Code:
fastboot erase boot
10
Code:
fastboot boot boot. img
11.reboot and enjoy
Sent from my supercharged :tank:
1.root your device - not needed if he is going to flash a Custom. They are all rooted anyway. I think step 1 should be: flash a custom recovery
...
10
Code:
fastboot boot boot. img
- this will boot the kernel only, but after a restart of the device it will be gone. The command to use is :
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
11.reboot and enjoy - that is all right

Thanks before
Now i have read the index, i found many tutorials to root my device there. i followed some.
but i have a problems when i want to root my device, i tried using SuperOneClick apps. I have done every single requirements of that tutorial.
The problem is i think my device is still not rooted. The first time i used SuperOneClick it shows finished & OK, then i reboot my device.
and then i tried to install some apps that needs rooted device, but those apps tell me that my device isn't rooted!
I tried to root my device using SuperOneClick again, but it always stuck in step #7 (Wait for Device).
any solutions for this problems?
Did i missed something to do?

Well this is pretty outdated.
The attached is the latest 4EXT Recovery, touch edition.
Extract the recovery.img from the zip and flash:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then from the bootloader menu reboot to recovery and select backup/restore -> Backup. After the backup is done go back to the main menu, select wipe/format -> Wipe all partitions (except SDcard). When done select Install zip from the main menu and flash the ROM from your sdcard. After that reboot to bootloader from the Power menu and flash the boot.img as described in my previous post

there is really no "best" rom. it's all down to your personal preference.
say, I'm a big cm/aosp fan but if you are a sense fanboy then you may not like aosp based rom at all.
so if you see something interesting then just go ahead give it a try and decide for yourself.

oh and speaking of 4ext recovery, i'd recommend installing either the free version updater or purchasing the full version from google play.
http://4ext.net/
it's absolutely worth it. one of the best recoverys you can have

HTC Sensation 1.27 stuck at boot screen after rom change

HTC Sensation 1.27 stuck at boot screen after rom change
Yes yes, and another noob reporting for duty after screwing up the rom proces, it took me about 6 hours today after dozens of guides, broken links, outdated software and offline sites to get my phone rooted and i thought, well, a custom rom would be nice too.
So i tried the rom for Sensation from codenamelungo.net copied the zip on my sd card, installed it from recovery and now im stuck at the htc screen and being the noob that i am i ofcourse did not make a backup and have no clue what to do now
If someone could explain to me in simple words how i can fix this?
My recovery is CWM v5.8.0.9
*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.27.000
eMMC-boot
I did the:
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Wipe Cache Partition
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
formatted everything.
Tried relocking it and factory reset but all it does is then booting in recovery menu nonstop on every option i choose.
Another day:
Been on the internet again since i woke up and this is driving me insane, i read many posts with solutions but ofc they dont work for my version or phone damnit. I always have this kind of stuff, why didnt i have the Sensation where stuff go easy, at this point i am hoping to get it to stock again and not ever gonna try flashing custom rom.
I just finished up a couple readings about RUU files which ofc is also driving me insane.
My cid is HTC_e11
version-main 3.33.401.55
So i googled and typed in what was suggest on a post on this forum RUU Pyramid 3.33.401.55 and the only result it links me to is this website in showthread.php?t=1919969
I dl the zip file and what is in it, not 1 .exe file while all posts talking about restoring through ruu talk about a ruu.exe
Pfff, ive read so many posts now on this website and other solutions over the internet i can't even think straight anymore so gonna take a break, was really happy getting a smart phone but i enjoyed 30 min so far ><
Surely hope some1 can assist me with this dilemma

adb server is out of date. killing...

Blank, so no devices
So i did the alternative and typed fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
sendig 'recovery'<6116 KB>...
OKAY [ 1.491s]
writing 'recovery'
Okay [8.510s]
finished. total time: 10.004s
Then when i reboot i get stuck in the HTC screen again

This is not a big issue. Just remember that every time you flash a new rom 4ext should say "A pending update to boot parti...........". All roms will work fine.

You should be able to flash any Rom based on your current firmware. Regarding roms the only difference between s-on and s-off is that you cannot flash boot.img from recovery.
For s-on, either you need smartflash, or a manual flash of boot.img via fastboot flash boot boot.img
This is applicable as long as firmware is same.
Happy to help.
