Does anyone know if it's possible to disable just the cellular network on Windows Phone? I've got an Omnia 7 and all I can do is disable everything or disable 3G. Sometimes I want to be able to ignore all calls and texts but keep Wifi on. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
The easiest way is to disable everything (Flight Mode: on), and then enable Wifi...
Hope this helps,
Stephen
@sermann is correct. Enabling the Flight Mode will turn off everything, but you can then manually re-enable things like WiFi. The cellular radio will stay off until you exit Flight Mode, though.

For all the people that need their battery for a day or more I wanted to add the instructions on how to disable 3G.
Go into the dialer and type in *#*#197328640#*#*
Select "Debug Screen" on the menu
then hit "Phone Control"
then "UE State Control"
"Change RAT to GSM" will turn off 3G access and will leave your DATA on 2G.
This will save lots of battery especially for those who have low 3G signals.
Please note that rebooting the phone or even turning on "Airplane mode" will reverse these changes.
This means you will have to change the settings again (this is also the fastest way to cancel the changes and go back to 3G).
Thanks a ton for this. I'm sure it was in another thread, but I always saw mixed reports and hadn't tried it myself.
I have a 3-4 bar EDGE signal in my office, but only a 0-3 3G signal, so this will be a lifesaver.
However, as soon as there's a ROM that adds the force 2G option that should be there back into settings (and removes any other locks AT&T put in the software), I'll probably go that direction just because it is a pretty clunky way to do something that should be an option as is.
I have something to add to this. If you use a reboot or airplane mode to turn 3G back on, the next time you go to turn 3G off, you may need to re-enable 3G (WCDMA) before changing back to GSM. Apparently, the setting didn't get changed in the debug menu even though I got switched to 3G, so I had to put it back on 3G first.
Is this still the only way to disable 3G but leave 2G enabled on the Captivate? The apps in the Market are still all or nothing (3G or no data connection at all).
Thanks!
3G, 2G disabling?
Is there a way to disable the 3G/2G altogether but still use wireless?
You can always put it in airplane mode and then turn WiFi on if you don't want to use the AT&T network at all.
Does anyone know how to turn off only the phone part of the device, leaving the Wi-Fi / LTE modem / Bluetooth operational?
Reason is that I am using a Google voice number with Groove IP (which is brilliant) I do not want the phone at all....
Thanks...

Click to collapse
toggle the data option off in the dropdown menu to get rid of data, however calls and txts will still go through... you can then turn off 'packet data' in wireless and network settings then also put it in airplane mode in there as well, after your phone should be completely dead on the verizon signal side
Thanks! It never occurred to me that airplane mode would leave wi-fi and BT in operation. I am very surprised indeed!
Is't possible to insert a "data switch On/Off" in those already present in the ICS system tray notifications?
Dont think so. The closest thing is probably airplane mode.
Airplane mode is valid choice but i want preferably option for turn on/off mobile data connection only
Well i dont have a 3G device, so I cant confirm this but... You can turn on wlan while airplane mode is active, without disabling airplane. Doing that should keep your mobile connection off, while still allowing you to use wlan.
Its possible some custom rom have a 3G setting you can add to the toolbar. EOS got a lot of different options you can add, but as far as I can see, no 3G.
I am using Avast on 3 different stock rooted phones and it's anti-theft features are pretty nice. only problem is to get a GPS fix it not only needs the GPS enabled, but also needs a data connection, either connected wifi or 3/4g to recieve the coordinates back at their server (at least in my short testing that seems to be the case). Avast anti-theft has the ability to reboot the phone, so Is there a way I can get my phones to enable 3g by default at startup?
Also, if their is better anti theft with location capabilities please feel free to chime in, but it must be able to give proper location information no matter what the state of the data connection or be able to enable data when pinged for its location.
Any help is appreciated.

Samsung Epic slider SPH-D700 stock rooted

Sorry i didn't simply edit my post. Figured a reply would help to bump it up the threads.
In further testing (on the Epic Touch) it appears avast auto enables wifi, but does not enable 3g. Avast gives me ability to disable/enable a "forced data connection" when it is sent a locate command. When this 'forced data" option is enabled and a command is sent it only enables wifi, not 3g.
I have turned my wifi router off, disabled my wifi and 3g on the handset, sent the appropriate commands and still 3g never enables. I had hoped that when avast triggers the "forced data connection" that since i have no wifi signal available it would enable wifi, never connect to a wifi signal and fall back to 3g but this just isn't the case. wifi turns on, never connects and 3g never enables.
I would presume that if i left the "forced data connection" option of avast disabled i could simply send a command to reboot the phone, the reboot would turn on 3g (provided someone knows how to make it happen), then I could send locate command and this would be an acceptable work around. If anyone understands what I'm getting at and knows how to set up my phone so 3g enables on bootup that would be a huge help.
I have yet to test the avast features on the other phones, but am presuming they will operate in the same fashion and will need the same work around to be implemented. The whole reason for all of this is that I don't have unlimited data and don't want to leave my 3g on all the time to be able to locate my phone in the event of loss. kinda useless if I lose the phone and have no way to engage the features needed to track and recover it.
Again, all help and suggestions greatly appreciated
I am trying to connect to wifi and the use my phone as a router on a upcoming trip while in airplane mode. I know you used to be able to do this but I can not find the option in 5.02. The only option is tethering with my 4g which will not be an option as we will be out of the country. I tried several apps but they all use 4G. Anyone have an idea on how to do this? Thank you
