Just perm rooted. what now? - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just rooted my phone a few days ago and am kind of overwhelmed with all of the different possibilities. I have cm7.2 running perfectly and have overclocked my phone to around 1.5 ghz. I want to make my shift have the look and feel of a galaxy s2 for a week or two now. I really like the widgets, icons, and just overall appeal. Plus, rooting has got me feeling adventurous. so, any ideas?

I'd suggest trying stone different roms out. My old standby is supreme sense (sense2.1 + 3.0). Ben using it since our came out and always end up going back. Newsense (sense 2.1) is kickass. You could try ICS. I was always a big fan of MIUI due to all the customizations. There is so much I'd say just dive in. Try em out one by one. There's even u.k.e. as well as all the new stuff posted by like joy os and coredroid. It will really just come down to personal preference. And if you really can't choose which to try first just go right down the list lol

If you like the setup you're on now and don't want to change, try searching for a cm7 theme. I'm sure there is a touchwiz theme somewhere.

Well, I looked for a touchwiz theme and couldn't really find anything. But, I did find find a post on SinfulAndroid about getting Galaxy-ish widgets. These don't have that feel that I'm looking for, though, so wasn't really useful.

I think zenulator had a flashable touchwiz zip for ics over on his cm9 thread

Thanks for everybody's advice and help. But after a day's worth of browsing around the forums and trying everything I could, I think I have something I'll be happy with, for a while at least.

That Rusty Metal theme kicks ass. I'd love to port them, alas I don't know how!
i would love to try these but i dont have lots of experience ive only done light porting
Well, I sent PMs to the creators of the themes, but it will be tough for them to do since they don't have the phone.
yea im good at replacing png files but when it comes to when files dont add up and different xml files im clueless
rusty metal eoll be a difficult port because the g1 is mdpi

That Rusty Metal one is the perfect one for us scrapbookers. I would love to get that one.
yea, these are not a cinch to port since they are for mdpi, as pointed out
its definitely possible though, i may look at it this weekend, but its going to be time-consuming and a royal pain in the arse
I'd just be happy for more themes don't care what they are..was visiting the evo and desire forums..good stuff they got going over there man would those be easier to port rather than g1 themes?

i could probably port them too. im running cm6 test8 (pure vanilla version, made by me). just post links and either me or invisiblek could do something with it.
try to stick with hdpi themes, like ones from the evo/nexus....they are wayyyyyyyyyyyyy easier to port.porting themes from an mdpi device (like the hero, eris, g1, mytouch, mtslide, etc) is bigger pain in the ass than you can imagine

You will never guess what I found in the marketplace! Just for the heck of it I typed in rusty metal and got 2 things. Says they need Open Home to work. Is that a G1 thing or can we download it and use it on our Incredible's?

OK. I did some digging.
I found "More Vintage Less War" ported to the Nexus One here:

That was it, though. I checked the Evo, Desire, and Nexus One forums, and that was the only one of the three I found. I'd still donate to get all three, but one is a good start.

I will port what needs to be added so you get the full look on Froyo.
Edit: Done trying it out now. Needs a little work but, I like it...
This has only been tested on Sky Raider 2.2, should work on other froyo roms. Backup then use at your own risk.
1. For the Rusty Metal theme you can use Open Home Full plus the Rusty Metal theme thats on market w/ my Rusty_Metal_Incredible_froyo.zip.
or
2. My Rusty_Metal_Incredible_froyo.zip with Better Cut and Launcher Pro.
I'm uploading it now, we should start another thread for it though. Right?

That won't change the framework though, will it? Also I much prefer launcherpro
Thanks by the way
Edit: Just to clarify, I am less concerned about icons/launcher dock, etc. I can do that already with LauncherPro. I was more concerned with the notification bar, and other framework-related pieces of the theme. Is that what you meant by "what needs to be added"? If so, I love you.

Any chance of getting a port of the more vintage less war one? I would imagine it'll be easier since it's already been ported to n1. And thank you rusty metal looks epic. Yes it should have its own thread.

[Q] Why Should i Root?

I have been looking around for an insentive to root my driod x, the incentive im looking for is a good ROM with good themes. However i can not find one. Im looking for something either sense like, Iphone like, or just a very different style thats not like the regular stock ROM or like ADB/Launches Pro.
So why should i Root? if you know any good themes or Roms please post links to them.
if u dont know why u should root maybe u shouldnt...
but id go with rubiX or liberty 1.5
right now im rockin liberty on my droid x, and i just flashed my wifes droid 2 on liberty...
there was a very long thread on this actually. it amazes me that people dont use the search option. and computer dreams is right, if you dont know what it does, you shouldnt do it. plus this should be in the general section since its neither a theme, nor an app.
root?
I also agree with computer dreams. You should do as much research as possible. There is so much you can do with the DX after rooting. Rubix is an excellent choice for a ROM as well. Smooth, fast, and has different themes. Know what you are doing before attempting. This can all be as easy or as hard as you decide to make it.

touchwiz 4 port for infuse??

im wondering if anybody will port touchwiz 4 to the infuse its on just about every other phone and i know the infuse is relatively new still, but we have a few roms already and lots of dev that was done faster than normal so i don't see why it would take long to port a launcher. im not a dev so i don't really know but i would love if the tw4 launcher would come to infuse.

yes it was done on the vibrant for 2.2 so it is posible, just needs some libs and i think a framwork or services.jar mod or something. nopcodex indicated it might added to his bionix infinity rom. i wouldnt be surprised if mikey mike does the same.
touchwiz 4 features??
Hi all,
I am from india. i wanted to know whether the touchwiz 4 is modified for infuse or is directly taken from samsung galaxy s2?
I am asking this coz in touch wiz there is 3G 324M integration for Native video calling using phone calls as 3G services.
waiting for the reply!?!?

Try that. I used it for about a week it's actually quite smooth
I love this launcher, they have made so much progress with it. Very smooth.
You can back-up your homescreen and other pages so after you flash a new rom and reinstall your apps you go into the launcher settings hit restore! Voila all your pages/homescreen are back to your preferences. It even puts your widgets back where they belong!
Love it! I'll never flash without it!

I use this launcher as well and its great when it works, but at least a couple of times a day for no reason at all it will slow down and/or freeze up and I have to wait for abit for my phone to respond again. And sometimes it will crash as well and my phone will reboot.
Yeah, that happened to me too.
I love 4.0, but I couldn't stand that random reboots so I went back to Launcher Pro. I think I read somewhere that the reboots happen when your phone uses too much resources.
Using go launcher ex myself. A lot of themes online and it has the option to back up the launcher so that after a flash you can go right back to your home screens

Soo umm.. What now?

So I recieved my infuse last night, I have downloaded all of my nescassary apps, but now I dont know what to do/or download. Any tips? Or some apps/ themes to download?

Next is root your phone and decide if you want to place a custom Rom on your device.
If you want to place a custom Rom - just read the development section for a few days until you get a feel for what going on -then proceed from there..
I was thinking of that, I rooted my lasnt android, and it gave me major problems, lose all contacts, camera not work, bootloop etc...
Sent from amazingly huge Samsung Infuse.
Rooting can *lead* to problems but not actually *cause* problems. Only improper flashing and modding can lead to issues. Good news for you though - rooting is not required to get enjoyment out of your device. I should know. I didn't root my Infuse for the first month I had it. I just didn't see the need to do so.
So, what exactly is it that you're trying to do?
Just make it the most enjoyable and personal as it can get. Im gonna end up rooting it eventually. But not now.

Download Appbrain from the market. It's free. You can see popular apps of the day (I almost always find at least one or two to download whenever I go through the entire list) and it can provide recommendations based on what you have installed.

The best way to experiment with finding them is to search what it is and peruse the results. If you saw a calendar widget, search calendar widgets (and other search terms that might turn up results) and sometimes you'll be able to find them. Otherwise, just quote the post and ask the name of whatever you want. Sometimes the poster will answer, and often times, if someone else knows, they'll answer.
And another question. When I use different launchers, launcherpro for example, they are all very laggy, so are there themes that dont need launchers?

LauncherPro is a bad example. It hasn't been updated in a year. Try a different launcher. I recommend ADW EX. Lots of people like Go Launcher. You could always stick with the TouchWiz launcher too if you want. There's nothing wrong with the TouchWiz launcher. Themes don't generally require a specific launcher unless their respective dev says so.
Like others have said, the best way to find what you like is to simply try things. Become familiar with tools that you can use to backup and restore your setup in case you run into things you don't necessarily like.

In all honesty if I could some how convince Amazon to let me to a return I would probably do the same. Not because of the specs and not because I don't love my Infuse but because there will probably be better community support in the form of more devs and longer support.

I was using launcher pro for awhile and liked it, felt like it wasn't that laggy at all. It just didn't have the ability to customize as much as say ADW or Go, but just before I replaced it they did an update that improved a lot of things, and you can now do mass customization. Currently tho i'm using Crazyhome as my launcher and I really like it.

[Q] Infused or MIUI

i am currently running the infused rom on my infuse 4g and i am noticing a lot of people talking about the MIUI rom. can someone tell me the big differences in the roms that makes them stand out from eachother. which one is more user friendly and such. i have uploaded a screenshot of my homescreen using go launcher ex.
really no replies yet? c-mon people help me out. i have been looking around and found a new rom that looks amazing. i am not a total noob at this stuff i know what i am doing. the new rom that i am looking at is called sensation rom and it looks amazing kudos to the guy that designed it. if you are running it please feel free to fill me in about it too. i am looking to flash a new rom soon and want to know what is the best that i can get for my infuse. here is the link for the sensation rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1325177
again all the help i can get from here would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS
you can wait longer than an hour lol
to get an idea of how the roms are different, you can watch some videos on youtube.
miui is a big change from most roms, it's probably best to just flash and see if you like it. it's not like flashing is permanent

the sense Rom is good, i will leave it at that.
i dont like to hype Roms, cuz they are different for everyone....you may not like the features on one while someone else absolutly loves them. Miui is the MOST customizable rom that is out there. Cm7 is a great Rom as well. i can find good things to say about most roms i have tried on the infuse. and i have Tried them ALL...lol
i say flash away, if your not a Noob - i know your not scared of a brick right.
take the time and see if you like it, if not Flash another and another and for ****s and giggles flash another.
trial and error is the only way to really see if a rom works for you.
It's al about personal opinion man, in my opinion, you should backup your current rom and then flash miui and give it a try. the worst that can happen is that you won't like it and all you have to do is restore from your backup.
Its just two ROMs..!! And you are on Infused. Try out MIUI for a couple days and keep what you liked more.

I've just flashed to MIUI. This is purely my opinion alone.
- It's has a very clean interface with no "crapware" at all. I've to install everything from scratch. That's a plus point anyway.
- And there's multitude of customization that can be done. From themes, to settings, etc.
- But the thing that I don't really like is all my installed app sitting pretty on the home screen.
- I do notice that it's faster than the original infuse interface. Faster browsing too.
- I think it has problems handling more than 4 gmail accounts and Google voice seem to be working erratically.
Apart from that, everything works fine and I'm still figuring it out further.
Think of MIUI as a REALLY REALLY GOOD knock off of iOS.
its CM7 with a skin. lol. basically.

youtube would be a great idea if i werent at work where it is blocked. haha. but thanks for all your help everybody. i may flash MIUI just to try it out. thanks!
Personal preference tbh.
so just to cover my ass a little, if i make a backup of my current rom using rom manager and i dont like MIUI i can always restore from the backup that i made? and when i do decide to get MIUI what and where should i get it from?
MIUI is in the developers section of the infuse forums. It is usually on the first page due to so many people posting on it, it isn't hard to find.
well i did it. i flashed to MIUI and i am going to see if i like it. so far i am not happy. i had my phone to backup all my contacts to google and it didnt and i even moved them to my sim card. so i lost all my contacts. but all in all its going to take some getting used to. will either upload pics at some point or maybe make a video to help people like me who are a lil iffy on rom flashing.
thanks guys for all your help!
I've been running MIUI for 3 weeks now and I LOVE it.....sleek, customizable, fast, faster browsing than stock....but I would recommend trying both to find the one that works for you

All I know is I LOVE Infused GB rom
I tried Serendipity, and HATED it. Flashed Infused back immediately. The swype is outdated, and the look and feel is god-awful. Plus, I refuse to keep a ROM on my phone called "Serendipity" terrible...just awful.
Never tried MiUI
just get Infused. GTG is the man.
