[How to] Make old ROMs compatible with new baseband - T-Mobile LG G2x

As some know Owain has a little flashable zip linked in his thread which he states to use to get the ROM to support the new baseband. I decided to look at the files and saw that they are files which are present in ROMs already. I decided to flash an older ROM, the Euroskank CM7 which has great battery life, and then flash the zip. Two calls later, not only is the ROM now compatible with the new baseband but one if the people said the call quality was improved and that I was "crystal clear", this coming from a person who always says he can't hear me. I don't know why Owain wouldn't tell everyone broadly how to get old ROM's working with the new BBC, but here you go. I am also going to whip up a script/zip to convert a new ROM to be compatible with the old baseband.

I suppose this has to do only with the cell radio? Any reason that Bluetooth phone audio does not work on most ROMs after flashing this? Examples are HFP and EB 2.3.7 for me.

OP...Obama is going to create a script? He also claimed he would lower the sea levels and keep unemployment under 8% in exchange for $6 trillion in debt.

He didn't tell because it was already out, all you have to do is move those files using adb. He just made it into a flaseable file to make it easier.
From that you can change the files to provide support for either baseband.

The "for old bb .zip" fixed my audio in phone calls. Thanks!

@Bonk: XXXXOOOOO! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I Love you. This not only fixed the audio for calls on my G2x, but fixed a long standing problem with connecting calls using Simple Mobile (particularly with Gingerbread.) I didn't even need to change the APN. Phone calls worked right after boot up, on T-mobile APN strangely. Hooray!!!! You're the best.
Code:
I used "for old bb .zip"

If anyone is having problems with calls getting a busy signal instead of going to your voicemail try calling your carrier having them reset the voicemail completely. Then take out your SIM card and battery to let the phone sit for a couple of minutes before booting and setting up your voicemail message again. This is what worked with Simple Mobile anyway.
I had tried flashing every rom, kernal and baseband for 2 days before finding this simple solution.

Try to update to 2012 Baseband

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to update to the new baseband but everytime I run the fix my phone still says I have the july 2011 baseband. I am running Hellfire 1.8 and I tried to do it the way it says by flashing ROM, FIX, then GAPPS. but to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You must be on lg's stock Tom with the old baseband and the run lg's update tool

So I would need to go back to a stock ROM, update baseband, THEN go back to HFS 1.8 for it to go through?

I just got finished doing this, WOW the GPS has a fast lock now. Make sure that you flash the BB FIX after you restore you HFP
Guys I cant install the lg update tool. gets stuck around 10% then just stops. Im already having issues and I havent even gotten to the phone part lol help? tried rebooting laptop, running w7 64bit T420 8g RAM. I dont think its my laptop..
UPDATE: added screenshot of where setup gets stuck.
follow this thread. works like a charm. make a backup of your device first.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644
the steps in this thread will restore a stock gingerbread rom. when that is done, use nvflash and put the stock recovery back on as well
reboot your phone and do the update that way (over the air). look in About Phone under system settings and you will see a menu item at the top called software update (or something similar). use that to update your phone, you will end up with GB 2.3.4 and the new baseband
if you want to use a custom rom, eaglesblood build 4 has support for the new baseband built in or you can use CM7 RC3 or a currently nightly, or you can use either kwes or buru's roms, OR owain has a bb update zip that is supposed to work on any rom
good luck!
Sorry it just turned out that it was my jobs firewall that didn't allow the install to talk to the Lg servers. I got home and it worked so I now am running HFS 1.8 with the new baseband. Thanks for everyone's help on this.

how is your BT and call quality? those are issues on all but the stock 2.3.4 that comes with the new baseband (and the tweaked roms based off it)

The only thing I've tried through BT is tethering, as I dont use a BT headset, which works great. Call quality is clearer but not a huge difference. Data drops less often now though.

Try and get as many people to star that so perhaps the developers won't keep telling us it's "Hit or miss" and not a big issue.
I've had no luck with Bluetooth on new baseband but it works great on the stock 2.3.4 ROM from LG. Loaded with tons of bloatware to slow your phone down again.

i starred it and hope it gets fixed one way or the other and i agree, the new stock 2.3.4 works great and getting rid of bloat shouldn't be a problem however, just yesterday and today while running 2.3.4 my phone would just start getting really hot doing nothing but sitting in the holster, screen off, 4g off, BT off, wifi off, dont understand, but i put cm7 june 10 build on and now it doesnt do that
Yeah, I can run custom ROMs and all is well other than Bluetooth for call audio. My problem is I drive all day and have to use Bluetooth, so I'm stuck on stock
Hopefully it will get fixed.

ROMs with BUILT IN BB fix

The new BB can be tricky at times, there are certain ROM's that have the fix built in, or ROM's that claim to be made specifically for the new BB...this is where the confusion comes in.
So here are the ROM's that i've seen that already have the new BB incorporated:
-EB Build 4 (you choose which BB to flash during installation)
-[ROM][GB 2.3.7][v21y] Miui.us 6-7-12
-MokeeOS R.282
-Owain's (Build 79 will have new BB support)
So are there any other ROM's that you do NOT need to flash the BB fix? The new CM7.2 RC3 has the new BB supported within the ROM, correct?
Some more obvious ROM's that support new baseband
Stock 2.3.4 v21y
Kwes1020 Rooted Stock 2.3.4 v21y
BuRom SLIGHTLY Modded Stock 2.3.4 v21y
All Cyanogenmod versions since 7.2.0 RC3
Possibly the CM Nightly just before the May 26 RC3 version
Anything else if you use Owain's baseband fix...
I have used lots of the Cyanogenmod Nightlies because they can be dirty flashed from one update to the next. I also Nandroid back to BuRom or Stock 2.3.4 sometimes to help my wife :highfive: when she gets confused about something on her stock G2x.

It supports the March 2012 and July 2011 BB...unless Ricardo has updated to include the BBs from our Canadian neighbors...and would solve their calling issues they're having...

I bricked my phone the other day running some CPU stability test within the Mokee 2.3.7 ROM I listed above, something happened and the phone turned off, couldn't get power to come on no matter what. Luckily ADB still worked and I was able to get it going again using the flash.bat fix that takes v21e and turns it into a flashable ROM through ADB.
Either way, when I booted up the phone, I had 2.3.3, but still had v21y March 2012 listed under the baseband. I believe everything is good to go, I haven't flashed the v21y.kdz because I don't know if I actually need to.
I'm running Mokee again and his ROM states the new BB fix is incorporated with the ROM, i have no issues with signal and phone call audio so I guess everything is the way it should be.
Some ROM's work with either baseband???
I think I understand what you are getting at...
Do some ROM's (which ones?) operate fine regardless of the baseband? That's something that is not always clear from looking at changelogs. I am usually pretty careful about reading a ROM's description in its OP. We do really need an organized listing of what ROMs work on each baseband...
As for Cyanogenmod, I believe that the RC3 from May 26 only supports the March 2012 baseband. I think I read on another thread that all the CM7 versions that followed RC3 are supposed to be backward compatible with the old baseband as well. I also think I read that EB lets you chose your baseband during the install (Aroma??). Could it be that Mokee detects the baseband and adjusts to allow your cell radio to work with either baseband ?
I am going to look into this stuff some more...

The first Mokee build (about 2 weeks ago) had different ROM's for different basebands. The following build, which was like 5 days ago, stated that there will only be one ROM, but will work with either baseband. Eagles Blood ICS Build 4 makes you choose which baseband during flashing.
Mokee is the only one i've seen so far that lets you use either baseband, and have no problems.
just to be clear on Eaglesblood, you arent choosing which baseband to install, you are choosing which baseband you want the rom to support. if you have the new BB then you will want the built in support from EB, otherwise you cant use your phone as a phone unless you apply Owains fix (which can be applied to ANY rom)
as for CM7 i think all of the builds since CM7.2-RC3 support the new BB. CM7.2 just went stable a couple of days ago so all new nightlies would be 7.3??
also like i said, you can apply Owains fix to any rom to get it to work with the new BB. if you are not sure the rom you installed will work with the new BB on your phone, just make a call. if it doesnt work, then apply Owains fix. if it does, then the rom likely supports the new BB or you are still on the old one
would anyone know which V21Y roms having working BT calling? i know CM does not, therefore, since many roms are based on CM, many roms dont have working bt calling. i know Kwes's, burom, and stock all work though since they are based on stock rom.

[GUIDE]7/9/12(Calls Working)ICS EB4.0.4 v21y/ALL BASEBANDS G2x ROOT&ROM Guide

Hey all, there has been ALOT of problems with the ICS ROM (Calling Audio due to BB Issues), but I have found a successful rom that is WORKING (Calling Audio) with the LG Optimus G2X 21y Baseband (March 11 2012 BB).
I have not seen a guide out for the 4.0.4 ICS so I wanted to give a complete thread from scratch on how to root your G2X and then successfully installing the EB4.0.4 ICS ROM.
SOME links that are provided are not mine, they are Mhaedo's and r4dn14n7 (root tutorial) and it pays off to use the SEARCH button. I actually ordered this phone last week and I have never learned so much in under a week of reading on this forum. I will continue to update and post pictures as much as college time allows me. Hope everyone enjoys!
-- I want to remind you that I am ONLY confirming that TEXT + CALLING + WIFI is WORKING. (I am still unsure of Bluetooth and Tethering).
*I have also posted a youtube video at the bottom to show that the ROM IS WORKING. It does not show how to ROOT, but please PM ME if you need help, otherwise this thread covers everything.

I did try out CM9 and did not have any success with the new BB (Kept getting the clicking noise while dialing). I can only confirm that EB4.0.4 is working. Unsure of whether tethering is working. It does have a few lag spikes, but that's if I'm blasting the cpu.

The exception is that bluetooth call audio still doesn't work with new March 2012 baseband unless you're on a stock based Rom.
Also to the OP. There is no need to root your stock Rom if you are using NVFlash to flash CWM.

Does anyone know if bluetooth audio (paired with the Sync in my Fusion) works with the old baseband? I made the mistake of upgrading the BB when EB fixed their ASOP 4.0.4 for the 21y. After that I noticed that the bluetooth was finally keeping the device rename and was successfully connecting each time the car started up, but had never gotten a call or tried to make one until last weekend. The screeching was terrible. I'll revert back to the 21e baseband if it solves the bluetooth audio problem.
I went ahead and downgraded to 21e today anyway as a test. I'll report back after I test in the car later tonight.

In my About phone menu, i see the last option, Software Version as LG-P999-V21e. But the baseband version has a Date of JUL 15 2011.
I am on stock GB 2.3.3 (rooted and installed CWM 5.0.x.x).
I tried hellfire 1.9 but calls were not working due to the old base band and i got a link to install new base band that i need to flash after rom install. But based on this thread, i can just install eagles blood without any base band update and it should work with my calls?
Pls confirm. I'll try it tonight anyways but if i need to install any other basebad on top of flashing EB, do let me know. Thanks.

Hellfire1.9 is built to work with the new base band. If you are on the V21e baseband you need to install the fix you mentioned for it to work. The fix is not an updated baseband it is just a few files to make the rom compatible with the baseband you have.
Last I checked(havent used an EB rom in a while), EB and most of the other roms available are still built to be compatible with the older basebands with a fix needed to make them compatible with the newer baseband.
So far the only roms that I know have working bluetooth calling with the new baseband are based on the stock 2.3.4 update. There may be some progress with the latest cm10 based roms but i haven't had a chance to check.
Hope this clears it up a bit and doesn't confuse the situation more

in the OP for the Hellfire Sandwich 1.9 thread there is a link under the 1.9 link for the old baseband version
you need to flash that one and not the main edition as that is for the new baseband. not sure if that link actually works being on mediafire and i am at work and that site gets blocked anyway
So all I have to do is download the g2x 4.1 alpha rom and the calls will be fixed? Does it work for simple mobile?

For one, it would help to make a descriptive topic (in case anybody else is having this issue, and for people to see before they click on the thread)
For two, what is your current baseband? I'm not sure how exactly an unlocked phone will work with another provider, so based on the current condition (software/kernel versions/baseband) you may be very limited to what roms you can flash or how effective kdz files are on your phone via the network your on.
I havnt had to do or use the kdz option luckily, but more information should be provided for an informative response.
I would start with 2.3.3 versions, as the audio issues arise with roms conflicting with baseband versions.
Also try the baseband fix posted in the general section, along with owain's baseband fix on his cm9 rom post.
Oh, and search these threads, I'm sure their are plenty of possible resolutions within them... lol. Its probably not the greatest idea to start a topic on the defense if you want a warm reply.

Its because HFS ROM is compatible with the new baseband 21y so you can ether update to march 2012 BB or flash this on top of the ROM http://db.tt/wr9xYGlh to make hfp compatible with the older basebands

Problem solved

hardware or software suckyness?

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read.
I have a LG G2X, love the feel, the display, the specs and the price. Hate the phone....in every other way
I am on my 4th G2X now b/c I keep taking it back to T-Mobile to get a new one based on the following things my phone does:
1. It restarts 1-2x a week, randomly with or without a power adapter plugged
2. It freezes up every other day or so and requires a hard restart (battery pull) to resume use
3. It frequently takes 5+ minutes to get a GPS lock (tried in several cities coast to coast US)
Now if it were just the first phone I could say lemon, but every G2X I have owned does this, T-Mobile told me it was a known issue with the phone but couldn't tell me if it was software or hardware in nature.
So my question to you fellow forumites is this: Is the issue hardware related (move on to another phone) or software (Rom install fixes all my worries and I'm happy forever and ever and ever)?
If you're still using the stock ROM, and are still on 2.3.3, then you are experiencing SW suckage... Get a custom CM7 Rom on there and enjoy some of the finer benefits. Stability will be better but you won't be dead-set stable. GPS has been an issue for some since the inception of the phone. Others have GREAT GPS reception.
Research the Development forums and find a CM7.2 ROM that best suits you. You can of course go CM9 (ICS) but you won't get HW Acceleration and some things just flat out don't work yet.

The stability and GPS performance are greatly enhanced by the stock 2.3.4 ROM, also, if you're not a CM7 fan.

Thanks for the great responses guys, just another reason I love this forum.
I should have given a few more details, I am running stock 2.3.3 on T-Mobile in the US.
Few questions for a techie (but virgin ROMer):
1. Is the 2.3.4 stock available OTA? I haven't seen any available upgrades.
2. What does baseband refer to? (trying to educate myself on the terms)
3. Any favorite ROMs? My must haves are stability and speed, other than that any goodies/awesomeness is welcome but the first two are absolute.
I am tempted to stick to stock ROMs as I haven't flashed one myself yet and this phone is my lifeblood b/c of work.
On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is "I did it with on accident when I dropped it down the stairs" and 10 is "the most difficult thing you will ever do in your life" what is the difficulty for a ROM virgin to sucessfully flash to 2.3.4 (if it is not available OTA) or CM7/other ROMs,etc?
I am technical, 12 year IT professional with MCSA/CCNA, etc but haven't done much research into the ROM biz. If its not too difficult is there a "Must read" guide for noobs?

Difficulty is pretty low. If you can follow instructions, and understand what you're doing, then you should be good to go. If you want 2.3.4, you're gonna need to use LG's ****ty software. Either you use KDZ flasher, or LG's official PC suite. Both crashed on me constantly on Win7 x64. I was lucky/unlucky, it crashed right after writing the baseband (low level radio firmware). It hadn't even partitioned anything yet if I tried to turn it on, not even a backlight was showing. So I had to use NVflash to completely repartition it to stock. After that, I flashed CWM (clockworkmod), the custom recovery. Nowadays, TWRP is available. TWRP is awesome, and they have awesome Devs. TWRP (teamwin recovery project) is touch based rather than CWM and traditional volume key and power button navigation. There is CWM touch, but it's extremely experimental and I find it too glitchy compared to TWRP. TWRP is a work in progress however and there may be issues (I had one but it was easily fixed with one command when I spoke with the Devs on irc) I haven't had any serious ones though. IMO it's easier to NVflash in a Linux environment, because there is no messing around with drivers. But after drivers are installed on windows, the difficulty level plateaus.
As for my favorite ROM, that would currently temasek cm7 builds. They're stable, fast and they're customizable as f***.
I don't have any links right now, because I'm on my phone, (I can grab them later/soonish) you're going to want tga_gunman's thread named something along the lines of "One click recovery flasher" that's for CWM recovery. If you want TWRP, there's a thread that has TWRP in the title.
Also look for "ROM for recovery under NVflash" or something similar to that. That will take you back to complete stock 2.3.3 no matter what happened software wise, unless you somehow managed to break the baseband. The baseband is the only thing that cannot be fixed by NVflash, only can be fixed by LG's ****ty PC software.
For temasek's cm7 builds, the thread is not created by temasek, but the builds are by him. It should be at build 133 or 134.
If you need anything else, PM me maybe.
Good deal, I'm planning on following this thread from the general section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594650).
I'm leaving out of state but will work on it over the weekend.
Thanks for all your help and support everybody, any additional comments are welcome before I start flashing this weekend.
Q - Do I need to get the owain's baseband flash fix or not with the ROM you sugested, the comments on the thread are confusing me a bit. If so where can I download the correct one, can't seem to find it in the Dev threads.

You only need that baseband fix if you have the latest baseband (March 2012) from v21y. It should be available in owain's hopto.

Help a noobie out, what/where is owain's hopto?
Edit: I'll test without the fix, to be sure and flash the baseband if needed, i understood from the comments in the ROM's thread that its needed for Bluetooth calls.
I might have found the baseband fix link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776843) can anyone confirm?

Firstly thanks for all the good Q/A, like a good forum noobie, I'm marking thanks each reply.
I want to make sure I understand your comment. This is what I understood, let me know if I'm off/on. The CM Roms do not work with BT calling, so I should stick with stock if that's important to me? I would assume then for me to get beyond my current issues (OP) my best bet would be to Flash the 2.3.4 stock?
Thanks again for the info and time.
***edit***
Nix the above. I completely read it wrong, thought you were saying all CM ROMs didn't work with Bluetooth. Just so on the current Baseband.
I'm on Jul 15 2011 Baseband currently, so I'll attempt the CM7 ROM this weekend when I'm back home and able to devote more focus. Coming from stock 2.3.3 do I need to flash a kernel as well or will that be in the ROM <---showing my ROM noobness but unashamed to learn.

If you decide to get the newer baseband (you get it with 2.3.4 kdz, only way to get new baseband) and bt calling is important, do not go to cm. If you don't mind staying on the older baseband, bt calling will work fine on cm.

Lol, I feel so dumb, its like learning a new language while being held underwater.
kdz=?
I'm trying to understand why I would decide to get the newer baseband? If I do I can use BT calling but can't use CM7 ROMs, if I don't I can use CM7 ROMs and BT calls should work fine. Dont see the upside to upgrading the baseband, unless it has issues?
BTW as I haven't seen it, I get happy feelings when I look at your avatar

KDZ = LG's proprietary file type to update their phones via PC officially. A lot of people say the new baseband gives them better gps and call quality. Basically if you don't change baseband to the new one, everything will work perfectly. If you DO switch, everything will work perfectly, but only on stock. Everything will work on cm except Bluetooth calling with the new baseband. I don't think it's worth restricting yourself to stock because of the new baseband and and bt calling. My recommendation? Don't change baseband, just go to cm. Also, soon we might start to see android 4.1.1 jelly bean. They won't be stable for a while though.
Too much fun.
Couldn't wait, just finished flashing CWM, then backed up, then wiped like 400x then dropped the CM7 ROM you sugested.
Longest 10 minutes of my life letting it sit.
Working great, I'll update here with any additional info or create a new thread.

Update -
Still working great, only two issues.
* Cellular network is only showing E, played with the settings but can't seem to get any G networks.
* Google apps/play isn't installed, I think I have this one figured out to download/flash from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049154) (http://goo.im/gapps/) but I'm confused about which one to DL.

If it's cm7 get the latest gb one, if it's cm9 get the latest ics one... It has gb or ics in the name of the file.

Yeah goo.im/gapps is the best. For the cell network, try going settings> wireless>mobile>network operators and select "select automatically"
