Thanks for bringing that up. Actually, that could be a good thing to port to the EVO.
Anyone?
You mean you want the AOSP contacts?

The dialer I think would be under the name Phone.apk but I might be wrong. I pushed it on my EVO and the unit would not recieve serivce. I think We'll need the one from a MotoDroid or Desire. I believe this is a CDMA vs GSM issue that is built into the Phone app.
I've pushed the Nexus one Contacts.apk in and it too was unsucessful. I think it will take more then just the APK's while /system is locked. If they get that unlocked then you'll be able to just run the apk but for now all the files in data/data and /data/app need to come with it as well as any other hooks these apps have.
I've lost the stock contacts (People, why they re-name crap???) while trying to do this. When I get it figued out I'll let you know.
If anyone has the Desire or Moto Phone.apk I'll be happy to give it a try.
Might need any thing from /data/data/ and /data/app/ that is assoctiated with Phone or Dialer.
I would love to get rid of the sense dialer
Yeah.. I put money on the table to get rid of the sense dialer/ contacts.... so.. that'd be awesome if someone jumped on that.
The only way I achieved nexus one contacts is through the froyo port by avalaunch.
The sense phone and dialer app was a dealbreaker for me. The froyo phone app is simple and quick.
There are already roms that have this.

I tried one of the sense removed roms and it still had the sense dialer. Do you know which versions have the stock dialer?
Can we just open up a rom zip file and pull apk's out of it, or is it not that simple?

I think there is another I've or two that have the asop dialer. On the last one listed the contacts part works from the dialer not the asp icon which isn't a big deal just make sure you select the right one before checking use as default.

Thanks for the links... I have actually used both of those, the top one is 2.2, and very nice, but not quite ready for day-to-day use unless you are willing to deal with no cameras and some flaky app stuff. I think I actually backed up the dialer in particular from it with Titanium, but it wouldn't install since it is 2.2 only.
The second one (NonSense): I tried the stripped one, and it used aosp stuff for many parts, but lots was still sense ui, including the dialer. It is possible that the full version includes it though.
I have non tried the Senseless rom yet, so it may be the one you are referring to.
Edit: I just looked at the nonsense thread a bit, and sure enough he mentions that it has the stock dialer. Sleep deprevation must be getting to me. Maybe the contacts app was still sense, but the dialer wasn't... or something.
Here are two of the onscreen keyboards that I use on a daily basis, swype is also a great alternative but posts with swype links have been shut down by the mods so the best thing to do is to sign up for the beta program directly here or use google
Of course to install these for now you can go to the thread created by me on xda here to sideload the .apks
These are both being used currently on my 2.2.1 Rom with zero issues.
Thanks to all that have made these programs possible, we truly appreciate the hard work.

Swype is nice but inputting email addresses and passwords are somewhat of a hassle.
I prefer HTC_IME as the tap to text option of the two because of the word prediction software that is always on point.
Its hard to compare swype vs. the one above because they are completely different ways of using your onscreen keyboard.
The HTC ime mod is the best. I don't like the clunky stock keyboard the inspire had. Plus the layout was shifted from other virtual keyboards. The mod keyboard give you the ability to customize so much. Including the layout.

Well I have Swype fully working on the Inspire, installed using the Sideload Wonder Machine for Windows (Best thing since sliced bread).
Highly recommended

The Gingerbread KB worked fine on my HTC Dream / G1.
Thats weird, I didnt get around installing it on the Inspire yet so maybe Ill have to edit the OP and take that link to the app off if more continue to report the FC.
For those having issues just unistall it and use the other options listed please.

I just noticed that it FC's when you have different languages enabled in the settings. If you don't tinker with the settings at all (default) it will work, but I mainly write in English and Spanish and is the main reason why I installed it to begin with...
never mind it FC's as default as soon as you try to type the first letter...
trying the one on the market in a minute...
Tried the one on the market and it even has more features than the one in the forums, I highly recommend it...

We cant post up swype .apks, its prohibited.
i understand that, and thats totally fine...but how the heck do i install it? i got swypeinstaller.apk to install fine. but after that it attempts to download and install the swype.apk from the server and it tries to install it, and thats where it gets blocked. so im trying to figure out how to install the swype.apk that was downloaded through the swype installer, when i cant find any temp file or anything that just says swype.apk

Download this.
How did you install swype, in bullet point. Mine went like this
-registered on swype's website
-downloaded swypeinstaller.apk
-used sideloading wonder machine to install swypeinstaller.apk
-opened swype installer app
-logged into swype's server
-downloaded the 2.5MB swype (english/spanish)
-got the install blocked error, gave option to go to settings or cancel (obviously settings does nothing because we cannot check "unknown sources")
I'm not new to this stuff, and i've had HTC phones before, so i really doubt i did anything wrong, and i cannot accept the fact that the phone i purchased on launch day is blocked more than anyone elses phone that also got it on launch day. Im not being a jerk, but the only people that can help are the awesome devs on XDA, so help lol prease
So I know this version is probably still themed with that terrible gray, but can anyone comment on the improvements? I'm curious if it's worth installing over the Samsung themed version. It looks to have some nice new features/updates, but I'm assuming it'll get rolled into the next ota update if Samsung loves us, which remains to be seen. I used to have a play toy to try this stuff out on but unfortunately I sold them both :'(
I used to use Swype.
However, after using SwiftKey X (which is available here in Beta right now), I have lost all interest in Swype. SwiftKey is so [email protected] near telepathic at times, it's scary!
SwiftKey learns *your* typing style, and suggests words based on your style and grammar. Until Blind Type comes out, I don't think a better keyboard is available - anywhere.
Highly recommended! Almost all of my friends that have used it have stuck with it after the trial period.
Give it a shot!
Cheers,
I use SwiftKey. After letting it have access to your email, and facebook and twitter it does an unbelievable job of word suggestion. Then it only gets better the more that you use it. After about a few months with this app, my word suggestions are very accurate.

3.0
I started with Shapewriter, then Swiftkey, and now Swype 3.0.
My biggest gripes with Swype have been fixed for 3.0.
Predictive text words are now a horizontal bar above the keyboard instead of that annoying pop-up window. Also, it now predicts for tapping as well as swyping.
For me, this makes it a true hybrid keyboard as there are time where I just feel like doing one but not the other.
The prediction is not as slick SwiftKey's but I don't think I'm going back as this is by far Swype's best keyboard.
I believe you have to have root to install 3.0 on the Charge.
My 2 cents.
New Swype 3.0 Beta
Alright I decided to give the new Swype a try after reading several positive reviews. I must say that in comparison to the one that shipped with our phones, the 3.0 beta is significantly better. I tried Swiftkey X and I found the keyboard itself to be too small, with too much space between the keys. Swype 2 was a little annoying so I mostly used the Samsung keyboard but 3.0 is nice! The buttons are bigger, even than Swype 2.0 and the color scheme is better though still in need of a reskin. It seems very responsive and the prediction is better too. Also it allows for easier transitioning between typing and swyping. It scales perfectly with an lcd density of 200, which was another gripe I had with Swiftkey X.
You have to remove the stock swype 2.28 before you can install the new 3.0 beta. I found directions for removing (or renaming to keep a backup which is what I did) for the fascinate which work perfect for the Charge as this is what I did:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1128986
After renaming all of the files listed to .bak or deleting them, reboot or it won't install correctly. Then download the new installer from your phone's browser here: http://beta.swype.com/
Follow the installer instructions and you're done. I'll probably continue using it as the buttons are large and it's easier to transition from typing/swyping.
It's sad the the theme still looks that hideous. I think just for that reason I'll hold out for our next ota update and pray that it's in there. Doubt it, but I can hope. I'm not opposed to installing over my copy, but it's just so ugly!

Charge is a great phone, but IMO the orange theme on stock is already at the pinnacle of ugly excellence, so swype could not make it any worse
I replaced the stock swype with the beta v3 and I do like the beta better. Word suggestions appearing horizontal above the keyboard instead of over the stuff you're typing is a big improvement.
It's true, the orange is not my favorite haha. But truthfully if we get 2.3 I won't care what color it is, I've been waiting for that since I got my Vibrant a year ago. Samsung is so slow with updates it's unreal. And I would hope if we get that update Swype 3.0 would come with it!
Anyone else still waiting for swype to send them the e-mail? I've tried two different e-mail accounts...still waiting 20 minutes later. I know..I'm an impatient s.o.b.
It's never taken them long to send me an e-mail, but I just archived the one they sent with the installer so I could put it on any phone.
I have been waiting a day now for the email and I deleted the other swype. This is going great so far.

I am in the same boat. This is ridiculous...
The automated email system from their website seems to have been down the part few days. I hadn't received mine either then I went to the beta swype website and had them resend the Verification email and I received it instantly. Just try to login then right under the password field you will see a resend confirmation email link.

So I have been trying to upgrade to the new 3.0 version, however I can't seem to get the previous version to uninstall. I was able to uninstall Swype Installer, but am unable to do so for Swype. The uninstall function is greyed out, so is not an option. I re-installed the Installer, however I cannot get past the Generate License stage of the install process, so I am unable to utilize that to uninstall Swype as well. Is there a way to manually do this. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide!

J7NY, I think you have to have root explorer, because when I use the file manager that came on the phone ( or with gummycharge...?) it still wont let me delete or rename the file. so I am stuck right now as well.

I am not rooted, thanks for the information. That is terrible news!! Seems pretty stupid to me. I have the 3.0 version on my Xoom and it is so much better!
Swype, in their post for the beta, says it is not compatible with systems that come with Swype preinstalled for just this reason. You have to mount your /system directory Read/Write instead of Read/Only to be able to mess with any of the files there (easily done with Root Explorer), which requires root access. If you do that, you can rename or delete all of the Swype files that were installed in the system.
When they release it, hopefully they will have a good method for systems that come preinstalled with Swype.
Hi everyone. First of all, many thanks to Gary for Root. It was quick and painless.
Now that we have root, I was wondering if anyone knows what needs to be deleted in order to get rid of that pesky pop up menu you get by pressing on the Chevron/Arrow in the middle of the bar.
I have the Wizz Bar (what an unfortunate name) installed and it does the job so much better. If you're wondering what Wizz Bar is, it basically allows you to pick your own applications or commands and bind them to the little Chevron or Arrow in the middle of the Honeycomb Bar (also called the "Mini Apps Tray")
However the built in action that pops up the Task Manager/World Clock/Calculator etc also initiates. Is there some way to remove the TouchWiz Apps Tray?
Or does this require more tinkering than a simple apk deletion from system/apps

It's much more involved. That aspect of touchwiz is buried somewhere in the frameworks. The last time I checked (a month ago), several people on both the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 forums were looking for the same thing, but I haven't seen any good solutions.
If you find something over in one of those forums, try to get information on HOW they did it, and I'll try to reproduce it with ours.
I know with HTC phones modding such things requires the knowledge of decompiling, compling and signing apk's using apkTool or apkManager and editing smalis in notepad ++. You would have to track down which particular file contains the code and then know how to edit it to hide the taskbar. As an example just the simple task of hiding the clock in the notification bar of my HTC Incredible phone required the addition of 2 lines of code in the clock.smali file inside SystemUI.apk and the only way to get it to work was to push the file back to the phone and set permissions with adb. You couldn't just copy and paste it back in.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I actually did go look at a bunch of 10.1 and 8.9 ROMs and it looks like there may be a solution out there. I've contacted one of the ROM developers for an answer.
If someone tells you what file to edit and what lines of code to use please post it as it will be useful to the community.
You may install honeybar form market to hide/unhide the bottom bar(notification and clock as well)

i just tried honeybar and it doesn't work for me. I also have go launcher ex installed so not sure if it's conflicting. I see the white box for honeybar, but pressing on it multiple times does nothing (it even goes away eventually as described in the install notes).
Honeybar isn't the solution that most of us are looking for. I myself love the Honeycomb default bar. It's the Mini-Apps Tray that is entirely useless. The least that Samsung could have done was to make the shortcuts changeable by the user.
The whole point of quick access to shortcuts is to have a quick access to the applications you use the most without flipping through homescreens or going to the Apps Tray. Thanks Samsung, I really need the World Time and Calculator more than I need the Browser and Settings Panel.

I've wondered whether there was a way to intercept the trigger that touching the chevron activates and just redirecting it to another command (such as what happens when you hit the "home" button after you've installed a home replacement). That way we wouldn't have to worry about hacking the touchwiz dock for customizing, we just replace it altogether so something else is invoked by touching the shortcut.

Re-mapping the function would be more involved than just turning it off but it is possible if you know what you're doing. For HTC phones there's a mod called rosie remap which does just about the same thing but its a complicated hack. It remaps a + button on the phone that ads apps to the homescreen, the mod allows you to reassign the button so it opens any app you want. I believe this is a framework-res.apk mod. Eventually someone who is familar with touchwiz will do these mods, if they haven't already for the 8.9 or 10.1, which should all be pretty much the same.
Edit: I think the chevron function would be in the touchwiz apk located in system/app but I don't know what Samsung calls it. HTC calls their Sense UI Rosie and you mod Rosie.apk to do the remapping of their UI specific buttons. If the chevron is part of honeycomb itself then it would be in the framework-res.apk file I bbelieve.
This is good info flowing in. I'm gonna see if I can figure out some more.

Was there an update that I don't know about that allows this??? I really like the idea of the mini app tray, but like was said before, not having the ability to put your most used apps there makes it pretty useless.
Please explain how apps can now (or in the near future) be changed in the tray.
Thanks!!!
I guess until they release 7.7 we won't know. Unless there's an update out on KIES. But I really doubt it.
Confirmed:7.7 has fully customisable mini apps tray...i'm disappointed in Samsung for releasing 'premium' products in such close succession that are so different in functionality. Why did they not include this basic and important feature on all new of their new tablet products? I actually feel somewhat conned now

Pare, actually like it better because i don't like stock honeycomb desktop and app drawer. I set swipe up gesture to hide/unide the dock and also changed the stock dock icons.
Once we're able to customize the Touchwiz shortcuts, or hijack the launch command so we can tell it to launch something else, I'll be much happier.
For those who've not seen this function in action yet, check it out in this video at 2.05: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=tBpzweqvKJA
Surely Samsung can put this function in tab plus on an update ... and they need to. The app tray is almost functionless otherwise. The presence of this thread is sufficient evidence that there is a high demand and several unsatisfied customers. Many customers have spent over £400 on this tablet. Why did they put it onto the 7.7 which was going on sale only a few days/weeks after the tab plus?

Just for my two cents, I would also like to see the app tray made editable. I've only had my unit for a couple of days, and I already feel its wasted on me for what it holds. Hoping for that to change in a coming update.

Where is this "mini apps?" Did I miss something?
Just upgraded to tweeked 3 and have some problems:
1. I can't find the voicemail app & don't know how to call VM. where do I get the app?
2. Buddies now is missing. Won't restore via titanium backup.
3. I migrated from eclipse rom. How do I get the eclipse rom keyboard and colors?
4. Howdo Irestore the default power on and power off animations?
5. Verizon Data APP / My veerizon forces close on startup.
I think that is it for now. Will post when I have some time to play with it.

1. You don't need the app for voicemail. Just dial *86 or hold down 1 in the dialer.
2. Buddies now is considered bloat and you can only use it on the stock launcher anyway. If you want it it is in tweaktools.
3. I believe eclipse keyboard was either a themed ICS or themed Swype (I don't remember which - it was too long ago). Either way both are available if you search. As for the colors - since Nitro stopped working on the charge we don't have that, but there are a lot of themes on tweaktools.
4. Tweaktools
5. It works fine for me. Could be a bad flash, could be something else.
And I guess we have another nocturnal person here.
The vvm stuff was also deemed bloat, but all of that stuff can be restored using tweaktools OR the system apps and system app flasher in the tweaked op. Jihad has you covered on the rest (thanks Jihad).
I got the verizon app to work after deleting and reinstalling. The rest I can live with till I have a chance to research Tweaktools. Most of the stuff is minor and just me being picky as I'm not yet used to the tweeked ROM.
Tweakedtools: doesn't seem to be working. I can get into the menu and install a theme and buddies now, but they don't act as though they ever got installed. even rebooted. What the heck?

Tweakedtools: doesn't seem to be working. I can get into the menu and install a theme and buddies now, but they don't act as though they ever got installed. even rebooted. What the heck?

You have to type su to give the terminal root permissions.

Doh!
Ok. now it has the permission and does install things like buddies now, but when I try to install a theme or boot animation I get the android robot with the exclamation point and it does not install. what can I possibly be doing wrong? do i need to install something like CWM?

You don't have CWM installed? I doubt it works with stock recovery. When you installed Tweaked did you use the Odin version without CWM? You should get and install CWM.
The only 2 boot animations that work are Stock Galaxy S boot and Stock DROID boot. They use the Samsung format that works with the stock kernel. Themes should work though.
Ok. Now I understand. I did use oden version without cwm. Now I need to oden cwm and I'll be good to go.
EDIT:
Thanks for the info, everything works.
Now I need to find a suitable keyboard---possibly one that mirrors the one in the eclipse rom.
On another note, I'm not all that happy with any of the included themes. How to I create the theme I want?
If you know Java and smali, you can rip apart the framework and make your own theme.

The eclipse keyboard is a themed version of this I think.

I have no idea on how to work with Java or what smali is.
I do have the old eclipse ROM. can't i take the theme files from there and somehow load them to the phone?
Regarding the keyoard, I couldn't get that swipe one to install as the app keeps asking me to login and I don't know how to generate a username and password. I'm now thinking that it was a Samsung keyboard, but I could be wrong.
Smali is basically the decompiled Android version of Java. In Android, everything gets packed up in .dex files for the Dalvik VM (Android's optimized version of the Java VM), and when you decompile them, you get Smali. It's like Java, but "distorted", for lack of a better word. If you know how to read Java, you can feel your way around, but it's different enough that even if you're good with Java, you'll have to relearn some things for Smali.
well...I did some searching on line and I think the stock theme that comes preloaded at the factory is what I want to get back to. Also the default Samsung keyboard is the one I want.
I'm leaning towards tossing tweaked out the window rather than getting frustrated. If I do that what do I loose and how would I add root to stock?
also, I can't manage to get the phone to vibrate when i tap the screen. Haptic feedback. How do I turn it on?

No. What you think of as "files" are a series of edits in the framework. Obviously the framework for Tweaked is for Tweaked, and Eclipse is for Eclipse. If you're going to try to interchange these things you may as well just reinstall Eclipse.
For Swype, I'm not sure what you're talking about. There's a big honking button that says "register" on the website.

Not sure what you're looking at. The theme in Eclipse is NOTHING like the dickbutt gold (or pumpkin and poo) in stock. And the stock Samsung keyboard is God awful. Why not try something like SwiftKey 3? Swype is pretty good too, and it's free.
To root after restocking, all you would need to do is flash the SuperUser or SuperSU (whichever is your preference) zip in CWM. When you move from Tweaked (the only current custom ROM on the charge, by the way) you lose essentially everything. Dwitherell has put in numerous tweaks to improve the UI speed, and he has put in TSM parts... Plus you'll be back to the bloated whale this phone is at stock.
I believe most of the haptic feedback was removed in Tweaked because most view it as an annoying useless feature. I could be completely wrong but I don't really feel anything even though my haptic feedback is on.

I did nothing that would add or eliminate haptic feedback (outside of the entry in tsmparts, but I did nothing to hook that in if it needed hooking). Also, the stock samsung keyboard is called AxT9IME.apk. Sorry Tweaked is not to your liking. Have you tried the tw4 theme? That seems closer to the stock look at least. I didn't think anyone used it, but I can do a little work and get a stock theme variant together if you want. Also, rumor is some theme options will be added/returning soon...
And for what its worth flashing something different is a far better alternative then anything to do with a window.
Thanks for all the useful info. I must start by saying that i do like tweaked. It is much faster than what i had with eclipse. That said im not sure how much is due.to the rom and what is due.to the upgrade ota. I believe its mostly the rom. Way to go!
As for colors im not opposed to whats available im just used to what i had. The big complaint is that the calendar widgit does not have black text on a white background. Its not as legible but not horible. I can live with it. Im surprised there is no way to change colors like there is in windows control panel. Or an app for that. Oh well.
Thanks for.the keyboard.info. I'll take a look for it at lunch. As for missing the register button...it was to early to be doing anything tech.
Im sure that over time ill get more used to tweaked and be glad ro be uding it.
One last request...stock shutdown animation
Thats enough for now.

To be fair most of the speed change is due to the OTA - most of the edits made were the same as they were in the FP1 version, so I can't really take credit for that sort of thing. I don't have nor do I pretend to have the sort of skill necessary to do such things
As far as the stock shutdown animation, if there's some interest I could try to get that together. It required a number of framework.jar edits to switch the shutdown animation focus from reading a .qmg file to displaying a sequence of .pngs, so I would have to undo that sort of thing to make the shutdown.qmg work again. It wouldn't be too hard, so if there's some interest in that I can put something together and throw it on tweaktools.
I have interest but am not sure who else does and if its worth the time.
I googled the keyboard apk and downloaded it but it will not install. Is there a certain version that i need?

FWIW, I really lock the Tweaked Shutdown animation. Just need to find a sound byte to go with that (for those occasions when my phone shuts down without me knowing) - thinking of getting something from Southpark's tweak.
as for keyboards, have you tried ICS Keyboard? best in my experience.
Ice is not my thing. I just like the Samsung keyboard best. Just can't find a copy that installs.
Also what about stock screenshot setting?
