The multitasking issue is not an issue with sense... it's an issue with ics - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

After much more use with this phone and experimenting with various roms, and researching other users' experiences with ics on the galaxy nexus, I have come to the conclusion that sense is not the main culprit for the multitasking issues experienced with this phone, but that ics is. Yes sense "tweaked" the way the phone handled multitasking with the phone by making the minfree settings more aggressive, however, even after tweaking these settings with the phone, the phone's multitasking is still broken.
If you still don't believe me flash the cm9 or aokp roms and look at how the phone handles multitasking. Apps will still tend to reload after exiting them and using another app after a couple minutes. For example, while using cm9, I would have on average at least 350 mb of ram available for me to use even after having such apps like the web browser running in the background. However, if I exit the browser to go check or write emails for example for a few seconds and then go back to the browser, the pages I were viewing on the web browser resets. Look at this video for example starting around 6:20.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiRuycMN5Wg
As you can see, the web browser page reloads the same way that it does on the HOX. Even looking through other forums show the same type of reloading of apps on the galaxy nexus.
It seems that the only way to truly fix the multitasking on this phone is by changing the way ics handles multitasking altogether. Has anyone been experiencing anything different than what has been described in this post?

I don't recall having any multitasking issues on my Asus Transformer (running AOSP-based rom). Not sure I buy it as an ICS issue, but I will test some more.

This has been discussed ad nauseum. I had no multitasking issues whatsoever on my GNex. Sure the browser might reload but that's it. You can leave games and come back to them an hour later and still be in the same spot. With the HOX, as soon as you leave that's it, time to start over. If it is still doing it on CM9 or AOKP it's because of the KERNEL. Pretty sure both those ROMs still use the Sense kernel or some modified version thereof.

I believe this is correct - the alpha versions of CM9 and AOKP are both still based on the HTC kernel.

Is Froyo Stable?

so now that there is a froyo leak out for our phones, is it stable enough to update to it? i was thinking of going for the cognition v2.2 froyo, but obviously dont want a ton on unreliability problems lol...so whats the status on that?
I can't speak to cognition, but I have been running Froyo since it came out a few days ago (no root or lagfix) and it seems fine. Some have complained about lag - if it is there, it is not near as bad as stock 2.1. Others have said the browser has a memory leak - i have not run into that yet either.
Overall the plusses outway the minuses. I am happy with it so far. I have not had any crashes or FCs and the GPS is no worse then JH7. Unless i find a show stopper issue, I will keep it for now.
oh cool, so is it a final release of froyo or was it just a beta leak?

I would call it Beta. There is still stuff that looks like they ported the i9000 Rom over and they still need to do a little clean up. Some EU spellings of things, some minor bugs, Wireless AP and USB tether are present.
I think this is the 2.2 Captivate Base that they will build from. A solid Beta, but not the final.
It has been running fine for me. Once Rom Manager gets updated things will be great. Only AppsInstaller doesn't work for me but its not really that big of a deal.
This FROYO is actually very stable in that everything works perfect.............Have been running for 24 hrs barely so theres a bit more testing needed but yea its definately a GO . At first i got a couple of force closes on several of stock apps like music, phone, and a couple of others but only happend once and never happen again kind of like if it was still setting up or something but besides that and some odd color changes 2.2 is stunning i notice an overall snappier feel market 2x quiker (i dont use lag fix because it ruinned my OS a few times thats just me) and with root enabled the limitations are infinate
I've only been using it for half the day, but I have to say that samsung fixed most of the little annoying problems with this phone. We finally got the phone we paid for with the exception of lag. It's still there, but the one click lag fix solves that. All in all,i recommend the update. Especially with cognition.
cognition 2.2
I'm running the most recent release of Cognition 2.2 for Froyo with the built in one click lag fix. (Even though I really didn't even need to run the lag fix, its that smooth) It is sick. Phone is just silky smooth in all aspects. The only thing I noticed was that flash was slowing the browser down a little, but only on super large pages with tons of plug ins like huffingtonpost so I set the plug in setting to "on demand" and now I can't find a page large enough to slow down the browser. I put it next to my friends new Iphone4 and it was embarassing how much faster the Captivate was loading pages. Only things that arent working on 2.2 yet are titanium backup, which you really shouldnt use for this anyway since you don't want to install 2.1 apps on the 2.2 update, and Rom manager, but I fully expect that with the level of support we've seen from the Rom dev, he will have it updated in no time as well as an update for Titanium. Overall, I almost feel for the first time that I no longer need to scour the forums looking for ways to improve the phone. It is just sick (have I said how sick it is?) how well it runs with Cognition. GPS works perfectly, and I don't mean just getting locks. I put it on my dash and have been driving around a lot for two days and My Tracks is right on. My position does not drift off the road AT ALL anymore. No more being on other streets and otherwise just drifting around all nilly willy. GPS Test shows at least 6 or 7 locked satellites and usually 9 or 10 locked. I don't think I would get better performance out of a Garmin or Tom Tom. It does get better sat locks on the dash with a clear view of the sky rather than in the cup holder in the center console however, but that is to be expected with any GPS device. Even so, it was still fully functional in the cupholer.
I installed by Odin one click back to stock, did a GSM Master Reset via the phone keypad *2767*3855# then rooted, put the downloaded Cognition 2.2 file on my internal sd card, and then installed with Rom Manager, (works because I'm back on 2.1 at this point) I HIGHLY recommend this. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all the spare time I just freed up by not having to flash my phone a million more times
P.S. If you can, donate a few bucks to DesignGears for the work he has done with this. It's totally worth it! It's amazing that he's gotten a ROM out so fast with the release and he is constantly working on, upgrading, and tweaking his work to make it better. (which is why im sure I'll be flashing again in the future /cry)

Go to pocketnow.com (full desktop version) and click through a few articles there. Muhahaha. Scrolling will become ultra slow, other apps will be forced out of memory, and you may even get a browser crash if you're lucky. That's the memory leak bug.

The FroYo build is stable and fast. I like it.
I rolled back. It is stable - but some of the underlying features are broken. Forwarding emails does not include any comments you make. Google contact groups now work, but the listed names map to the wrong contacts.
Some nice improvements overall, but some issues are show stoppers for me. It won't crash though - or at least it didn't for me.
Has anyone tried enabling jit on this? I know it was attempted on 2.1 but no one made it past the lock screen before it bootlooped on the galaxy s. 2.2 is made for jit & it should be more stable now right? All I could find in the forums is how to do this for other phones like the droid x (sounds pretty unstable though) & im too much of a noob to figure out how to apply that to my captivate to try it.

Froyo has been pretty stable for me, and certainly better overall than 2.1 was. It still needs work to have what I would call a well-polished feel, but overall I find it to be an upgrade.
I'm hoping it is a beta, and we'll get an even better one soon

recommend a rom for me

i just traded my htc vivid for my bros samsung infuse. I loved the vivid but my bro wants it and infuse was mine in the first place. did some swapping around with my brothers. I just hate the stock rom and all the bloatwares. Can someone recomment a smooth stable rom for the infuse? also one that can tether.
Which Rom is a personal preferance.
I currently run F1 Innovation, Fast, Stable and smooth. Not sure about tethering.
F1 Innovation
Check out the super thread: Infuse Super Thread
The current miui does tethering very stable and fast. Also the battery drain seems to be fixed which is a huge plus.

Still i haven't installed it but I read that CyanogenMod 7 works flawlessly on the Infuse. I read you can use it to connect usb devices to your phone so i guess it can do pretty anything, tethering included.
The only thing that seems to work crappy is audio through bluetooth but i bet it's not a big problem : bluetooth is one of the most stupid and unsecure tecnologies ever invented.
You will find on this forum tons of informations about roms...just read it!
I have a preference for Infuse based ROM on my infuse.
they are listed in the dev section under superthread

Don't install a Samsung based rom, which is everything but CM7 or MIUI. Both CM7 and MIUI are AOSP based. MIUI is too much like iOS for my liking. I have been running CM7 on my infuse since I got it, and before that on my inspire, and before that on my captivate. CM7 is the only way to go.
For what it's worth, I'm running CM7, the newest nightly on 1/19. Very stable (some apps I had while running stock Froyo or Infused 2.2.3? would force close alot, not on CM7, but it's a very selective few apps I use for work), very smooth, very fast, overclockable to at least 1.4 gHz for most people. Some people do 1.6 gHz but it's not stable for my phone. You can undervolt it by some amounts for that extra battery savings, and it's constantly having features added to it, like T9 dialing that I discovered was included (much MUCH love for this small thing).
For all the added features, I regularly go through my phone and make sure I don't have apps that do things that are now part of the phone, so I keep the app list short and sweet. Having redundant features means that 2 things are trying to do the same thing, and I'd rather punch out my battery more and more without giving up some conveniences I had Dialer One on my phone, and it's not that great looking, but I had it just for the T9 dialing. Once I saw that CM7 had a T9 dialing feature, I uninstalled Dialer One. The music app, while not as heavy on the eye candy, made me get rid of Doubletwist and Airsync. Airsync never really worked great, for me at least.
CM7 doesn't have fully working bluetooth on the Infuse, some people have trouble with auto brightness (my personal preference is that I'd rather use the status bar slider to adjust brightness), and HDMI out doesn't work. It also has some extra niceties, such as theming, a DSP Manager app (that controls audio levels and equalizers), and is pretty much always being updated.
The drop down bar can be customized almost entirely, and because bluetooth doesn't work, not that I want it, I got rid of that icon. I replaced it with a screen timeout toggle. It has many more options than that.
One thing, and I don't think this is CM7 exclusive, is that sometimes my text messages won't send. I'm using GOSMS as my messaging app until the stock messaging app starts sending ALL of my texts. MMS relies on a data connection so I tend to pull the drop down and enable that when I want to send a picture or download one. Once it starts working the same way, I'm uninstalling GOSMS because it tends to be heavy and sometimes lags up noticeably.
I don't use bluetooth, and I don't think I've ever opened that HDMI dongle packaging, much less tried to use it. While it would be nice if they functioned, I get from day to day without even thinking about those. Your mileage may vary.
I'll throw my support behind CM7. I briefly tried ZEUS, but switched back after a couple days.

The only way to get a rom that has everything working like it should is to flash an infused based rom ...NOT an aosp rom..... cm7 is good if you don't need Bluetooth....as cm7 and miui use a different bt stack then Samsung ...so in my opinion that issue wont be fixed....and they have been known to have data issues....flash ANY of the infuse based Rome if you want complete functionality....period

Like others say if you need BT audio or HDMI stick with Samsung roms. I could care less about both, i have been bouncing back and forth between CM7 and MIUI for months now whenever there is a noteworthy update. Both are very quick and clean in my opinion and you can't go wrong with either one. I have tried most Samsung roms available but they are always short lived on my device...they always feel as if lacking something. Props to the devs for making them available though!!!
thank guys for the responses.. I am currently running the cm7.. looks great and smooth but i got a few issues maybe its the phone itself.

second: the browser seems to be very slow and it force closes at times maybe it the site that i go to. ESPN scoreboards, i bet a lot so i check scores frequently and open a lot of pages.
third: yeah, battery does seem to go fast maybe because of the excessive use of the web.
BTW do you guys have to put in any apns?? I didnt'.
I don't think it's your phone. I'm still new at this, but as I understand it, you can make/flash tweaks and different modems that may help with the issues you encounter. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm on cm7 and I keep going back to it everytime I flash something new. It just works the best for me. As for data issues, you need to setup the apn fix listed in n0ctrnl's compiled cm7 thread. I've tried many, but Zeus is the best one that's fully functional (BT and HDMI).

Definately Zeus for now. It's snappy, everything works and theres even a few themes as well as an ICS launcher. All the AT&T bloat has been removed. I used to prefer stock, but Zeus made me convert. It's just more responsive than any other rom for the Infuse.
It's all a matter of personal preference. I've run about 12-15 different ROMs on my Infuse so far. I keep coming back to Sensation 1.1. I really like being able to edit my status bar.
I didn't care for the camera in CM7, but it is a very nice running ROM. Only thing I miss is not having an extended power menu.
Just play with a bunch of them until you find one you like.

[Q] What's the best ROM for me to use?

Currently I'm using this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571595
ICS Smooth Ice
But I'm having a lot of problems with it. I don't know if it's unique to that specific ROM or what. For example, using Phone is very shoddy at best; it takes forever to open and each button press has a lot of lag. Contacts typically crashes right away. For some reason, apps like Rdio that use lockscreen player controls don't show up on the lockscreen. Lots of apps like WidgetLocker force close from start. Just lots of little quirks all of the OS as well, responsiveness issues and freezing. I haven't done anything unusual to the ROM, just stock latest version of it.
I just want as close to a base ICS experience as possible (although maybe with CRT lock... I love that lol). Is there a more stable/faster/better ROM for ICS or am I going to have problems anywhere? I read around but I still have a hard time really grasping what I'm going to get where and I was hoping some more experienced people could maybe send me in the right direction.

One S - do you guys have the same multi-tasking issue as the One X?

Hey guys,
I've used a lot of Sense 4 ROMs on my Sensation, and back in February or March I remember saying to someone "you know, it seems like even though Sense 4 uses less RAM, all my recent apps have to reload like I'm on my old iPhone".
At that, the whole thread yelled at me and called me stupid, but we now know Sense 4's memory limits were drastically altered by HTC for better battery life and Sense performance.
So my question is, as somebody considering the One S, have you guys had similar problems with not being able to keep many recent apps in memory? And if you've found a way to solve this... does Sense 4 slow right down?
Just curious as I might buy one (hopefully the S4 version even though I'm in Asia, fak you HTC) in the next few weeks but couldn't live with the constant redraws and inability to go from messaging to browser and back without the browser refreshing
Cheers!
Sense 4 is great, However, Its a massive RAM hog and has this tendency to reload itself whenever it gets the chance.
Multitasking is pretty impossible. Not sure what HTC did here but its down right ridiculous !! we have one of the best processors on the market, Combined with a massive amount of RAM (for a phone) and we cannot multi-task.
This is a major error and im hoping now the kernel source code is out, that some kernel tweaks will help defeat this issue.
Doesn't bother me. Behaves pretty much the same as my Sensation did on any ROM (Sense 3.6/4 or de-Sensed).
Definitely same problem on t-mobile (with just the stock ROM). Multitasking is basically non-existant, despite having, in general, 200 MB of ram free.
edit: not trying to imply being on t-mobile has anything to do with it, just specifying its the US version
I am definitely having major multi-tasking problems. It is terrible, much worse than Sensation, possibly worse than G1. I am probably gonna return mine and get the T-Mobile GSIII.
I just got the update, and it seems like it might be *slightly* better. Then again, it could be my imagination.
Is it any better with custom roms or is it all kernel source related?
The multitasking experience on the stock un-rooted rom was utterly innexistant on my part. Ie: Google reader > Read big article in Firefox (B) Browser > Return to Reader but it has to reload because it was closed. The built-in task manager rarely reported more than 150mb on my device and it acted like it refused to use the last 100mb. With a custom ROM and tweaks (mainly if you disable the Sense launcher/widgets), I rarely see app reload in short time use. Don't expect to see open your app you closed the day before tho.
You could wait to use CM9 and have twice more free RAM but notice that you will loose the device's special features like ImageSense, Beats (and SRS/Dolby), native DLNA, native Dropbox and other online services, etc...

Are you happy, overall, with the device?

Disappointed with stock (JB) experience?

Howdy hello,
I've been on my Nexus S since GB. Ever since I've rooted and been running custom ROMs. I've had some awesome experiences but some crappy ones at the same time, all of which I attributed to my phone running a custom ROM.
Now I've finally got the new, new stock JB on my device, and after running it for a few weeks, I'm a bit disappointed. The features are nice and all, but there are so many issues I face that make it near unusable. To name a few:
Google Now takes way too long to pull up. At least 5 seconds and even while it's loading the cards, it's very laggy. The search button used to be a quick way for me to search for something, but the is effectively ruined with this lag.
Constantly losing data / connectivity. I know this may be at the carrier level, but I've never had this much trouble. ALSO, in these cases, the phone will often be reporting that it has full bars / full 3g connectivity, so either way the phone is acting screwy. I mean seriously, the one thing I need my phone to do is make a damn phone call, yet it semi-frequently fails to do so.
Apps fail left and right. Today my youtube app crashed in the middle of the first video I pulled up on it. I know this isn't really the OS, but it's part of the stock experience, and I think android should be held responsible.
Just a few minor gripes. I'm just wondering: has anyone else experienced this? I did a full wipe before installing the stock JB rom, and I don't think it could just be root permissions making things go wacky. I may consider re-wiping and only installing a few apps, but I really don't have that much crap installed, so I'm not sure if that's the issue as well.
I saw another post recommending to get a new SIM card from AT&T. I have had mine for a few years, so that could be a possible fix for issue #2, but I don't think that's the entire reason.
Any feedback is welcome. Thanks a lot all.
Stock JB was very laggy on my NS for some reason. Even swipping pages in the home screen was laggy. Some apps would instantly crash, too.
I've been running custom JB roms on my Nexus S, and its been running really well. The only thing is im experiencing the same lag that you do with Google Now. It has caused me to open my browser to do a search, which is disappointing, because in GB and ICS, the Google Search bar was so quick and convenient.

The cards could be taking longer to load because of your flaky connectivity. Can't expect them to load instantly if your data/signal is dying all the time, can you?
Definitely an inferior experience here on stock JB compared to ICS. Really hope Google fix this in an incremental update, as it's a bit silly their second-best phone can't run JB properly.

heh, that's a fair point. I'm not so upset with the cards taking a long time to load as I am that, while they are loading, the OS is very unstable. It's difficult for me to bring up the keyboard and search google while it's trying to load those cards. I can't believe it's not butter

My thoughts exactly . I was excited to get back on stock so I could have a functional phone without any added bells and whistles. New features are nice, but not at this price.
Try running a custom kernel.. Try the thalamus kernel its very stockish and it's SUPER smooth..

I'm running stock on [email protected] with a matrix kernel everything smooth for me

I had problems with JB too. There were a few lags, especially with Google Now. Some apps would crash every time I tried to open them, and the launcher crashed every time I tried to change wall paper.

Hmm I can say that AOSP JB is WAYYYY better than ICS. Soon I can port my ROM from the NS4G to the NS.
I have to agree with this. I've used stock JB when it was released, I was wowed by it's smoothness and cool animations. But everything felt a little slow and sluggish coming from ICS custom rom. After switching to Jellybro, JB feels both very fast and smooth. If you feel disappointed with JB, try using custom rom.

I don't know if you guys with problem tried that yet, but it might be a good idea to do a factory reset. You will lose all your data if not backed up but I'm getting a feeling it could help. JB has only been smoother than ICS for most.
Looking to get an NS soon, but it may help, as others have mentioned to run a custom kernel and bump up the clock speeds a bit.
My N1 is almost perfectly smooth (very little lag and often times none) with JB installed and overclocked.
My GNEX is smooth as butter. (As to be expected). But I guess what I'm saying is, if the N1 can run JB smooth, then the NS should not have any problems.
And while I know AOSP is technically designed to run on multiple devices, only two were in mind when JB was released....the N7 and the GNEX. Everything else is an afterthought in which AOSP may not be fully optimized for the hardware that is pushing it. (Just my opinion).
And another opinion while I'm on my soap box. JB is what ICS should have been.
In my opinion 512 MB of RAM are a tight fit for Jelly Bean. I can just run 3-4 background apps without kill-restart-kill-restart-kill-restart and a constant lag.
I remember some kernels used to have compcache support. Maybe I could try to enable compcache/zram.

I just got my GNex and the difference with JB on this phone is night and day. I didn't think it would be but I'm pleasantly surprised. But yeah. The RAM issue seems to be my biggest gripe with it on the NS. And for some reason, it just dominated my battery. I went through my first cycle on stock with Trinity and managed 3.5 hours of screen time over the course of almost 17 hours and still had a little under 50% remaining. My NS would've been dead long before that with the same usage pattern.....
I run stock JB with Matr1x. It works very very well.

Not to mention it only uses 368 mb of them. If it used the full 512, it would be pretty nice
I'm running Androxide 3.1 and used to run AdamG's custom ROM. Both ran great, no hiccups what so ever, Google now loads very fast, I guess it depends on your GPS and internet connection. My experience with JB is far better than the fastest ICS ROM out there, I believe given enough time, performance will become exceptional.

That can be tweaked a bit with different kernels.
I am running XenonHD 9 + marmite 4.2 kernel. It's stable and smooth. Worth a try.
