Confused - General Questions and Answers

I've flashed a cm rom on my phone and I was just wondering how I move my files to the recovery menu now as I don't have a 'my files' app on my phone??

In every ROM there is (or there should be) a file explorer, but if you want to move file from sd to system you must have root permissions and a specific app that can do it (as Root Explorer from google plays).

Download any file manager from Google Play. If you want to access the root features of it you should download root file explorer.

[Q] Best file manager for Android?

Which is the best file manager on Android platform? Now I use the eFile app, but it has some deficiency (cannot write/delete root files, strange way of sorting the files, etc.). I've tried at least 15 file manager apps, but I haven't find yet the best. I need basic file handling (copy, move, etc), unzip/zip, unrar, modify on root, small size (yeah, X8 with 200 MB phone memory). So which is the best?
Have you tried androzip? It's great for archiving tasks. I'm using it in conjunction with astro.
Root explorer is what you need if you want total control over your entire file system.
There are .apk around here somewhere.
I use ES File Explorer, it knows everything (maybe except unrar) and it's free. You can set it to be a root explorer and you can mount the partitions from within the app

I've tried androzip, ES and Astro, but they cannot extract rar files. This is very important for my work, I always receive emails with rar attachment ( rar is the official compression method in my company)
I've no experience with root explorer, but i will try it

Use unrar Or unrar pro.

Yes, is my favorit also

I love ES File Explorer. It is best for me, to manage files from my computer over W-LAN.
Aksi sometimes i am using Root Explorer.
I would recommend Astro File Manager.
Another vote for Root Explorer.

+1, for all your files' needs
for navigating to my sd card and installing apps I use Astro File Manager, and for system management, permissions... creating folders etc.. I use Root Explorer.
I've tried a few but I use ES File Explorer. Just my preference to manage files with. Well I use that and AndroZip of something needs decompressing. Is root explorer just for your root folder for your phone or does it have access to all.folders? Probably a silly question.

Yes. It gives you access to everything. When in root folder just scroll down to/sdcard/ to access your sd card contents.
Definately Astro for me

[Q] How do I find the system/media folder on my Droid X?

My Droid X is rooted and I was wondering how I could change my Boot up Animation. I've read you have to copy and paste in the system/media folder to replace the old Boot Animation.zip but I can't find the system/media folder. I am running Gingerbread on my Droid. If anyone could help me solve this problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
You have to use root explorer from the market to access that directory on your phone... you can navigate to your SD card and copy the file then back to the root directory, in there there is a folder called system, then subfolfer media... in upper right corner is a button that says mount r/w change it to r/o and paste file, overwrite existing... all set

Root Explorer is not the only file manager that can do this.
There are a number of root enabled file managers in the market. ES File Explorer, Super Manager, Jrummy's ROM Toolbox. Any number of others.
The point is that you do need a file manager that is 'root enabled' to access those system directories.

That's good to know, I didn't know there were other apps for that, I've only used root explorer (I bought the paid version, so I'll stick with it) but if anyone asks now I can give them more options

system\customize\resource\bootanimation.zip It is not on the sd card. Use a file explorer like Root Explorer, Astro File Manager, or ES File Explorer to see and edit files in the system folder.
You're going to need a file manager that has root access. Astro File Manager does not. Root Explorer or ES File Explorer do. Use either of those to put the zip in the directory Agoattamer gave you. You may also need to change the permissions on the file. Not exactly sure if that's necessary or what exactly the permissions should be, but it's something to look at if the animation doesn't work.
I'll be damned. I use Root Explorer myself. By far the best and simplest in my opinion, although it is a paid app. And yes you have to tap on "mount R/W" to alter files in the System folder. I suspect in ES File Explorer (free) you have to do the same. Both require SuperUser.
But I always thought Astro File Manager was able to edit system files. If you do a web search there are so many websites and forum threads stating to use Astro to change permissions and edit system files. Wrong. Although it can see system files it can't mount the system folder as Writeable, only Readable. It does not ask for SuperUser permissions. Guess I will never install that app on a rooted phone.
Thanks sharksfan7 for pointing me straight.
Appreciate it guys!

how do I see an apps "technical" name?

Like the Amazon app is com.amazon. the kindle app is com.amazon.kindle.
Thanks!
If you're rooted you can use a file explorer ( I use ES File Explorer) go to root directory then /data/app. Should be a list of all of these technical names.

[Q] Astro file manager?

I am running Darthstalker X1 rom and I need to remove the file SDM.apk from system/app file, but when I choose it in Astro and hit delete nothing happens. I also have tried to rename files with Astro and it won't do that either. Is this normal for Astro? What file manager app do most of you use?
Thanks,
Glenn
Edit: I was able to download File Manager (free) and gave it super user access and then was able to delete the apk. I have not figured out how to grant Astro Super User access through SuperSU yet though???
I know when I use root explorer I have to mount as RO before I can make changes. I'm not sure if astro allows this. If not use esfile explorer its free and I know that works.

What you are trying to requires root access. ES file explorer is one app that allows you to do that for free. There are others but you may have to pay for it.
I'm not the type of person to shy away from spending money on ApPs. However the app I use the most is 1 of the only ones that actually is free. ES file Maneger is the only one I've ever used. I Tried the rest but found this 1 to be a perfect solution. Just make sure you enable root access and system read write permission under settings. You can't go wrong
