How to use Locus for Offline Maps - Android Apps and Games

Let me tell my requirements first:
1) I use maps for finding a location, and finding directions only. I am not an advanced map user.
2) For me, Google maps does the job. It saves the maps on sd card, but the problem is after some days, they just vanish. Something like map cache.
3) I need Offline maps, and I know Locus lets user to download maps to sd card, ( and I guess they won't vanish like Google Maps Cache). I have Locus installed. But I found Locus too complex to use ( compared to Google Maps, where I would just load the area and that area remains on my sd card((but vanishes after some days as I said))
I read some tutorials but couldn't follow them well, ( I'm a basic maps user) I need Locus just for offline sd maps, so that when I'm with someone, and I have to take that person to say a new restaurant, I don't want to wait to find that place, direction, etc stuff)
I need these things from locus to save on my sd card:
1) Certain points of attractions (restaurants, places etc.)
2) Directions to those points from my home
3) Maps of my city
So Please anyone tell me step by step guide to download NOT JUST maps but those certain points of attraction and directions to those places fro my home. using Locus.
I can take screenshots, but those image files don't help much.

I read somewhere that they have plans for offline maps(no not the labs one)

Locus Pro is now taking money in order to let you download vector maps ... :crying:

Orux Download Maps is Easy
I am using OruxMaps after I switched over from Locus
It has a fairly simple map download that works very well for me.
The only confusing part is which layers to choose, I usually go for the last 5-6 levels and get them all.
Here's a video on how it works

You can use MOBAC for downloading maps (http://mobac.sourceforge.net/). Save it as "RMaps-sqplite" format and store in maps directory in Locus. You can select this map in Locus now.

google map offline maps is possible?????

i've installed googlemaps beta and is wonderful but to use this software as tomtom is too expansive (sownload map from internet). it's could be possible to go with offline map?
thx
As far as i know... no.
The google maps downloads the map data on the fly (as you scroll).
I have a 5GB data plan, so it's not a big problem for me
yes, on the fly.
in france, we have illimythic, it's an unlimited data so it's perfect for google maps, rss news, internet .... and it's only 6 euros more than a normal subscription.

You might wanna read up on this post for using google maps offline
search for a software named: Terracrosser.
Search google for a program called Google Navigator lets you download maps on phone you can select an area of a map and it will download that area with all zoom levels and views, its very good. Plus it has neat features like street view (before google maps had it) kml creation and other stuff.
Use the google navigator.

Is it worth my $59? I really want offline satmaps, might try the hacks (proxy to download map tiles, not the illegal hacks of Navigator)

Which is now called Global Navigator... this program uses google maps info to feed and allows offline map support, you can also download a certain area of the map at a defined zoom level. its great!
There is a news regarding that it will be possible to use Google Maps offline.
I have heard this news two days ago. Is it possible now? Is it true?
If not, is there any way to do so?
Thanks by now...

[Q] Offline maps

Hey,
Wish google maps wouldn't require INTERNET connection and would work offline.
Since this is currently a fact...
I'm writing an application on Android and looking for Map Lib SDK that will enable me to display objects(layer) on top of a map in OFFLINE mode.
Having problems find one. Will appreciate your help.
I doubt Google will add offline feature ever. I have modded Google Maps app and added maps caching (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737119), but you need something for Maps API. I want to mod Maps API as well, but I have many more important things to do right now, so maybe in the future.
Thanks for the reply.
It sounds too good. I'm going to try that.
From you description, I just need to copy the zip folder to SD card.
I'm new to Android, but shouldn't I install any *.apk?
Appreciate your elaboration on installation method.
Another question.
Once it'll be installed, how to store maps in SD card and make google load them offline. When phone connected to the internet, will it take the map offline or from web?
Thanks
Ohh, I had mistaken. I wanted to give you this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887
But as I said: this is an app with caching, not Maps API library, so it doesn't give you possibility to cache maps in your own app.

rmaps app - import entire country map??

I found the Rmaps app because I'm going on holiday. Some problems with the maps though.
Is it possible to import an entire country map (google maps) into Rmaps? I found the pc software gmapcatcher, but don't know how to export it usably to Rmaps.
I know that hovering above the area in Rmaps caches it, but then I'd have to do that in different zoom levels, taking a lot of time. Is there a way to set the maximum amount of memory Rmaps can use to cache maps?
Hoping someone can help. The different guides out there are not very clear.
I know that with Mapdroyd I can download different country maps. But I prefer Google maps over the maps that Mapdroyd uses.
Sorry I think post is in wrong place, can someone move it to android apps?

Get Coordinates from google Maps - for better use of offline navigation SW

Yes not routinely we need to know coordinates on google map, N google also believe this, thats why they ppl disable in new version of map since long.
What actually need to get coordinates? exactly i needed it for one reason
I am using Navigon navigator, once my destination place is not mentioned in POI, How do i get navigation? once you are not much familiar with place. There is no online search option (atleast i know abt Navign India)
Here you need coordinates
Here simple guide to get coordinates from google Map
- Search your place on google map, long press it, it will popup address
- press address box and select to share this place
- select to share via , e.g. select messeging
- Now you can see a map link for your desired place, copy it
- Open Browser, Paste link in address bar, it will ask to open with, select Internet(Browser)
- Now your place will open in browser, n search tab contains digits in format of lattitude n longitude (like 22.306306,70.12345). Thats is your coordinate
- Note this and just open Navigon, select coordinate from menu, enter lattitude n longitude in respected field - Done
- Now you can get Navigation to your place offline with - Start Navigation
I know this is 2-3 step procedure, but if anyone knowing better n easy trick/ any app that showing coordinate share here

Can't just navigate to the address? Anywho, maybe you should look into an app more geared towards back country navigation or geocaching. There are quite a few in this category.

I can even pay for such an app.

Not using Google Maps directly... Locus is the best.
I remember I used to be able to click in google maps and get coordinates. Useful, when I was in the middle of the lake and I wanted my friends to know where I was.

Thanks for the tip! I run a delivery company and use coordinates all the time. They are easy to get from the laptop but tried and failed numerous times to get them from my phone. This is a bit of an awkward way but at least it works. I don't know why Google don't implement a coordinate feature into the mobile app, it's such an essential tool for driving, gets you to within 5 meters of a point
I used to get coordinates this way and use it in Evernote. I guess this method is now obsolete as any attempt to share the place from Google Maps yields only a link and some texts.

Found a workaround: just head over to your browser and load Google Maps. Search for a place and hold down, use the 'what's here' option. It will search using coordinates and they will be visible in search box.
Also, the url generated from sharing a location in Google Maps app when loaded shows the coordinates in search box (at least in the mobile browser)

GPS Map Downloads

Is there a place to download all US map info for the GPS feature on this device? I got lost today and it wouldn't ever establish a new route because I "lost data connection", but it continued to track my position just fine.
I would suggest using an alternative app. I use google map but have copilot as a backup. The copilot let you download and store maps on the device. Google map let you cache map tiles but to cache the whole US probably to big a file. If you must use Goole map only, check out the Brut's version

Do you happen to know when they last updated it? I Bought for my WM phone a couple of year ago & was really disappointed. That was because my address of 7 years couldn't be found. I ended up sending it back & sticking with TomTom. Unfortunately we are limited with Android with gps programs with down-loadable maps.
With the new version of google maps you can go to Labs (from the menu) and enable a limited form of map caching. It downloads 10 square miles around the area you long press on and you can use it without a signal. You can store up to ten so I basically stored my local area and popular places I go.
Google's obviously working on map caching and this is the first sign of it. Give it a shot and see if it works for you.
Double posted by accident... don't know how to delete.
