[APP]Weather locations manager for Sense (add custom cities) - HTC Sensation

Hi all,
As a practice project for Android developing I created an app that enables you to add custom locations to the sense weather application. I think some of you noticed that the weather app supports adding only a few cities, mostly the larger cities of a particular state/province. This is because the htc app makes use of a static database that has only around 3600 locations world-wide. This app can add almost any city to that database.
This could be done already, but the method was quite time-consuming and error-prone.
With this app, you just have to search for your city, optionally edit the pre-filled fields for name, state and country and you can add it to the htc weather database. The correct weather code is obtained from the web, for both US and non-US cities. The correct timezone is selected from the database, sometimes you have a choice there as well. Also, the weather application of htc is restarted after adding, so the change is immediately visible.
The app needs root access and an internet connection to work, and you should have htc sense with the weather app installed. I tested it only on Sensation (with sense 3.6) but it should work for sense 2.x up on any htc device.
Enjoy!
-Gödel
Update (19-4-13): New version. It should work on most ROMs now, it doesn't rely on the command line that much.
Update (31-7-12): New version. It checks the hostfile now, and removes the accuweather host from it if necessary. Works great with AdFree and AdAway. Also, to better work with the clock application in sense 4, the geographic position of a city is added to the database. It will search for the coordinates automatically, but you can also manually add them. Enjoy!
Update (16-7-12): Problem occurs on devices having an addblocker that changes the host file (/etc/hosts) installed, like AdAway or AdFree. They add the line "127.0.0.1 netweather.accuweather.com" to /etc/hosts, removing that line or changing back to stock host file solves the issue. See this post for more details.
Update: There seems to be a problem with the server the app connects to, it is not accessible from some (many?) countries or phones. I haven't found a solution yet.
Please try this link with your internet connection (so wifi or mobile), if you get a xml file back, this app should work. If it doesn't, but you can access the site above, please let me know.
Please let me know if it works as well, as well as your country, so I can try to figure out what's going on.
Update (7-7-12): You now have the possibility to manually add a city through its location code.

Dont work
Installed on my Sensation running PkMn 4.5 ROM.
SuperSU never registrate the app, so i set SuperSU promt to "Grant".
Searched for my city here in Denmark "Klarup" but it didn't find anything. I then searched for "Copenhagen" but it didn't finde that either.
Turned WiFi on but the app dont finde any city at all :-(

I install the app but it cant find any city.
I have root access and I also make a restart. Is something more that I have to do?

I can find and add Klarup, Denmark with the app. You got to have a working internet connection to search for cities.
To both jkolner and l_themis, does it say "no location found" or does it say nothing at all?

Same for me, "No location found" with open wifi

It seems like it just does not make the connection it should.
When I have time, I'll add more connection error handling to distinguish between not finding a city and a connection problem.
That doesn't solve the problem though, its weird. Can you verify that under app-info in your system settings, this app has full internet access?

It has full internet access and Wifi is connected.

Please try the new version, included in the OP. I simplified the search part a bit using a different http request, maybe it works in this way.
I will try to make some more improvements sometime soon, this was what I could do right now.

Didn't work with the new one either.

It seems like an encoding issue, I forgot to encode the location properly in the new version and got the errors myself. I updated the application once again.
However, this will probably fix nothing for you guys, I will look at it in more detail sometime soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

No problem my friend, take your time. For me is something very useful so it will be perfect if it finally works!

This looks good. Is there anyway to get the sense weather lock screen to change from current to a different city?

Tried new version can not find any cities.even London, bristol, paris

Okay, this is getting embarrassing.
I updated the apk again, please try it and report the error you get.
If it works, please let me know as well .

Still not working mate. Now it shows me connection error and ask me do you have internet connection? I don't think it will work.

It has worked perfectly here though, up to now (even tried it on a desire HD yesterday). Is this site accessable from your place?

I also get network error (israel)
I cant access the site you gave above

Well, so much for a solution then. Apparently the site above is not accessable for some countries. The search for cities uses it.
So at least it works in the Netherlands, and I think it will work in the US as well.
I still find it rather strange, it must be some legal issue.
In any case, I could not foresee this problem.
A solution would be to setup a forward portal, but that's a little much. I'll try to look for some trick to access that site.

[Q] BBC iPlayer

It has just been released to the market....but only plays back over Wifi.
Just wondering whether it would be possible to spoof the app into believing that the route was Wifi when it was actually 3G?
Cheers
If I could see it on the market it would be a start.

We need someone to post the original apk.
Or we also need someone to fool it into not caring what country it's in. Haha
A friend with a stock UK HTC Desire HD just installed it and sent me the link .. it doesn't show up for me.
If anyone can post the apk would be great full
Here you go...

I've tried it out, it works but the sound is out of sync for me.
Also is there any chance that the Iplayer app could be spoofed into thinking it was in the UK even though you are in the US

This.
Might we be able to remove it's check for location?
Or is it using the same check the website uses, and since we can't edit the website, we can't do this?
Thank GOD the BBC have finally done it!! Downloading now
Woah is it that bad? 2 and a half star rating!
APK if needed: http://db.tt/CgCD9fu
The WiFi check is done locally in the application - which is really just a fancy interface around a flash player.
If you know how to edit an APK, you need to edit bbc/iplayer/android/util/ConnectivityStatus.smali, changing line 126 from return v2 to return v4
v4 contains the wifi connection type value so the app will always think you're connected via wifi.
Hey Zibby,
Any chance you can post the mod'd apk?

Will post it later today when i have some time - it appears the UK check is done "locally" too. I *think* it sends a request to the BBC and that returns if the IP is in the UK or not. Question is, do the BBC protect the streams or not? (Can anyone outside the UK access the streams?)
EDIT: It seems my modified iplayer app continues to download what you were watching if you just press the back button to "exit" out of the app and churns through the data - can someone check a non-modified version to see if it does it too?

Just had a look using droidstats, and it does appear that the app does the same over wifi. My wifi data usage pretty much stopped when I killed Iplayer.
Just wondered if any progress has been made with this?

I'm guessing iPlayer doesn't protect streams as my cousin, using a VPN, is able to stream iPlayer to the UAE. Hope this helps.

[TWEAK][GPS]Get your GPS configured properly

I've seen that some of you have problems with configuring your GPS so I think it's about time to give a hand.
The problem is that custom ROM's, especially non-sense one's have the wrong NTP Server set.
Here are some steps in order to get your gps accurately:
1. Go to http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/ and search for active servers in your area
2. Get a file manager that allows you to change system files
3. Go to /system/etc/gps.conf
4. Edit gps.conf and change NTP server to the one you've find in first step.
5. Save the changes, then reboot
6. Get from Market GPS Status & Toolbox
7. Open the app, click on Tools->Manage A-GPS-> Reset
8. Then click again on Tools->Manage A-GPS->Download
9. Enjoy your faster gps now.
For those that the fixes above do not work, head over to the HD2 area http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630 and get your flashable zip from there. They are splitted into regions are areas.
Thanx a lot!
Works fine!

In the MIUI rom you can go to Settings, My Location, GPS Configuration and change the NTP server there...
Yep, but this apply only to MIUI ROM unfortunately. That's why I posted a universal method.
Thanks Bioan for the tip btw there is an app in the market called fasterfix which allows changing the ntp server from the available pool, you just have to choose the one that suits you best
Great, it's all about sharing, that's what makes this the community.
I've added a link to this thread into the main INDEX thread (hope that you don't object?), it's at the bottom under USEFUL LINKS.
You've got one apk on the market, for make this:
With fasterfix.apk, if you're root you can do that automatically.
You choose your area and confim.
You could change your area's choice when you travel on another country or area.

I just noticed this today.
It defaults at North America. So i changed it to my.pool.ntp.org.
Am I the only one with a lots of problem with my GPS ?
The first fix takes like one minute. After that, I don't use my phone for a couple of hours, and then launch GPS Test again. Like 99% of the time I cannot have any fix. It seems that the GPS does not work properly : GPS Test shows me like 4/5 satellites, then suddenly none, then lile 1, then 2, then 4... Then none again, like if the GPS just restart or something. I need to switch my GPS off, then put it on, then reset AGPS stats etcetc, and sometimes it works again.
I've tried to set the NTP server to a French one, but it does not seems to change anything. Also, I've tried 3 differents radios.
Any help ?

WhatsApp Sniffer issue

Hi guys,
I downloaded WhatsApp Sniffer in my HTC Desire, it seems to be working but can't capture any conversation. In short, when I start the app, I can only see the following message:
"There isnn't any conversations yet, wait until one has been captured. Make sure WhatsAppSniffer is listening and if you are on a WPA/WPA2 network, check that the ARP_Spoof is activated."
I've tried the app in both WEP and WPA/WPA2 networks but no luck. My phone is rooted with:
Android version: 2.3.7
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7-11162011-NIGHTLY-Desire
WhatsApp Messenger: 2.7.8509
Any clues what might be the reason?
Thx,
Sotiris.
I thought Whats App was now fixed so that it did not send plain text.
Hmm, I am not aware of it. But it makes sense... Thx for your reply.
if your network is secured with Wpa or wpa2
the chat will not be captured
to capture chat the network must be protected with wep
or it need to be unsecured

my issue is that @ times it says that ( my devise seem not to be rooted ), I have rooted phone i do have the superuser icon... samsung GS3
and i restart the app, and it runs ok, but it don't capture anything... am i doing something wrong??? i do see that it will not
capture anything in wap or wap2...
any help will be appreciated
bumping because it seems that this app doesnt work (anymore)
anyone confirming?
Hi.
I'm also wondering the same thing. Just went through the fairly painful process of downgrading my HTC Desire Z Gingerbread to Froyo in order to then gain root, specifically so that I could use WhatsAppSniffer.
The app seems to have installed correctly, it's running fine, the other apps like SuperUser and BusyBox have no problems. I've run the sniffer for several hours on my shared WPA network at home, and for a couple of hours on a shared Open network last night with no results. It could very easily be the case that there were no conversations to capture, but the other possibility is that WhatsApp have fixed the vulnerability. I'm going to keep trying for a couple more days, and on one more network connection. Will confirm if whether or not I get anything here.
Just reading a couple of open-source articles it seems that WhatsApp pushed release 2.8.3 to iPhones on 27th August 2012, and a similar release to Androids around the same time. This release included (relatively poor) encryption. Anyone who has downloaded the update will now be protected from WhatsAppSniffer. Seems that sniffing is still possible if you can fathom this: ezioamodio.it/?p=29. It's beyond me though. #noob
I tried yesterday found on web the versione 1.03 donate root,
also for myself it seems doens't work,
the spoof says that if I'm scanning a WPA/WPA2 network I have to activated the ARP Spoof, otherwise for WEP it doens't need.
But I supposed it worked in one of the two cases, instead the app continue to search but see nothing.
I tried to send a whatsapp message connecting to the same network that sniffer is connecting too, and it see even not my message.
Is it an older version that doesn't work or maybe it needs a rooted phone and mine one is not?
THANKS

[Request] Canadian requesting the Garmin Pilot apk

Hello all,
I apologize if I'm in the wrong section.
I'm trying to get a hold of the Garmin Pilot app, but it's not available in Canada and thus it won't let me download it. I'm not actually sure if it would work in Canada, since they might not have the data for Canadian airports built in, but I still think it's worth a try, since there are no other good pilot apps on Android.
The app is a 30 day trial (free install) before having to subscribe to their service, so I imagine that all someone in the US would need to do is download the app, find the apk, and copy it. But I don't know too much on that subject.
Here's the Play Store link.
I would super appreciate if someone could help me out.
Thanks in advance
So, I am not sure if that is against the XDA rules or not - seems like a gray area and all. I am not taking the chance, but I will give you a way to do it yourself.
http://www.phnworld.com/android/download-apks-from-googleandroid-play-store-apps-using-computer/611/
This link shows you how to use Chrome to download apps from the market. I have used it quite a bit to have backups without having to use the phone. Kind of neat if you want to theme an app as well.
Hopefully this will solve your issue without having to ask others to possibly break a XDA rule.
Good luck!
That will actually would work perfectly. Thank you for showing that to me. I didn't mean to bend any rules here, I figured it would be alright since it's a free app (isn't the same thing being done with the Google Play Music app?)
Anyway, the only problem with that is that apparently chrome no longer allows you to install extensions outside of the web store -_-
Do you work around that somehow?
Good Morning,
I have tried multiple ways to access this app from the market but continue to receive the "not available in yoir country" error (I am also in Canada).
Any help in obtaining the apk is greatly appreciated. The current version is 2.4.1.
Thank you kindly,
- Audi.
Canadian Solution Garmin Pilot
Audi!
Took me few tries but i finally got it working. The IPad was much easier to set up as you only needed a ITunes account with a USA address. That was pretty easy to do, setup the account and ensure your ITunes on your apple product is setup using that account. From there it was no issue to download the program.
Now the harder one was to set up the Android. I just got an Asus Nexus 7 yesterday. First, the service from these guys was pretty minimal to say the least. The problem with the Nexus is that it automatically picked up my location through my IP address. I called Asus to remove the regional setting and they were no help. They basically were unable to change this setting. I have tried many different options including removing the GPS and locations access but it did not worked.
The trick was to drive over to a friend which has a setup with a US IP address to get US Netflix content. The moment i logged into his network, I had the ability to download the Garmin Pilot. I will travel next week to Montana and Idaho and will be able to see how the system works. The only way I was able to add different airports in Alberta and Saskatchewan was to add them one at a time under user waypoints.
Hope this help.

Offline Google Translate Working for You?

I got very excite when I saw the news for the offline translator working. So I installed it , and downloaded all the languages I know, but it still wants an internet connection. If I read properly..., that's what the guy did, so your reply is useless.

My problem is that the offline files are not downloadable from China.
So I have to use a VPN and the one that I have let's me download only 100MB of data daily. If I remember properly, French and Chinese are about 150MB each and it would then take me more than 3 days to get them... That is is I don't reboot my phone meanwhile because doing so make the download failed and the partial file becomes unusable...
The app also keeps on trying to reconnect/resume the download constantly over my normal WiFi but can't so it uses my battery needlessly...
Long story short: anyone knows where the app stores those files?
Even better: anyone could be kind enough to share those 2 offline language packages (CH and FR) on-line somewhere?
I'd be very thankful for that.
---
Edit, I read here ( http://www.techinvestornews.com/Google/Google-Bloggers/offline-google-translate-for-android) that those ±150MB files are zipped and about 200MB once extracted onto the SD card. So it should be quite easy to locate them...
Dropbox anyone? Please pretty please

OK well thanks for offering this; I really appreciate it but somehow, I've succeeded in downloading the French pkg today by basically doing the exact same thing as I did yesterday...: I've started the download with the VPN and when it stopped because I've reached the daily limit, GT kept on downloading the rest of the file on my normal wifi. It was a partial success though because when I added the Chinese pack, it then just sat there at "starting download" (pic 1) or at "waiting for Wi-Fi" (pic 2) even though I had full signal (and green as Google checked-in...)...
And to answer your question on the OP, yes it (eng <--> french offline translation) now works for me on 2.3.7 (cm7). Only thing is that (as expected) the 'read aloud' (or text-to-speech) option is not available offline.
As for the location of the files, please see pic 3 for details.
And btw, French was 150Mb to download and stored under the tmp folder until GT installed it to the "fr" directory.
Tomorrow, I will try the same process with the Chinese package again, hopefully I will have some luck opnce more... :fingers-crossed:
Thanks again for the offer.

I have a also noticed this and don't understand why.
I have installed the English and Chinese offline language packs. They work fine as long as I have an Internet connection. However, when my Internet connection is down it complains and refuses to translate.
I double checked to see if the language packs where indeed on my phone and where also enabled in Google translation (and they where). It seems like the Google Translation app still needs an Internet connection available - perhaps not for the actual dictionaries but perhaps for other issues - and when it can't connect it refuses to translate.
So what is the big deal with offline language packs when you can't translate when you are really offline??

Help I have offline files but granulated refuses to translate offline for me too. Says OFFLINE. I confirmed I have the offline files.
it's still not perfect but you are missing a crucial detail
You also need to download the tts language pack it is in your settings/language and input then tts settings then download the language pack there as well. This then almost works perfectly. I'm on holiday in France and if you have done all the downloads of languages and want the converse function to work then you need to change the input language of the phone to language (French in my case). Couldn't understand my phone! But the converse function worked. Obviously not ideal.
I am currently in China. Their goverment is so "nice" to - at least currently - block the access to anything related to Google. Not even maps works. I am trying to use Google translate. The necessary offline packages for a couple of languages including Chinese are installed. As long, as my phone is offline, Google translate just works great. If I am online it just does not work at all. If I use a VPN connection, it tries to make an online translation, times out, then finally - after about 30s to 2min - it makes an offline translation.
So I thought, ok, lets just block internet access for Google translate. I installed DroidWall, blocked Google translate and tried to use it. The surprising message I get after this is:
Translation failed - Retry - No network - Offline package files may have been corrupted. Removing all packages & then re-downloading them may fix this issue.
The only true part of that message is the statement, that there is "No network" for this app. But the conclusion is completely nonsense. The offline packages are not corrupt and as soon as I allow internet access again, I get the same behaviour as mentioned above (incl. successful offline translations).
Any idea anyone?
Google Translate in China
Hello,
I am in China and offline google translate works fine for me. I recommend: 1) You delete and re-download the dictionaries, 2) You get a VPN.....droidvpn is free and it works well, 3) If you want your VPN to work better, download setdns and change your dns server.
Good luck.
Best,
Jon

Hello,
I am in China and offline google translate works fine for me. I recommend: 1) You delete and re-download the dictionaries, 2) You get a VPN.....droidvpn is free and it works well, 3) If you want your VPN to work better, download setdns and change your dns server.
Good luck.
Best,
Jon

I think that you did not read correctly. Offline translations work fine, if I am offline. Google translate does not work for me, if I am using WiFi or China mobile. It works too slow, if I use a VPN connection to my router at home in Germany, whereas any other internet-service works fine.
The error message about corrupted packages appear, if I am online (with or without VPN), but block internet access for Google Translate using DroidWall.
Google Translate
Hmmm.....don't know what to tell you about that. I only use offline google translate in China when wifi and data are turned off and it works fine for me....never tried blocking it with droidwall. Otherwise when I use droidvpn or my personal vpn online it works fine too.....

I just tried blocking GT with my firewall (AFWall+ ... I strongly suggest you to use that one instead Droidwall. It is almost the same but newer and more options and bugs fixed. Droidwall has long been abandoned....) and it does search for connection for a long time (because blocking it does not prevent the app to see that there is network available...) and then it translates offline. So no real problem for me here.
No problem on vpn either.
On this subject I suggest the real free (DroidVPN has a 100mb/day limit and the servers are often full) fqrouter2. But be aware that vpn uses more battery. If you have an older phone, you can also try shadowsocks but I do have slight issues with it....
So finally, I also suggest you to use the latest app version and delete and redownload offline packs.
If that doesn't solve it, then I suggest you find and try either the black or the clear (one I'm using) version of GT made by TBO (Team Blacked Out) sorry no time to give you a link atm.
If anything here helped, you know what button to press...
fqrouter2
Hello,
Fqrouter2 does not work for me....it keeps giving me a "failed to lauch" error. I do recommend that you change your dns server with an app like setdns (on your pc too!....use program called dnsjumper)....your VPN will work much better when you do.
Best,
Jon

Hi Al, thanks for the hint. AFWall+ works great! Google translate now doesn't show any errors any more and uses offline translation immediately under all conditions.

Well, I'm glad to hear that you've fixed your issue with G Translate
Now, please learn how to thank people that try to help you (even when it doesn't resolve your problem). People do not have to use their time and energy try to help; pressing the "thank" button is really a simple matter of showing respect and gratitude no matter the outcome....
And @Jon: I've tried your suggestion about dns change and that realky didnt go well and messed up my phone (simple app to switch to Google dns with 1 click). I ended up having to restore a 4 days old nandroid backup... It was just by curiousity, because like I said, fqrouter2 works very well for my setup as it is. Sorry to hear that it doesn't for you...
Cheers,
/AL
+1 AFWall+
Thanks for everyone's efforts!
