[Q] Can anything be used to retrieve files from a Nexus S with USB debugging off? - General Questions and Answers

Yesterday, I dropped my Nexus S on paving and cracked the screen, so I can no longer unlock the phone or interact with it.
There are a few files that I'd like to retrieve from it if I can. It's running stock ICS 4.0.4, unrooted.
I've got as far as installing the SDK and using adb to connect to my old Nexus One (which I've gone back to for now), but of course on the Nexus S I don't have USB debugging switched on or any apps installed to automatically switch on USB mode (even if the phone wasn't screen locked with a pattern).
Somebody suggested there might be a way to get round this (e.g. using fastboot, which I have never used), and if so, that somebody here would know how. If so, please be gentle with me - today's the first time I've even installed the SDK, and although I have a computing degree (nearly 30 years old) and am capable of following instructions, I know nothing about using the SDK tools and my command line / unix knowledge is sketchy and rusty to say the least!
Thanks in advance
Julie

[Q] Nexus 7 - First App Problems

Hi guys,
Me and my flatmate have decided to start trying to make stuff. He is messing around on an Arduino and I'm trying to get the app sorted.
But I've run into problems straight off the bat. I'm trying to write an app and test it on my Nexus 7 but for some reason I cant get the Nexus 7 to communicate with Eclipse. I've spent hours reading through guides - to no avail.
ADB recognises my device. I can see it under ADB devices in command prompt. I've enabled USB debugging and it is in PTP mode. The drivers have all been installed and it is recognised under device manager. But in Eclipse with the basic Hello World app, when I hit run nothing happens. If I use the dropdown menu to hit run as there is no device, just "1 Android Applicaton" and in the console window absolutely nothing is happening (is this normal? This is obviously my first time using any of this and all I know is what I've read since I havn't been able to get anything working).
I just want to get this Hello World app up and running so I can start making some stuff! Any ideas?
Also, the Nexus 7 is rooted using SmoothROM and Franko Kernel.. don't know if that matters or not.
All input is much appreciated Remember, I am only a beginner though!

[Q] S4 Help needed (Warning: Long story)

Hey guys, let me just start off by saying I have spent almost 8 hours straight today trying to figure this out and dig myself out of a hole I've created for myself, that being said, I'm going to try and be as detailed as possible so you guys know EXACTLY where I am and what I've tried. This post looks long but that's because it is. It's pretty much my entire day's worth of trouble typed out. So just bare with me and see if you guys can help me out here!
I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 model: SGH-M919 it has Android 4.4.2. Now on to the problem: I've had this phone for almost a year now and a few months ago I rooted it. Did a simple Youtube tutorial and used Odin to do the work and everything worked out fine. A couple months down the road (yesterday), after using the phone like a teenager, downloading apps and cluttering it up it started to slow down and not run some apps. After thinking about it I decided to factory reset it. All of my contacts, photos, and videos were backed up on Google so I thought "why not?" Well, this is where $#!% hit the fan.. being rooted then factory reset, right before the phone came online it had me answer two questions about the root. Something to the effect of "Do you want to keep root? (This option is not reversible)" I thought since I wasn't using the features I originally rooted the phone for I figured nah just get rid of the root. So the phone did its T-Mobile boot up and started the Initial setup.
Everything up to to this point was fine until I wanted to log in to my Google account during the setup. Please understand that where I am I have full 4G LTE coverage and have access to a pretty fast and sturdy wifi connection. Well, when it came to the google sign in I entered my email and password and it came up with a message reading "Can't Sign in - Can't establish a reliable connection to the server" (believe me i wish that was the only issue) so after reading that, I thought I'd try with my wifi.. nope. Same thing. Since neither my 4g or wifi worked I thought it was Google's servers so I tried again this morning, same thing. (keep in mind at this point i think my phone isn't rooted anymore.) I call the t mobile store and they give me a technical support number, so I call it and I tell them i cant sign into Google. The gentleman told me he cant do anything because he can tell my phones been rooted. Only thing he suggests is to contact Google, well, the customer care number just tells you go to google.com/support and there's nothing there about my problem.
This is where I dig my hole even deeper. I tried another factory reset and up in the top left corner i still see that root text. Even the rooted android symbol pops up before the Samsung logo or t mobile. Since I saw that I thought "ohh it just didn't get unrooted all the way." I look up ways to completely remove a root and a lot of them require plugin your phone into the computer and using Odin to flash a stock firmware on to the device. I went to plug my phone into the usb port but my computer didn't recognize the usb device, having experienced this a long time ago I searched around for the latest Samsung usb drivers and I installed those. Device still isn't recognized. Let me just note before people tell me to use MTP mode or Developer tools> usb debugging or connection mode.. The only thing that happens when plugging my phone via usb is the phone starts charging and my computer makes the trumpet noise like something is plugged in. Other than that, there is NO notification of it being plugged in. The reason i stress this is because I called Samsung technical support at this point and the guy (not gentleman) treated me like a 5 year old and ran me through all of these options after i told him I already did everything he was suggesting, including downloading Samsung Kies 3 and having it install the drivers. It does not pick up the device either.. at this point I looked up ways to remove the root without the computer. I found out you can just go into the root app "SU" or something and theres a remove root option. I jumped on that opportunity and had it removed. I restarted the phone and all the problems still persist, it even still has the root text on the top left when you factory reset it again. However now, even if you factory reset and select the option "keep root," thinking it would bring back the"SU" app it does NOT.
So lets recap. I have a phone that thinks its rooted and even appears rooted to t mobile but doesn't have any of the root apps or privileges or capabilities to fix my Google log in issue (like the host file in filemanager). And I can't re-root to get that app back because none of my 3 usb ports, 3 different usb cables (one being the cord that came with the phone), or any of the ports/cables on someone else's computer will recognize the darn thing to work on that way! I have all these issues that are supposed to fix each other but I can't do any fixing because they cancel each other out too... I'm at a dead end.
In case this isn't the right forum/website/thread/post area etc.. I have this whole message saved in Microsoft Word document so I can repost it anywhere you guys might suggest better results. Any help/advice will be much appreciated.

[Completed] Screen inaccessible(no display) usb debug disabled cmd help

Nexus 5 running 5.1 stock
I had recently and sadly had an accident with my phone where the screen is completely useless. Shattered is a harsh word, but it's sitting in that condition. It does however still turn on. There are parts of the screen that display, but for some odd reason, its completely mirrored and upside down.
I have Android tools and drivers installed. And knowing something like this might happen, I had USB debugging enabled. BUT, for even stranger reasons, I'm guessing it's disabled because through cmd on platform-tools, it says it's unauthorized. Though the little window of display my phone pushes, I'm guessing I'm getting a dialog asking for USB debugging to be enabled. I'm not too sure how I got to this window, but it randomly appears on restarts of the device, and half the time, it just restarts normally like any restart.
I was wondering if there was a way I can push a command line using cmd on my PC to accept or continue from the dialog box that I literally can't see.
I looked far and wide on Google and this beloved website, but am having a hard time finding a solution.
The device is bootload unlocked, running stock on Lollipop.
I do not know if rooting and installing TWP will affect my data, as it is the only thing I really don't want to lose. I wish to keep stock as I am completely fine with it and I have tried custom Roms, but I still wish to continue using stock.
I'm not too familiar with some words used in explanations on this site, so please respond as if I'm 7 years old :silly:
My initial goal was to (while having usb debug enabled) fastboot (i think i'm using the right term) Mobizen, then mirror the screen on my pc, and control the device to upload everything to my cloud storage.

How to Enable USB Debugging through ADB?

Right then. First things first, I apologize if I don't use the proper lingo associated with everything; I'm as super nooby as can be.
So, here's my problem: My rooted, Samsung Galaxy S3 has had it's screen shattered and its digitizer broken. The screen is completely black and the touchscreen does not respond. It didn't have a password (it was just swipe to open), which I suppose makes things easier, though. The phone itself still turns on, and I receive notifications and all that, but I am completely unable to do anything about. I understand that I am able to view and operate an Android phone through my computer, so I was hoping that'd work. Well, as the title of this topic hinted at, I didn't USB debugging enabled on my phone, which pretty much every program I found requires. So, I searched around, and learned that ADB can activate USB debugging through a usb cable and some tech magic. Unfortunately, I am not a tech magician and the articles I found were hieroglyphics. I spent some time reading, researching, reading researching, but it still doesn't make sense to me. I have ADB installed, but I don't know how to use it at all. I can launch "adb.exe" in administer mode but nothing occurs. I'm wondering if anyone would be able (or want to) explain to me, preferably step-by-step on how to enable USB debugging be it through ADB or some other, miraculous technique.
For anyone interested, these were the articles I looked at:

Hey dude, what you are talking that can enable USB Debugging from ADB is possible only on custom ROMs. But on stock ROM this is not possible.

Can't access broken screen OPO, adb not working

Recently my OPO's screen cracked for the second time in half a year, and because of the ridiculous screen prices I've decided to not get it fixed this time.
But, I do want to get all my data and grab some other stuff from the phone before I discard it. I came across a tool by k.janku1 that does exactly what I need right now. I installed adb, sdk, intel android drivers and the tool itself but realised that USB debugging probably is not enabled on my phone. This post proposes a workaround for that, but that doesn't seem to work. Running adb shell comes up with an error and adb devices gives me an empty list. Is there a solution to this?
