[Q] Noob question: How to use CWN ROM Manager to install Custom ROMs? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Just rooted my phone, unlocked bootloader and set SuperCID and also installed CWN Recovery.
However, I've install CWM ROM Manager and it cribs about how it can't proceed because I have no Recovery installed. But I do! What could I have done wrong?

it's a known issue. for now, you can launch ROM Manager and choose the option to "Reboot into Recovery". your phone will reboot to recovery and from there you can select a ROM to flash to your device (assuming you've saved the ROM file to your OneXL).

You don't need ROM Manager to flash anything. Just do it from CWM.

Oh! I didn't realize I could use just the Recovery thing. Got everything running just fine. Thanks folks!

Yeah, I don't think ROM Manager even wipes or flashes anything on its own. It just provides a different interface for recovery (reboots the phone and makes those selections for you). And it also provides an interface to browse and download ROMs.

stupid noob clockwork questions

I know this is very basic, but I rooted the phone and now have to put clockwork on the phone. so the question is, do i use the one click clockwork thing?
what about the rom manager version, can you flash that with a rooted system through normal recovery? or is it like no matter what I need 1 click clockwork on the phone before putting on a kernal that will have clockwork in it?

As of last night there is a shortcut now available.

Note, using reboot recovery or adb reboot recovery will take you to a "stock" recovery. Simply apply the update.zip on your SD card and clockworkmod will start up. (This method is better known as fakeflash)
Starting up recovery through ROM Manager will take you directly into clockworkmod.

Go to this thread and download the .zip of the ClockworkMod kernel. Rename the file "update.zip" and place it at the root of your SD card. Reboot into stock recovery by turning off the phone and then hold volume down/camera/power. There should be an option to install update.zip - do that. Now you can reboot the phone and you should have the ClockworkMod kernel installed. Go to the market and download ROM Manager. Open it up and select Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. After the file is downloaded select Reboot into Recovery. Your phone should reboot and automatically install Clockwork. Done.
From my understanding the .zip is signed so this should work, although I used a different method as I already had the old Clockwork Recovery installed when I installed the ClockworkMod kernel.
I think that you need either a custom recovery or use redbend ua to flash- the true stock recovery will not work as it is not signed by samsung etc

Problem trying to backup with ROM Manager

I have just rooted my phone recently on my Droid X using Z4root and it worked fine. Then I backed up my phone using Titanium Backup, which also worked fine also. Then I installed ROM Manager and then flashed ClockworkMod Recovery within ROM Manager. When I click on Backup Current ROM the phone reboots fully without going into recovery. So I open ROM Manager and click "Manage and Restore Backups" and there is no file there.
I tried clicking "Reboot into Recovery" to see if I could select it there and the phone just reboots back to android without going into recovery. So then I turned off my phone and held down the home+power to go into recovery which works. When I'm there it doesn't have an option to backup my ROM. I don't want to flash this ROM I want to try until I can backup my current stock ROM, in case something goes wrong.
When at the blue recovery screen I notice at the bottom in yellow a message is displayed "E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command. Wondering if this is my issue. I also notice in recovery it gives me an option to "apply sdcard:update.zip" but I don't see an update.zip on my sd card, so I'm not sure if I should select this before being able to backup my stock ROM. I'm afraid to flash the ROM before knowing this current problem. Can anyone help me with this issue? I am new to the whole root and ROM hacks, but have been researching in depth and taking all precautions so I'm trying hard not to brick my phone. Thanx in advance.
First off update.zip is just an update.zip package. Could be anything thats an update and can be flashed. Yeah...not sure why rom manager doesnt work for you but all the same your better off doing it from recovery anyway. You can make backups in recovery you don't need rom manager just use rom manager to manage your backups it will see them no matter what! It will allow you to rename them as well so they are easily identifiable also. If your rom manager works youll be able to name the backup before hand! If you ask me rom manager doesnt update the roms fast enough anyway they are usually like 2 days behind! Good tool either way but not so good at replacing roms as recovery does a better job. I have never had one problem using recovery but I've had a problem every time I try to flash a rom using rom manager!
Okay I figured out that the ClockworkMod Recovery must not have flashed properly or something bc I was just at the dev's site and the picture of the recovery is different than mine bc it's green and has many more options to choose from. Plus it says ClockworkMod Recovery on the recovery screen and mine doesn't. It's blue and says android recovery at the top. When I open the ROM Manager it says that I have the ClockworkMod Recovery but I don't. I even tried reflashing but it didn't work either. So how do I get the ClockworkMod Recovery to flash correctly?
I am having same problem but I just use bootstaper and it works fine
I tried downloading the bootstrap from the creator of ClockworkMod Recovery but the link seems to be broken. What bootstrap are u using?
I found the bootstrap for the Droid X on the market and that fixed the issue I was having. Wish I would have known from all the other posts/articles I read that it was a requirement for the Droid X to have the bootstrap to run recovery

[Q] Rom manager keeps asking me to install CWM Recovery but it is already installed

I have a rooted Sony Ericsson X8. I installed rom manager to backup my current rom before doing anything else (other than rooting). When I tried to backup I got that warning saying I had to install CWM Recovery. I looked for tutorials and flashed it thru xRecovery. Next time I booted into recovery I saw that CWM Recovery was installed. I booted into normal mode and opened Rom Manager. Then, when I tried to backup, I get the same warning saying I need CWM Recovery installed (even though it is allredy installed).
I did try "manual flash override" but it keeps prompting that damn list of CWM Recovery phone images where my phone is obviously not listed.
What am I doing wrong? Do I screw Rom Manager and backup/flash manually via the recovery boot mode?
Screw this app, I am doing this the manual way, there seems to be no way to make Rom Manager work.
Bump. I would like to know the answer to this one. I am running cm6. ROM Manager asks me the same thing, and as stated above our beloved sony x8 is mentioned in the list of phones. What do ppl have against our glorious phone
If you are rooted, but on a stock ROM, the stock Recovery will be persistent, i.e it will replace the custom one on every reboot of the device. You can stop this by deleting certain files, (whose names i don't remember, but could probably be found with a search of the forum.)
It's a common issue on Rom manager
Sent from my HTC Bliss using XDA Premium App
start the rom manager and press menu then press manual flash override. should stop asking you.

Unable to flash ROMs

Hi guys!
Yesterday I successfully rooted my NS (it is a European SLCD model with stock 2.3.6 on it) following the newest guide on nexusshacks.com. So I ended up with TWRP recovery.
Then I thought the easiest to install CM is via Rom Manager. Therefore I had to change recovery for CWM. (I flashed the latest one.)
And here comes my question: why am I unable to flash CM?
First I tried it in Rom Manager, after wiping everything and rebooting system nothing happens, except for a big yellow exclamation mark.
Then I downloaded the proper CM myself and I tried to do the whole process manually in recovery menu. After wiping and choosing update from SD card I get a message like the process is aborted.
I also tried with an older CWM and with other ROM.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot

Boot into bootloader, then flash recovery via fastboot.
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
stock firmware will rewrite your recovery after each boot. flash recovery then flash this right after.
Follow what SEAN SAys..............He is a Master in all these , and he helped me with details to root, flash cwm, make it sticky and flash custom ROMS.
It took me 5 minutes to do all those , and Now I am switching Roms like I switch my underwears every day twice.
I must say, Sean has the best possible way which is like a finger click.

[Q] ROM Manager doesn't recognize CWM Recovery ?

Just finished successfully rooting my HTC Vivid, following the wonderful SuperGuide by slapshot30
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836&highlight=rom+managerHowever, when I run ROM Manager (freshly installed from the market), it doesn't appear to recognize CWM Recovery even though it's clearly installed.
The ROM Manager version is 5.0.0.6, and the CWM Recovery version is 5.5.0.4
I see that the when I boot into Recovery, it is headlined as "CWM-based Recovery", which is probably why ROM Manager doesn't recognize it, but I'd like to know that such is the case. I tried posting this question in that thread, but I guess I'm too new to be allowed to.
Thanks for any help.
