Hey guys, I've been away from Sensation development for a while so I'm not that current on what ROMs are available.
Basically, I've been using AOSP for a while and it's so much better at multitasking/fluidity that I don't really want to go back to Sense 3.6 or 4. However, I just don't think there's an app available that beats HTC's clock and weather functions - they really are amazing. I don't want or need access to Sense widgets, just the apps would be fine.
Is there any way to get Sense 3.6 or 4's clock and weather on a stock ICS Rom? I know it's not as simple as just chucking an apk on there because they come with additional services and libraries, so has any dev done something similar I might be able to have a look at?
Thanks for reading, I'd appreciate any advice or replies
Cheers!

No you can't, due to the framework of HTC apps it would not be possible on aosp.
However, what u can do is flash a sense rom and then flash one of the aosp aroma themes on top - that will allow you to pick if you want aosp or sense versions of certain apps and will give u the look and speed of aosp.
Heres a link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21948881

Hm, thanks for your reply, but I'm sure I've seen it done before - and not just a Sense ROM with an AOSP theme, but in my travels I've seen stock Gingerbread and ICS builds with HTC apps incorporated somewhere. I'm pretty sure, anyway

what u would have seen is the aosp theme - try it mate it looks and feels identical to aosp but with some htc apps. Its what ur looking for...
hi mate, i was using Virtuous Inquisition AOSP for past months, and had just went back to Sense ROMs.
Didn't do much. Was having a HBOOT 1.27, HTC firmware 3.32, while on Virtuous Inquisition. Just wiped all data, and flashed the OrDroid (Sense 4.0). Been using it for awhile, very stable so far.
ARHD is also a good choice for sense ROM, but thats a Sense3.6.

I started this thread with hopes of learning and educating the talented Rom cookers and bakers XDA has to offer. There are alot of varying points of view, both in completely different camps as to which UI has more to offer/ meets a user's needs or desires. Vanilla, custom, Sense. I am trying to figure out WHAT users want in there roms.
For example:
I keep using Sense based Roms because I love the camera & enjoy the fact that it employs face detection. I also enjoy the fact that the SMS application automatically applies my picture from Facebook or twitter as my avatar when sending messages, to me that makes it feel cleaner.
I dislike the fact that sense keeps a rolling list of my most recent applications above the notifications bar, I also dislike how taxing on the system sense is.
Alas, this thread isn't only about what I like and I want... its about what we all would like to see.
P.S.
If we have a team of skinners/themers and bakers out there willing to undertake an on-demand ROM like this... 1. We would forever love you 2. If you haven't done so already, I will set up a PayPal account for donations in your honor because I'll love you like that.
Personally I like HTC Sense but there's something about AOSP that I can't help but have a huge attraction to so I'd have to go with that. I agree though about the status bar showing your recent apps and I did notice that Sense slows down my phone more and kinda kills battery
What does AOSP have to offer? AOSP vs Sense.
I'm familiar with a lot of terms, but what is "vanilla" ?

From what I have gleaned, it's basically the most simple/basic/no frills form of the ROM. Then, the bakers out all nice goodies and stuff in it to make it what it is.

AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project and is like you said, stock android. It's what android is meant to look like but then companies add HTC Sense and Motorola Blur and other frames over it. If you check out the Ginger beast rom for the Inspire, which is what I run, then you'll see what it looks like and such

So is Gingerbeast a very trim version of an AOSP ROM? I played with MIUI a bit, but then went to CoreDroid and am pretty much loving it. Though I do have that itch to flash again...lol
Sense roms are made from what either HTC leaks us or stock firmwares modified or whatever that particular dev wants to do to that build(theme, deodex, zipalign, add whatever tweaks). You can remove some sense apks, but sense framework is still there and there is still some hints of it throughout that just can't really be removed.
Unmodified aosp roms are pretty much what you would see on a nexus s. Absolutley no bloat, no sense at all, fast and nothing to hog resources. But aosp wasn't specifically built for this phone and its a lot harder to get everything working right (thank the cm team for not only getting everything working, but it works insanely well).
Gingerbeast uses some cm core parts, but removes some cm specific stuff, adds in aosp parts from both source trees and is then compiled. Same for the kernel- cm aosp kernel, with some extra speed/efficiency tweaks)
Some sense roms are almost 300mb, gingerbeast is around 85 I believe.

So what you are saying is, without htc sense frame work we can't have things like the sense camera and weather app with your kernel and an adamholden rom?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I want what Android Revolution has to offer, sense with a no sense script. Best of both worlds, no sense but still have a good camera and all the htc apps, but no sense! Makes sense!
I have to say that I think I prefer some of the things in sense. I've been from leedroid to miui to gingerbeast. Miui. Was slow and taxing, while very pretty... not what I want... I prefer a phone that can fly through pages as fast as I can navigate them.
Gingerbeast is very, very quick which is awesome, but like said before the HTC camera and SMS, as well as clock Widgets and ringtones, are better with sense.
I think ill try out android revolution next

It would be cool of someone made a kernel with calibrated color, I think the captivate had some roms with that. I've noticed the black levels on the inspire seem more dark grey then true black. Wishful thinking maybe?

I love sense, It's better than the others (touchwiz etc)
I use GingerBeast, which I like because it is small and light and fast. I do miss the sense camera, though the miui camera is decent enough for my purposes.

Is there any way to get the sense 3.0 lockscreen on my phone. Including all the features or at least most of it. Was thinking that the only way might be to flash a rom onto my phone.
Dude, there's a thread for this not far below this one!
Pardon me being picky, saw that one but was looking for something more similar to the htc sensation one with the icons as well as the ring.

Fair play, then yeah, a ROM will be needed.
I use the virtious unity rom and it has most of the sense 3.0 present including the ring lockscreen complete with options to display photos, weather or clock etc. Also ring lockscreen present n the saga rom i used 5.1 i think and present in sergio 76 coredroid rom.I also think maryland cookie released the lockscreen seperately but Im not sure if it was for 2.1 or 3.0 roms.
I find the sense 2.1 + 3 ROMs a little laggy at the mo. I guess some more optimization will come with later releases.
Honestly, I can't wait for ice cream. If this phone doesn't get it, ill sell it. I want my UI hardware accelerated. It's all Android needs to make it really nice.
try AGILE LOCK,i have it on my desire s,on my desire,on my daughters hd2(pyramid rom)...............nearest you'll get to the sensation lock WITHOUT THE NEED OF A NEW ROM. all the rooting and flashing i've done over 3 years,my desire s is the ONLY PHONE that im keeping the origional stock rom lol, would be nice to have the pyramid rom though lol, would be tempted then lol
hope this helps

I would say Android Revolution HD 6.7.2 because it is the fastest and most stable stock base Rom I have ever used. Now if you want sense 4 I would recommend insert coin v2.2 For me its even faster then arhd I got over 4100 in quadrant but mind you that no oc and battery life isn't as great. Hope this helped. Picking a Rom is a personal thing .what's best for me might not be best for your needs.I highly highly recommend you try out SEVERAL different roms for yourself and then make your choice for your daily Rom! That's the fun part! I've probably tried almost all the ics roms available! See what suits you're needs and style! We are lucky to have such wonderful developers to give us many different choices! So instead of asking what's best in others opinions, see what's best in YOUR opinion! Each Rom has a area that tells you what's working and what isn't, they are very up front about that so read that area, decide what you want, try out SEVERAL different ones then make your OWN choice! For me I really like the lightning Rom. However it might not be for you! So have fun and experiment with different things and form your own opinion. Best wishes and I genuinely hope this helps you out. Happy flashing!

Yeh! Just try all the ROM's you can find and see which ones you like best? (You'll get addicted to it)
I'm using CM10 at the moment but my opinion WILL differ from almost everyone else's.
Yes, but not everyone has the time to try each and every ROM that comes along. So thanks for your suggestions guys!
Were only saying to give each Rom a shot and form your own opinion. Do it little by liitle if you don't have a lot of time but it is always best to try for yourself and form your own opnion...

the best ROM is the one that comes when you buy your phone, STOCK. But when you want something customized for your needs, you gotta try those available ROM. for me so far, i have Insert Coin for sense 4 in my phone always also the viper 1.1.0 but I'm still testing other ROM. What counts for when it comes to ROM is performance first then the looks. :good:
Enjoy Hunting :highfive:
I'd agree with trying the custom ROMs and work out what fits best. Like a try before you buy session.
REMEMBER, take Nandroid backups at every opportunity so you can revert to a previous ROM easily. That's probably the most important aspect.
Yep, take a few for a spin! I went from awesome Virtuous to awesome Lightning! Happy Flashing!
Communisation
Lighting
I agree there are just too many ROMS to try them all. But there are also way too many threads of this sort. For all those wondering which ROMS are good here are my recommendations-
ARHD or InsertCoin if you want closest to stock Sense 3.6 with preference to ARHD cos its updated more.
Elegancia Sense 3.6 if you want a tweaked version. I adore this ROM. Themed version available.
ViperS ROM if you want an extremely flexible Sense 4.0 experience. Elegancia 4.0 if you want a themed Sense 4.
OpenSensation for AOSP.
BerserkMode if you want Sense parts with AOSP speed and smoothness. It's probably better than Virtuous Inquisition now thanks to updates and improvements.
MIUI if that's your taste. There are about 3 or 4 threads. I'm personally waiting for the AOSP version update.
New Roms that may be worth a try- Lightning, TRAD Sensation (both Sense 4)
ROMS that you absolutely HAVE to cultivate to your own taste (for purists)- the hyper roms. props to Splder for carrying on Kristofs work.
Others- CM10 by Bruce if you're adventurous and don't mind temporarily sactificing your camera.
Personally I'd start with (Elegancia 3.6 Stock/themed is upto you) its amazing.. ViperS and BerserkMode of of course CM9. After that you have a pretty decent experience by which to judge other Roms. Happy Flashing! Hope this helped you and any others with the same question.

Paranoid Android! Hands down!
The ability to put your HTC into tablet mode is wonderful. As is the ability to custom choose the DPI for each individual app on your phone. After using Gmail in tablet mode I never want to go back to the preschool-like interface Gmail uses by default for phones. And with all the themes available for CyanogenMod you can REALLY customize the look and feel of every visual aspect of your phone's UI. I held out for a LONG time, I thought Sense was "pretty" and the way to go. But I've found ROMS based on AOSP/AOKP/CM run circles around Sense performance wise. Sense is a HOG for resources plan and simple. Install Apex launcher in Paranoid Android and it's quite close to perfect. Fast, themeable, visually pleasing, and the ability to take advantage of the fact your Sensation has an HD display.
That said, if you're still a sense holdout, the Viper ROM wipes the table with pretty much all other Sense based ROMS (though Daemon looks a bit promising).
For a STABLE ICS AOKP ROM, I like the EyeCandy ROM. (I boot into this restore when I need to use the camera as camera isn't functioning in JellyBean yet)
*edit*
Unlike a lot of other posters, I pretty much have tried EVERY ROM available for the Sensation. I have a tech addiction!
After a while the Sense 4.0 ROMS all start looking the same, except for the truly innovate ones that stand out from the pack like Viper, Daemon, Lightning, and RMS Blue Sense.
I tried ARHD, but once I found there were Sense 4.0 ROMS for my Sensation, I never looked back, never bothered trying another 3.6 ROM/ Sense 3.6 just seemed outdated to me at that point.
I prefer AOKP-based ROMS to CM as AOKP lets you tweak a heck of a lot more of the UI as well as system performance tweaks.
And I hate MIUI with a passion. Stay far far away from MIUI unless you really enjoy giving yourself a headache.

You can look in the change logs of the roms and they will tell you EXACTLY what is working and what's not.the developers are very open about that. Each Rom has a area what tells you EXACTLY what is working. So there are no surprises. Most roms have most everything working . They will tell you what's not working on page one. Around the change logs. Always look at that first then you will not have any surprises if something is not working. I really hope this helps you out. So if you find a Rom your interested in just read that area and it will clearly tell you what to expect. Best wishes.

Currently 1.9.5a .. I've used 1.92 as well as 1.4 in the past.
I know a lot of people will probably say arhd because it has been the most popular rom. However, my Sensation kept crashing/randomly turning off with it. The only rom that hasn't caused me too many problems is InsertCoin and OrDroid. I have been using OrDroid for several months now and couldn't be happier. I will probably stick to OrDroid for a while.
i am using ViperS 1.3 ROM for my sensation and i want to go "sense"less can you suggest good senseless ROMS for me? and if you can give me the links, that would be fanstastic.
ViperS ROM rocks. I just want to try sensless for and see the difference.

I'm currently running Bruce's CM10. It is quite stable, and super smooth.
The answer depends on what you want to do. If you want to keep Sense elements like the camera and some apps that came stock with the phone then you'll want to have a true de'sensed ROM like HyperNonsense or ARHD (with the desensing script run during install from 4EXT recovery, otherwise ARHD will still look like Sense)
Both will get you the pure Android look and feel. ARHD will do it with a lot of tweaks that make it run better. HyperNonsense will do it and give you just enough to boot the device to allow you to customize it with the apps you want.
However, both are still 'sense' at their core. They just don't look it.
On the other hand if you want to completely leave Sense and have a lot more flexibility you can go the Cyanogen route. Both CM9 and CM10 are pure Android with no Sense elements. They are much more customizable with both system tweaks and graphical tweaks (like UI theming). But some Sense based apps won't work on them.
If you want to go that route there are difference between 9 and 10. 9 is ICS and is more complete with working Wifi Calling available. 10 is Jelly Bean and a lot smoother and faster, but still has some bugs being worked out and wifi calling does not work with it (yet)

So I rooted my TMobile branded HTC Sensation a couple months ago and can't believe I went that long without attempting to root it.
The first ROM I flashed was Android Revolution and I loved it! I love the Beats Audio and the ability to hide apps along with all the little things you over look. I also love how sleek the UI appears.
However, voice searching in Google Maps and in general doesn't work and I would like to install Google Now on my HTC Sensation. Can anyone recommend a good ROM I can try out? I have a trouble finding any ROMs worth looking into besides the "popular" ones.
If you want to customize it, install ViperS. It does slow down after a while, but a slight overclock of the CPU might help. So many options and add ons

basically you cant ask for roms AT LEAST HERE ON XDA

Well, I can tell you that Bruce's CM10 is rock solid and because it's JB (4.1.x) it has Google Now. The one I'm using right now is Albino's CM10.1 (4.2.x), which also includes Google Now by default. It's also really stable. If you decide to go with CM, I'd suggest you install a custom launcher like Apex so you can hide the apps.
To Sense or not to Sense? That is the question that first must be asked to one's self, in order to begin their journey of ROM finding.
If Sense, which version of Sense? 3.6 or 4.x? Sense 3.6 offers speed, reliability and stability. Whilst, Sense 4 delivers the beauty of a newer GUI, greater features but with the sacrifice of smoothness and battery life, generally.
Roms for 3.6:
Elegancia
ARHD
Energy
Ordroid
CoinDroid (The evolution of InsertCoin, this was amazing back in the day)
Roms for 4.x:
ViperS
DarkSense
CommuniSation
If one wishes not to Sense, the choice must be made of which Android version to use. 2.3 all the way up to 4.2.2. Once the choice is made, the decision for AOSP, AOKP, CyanogenMod and MIUI is also to be made. AOSP provides the sleek, native and stock Android ROM that Google's Nexus devices all use. No tweaks, just the purity and speed. AOKP and CM are mod heavy, if one chooses to do so. Which aid in doing things to your phone which were otherwise, unforeseen in the world of mobile technology. For example, changing status bar elements, editing hardware key functions and notification area elements. MIUI, can't speak on this too much, but I feel it gives your phone an iOS feel, different to any other android skin/ROM and very orange. Didn't really like it, but that's me.
For AOSP:
Can't think of one off the the top of my head.. A quick search will do ya.
For AOKP:
Frankinstine's!
For CM10:
Bruce's!
NameLess Bean
Albinoman's
For MIUI:
ASR-Droid and many others.

Viper just released the first JB Sense ROM for Sensation, however camera doesn't work at all, so if you want Sense with working camera, you're still stuck on ICS. As for JB on CM/AOSP, just try a few camera apps from Play Store and see which one suit you best.
