Who else is buying SGS III @ full retail price - Verizon Droid Charge

I have a promo plan that was offered to me by vzw in an email back in november 2010.
59.99 for 450min and unl texts
9.99 for unlimited data
69.99 total plus taxes and fees which my employee disc offsets.
How would adding a line work?
Never mind just spoke with verizon. adding a line is out of the question. They will force me off my plan killing my unlimited data.
I guess its full retail for me

Why dont you wait for a quad code LTE phone to come to the states before buying the SGS3 at full retail..I would buy the quad core at full retail, IMO.

If it. Is unlocked this will be my next phone
I've had an upgrade. since november and another one coming in January

Droid charge lags big time. Lags between Switching apps. Tweaked 2.1 is great but development can only do so much with a 1ghertz 500mb of ram.

I see what your saying but the lag is not that bad. 500/600$ doesn't justify that lag. Buy a laptop with that money.

I can wait until January when I have an upgrade. My Charge is pretty snappy for what I use it for. I played with my buddies Razer MAXX and was not overly impressed. I thought the speed would blow me a away, but it didn't. The screen looked signficantly worse (must be the pentile)
Only complaints with the charge:
1) Browsing non-mobile enabled sites could be smoother. Droid maxx did not really fix this!!!
2) Occasional launcher lag (even with home_app_adj fix).
Things I want in my new phone:
1) 4.3-4.8" "Retina" screen.
2) Instant shutter on camera.
3) 1080p hdmi out
4) Battery life to last all day.

And porn

FULL RETAIL IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!

I think I'm stealing my aunts upgrade for the SGS3. Her basic phone is at least 3 years old now and I don't see her upgrading any time soon anyways. If Verizon follows the other price plans I will get the 16gb for $200 and throw in a memory stick.

That's what I did. Used another lines upgrade to get the Charge cause I didn't want to wait on the Bionic and had to get off my BB Storm. I made the right decision.

Yeah right. I just checked E-Bay. They want between $752 and $856 for one. I'll pass.

GS3 is not nearly enticing enough to lose my unlimited. My upgrade is well after the new pricing so any new phones are going to have to be really, really sweet. I don't think I'm willing to lose unlimited, so I presume I'll be getting off-contract devices. I hope VZW doesn't wanna screw those of us with expired contracts.
I find it a bit unfair that some people have the option of locking into a 2-year on unlimited a new, fast phone, whereas others upgrades will be available just after the unlimited is gone.
I guess that is just how the chips fall. The question is, I suppose, will VZW screw customers who pre-order the GS3 out of unlimited?
I didn't want to turn this into an unlimited data debate, but a phone would have to be something truly special to purchase outright at full retail or lose unlimited over.

Hmmm, I have an upgrade on my netbook but that doesn't have unlimited. The charge that has unlimited gets an upgrade in Jan.
Could I use the netbook upgrade then switch the SIII to the charge's number and have unlimited on it?
I really got burned when I bought the charge (and the GF's Tbolt) because I didn't want to loose unlimited. I walked out of the store $700+ poorer then Verizon backtracked on the ending of unlimited going from 3g to LTE.
I'd like to upgrade but with tweaked I don't have to. I just don't want to get burned again. I was quite pissed with my last 2 upgrades. The time before I was lied to by the sales guy about tethering and ended up with a Storm2 and a netbook.

I have an upgrade in July. I'm definitely gonna jump on this phone. I would wait for a quad-core or the next nexus, as I'm more than happy with the Charge, but I'm worried about the switch to shared data. The support for the SGS3 should be great, given that it's going to be released by all major carriers.
Big thanks to imnuts, dwith, nitro, jt, our resident themers, et al., for spending their own time to make our experience with the Charge better!

Wait on the Nexus
As a fassy refugee I am done w Sammy for now. If you get an SGS 3 and have call quality issues you were warned here first, happened on my last 2 Sammy phones. Waiting for one of the 5 nexii that are supposed to be released this fall, hope HTC has another One X caliber phone in that mix.
Hoping to go full GV and data plan only, sick of paying for cell minutes I don't use.
EDIT: Yes, and thanks to Nitro, Imnuts, JT and all the others for helping us with our Charges.

I'm totally on this one. I love my Nexus One, but I'm craving something with a little more power. A 2nd gen Snapdragon should be fine for me for around 2 years, especially since I'm using the money I make flipping my Nexus One to put towards a new tablet (hopefully a dual core HTC Honeycomb tablet). I'll still tinker with my phone a lot, but I want a tablet to be my next droolworthy device.
So yeah, I'll be at my local AT&T store when they open on the 13th to get mine. Can't wait to see CM7 and ADW EX running on that sexy hardware.
Moved to general as not android development
I'm definitely getting one!
I always had HTC phones and I loved them all. Made the switch to a Blackberry last year because of work now I can't wait to put the Blackberry in storage for the Inspire
By the way, I read that the non-commitment price would be $499. Is that confirmed?
Just wish it had a Front Facing camera That's the only thing that is making me want the Atrix/Infuse over the Inspire
I'm just gonna buy one retail, that's how I get most of my phones nowadays anyway. I'll save my contract renewal for something big. I'm fairly excited for this device

radio shack is having a pre-order for the Inspire from now until the 9th. you have to buy a $50.00 gift card to secure your order, they are selling the phone for $99.00 with no mail-in rebate. you also get a $30.00 store credit for using to buy accessories for the phone. you have to buy the $25.00 data plan as well. I already have the $30.00 unlimited and I asked if I get to keep it and they said yes (we will see)
"I already have the $30.00 unlimited and I asked if I get to keep it and they said yes (we will see)" - I really hope we don't get screwed into this 200mb cap...
I'm getting one - 8 more days guys!
It all depends on weather the 30 dollar unlimited data plan was already on a smartphone if not they will move you to the 2gig 25 dollar data plan

I plan on waking up at the ass-crack of dawn and heading to the local AT&T Corporate Store 15 or 20 minutes before they open to pick one up the 13th.
My upgrade isn't up until the 8th so I can't preporder yet, I don't think. Talk about nice timing for an upgrade though!
Those those talking about your unlimited data plan and if you're going to lose it...
No, you won't.
AT&T is trying to tell me that I, a current iPhone user, with unlimited data, will lose it when I move to the Inspire. Well, they're wrong.

A: If you were on a Smartphone Data Unlimited plan prior to June 7th, 2010, and would prefer to keep it, no problem! Even if you choose to upgrade to a new Smartphone and/or extend your contract. You may choose to move from your unlimited plan to either a DataPlus or DataPro plan. However, once you have moved to a DataPlus or DataPro plan, your old unlimited plan will no longer be available.

Honestly I hate the whole 1230mAh size too.
And in regards to the FFC I don't really see the point of it other than the 3 second WOW factor when first buying.
If that is going to save us from spending an additional 50 - 100 dollars Id rather save that money for something else.
I've been snooping around and it seems as if in the U.K. there are Desire HD aftermarket batteries with 1500 mAh.
I don't see why they can't sell/make them available in the U.S.
For $99, and even less if you buy through RadioShack because of the FREE $30 gift card you can't go wrong.

HTC TB from Verizon

Went into the local store yesterday. Played with the new TB I like the larger screen. I can't believe how cheap verizon has gotten. I have not used my NE2 in a long time but was suprized to hear only $50 now and no longer $100 off. I have the HTC DINC running Skyraider 3.5 now and avab to use the NE2 now.
What our your all's opinions... I don't think the 2 year contract and getting the NE2 is worth it anymore. I would rather pay more and do the 1 year and be able to upgrade sooner. Am I missing anything on the NE2 what give's and what are the Bennie's?
They offered me $100 for my DINC... I told him no way. I would rather keep it for testing. LOL
Also I want to help the Dev's what's the best way to donate and to who??? Stupid question???
I assume the battery is the same for the DINC and the TB because the EVO is the same battery as the DINC??? I could be wrong. Can't see the battery in the Verizon store because they have the alarm system glued to it so you can't run out the store with it.
From what I understand the battery is different. I did a two year so that I'll have unlimited 4g for at least that period.

I am not in a 4G area and don't care about 4G. I just like the bigger screen like the EVO. If the DINC had the same size screen I would just keep it.
So signing two year agreement IMHO is a waste if they are not going to make it worth while and give more of a discount.

Switch phone before eligible date

What's the easiest way to get a new phone from Verizon before the eligible date? Even a different model, and flagship phone. I've been a customer since 2003.
When is your eligible date supposed to be? Usually as long as you have fulfilled 1 year since your last upgrade they will do an early upgrade for you. Only downside is that it has to go through verizon and you cant get any of the costco or amazon deals
Another option would be to open a new line on your plan and then later down the road drop one of the older lines.

Yup pretty dumb i think... Actually its an extra $40... $10 for the line and $30 for data.... Unless you have the cheapest data package.
Only $10 a month. I used this trick and just don't have a smartphone active on the spare line. It was cheaper to add a third line to our account to get a second Charge instead of paying full retail.

The quickest way to irritate a retail representative is to state how long you've been a customer. LOL That's true for any industry. Yes you've been paying for a service, but you've also been provided that service at a price you agreed to. Just a heads up, don't start the conversation with "I've been a customer since 2003."

Yeah that **** is annoying, I get that a lot. (Its ok to ask but dont keep pushing it and storm off like a little baby because you didnt get your way.) Theres nothing we can do as reps, maybe give you a little discount but we cant override upgrade dates and stuff.
We can call our main department and they wont even do anything unless your a week before your upgrade date.
I just was able to put through an early upgrade in the place of what would have been my third Charge. The first one was a replacement for the Fascinate, which I had had two of. I told them I was tired of Samsung products in general and they offered me the option.
I was one month from the year mark of the last renewal, and (since all of the phones so far were CLNR's) about the same from going out of warranty. Hopefully the Bionic is a phone I can feel confident in keeping for a year and a half or so. If not, there's a Vigor/TBolt 2 with my name on it.
I'm definitely getting the new Galaxy Nexus or Nexus prime, but I just switched to Verizon and got the Droid Charge on Day #1. I'll probably have to pay retail (which for the phone will be worth it). Do I have to call in Verizon and have them know I switched phones? Or should I just pop the LTE sim card into the new one (whenever that is) and be done with it that way?

You SHOULD be able to just switch the SIM. That should update your account with the IMEI of your new phone. I'm not 100% positive, though.

They buy a phone at the discounted price then switch their phones but leave their new line open. So they pay $10 instead of $40 because their is no phone on the line. I do something similar to this, and I use all of my lines upgrades and my kids get my last phone.

So wait.
I can add a line for $10.00 and buy, say, the new Samsung Nexus phone, but not buy data? Verizon does not require that a customer buy Data and I get the smartphone at the discounted price (which I can then swap to my data enabled ph#)?

Verizon is out to get us.

Obviously the new data plans following suit of the other carriers in killing unlimited, reducing data costs to Big Red is nothing new. The fact our Thunderbolts have been having all kinds of data drop issues (regardless of ROM) is just evident they're even further making efforts to eff us in our rears. I've been eligible for an upgrade for some time but am obviously holding out to maintain my unlimited.. but now I find myself trying to find a Verizon phone elsewhere (craigs list, ebay, etc) just so I don't have to upgrade via Verizon.
Is it true even if we purchase another phone on our own, in activating it, they'll force the change?
Anyone have any recent ROM/radio recommendations that are stable? I swear, it doesn't matter what I flash, my TB is slowly dying and I the conspiracy theorist in me tells me Verizon has placed some moles in the dev community to eff up our stuff (unlikely but possible).
You will only lose your contract if you use your upgrade with them. You can activate any compatible phone on your current contract without losing any of the features (unlimited data) the only exception being for anyone currently on a 3g device cannot activate a 4g phone.
I am using SkyRaider and average around 5gb a month of data usage and haven't noticed any more data lag or drops than normal.

Saying they're out to get us doesn't mean I don't understand their position or their motives, haha. Heck, I'd do the same thing. Glad to hear though that I can still get my own devices and activate under the same plan, that alone can keep me on Big Red so it's much appreciated. I'll also check out SkyRaider, last I tried, I had issues but don't remember what they were. Thanks all.
They aren't 'out to get us'. They just want to give you as little as possible while charging as much as possible. The fact that there isn't competition in the cellular market means no one is fighting for customers. Just wait 2 or 3 years and Verizon will be broken up like AT&T before... If we're lucky that is.

They are definitely and obviously in the this game for PROFIT, MONEY, DINERO, MOOLAH, etc,......!!!
Look at the hard facts.
Quite eye-opening really, in case you didn't have a real picture as to HOW much they are really making on us while giving us less.
I just don't think I'll ever appreciate them removing Unlimited data. It may help some people.
But It doesn't make things cheaper or better in my situation, but so long as I can buy retail and not ever be forced over, I'll stay.
The day they force me into a new contract after my current one is up, I'm out.
Just thought I'd post that link for their earnings report from this Quarter, as they just released it and it pretty well sums up this thread.
Just talked to Vzn cust serv, they said (for whatever it's worth) that if you upgrade using the disc phone price, you'll be switched over OFF unlimited. To keep unlimited you csn purchase Vzn offered phone at full retail w/out contract, or privately purchase any Vzn compatible phone and activate w/out contract. I asked what stops Vzn in three months from saying "you have no contract with Vzn, buy our new plan or we'll drop you"... She said, nothing stops them from sayinv that, Vzn isn't bound by a contract. Either way, my TB runs so well, I have no problem keeping it another year, maybe two!
Running Thundershed v1.6_CM7.2, imo lean kernel 6.2.1 (#1 normal -undervolted, 184-1408) with the .9 radios... Got 6hrs of uninterrupted use, a few days ago. (Internet, tons of YouTube videos, online games, text/calls, FB, phone gaming, etc. jumping from one to the other) just to see how long it would go. 6hrs 11min with 18% batt life remaining. 15 hrs heavy-moderate use with 29% batt life remaining. This is w/out 4G (not avail here yet) and using Rezound standard batt... Even without the better battery life, the TB works very well in this config, and operates incredibly smooth, and very reliably.
Is it worth running with my smooth TB another year to keep $300 in my pocket and not lose unlimited pkg (upgrade)? Or is it worth keeping $500-600 in my pocket (not paying full retail just to have a newer, slightly better phone)? ABSOFREAKINLUTELY worth it! Well played Quietly Rooted TB, well played.

How about this thought. I'm on a shared 10GB plan with 3 other phones. I noticed that Verizon made sure that there was NO way to disable that stupid backup service that I can find. So it sounds to me like they're TRYING to make people go over their limited data plan if they can.

But It doesn't make things cheaper or better in my situation, but so long as I can buy retail and not ever be forced over, I'll stay.
The day they force me into a new contract after my current one is up, I'm out.

I had a recent experience which may shed some light on the situation. I have a TB with unlimited data, but until recently, that was part of a family plan through my parents (for convenience.) Well, without realizing what they were doing, they got manipulated by a VZW salesperson to change their family plan to the bundled data plan - in exchange for two free smart phones and a free hotspot device. Of course, my unlimited plan went byebye as a result. I calmly called customer service the second I heard they had gotten smart phones and explained that there had been a mistake, and that the plan change was supposed to exclude my phone.
Well, the CS person was very helpful, and offered to remove my line from their account, and restore the unlimited data on a new account under my name, at the 2008 (when I had gotten a smartphone originally) single-subscriber price. It barely took any coaxing, and she was quick to offer me that compromise, after I suggested my parents had been purposefully misled (which I am sure they were - I figure the salesperson gets a bonus for every unlimited line he scraps.)
My point? If they still have the ability to create an entirely new account with unlimited data based on prices from 4 years ago, I am sure that they can still renew the unlimited contracts if given a good enough reason. I suppose the trick is coming up with a good reason...
You can keep unlimited data as long as you don't get a new subsidized phone. Pay full price for new phone and you can keep unlimited data.

Yeah that's pretty common knowledge by now I think.
My concern is when will that option end?
Once my current contract is up, there's nothing carved in stone that says they won't change things.
They could very well decide to try and force anyone with a smartphone on their network into a new data plan or simply only offer you voice.
I guess I just wonder how long will they allow grandfathered Unlimited data users to keep that, beyond their contract end date.
Nobody really knows.
I guess ill see first .. I'm on month to month right now with unlimited.
Yep, that's the caveat of unlimited data ; no contract. Technically, 5 minutes after you end your contract by buying a full retail phone, or keeping your existing phone (as I plan to do), Vzn can disconnect you and bill you for 5 minutes Obviously they wouldn't do this, but no contract means no promises.

razr maxx is old now yet full retail hasnt changed. does anyone sell brand new smartphones at lower prices as they age? best buy certainly doesnt. I prefer not to deal with private sales through ebay or swappa but would deal with amazon or new egg or a well know dealer online. a brick and mortar store would be my preference but it appears they only put phones on sale with a plan, never put brand new no contract phones on sale.

Yeah Verizon's phone prices are high. The Droid Incredible, till the day it was discontinued, costed $549.99 or whatever full retail, even though new Droid Incredibles were going on eBay for half that. And damn, the Droid Charge is $99 with 2 year contract RIGHT NOW. So is the Galaxy Nexus.
If I can talk a rep into giving me unlimited data or rather letting me keep unlimited when upgrading, well I would not be totally against organized bribing, sort of like tips for waiters and waitresses, of course we know that's not happening.
Too bad Verizon doesn't have an S in its name, I, along with everyone else on here would replace that S with a $ so fast...
Hahaha. Yeah. Verizon wirele$$

Ditching my smartphone

So I wasn't sure where I should post this. But I need some advice.
I just upgraded my phone and signed a two year contract with Verizon in August. However, I am really feeling the need to ditch my smartphone because it's taking up too much of my time away from what's truly important in my life. My wife, kids and work.
What is the best way to get rid of my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and 21 months left on my contract.
I really would like to be able to get a cheap "dumb" phone without having to pay too much.
Anyone have any suggestions of how I could do this?
Hopefully this thread doesn't get shut down.

At least with other carriers, your "contract" is only for the voice portion.
Buy a cheap dumbphone (ebay, craigslist or new), activate it and cancel the data plan.
Done.
Really? I assumed I would have to keep a data plan on this number for the duration of contract.

I can confirm with with AT&T
I was able to cancel my brothers Data plan and switch his phone to the 7.99 plan
to an old flip phone
he broke his phone and didnt' have insurance I called up At&t and they said I was able to alter my plan with no charge
So I sold my S3 and am currently back on my old DX2. I may stay on this for a while. I told myself that I was gonna switch over to an Ifone but I'm not sure that I can bring myself to drop 400 on a 5. I may use the money to buy an Ipad mini on swappa. Crazy that a tablet is cheaper than a phone....
