Deodex help...blah.. or something like that.. - General Questions and Answers

Hello!
Kinda new to the forums, didnt see any forum exactly for my phone.. and dodmt wamt to be ignored sooo here goes..
I have the Galaxy Exhibit 4g, flashed stock beta 1
Ive used countless of different roms.. But I just love the stock rom, althougj I live the.optimized memory I got on the roms.. id clear
ram and usually end up having 240 free ram!
But using stock I only get about 100..
The title is konda miss leading.. because I dont know if thatll fix my memory.. basicly what Im sayong is I want the optimized memory on stock.. of anyone could help.. id love you forever.<3

Android automatically manages the memory usage. The forced removal of apps running is often not raccomended (there is a risk of data loss).
Therefore, If you really want to lighten your ROM, you have to give up some apps (or service) that is memory-resident (to have a list, search in the forum).
Good luck!

Thank you so much!

May go back to a Thunderbolt

Hi guys, I was just wondering if there is any chance that this phone could compete with the Thunderbolt because of the lack of RAM? It seems so laggy sometimes compared to my friends Bolt. There are so many things to like about this phone but multi-tasking can be painful sometimes. Today in Chicago his Bolt was getting 30 MB download and I was getting around 20. What is causing such a big difference? Can rooting make that big of a difference? How much more RAM are you guys seeing after debloat? I don't know much about Samsung phones but I need to get the scoop so I can make a well informed decision. Thanks guys

To my understanding, RAM is RAM. There is no gaining any by deleting bloatware. You're just gaining system storage(app space) by deleting bloatware. But whatever RAM your phone came with, is what you have. For instance, let's use your PC as an example. If you want to install a new OS on your PC and it requires more memory, you're going to have to go and buy another memory board if you have a second slot that allows you to add more memory. Once you do that, then things will run faster and you can do more multi-tasking . But just removing apps and files off of your PC will not accomplish this by itself. So yes, more RAM can make a difference. Try rooting and apply the Voodoo lag-fix because this helps tremendously. Samsung does something different with Android on their phones, to my understanding, which makes the phone lag very bad. The Voodoo lag-fix changes the file system from RFS to EXT4, thus speeding things up the way it should have been out of the box. Go to the development section and read up on it some. If it sounds good and you're not afraid of the procedures (which are explained with step by step directions and pictures to make it very easy), then you should give it a try and see how it works out for you. Hope this helps.
BTW, this will not help with your internet download and upload speeds. That's dealing with something different.
Came from a bolt. Removed touchwiz...no lag. Seems just as speedy as the bolt. Download speeds are about the same also. The only thing i miss is the dev support.

Thanks for the response. Thought some of that bloatware was using up system memory running in the background. I have read about the lagfix but I don't really understand what it actually does, well I should say I don't understand how changing the file system helps, but I guess that's why I'm not a developer. I'm not afraid to root as I've had the OG and Thunderbolt and rooted both of them. I only have few days to make a decision but I am missing the ability to surf and talk on 3G as well as 4G. Grrr why does Verizon do this!

Exactly how I feel as well. Don't miss the Thunderbolt at all...
lag is still there when you multi-task... i can play words with friends, play music in the background and browse (sites like espn, pocketnow, techcrunch) with flash set to always on and using desktop view with the Tbolt and no lag! This is using stock browser, Miren, Xscope or Dolphin.. I cant do this with the Charge unless I use Opera Mobile. The thing that gets me is how my Epic on RFS file system can handle it and the Charge cant? it has the same processor and RAM... My guess is poor RAM management or maybe the new Touchwiz base that it uses..

[Q] How to make Motorola Spice run faster?

Hi I recently picked up the Motorola Spice from Mobilicity and I wasn't happy with the constant lagging and crashing. I rooted the phone with SuperOneClick and deleted the annoying Motorola flashback feature that sllows down the phone. Is there anything else I can do to make my phone run faster?
Thanks,
Alex
Have you got any answer? My brother bought this phone and wanter to change ROM, but couldn't find anything so I'm looking for making it faster at least!
I don't know how everyone say you could change everything on Android and I'm having so much trouble with a phone like this..
To increase your devices performance you could see if a custom kernel with overclocking options is available.
Android devices can be changed more than others, but some just don't have alot of customisations because the device is not that popular.
So either they are available, you make them yourself or buy another device.
Well i think you can use setcpu on it but some people have had problems with overclocking pas the max 528mhz.
I would flash an overclockable kernel then run setcpu to see if that helped. If there are custom roms, install one of them to remove all the bloatware. Good luck.

Hey guys. I'm just going to let people know what I did in case anyone else needs it.
set cpu didn't work on this device.
i downloaded titanium backup and tried to shed all that extra weight. delete flashback, corporate calendar, stock browser, anything that just takes up space. obviously back it up first just in case.
install Opera Mini. The phone is pretty slow and if you're on mobilicity, the network isn't that great. opera mini works like a charm
and lastly, dont expect much from it. it does what i need it to do now and thats most important
good luck

[Q] Noob lookinor someadvice/answers.......

Im fairly new to the phone mod game and im the only one of my friends who gives a damn. Needless to say that means ive no one to talk to about this stuff. I recently rooted my Inspire (aahk) works great. Now my phone is insane with speeds like ive never seen. However i was flashing some roms around trying to find the one just right for me, and thought id try CM7 did a full wipe. Being the impulsive person i am i only backed up on my SD and when it told me to do a partition i didnt consider the consequences..... So now im stuck with CM7 (not for me) and i guess ive got to start all over. In trying to download new ROMS it seems that only the ones n the premium section will really change the whole phone. Is there a way i can get back to the ROM it had me on just after rooting? Or am i starting all over? would it be wise to unroot and start over? i really dont like the ADW base of CM7. I had been running HoneySense which was awesome but could barely use my data other than the Market..... Yes i know im long winded but like i stated. Ive got no friends that give a damn about their phones. ANY hints tips advice would be appreciated. And to all of you developers, keep up the good work, i envy your skills.... 2 years ago i could barely check an email, and have been learning as much as possible as quick as possible. Thanks for reading my nonsensical ramblings
Also what is the difference with the nandroid and clockworkmod? can i use apps for both or are they root specific... You can laugh if you like
Your nandroid/cwm backups will backup your entire rom. Forget restoring those if you want to go to a different rom. You need to be rooted if you want to perform these actions, but you already are rooted. If you want to backup your apps then use Titanium backup or My backup root to backup just your apps. Don't backup system stuff. You can flash any of the roms in the development section. You do not need to root again. Always wipe before flashing a new rom. In recovery you select wipe and choose to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset, and you can also format system if you want. Don't wipe anything else. Backup your data that you want to save before wiping.
Pretty much what Wolf is saying..Also @Diesel321, So what is it that over all your looking to do with your phone.?
Some of the biggest ?s that is asked a lot when it comes to roms is stability, battery life. And whats the "best" and there is really no "best" one. But for I would recommend NinjaRom. I have been running that for @ least 5months and only had minor issue which was fixed from the support team. Also tried android rev,CoreDroid all good stuff.
But when you do flash its a good idea to do a back up. Which I go through ClockWorkMod (CWM) and select back up and I aslo save each back to my sd card and save it the pc to a folder that I created for my Roms/Tweaks/Add-Ons/etc..
but if you need any other ?s just ask or Pm Me glad to help out.
Thanks to both of you guys... Overall i want to speed up my system (which the "set cpu" app and all overclocking apps confuse me) I have tried all different kinds of settings and the only way i can get a decent result is through wifi. Also batterylife and the more i learn about phones the more i like so the deeper i dive the more intriuged i become... I always want more faster and better. As far as ROMS anything based or similar to CM7 i do not like, before i eber rooted i tried the ADW launcher and am not a fan of the set up. I love the sense roms, but the only ones i can find through cwm are HoneySense which only lets me access my data through the market (no browser, no email, no google, no FB) i installed Leedroid last night and its ok but the specs of Honey Wonder look awesome. I cant find it on cwm and i cant seem to gert it from my computer to my phone. Im about to try and put my SD into the cpu and do it that way. When i backup my Apps should i backup my data for them as well? ANd then can i restore them over any rom? or do i go back and restore them from the market, can i save my home screens to restore the way i like them or do i have to do it manually any time? Im sorry if im overloading with questons but as i stated previously none of my friends give a damn about any of this stuff, except one and he kniows about a quarter of what i know. Hes wanting to root his LG OPtimus C but i told him to wait till i learn more about it, also i dont know if there is a root for it. Any other tips and advice are always welcomed appreciated and thanked... Again thanks guys.. One more. Why cant i seem to download anything from my XDA Premium App? that would make my life much easier
wow that was a mouthful, you should be able to download from xda but if your having trouble try-menu-browser also your not limited to only inspire roms the DHD is almost the same phone and is global and non-branded (INSPIRE 4G-AT&T) so check out some of these.

Ok.... Where to start... You can back up your apps with data. I restore those because for like any programs such as browsers or any games I want to restore the settings and bookmarks, passwords, etc. Before I restore in a new rom I go through the checked programs that are supposed to be restored, Apps with data in Titanium Backup Pro, and make sure I am only restoring "my" apps. I have often found that TB likes to also backup HTC Sense, etc. I do not want to restore any system apps since this would more than likely cause a problem with the new rom.
As far as overclocking is concerned, a lot of the newer versions of roms do not use SetCPU anymore. They use the Virtuous overclocking daemon script. This works much faster than SetCPU. Using SetCPU with these roms will disable the daemon. the information on the kernel and the overclocking daemon is usually listed in the first post of the rom thread. You can install Sybergunne's Daemon Controller app if it is not already installed to easily change the settings. Overclock carefully. Every phone is different and not all can go as high as others. Some may run stable at 1.6 GHz and others are only stable at 1.1 GHz.
If you are looking for faster data speeds, then that is already cooked into the roms by the developers, although there may always be some tweaking that can be performed. Speed for data is very subjective, because it really depends on your particular area. Radio's and RIL's make a difference also, but what works for me in my area may not work well for you. It is really a trial and error procedure to find out what works for you.
You are looking for sense roms, so Sense 3.0 and 3.5 are the latest for our phones. Go through the Inspire and Desire HD development threads and read the rom descriptions to see what you like. Almost every DHD rom is made to also work with the Inspire. Links to both sections are posted below. Some rom ideas for you to look at are, Android Revolution HD, Rumrunner, Bindroid, RCMix roms, HoneyWonder roms, Cleardroid, Virtuous Unity, etc., etc. You need to decide which ones you want to try. Ok, that is my mouthful.

The rom comes with kernel but aosp kernels go with aosp (android open source project)=cm7 and sence kernels usually with all sence roms
People sometimes flash alternate kernels than what comes with the rom to experiment and see what the performance behavior is like. ALWAYS make a CWM/Nandroid backup of your rom before you flash any mods or kernels. Usually it does not happen, but sometimes a flashed mod or kernel can mess up your phone so it is good to have a backup in case of problems.
So I've got a 16gig SD and I've had to strip it down because it had 14 gigs of music on it. So after I rooted I took a bunch off. Would it be wise to keep 2 SXS? One I can jam too and another for downloading Rome and flashing? Also I CAN flash CM7 kernels to my Sense roms. Has anyone tried that Beatmod BlissSense. It seems cool but it doesn't seem to want to download. You guys are awesome and have helped me it tremendously. I may not be able to help with your computer problems or anything but if you need any advice on home repair or anything like that Im your guy.

Beatmod BlissSense was awesome. Had some minor bugs for me, GPS signal was a littly nutty and my calls kept dropping. (I reflashed the rom when I found this was happening and the issue seemed to disappear). All in all, it was a great rom but since I'm new to the root thing, the flashing bug caught me and off I went into the xda forums..I'm currently running Android Revolution and of all the roms I've flashed, this is by far my favorite.
What exactly is "freezing" an app mean? I've got an idea I just want to make sure I'm right? Is it wise to delete bloatware apps? Would they come back if I needed to unroot?
Freezing an app is a little like deleting it, but safer. If you delete it, you may find out you have big problems because the system app will not reinstall correctly and you end up reinstalling the rom. With freezing you can take it out but restore it exactly the way it was in the system if things go wrong. If you are backing up your rom like you should in case of problems, then that backup usually takes over a gigabyte of space on your sd card, so it sounds like you definitely need to have another card with more space. You have to be careful what kernel you want to try. If it was written for CM7 it may not work with Sense based roms. Depends how it was coded. You have to research information on the kernel to see if it lists anything specific about proprietary installation. If not, then go ahead and try it. BACKUP YOUR ROM FIRST BEFORE FLASHING.
Nice about to flash HoneyWonder now to see whats up..
I see that wolf has covered you on some damn good topics..
I have flashed lots of roms this honey wonder will be like my 9th lol but it all depends on you and the flashing it will take time to see what you like. As to speeding up your phone like set cpu @ the time I found useful cause you were able to set profiles for phone like when its sleep mode set it for like low power. And when your using it have a higher mhz etc.. But I did use juice defender as an app which to me it worked very good.
But to me I like Roms that do not take up memory lol
So im downloading some ROMs to my newly dedicated SD Just curius if i eed anything other than the roms on there? I mean CWM and all of that should be not only on my phones memory but also in most roms correct? You guys have been a huge help! Im loving this honeywonder but want to play around soe more. I flashed honey with out the inspire fix if you did I would plug your phone back in go to you sd card and delete it out and reflash.
If you have not made a back up in cwm then do so and it will located in your sd card in the folder clock work and then a sub folder called back ups. I myself save that back on my pc just to have.
The 3g icon I had that and its ok.

[Q] NEED HELP!! Im using Samsung Galaxy Y and I want to enhance my phone.

I have a lot of questions. I know the rules here and I already search different things like custom rom/kernel.but when I saw the busybox, terminal emulator, supercharge etc. I felt like my mind was going to explode. LOL!!
So now as a newbie, I dont know where to start, I can search for a specific stufff and follow the steps like having a custom roms/kernels. but I need some advise what should I do first. Like, do I need to have a custom rom/mod first and then do some enhancement later?
I already root my phone and I already made the back up using cm recovery.
offcourse Im still using stock rom/kernel.
And lastly I dont have a laptop/computer. So for the links/files/attachments Im just using this phone to download those stuff.
So Im hoping that someone can give me a headstart. Thanks
You can use mods with rooted stock ROM and kernel but upto a limit. For example you cannot overclock your CPU but can control its frequency within the limits.
I would suggest you to go for a CyanogenMod ROM. It will give you more customization options than you'll need included in the ROM itself.
Sent from my Karbonn using xda app-developers app
ok so mod is for customization right? like I can updgrade my OS to ICS?
actually my goal here is for me to play the games which are not compatible on my phone. like Inotia 4 etc.
Im just wondering why those games are not cpmpatible. Is it because of my OS? which is Gingerbread?
And what is OverClock? you said its for the CPU stuff so that means it could increase the speed of my phone right?
By the way, everytime we reply or make some msg we really need to input these "Captcha"?
There may be many reasons why a game/application is not compatible with your phone, may be because of your phone's hardware configuration or even just because of the dpi (dots per inch - in simple words how big everything appears on your display) of your device.
Yes overclocking means increasing your processors speed above the rated (allowed) value. Its not so safe though, may make your device unstable or even damage it permanently.
Yes for a junior member there are these irritating restrictions.
Sent from my Karbonn A26 using xda app-developers app
Ok now I got it..
Alright so I think it's already on my phone. The screen was too small so maybe even if I use ChainFire 3D it won't help haha.
And even if I change my Mod/Kernel it won't help me. I watch the videos of CM7/CM9 and there's a lot of bugs.
So I think the best way is to buy a different phone that will give me good specs. LOL
But I still have a question, is there a way to improve our wifi connection for the phone? like using root or something?
because even if I have a better phone I still need to have a good wifi connection. Im currently using 1mbps haha.
Im searching for some apps in the market but I can't trust those apps. Do you have any suggestion to improve internet speed?
Thanks in advance man!

First and foremost
1. Read all posts in a thread make own judgement. No ready reckoners here.
2. In your case try restoring cwm backup first then do all sorts of things.
3. Dont get carried away by threads. Many are experienced so not all posts will have basic details.
Eg: Take backup of your EFS partition that contains your IMEI using galaxytoolbox app from playstore. This is not mentioned as pre requisite to ROM flashing.
Loosing imei is like losing phone. Finally its a phone and not playstation.
Get galaxy grand for gaming. I see.myvfriend immersed in temple run and aeroplane pilotting.
I can suggest dr driving raging thunder 2 for sgy with good 3d graphics. You have lot of options in gaming too.
Remember "All that glitters are not gold".
We friends are here to help see you already got so many responses lucky fellow.

Recommendation for a Newb

Hi there I am a newb to ROMs and I have what I think is an easy question.
My girlfriend has a Nexus S which has gotten incredibly slow lately.
There dont seem to be extra apps running on the phone (i tried uninstalling almost all of the apps) so I assume I need to try a different rom/kernel (everything is stock of whatever was pushed to her phone).
I dont think she would care about extra features but would just want it reliable.
I really dont know what to install. If it should be some paired down rom/kernel, A new one, or older one.
I imagine a newer kernel (i think they have trim??) and paired down would be better.
Although using and old build for reliability/speed would be completely acceptable too.
Are there any recommendations? I am pretty lost.
Thank you so much!
Using Slim atm
Pretty smooth if you don't enable google now.
However the 512mb ram is really killing the phone, takes ages to load apps let alone multitask

ok so the different roms/kernels have a pretty big effect then I take it.
Its my gf's phone so i cant go about trying tonnes of different setups. She wants it to just change and then be fine to use for a few years.
Greenify looks interesting.
do the themes affect speed/ram usage?

Themes/theming can affect speed/ram.. If you want a rom to stand the test of time; MDO, Rasbeanjelly, Hellybean, Slimbean (4.1.2).. If you upgrade past this, the 4.2.2's are laggy and ram hungry.. 4.2.2's are also not as stable. Jellyshot and Rasbeanjelly are the most stable/ram friendly 4.2's... Use stable/or stock kernels and don't overclock!!! Once you set up the phone, it's a phone, all the "settings" don't make the phone any more or less a phone...
Sorry folks, recommendation for best rom threads get closed, why? because history shows that almost all of them become arguments over what rom is "better" and essentially, that is something that can only be determined by individual users.
Members are expected to read the thread in development to determine what is "best" for them.
