Hey guys, I swapped my LG Optimus 7 (Windows Phone) with my mum last week for her Sensation.
First thing I tried to do was access the internet. Wi-Fi is fine, but 3G is an issue. It works, but it takes around 10 seconds before Google starts loading, and another 30 before it's fully finished loading.
I downloaded the SpeedTest.net app, and the results are terrible. I'm getting around 1600ms ping, 5.5 kb/s down and 5.7 kb/s up.
There isn't a speed test app for WP7, but the loading times were almost instantaneous. It was fast enough to tether with and play some games, but with the Sensation, I can't log into anything because the connection times out.
I have near full 3G reception too, so that's not the issue. I've tried a factory reset, toggling ciphering and resetting the APN settings, but nothing's helped.
Any ideas?

If you are on stock, this issue should be taken either to your operator/carrier or HTC.

My carrier can see nothing wrong, and HTC support is as good as useless. They told me to do a full factory reset, which I've done twice now, but still nothing.

You can try to lock on to wcdma only and see if it helps. I kept going to edge and it drove me crazy, but after I locked on I get now 4g only. You can lock on by going to *#*#4634#*#* the you will see a menu with phone information, click it. Scroll down until you see your current network signal, there is a menu there press the corner and menu will pop up from there you can try different signals. Once you choose one, scroll down press refresh and your set see if this helps you. I use this method. Hope it helps. Good luck.

You should request your operator for the correct settings for your phone.
I have spoken to them, and the settings I have are correct. It's an issue with the phone itself.
Still no help from HTC. I might just have to switch handsets back.

So I decided to Root, S-Off and flash Coredroid v4.7 on my Inspire, but I leave it with the stock radio (12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M), but the signal seems pretty weak even on places where my Nexus one was at full strength my Inspire seems to only be able to grab 2 bars at much, and the WiFI connection seems week too, on my N1 I used to be able to get full signal from more than 20 meters, but my Inspire seems to lose it after 15 meters.
I read some posts and other blogs/forums and some attribute those issues to the radio version, so I hope someone can give me an opinion and tell me if I should Update the radio and to which version if so.
Thanks in advance.
Try this
For phone signal, try *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. This will bring up a screen that has 5 options, I went to phone and scroll to the bottom. Under the preferred network I changed it to GSM only as its an AT&T phone anyway, I was getting 1 or 2 bars at home and was missing calls left and right. after setting this, back out and shut the phone down then restart. I have all 4 bars now. It would also eat the battery, mine was on WCDMA preferred and I think it was searching for that signal constantly. There is a screen for wifi also but there is nothing adjustable there.

Odd that it would have WCDMA preferred as default. I just adjusted this as well and it improved the signal in my office. Good catch.
Gsm only does not work for me, my lame carrier runs on gsm but their mobile internet runs on their 3g so I need to connect to both. Setting it to wcdma/gsm auto seems to have improved the signal

Hey all, I'm on AT&T running radio 26.06.04.06_M. Any specific recommendations? GSM/CDMA Auto (PRL) seems to give me the best service based on bars, but that doesn't necessarily mean much (I'm on an HSDPA connection with 3/4 fluctuating right now).
Also, I think I might not have HSUPA enabled with this radio, I'm only getting .56Mbps upload and around a 2.79 download (Whereas on standard 3G with my old iPhone I typically pulled around a 1.2). HSDPA is without a doubt enabled and it shows that I'm connected on that network, but is there a better radio I should try out?

This is starting to bug me..... for no reason the 4g connection and even when I turn off the mobile network, wait a few minutes and turn it back on, it still wont work until I reboot the phone. Sometimes rebooting it doesn't work and I have to pull the battery.
Anyone know whats causing this? When this is happening I see the ^ arrow on the 4g connection lit up like a christmas tree but nothing is uploading and theres no data connection....... HELP!
Mine dropped Last night for the first time. When I first got the phone it flip from 3g to 4g at my job. Last night finally went dead. I rebooted and still no network. Then I used the new LTE switch to keep it @3g only. It worked.

Hey Stoneskin,
I live in Hawaii and I have the very same issue as well. I picked up 4g easily in the "so called" extended 4g coverage region when I first got the TB. Then about the middle of last week, poof, no more 4g except for in the true 4g areas. My thought is because so many people were having 4g connectivity issues in these extended area, VZW simply stopped allowing it as a troubleshooting measure that apparently is still going on. I brought this up to VZW tech support and they were clueless as usual. I also posted in the VZW Community Forum hoping to get an answer, but none thus far.
you could try dialing ##778# and pressing send, select edit mode, password is 000000 and then under modem settings change it to rev A. then press the menu button to save and reboot. it has helped me out in the El paso area. friend showed it to me the other day Far as i can tell is that it disables the new network that allows voice and data at the same time since that's the only difference i have noticed other than not loosing my connection anymore. I just a heads up this does not work on the latest version of virus rom RC1B3 sensless but did with previous version and several other roms i had tried

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work. VZW must have changed something to where extended coverage area no longer get 4g. Only those in true 4g areas. I really think this has a lot to do with the folks experiencing the constant drop 4g issues. They must have rationalized that if the extended area for 4g is not up to par and forcing 3g would be better. Only way I can explain it. From consistent 4g to only 3g. I sure miss the speeds.
my phone will drop connection and then not reconnect. no voice, no data. (wifi still works)
what I've tried:
1. Different radios/firmware
2. different roms
3. different preferred network types
4. switching airplane mode on and off
what I haven't tried:
1. different sim
2. calling tmobile for suggestions
What else could cause this problem?
it could be a hardware issue
Hello,
I have the same issue than you !
I am facing issues such as call drop and no 3G data connection in some area in my region since I have 5 signal bar and H letter displayed (HSDPA connection)...
I have found a workaround consisting in:
1 - Switching to GSM Only mode (2G Only)
2 - Desabling Mobile Data Connection
Then it works, I can pass and receive voice call ...
Regards,
Nino
I'm new to the Sensation and having the exact same issue.
Followed the stickies in the Dev section to S-OFF, root and bypass SIM lock and then once the SIM card is inserted I get only GSM and no data.
If you use *#*#4636#*#* in the Dialer and go to Phone Information do you notice that it always switches to WCDMA preferred? I change to GSM/CDMA auto PRL like all my other Android devices (on Rogers Wireless) and it disconnects, reconnects but only for GSM and no data. It sometimes says it's connected to EDGE or HSPA but no icon at the top right and then it reverts back to GSM.
I have also tried flashing virtually every firmware, ensuring that the radio and RILs match (I had an HTC Desire Z so the HTC phones are not new to me entirely). I don't know what else to do. I tried a Bell SIM card and tried all of the same options to no avail.
I really hope someone can figure this out. I don't want to have destroyed a phone that I just bought for my wife. Her Atrix broke and I purchased that outright as well, so this is really killing my wallet. I've been through about 10 Android devices and I wouldn't say I'm a newb, but I really do feel like one right now. This sucks!

Airplane mode is a feature of the phone and turns off all radios. You can hold the power button and choose airplane mode or use the quick toggle in the notification window. Since it sounds like you may be in an area with weak 4G, you can also use an app called Phone Info to set it to CDMA auto (PRL) under Device Information. You can also change it back to LTE/CDMA/EvDO if you want it to switch as normal.
With the Verizon S3, is there the need to do *228 (or *22899) ? I did this every so often on my old HTC Incredible.

Doesn't work on LTE devices. A reboot essentially does the same thing. Some have recommended pulling the battery with the phone on, removing the sim card for about 30sec and then putting everything back in.
Thanks, I know what airplane mode is, wasn't sure where the APN setting was. I will look in to phone info though.

Are you guys also experiencing the "No Sim Card" and "No Network Connection" issues?
Or is this an entirely different issue?
When this phone goes to 3g, it does seem extra bad on how long it takes to switch back to 4g. i have areas where i live where it goes to 3g when going in between hill (less than a 50 foot stretch) and it will not go back to 4g for over 10 minutes if i dont manually do it. Not to mention my LTE never goes above 10 mbps on the best days
Somewhat related...If you use Anycut to create a shortcut to IOTHiddenMenu, enter the ##DATA# Menu, edit. Under "Advanced", there is an LTE toggle, under "Other" > "HDR/1X" you can set the phone mode, and then under "Other" > "LTE APN Settings" you can somewhat modify the APN settings, reset and discard. If it asks for a password, it's 000000.
I gave these a try. I'm trying to find a way for my phone to favor 4G when there's a 4G signal, no matter how weak.
Yesterday I did a test, 3G with 3 bars vs 4G with 0 to 1 and 4G had consistently faster download speeds and shorter ping times. The upload varied from similar to 3G to slower.

probably easier said than done. The phone info app can force LTE but you lose voice and text.
Ya I found that out yesterday when testing speeds. I went to send a text then make a call and no luck
Otherwise 4G service where I live could be excellent at one spot then a mile away no service. If I had excellent 4G consistently I'd consider GoSMS which I believe has the option for data text and also a separate VoIP app
Ah well hopefully something will be figured out eventually. With a strong 4G signal 4G is considerably faster and more consistent than my 20mbps home broadband

I've had similar issues with my network. I had no 4G in 4G areas, but mainly my wifi would disconnect randomly and 3G also dropped to 1X a lot. I ended up having to send it back and get another one. So far no issues. Also the new ones have an "Updated" sticker on them. I think it was just a software update they applied, but I never got the OTA on my old phone.

Not sure if anyone will have the same luck I have with the "Phone Info" app, but with it I was able to get my 4g service back and my phone is functioning normally again. Just open the app, select Device Information and scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "LTE/CDMA/EvDo" then get out of the app.. 4g should return shortly there after. When I looked at it, my device was set to "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)"
I did some searching around and found a couple of pages with ideas but they have not worked so far. Here's the deal, my son's said his Nexus 5 was getting pretty bad reception so I took a look at it. After some toggling of the network settings I discovered that it will only connect to LTE, not to HSPA(+) or Edge. Where we are, we have somewhat weak LTE (2 of the three towers have been "modernized" with LTE and band 2 HSPA+, one has not and it's slightly closer to us). We have a Cell-Fi repeater so we get strong HSPA+ signal in our house. His sim works fine in a Nexus 4 with the hybrid radio getting Edge, HSPA+ and LTE. My nano sim with adapter that works fine in the Nexus 4 exhibits the same problems in the Nexus 5. I tried formatting the cache from the stock recovery menu and am now looking to do a factory reset since I never did oem unlock this phone so I can't just flash a radio to test.
My gut tells me it's hardware so I have my son rebuilding his phone environment on the Nexus 4 so that we can do a factory reset to see if that helps and I'll unlock it at that point. If it doesn't fix it, I've already started the conversation with the play store. My question is, anyone else seen anything like this? Anything else I should try out?

if lte is in your area, and not a perfect signal, itll still choose to connect to lte by default. if you lose your lte connection, then itll connect to H or 3G, and so on. if you do not want it to connect to lte, go to the phones main settings, mobile networks, then change the preferred network type from lte to 3G. or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, chose phone info, then change the network type to wcdma preferred.

Thanks for the reply, I understand all that. I don't know if I asked clearly enough or not but the problem we are seeing here is that this particular phone can only connect to LTE which is weak inside my house. So, when it tries to switch over, it just won't connect. I also tried to make a call which will switch to HSPA+ and that too fails. Going to the info menu and selecting WCDMA preferred nets me a phone that won't connect, selecting GSM results in the same. LTE only or GSM/LTE works only if it picks up an LTE signal. Ditto for selecting 2G, 3G or LTE preferred in the Mobile Networks menu. I've also reset the APN's, confirmed that the settings match my MotoX, etc and still no joy.
Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

ok, i understand now. i didnt know that it wasnt connecting to h or 3G when it should. to me it sounds like a device ready to get an rma. i mean there is a hardware mod that could possibly fix it, but its not worth the trouble. if you can get an rma, get an rma.

Yea, according to the nice person I spoke to at the play store, I should indeed qualify for an RMA and I should find out in the next day or so. I purchased the phone new in box from someone and they were able to find the phone and they are now attributing the phone to me.
I am curious about the hardware mod though. Is this just for Edge/HSPA or is it for signal in general? If it's signal in general then I'm not sure I'd want to try it since this phone used to work just fine.

yup, thats it
but i would chose the rma route, as the nexus 5 shouldnt be behaving that way.

Yes, agreed. OK, just asking around as much as possible. I'm betting he will be getting a new phone.
