SMS not showing notifications - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

The last few days I haven't been getting any notifications of sms. I am on stock 1.73, no root, stock sense sms app. No other sms apps installed. It's getting really frustrating when the wife texts me and I don't get it (and even more frustrating for her). I've checked all the notification settings and they're all checked.
Any thoughts on what to do? I think I'm just going to take it back to att and swap it out for a new one.

My first One X did that. I replaced it and my new one notifys me every time.. Return it.

Do you by any chance have the Visual Voicemail app running (either the market or the XDA hacked version). It was preventing my sms form reliably notifying me (about half of the time). Removed, and fixed.

Did you check the settings in the SMS app itself? There are seperate ones for SMS if you go messages>menu>settings>notifications

Ooh I do have this installed, maybe that's it?

Uninstall and should fix your problem. At least that was my solution .

Go to SMS settings the notifications check vibrate on receive.

I just uninstalled my visual voicemail and will see if that helps

My wife and I each have this phone, and we both downloaded VVM app. After a few days I decided to uninstall mine but my wife kept hers, and she isn't getting (or randomly gets) sms notifications. I get all notifications promptly. I am going to uninstall VVM and see if that works. Also both phones are stock and not rooted.

Have this problem as well but don't have the VVM app. Stock 1.7, no root or unlock, no secondary sms apps.

Mine seems hit and miss. Sometimes there will be the flashing light. Sometimes there won't. I just turned on the vibrate when received option to see if that will affect it any.

It's been a while - did uninstalling VVM work for you?
I installed VVM from the .apk that was floating around and she has issues with missing SMS notifications. She'd much rather have accurate notifications than VVM.
Does uninstalling after you've set VVM up have any ill effects? Does traditional voicemail still work OK?
Thanks,
-Brett.

Hey everyone having this issue - I have had this REALLY frustrating issue, with no solution found (and Telstra unable to provide help), so I widened my search to all phones. It appears to be an even bigger issue with some WP7.5 phones if that makes you feel better.
Anyway, what the issue seems to be is as follows:
The SMS message is sent from the carrier and received perfectly according to their reports, and in actual fact it is received perfectly, but here's the catch:
Messagebank does not receive a NEW message, it UPDATES the existing SMS you probably have in your phone!
SOLUTION: It's not a great one, but if you DELETE the Messagebank SMS text message thread every time you have received one and checked the voicemail, the next voicemail you receive will notify you properly as every other SMS does.
Hope this helps someone until a better solution is found (auto-delete voicemial texts anyone?).

Why are you guys still on 1.73?
This got fixed (along with lots of other things) ever since I upgraded to 1.85. If you don't want to upgrade for whatever reason, I heard some people used GoSMS instead and that worked.

[Q] Not receiving Google Voice texts

Anyone else not receiving their text messages through google voice. It was working fine for me when I had my desire. For some reason I never get the texts pushed to me. I have to open the google voice app to check if I have any texts. Thanks in advance.

My next suggestion would be to uninstall the app, and reinstall then. There's really nothing else you can do.
I tried that too. Tried resetting the phone and...I've tried 3 different sensations they all had the same issue. Only work around I found was if I added that gmail account and sync it and then forward the google voice texts to that gmail account. Btw thanks for ur suggestions. I googled the issue found one other person with the issue. Maybe it will be fixed with the 2.3.4 update.
It works fine for me. The only problems that arise are when my connection is shoddy it will not tell me about new texts.. otherwise it works great.
Dunno man. I have a T-Mobile Sensation, Google Voice works great stock, after the 2.3.4 OTA update, and on CM7.
Finally got it to work. It took a few tries of logging out and logging back in. Thanks for all the help guys.

[Q] Cant receive mms?

has anyone got the message "cant not receive pictures, balance too low" well i cant believe i got this and i am on the $55 plan.. this shouldnt be possible. does anyone know how to fix it.?
Have you tried to reactive the phone. I haven't ever had this show up, so I am just W.A.G-ing it here.
It sounds like a problem from VM's side... although I have poked around their MMS.apk and it's hard-coded into the software. So possibly not. Although VM is the first group I would blame.
Second might be wifi. If you have wifi on, disable it, get your 3G working, and try receiving again...
I have had this happen to me a few times, it is a glitch in VM's system. I usually get the message with in a few hours after the error message, it has however taken as long as a week to a month in some cases. My suggestion to you is if it happens again you could try calling VM asap. Personally I just ask whoever it is that sent the message to email me it
SkiZophr3nic~
I have issues receiving MMS as well. I don't get the balance too low message, instead I have to use the stock messenger app rather than handcent (only mostly default settings). Haven't tried tweaking handcent yet to resolve though. If you have handcent try the stock, if the problem exists stock try handcent maybe.
Well I can receive them now. But when I posted this question I didn't take the time to wait it out. It was the least of my concerns. Lol I installed miui 10/30 on triumph. And my mms was and still is working at the moment

[Resolved] Google Voice notifications in the notifications bar

I finally figured out the reason why Google Voice notifications for new messages weren't showing up for me. It turns out to be a stupid bug in GV.
Once I would be done setting up GV, I would go into "Settings" and check the option for "Voicemail display - view and play voicemails from the phone call log". Well, I accidentally found out this is the culprit. I unchecked this today just for the heck of it, and lo and behold GV notifications starting appearing again
This had been bugging me no end for the last month. Hope this helps anybody else in a similar situation.

I can confirm, I noticed this about a week ago. But I also did the fix here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26061058&postcount=2 so I wasn't sure which one did the trick. Either way, glad GV is finally working properly!

Thanks for the tip, but FWIW, I have always that option unchecked and I still have issues with getting notifications. the weird thing for me is that the notifications immediately pop up once I open google voice. I think there is some sort of issue with the app processing correctly in the background, but I'm no dev so not sure how/if you check for coding or troubleshoot how the program is written to interact with ICS.

Have you also tried what I linked to in my post right above yours? Like I said, I did that and what RofSpark said to do and I am getting consistent and immediate notifications of voicemails.

I have tried that, too, yes. For the first couple of weeks, my GV was working fine, notifications and all. I had zero problems after setting it up. But the last 3+ weeks, it has been giving me zero notifications in my status bar until I open the app, and my email notifications (which are how I've been seeing that I have voicemails) are delayed quite a bit.

Are you completely stock or are you running a custom ROM? I'm running Scott's excellent CleanROM SE ver. 2.6 and perhaps this also has something to do with things? I have very little multitasking issues now and things keep trucking nicely in the background...

I can confirm it works on CleanROM DE 3.0, no experience with Scott's SE version however.
I did check with Scott, and he confirmed he does not see any reason why GV notifications would not work with any of his ROMs. In fact, he uses GV too and confirmed that he has not noticed any notification issues on his phone.

I did extensive tests and determined its the "Voicemail display" checkbox that breaks the notifications. The link in your post is absolutely required to correctly set up GV forwarding on the HOX. That is my standard procedure for setting up GV now.

Twice, now, I have uninstalled and disassociated GV from my phone, then reinstalled and redone the entire setup process. I've always uncheck the view and play voicemails in the call log option, as well as used the dialer code for ensureing the voicemail is properly forwarded and GV is used. Nothig has helped my issue.

I am running unrooted and totally stock, save for some disabling of preinstalled crapware. maybe i need to start enabling one AT&T service at a time to see if they help resolve the issue?

Though not very sure, I think I have read a number of people had notification issues around push emails and text messages on the stock ROM. People were either not getting these notifications or getting them quite late. Maybe this is more to do with problems in the notification subsystem of the stock ROM. Do you plan to root and unlock to install a custom ROM? Maybe that's the ticket to get this working.

I'm considering going over to CleanROM at some point. I'm stock now and just updated to 1.85 from the OTA. I waited a few on the update and read some claims that this update helped some of the general notification issues. Doesn't seem to have helped me with GV notifications but ill give it a few days (updated yesterday afternoon). I've been holding off rooting because I'm leery about it effecting my company's IT privileges and forced encryption as I rely heavily on my corporate email and am forced to endure some heavy administrative control due to sensitivity of the client work I deal with.
It does seem that rooting and running a custom rom is the way to eventually go. The devs here are so swift at identifying and fixing these little issues. I just need to take the time to parse through the thousands of posts regarding the custom roms I've looked at and see if they'll work for me.

If it helps I can confirm all notifications are now working for me on Scott's CleanROM DE 3.0. It is a great ROM, very lightweight with most of bloat removed including Sense launcher (replaced by Apex, which is fantastic). Scott is extremely active in addressing any issues and continued development of all his ROMs.
Feel free to reach out to me if you decide to move to this one and need any clarification or help. Good luck.
Yeah, I haven't had any notification problems since I switched to CleanROM.

Thanks a lot for the info and offer. I will most likely look into CleanROM DE later in the week when I have some free time. I've read about it quite a bit, but I am not well-versed in rooting phones and flashing new ROMs, so I will likely need all the help I can get. I am definitely a noob, but I read these boards extensively, so I'll do my research and possibly PM if I've got any specific questions that I can't find answers for when going into a potential root.

[Q] Goodness ROM Issues w/VZW GS3

Hi,
I installed Goodness Reborn v10.0.4.1 (latest version) two night ago and for the most part, all is well except for two things. The first is that I am not able to send or receive file attachments using the built-in Messaging program. I can send/receive text but no attachments. I downloaded another text program from the Google Store for the time being and this one works just fine. I just would rather use the one that came with the ROM. My second issue, if you can call it an issue is that when I receive a call, the flashlight flashes. This is most likely a setting but I can't locate where to turn it off.
I have the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3. Can anyone help me with these issues? It would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Bruce

Can't help you with the messaging app, I use the AOSP messaging app with goodness and it works fine. But I never noticed an issue with the stock one either.
The flash blinking with phone calls is related to the app flash blink. Open goodness settings then open flash blink, go into the preferences tab and turn off the incoming calls.

Goodness Flashlight Issue
Hi,
Thanks for the info about the flashlight issue. It's now fixed. I must have clicked the wrong switch when I was messing with the settings. The messaging issue is really no big deal. I'll just stick with Go SMS for now. It works fine for me.
I appreciate you're quick response to my post. Have a good weekend.

Hangouts MMS Issue - Resolution?

I have read another thread on here with people having the issue of VERY delayed MMS using Hangouts. Just wondering if there is a definitive resolution to this yet, or if anyone even knows what the root cause is? I'm guessing its not the app in and of itself, otherwise one would think it would happen on every device.
Wonder if manually entering an APN would help.
Just looking for ideas...
I will say this. I tested using the stock Messaging app, and everything seems to work as quickly as expected. I love using Hangouts, but perhaps until a proper fix is found, I just need to use the native stock app
I'm also having SMS/MMS issues using hangouts with this phone, seems like even regular SMS messages sometimes take up to 5 minutes to send, and usually send 2 or 3 of the same message, and I'll receive duplicate messages back. It's strange, i had zero problems with hangouts on the previous HTC One using hangouts, hopefully an update or something fixes it.
I'm having no issues

Hmmm.. SMS works flawlessly, but if I try to send to multiple recipients or send a picture, it may take a good five minutes or more. And if you delete the picture, it just pops back up later.
Stock works fine, I just want it all in one
I have no problems with regular SMS with Hangouts. MMS is slow. Think every MMS I've received had to retry before I got it.
This happened when Hangouts was first released when using on the HTC One M7. We're probably going to have to wait for an update from Google before it's fixed.
