[Q] Evo 3d Relocking/bootloading/rom flashing hell...p - General Questions and Answers

Hi, I'm new to the forum and first post. I used to think I was smart, not so much anymore...and here's why.
1. I have an s-on 1.5 hboot cdma Sprint Evo 3d that I originally rooted using this method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
I have flashed synergies, cleanrom, miui, cyanogen, and mean rom. The last rom I was with before the issues was mean rom. I saw the new Mean Rom ICS, downloaded it, and noticed that the phone was really glitchy.(this particular rom was advertised with vm ics leak free) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645211.
2. Heres where the fun begins. I thought I may have downloaded a bad kernel so I used flash image gui to try and get the recommended kernel...didn't go too well. then saw the 2.17 file to PG86IMG workaround and tried that...I couldn't get that to work either. at this point I was pretty frustrated with the way my screen was acting up, not recognizing inputs, or only working in landscape, so I decided that restoring my phone back to stock would be the best bet. I couldn't have been more wrong.
3. im running windows 8 beta, so some functionality and compatibility is out the window here at this point...meaning fastboot, sdk, apk do not function correctly (or at least not for me...) in this OS. So I downloaded the VMware trial and the latest version of Ubuntu and got the fastboot and all that going on there. it was at this point I was able to relock my phone using some of the more popular workarounds for the issue on this forum. However, when I RELOCKED, I also received a SECURITY WARNING. at this point I could not get past the bootloader. I did unlock it, but now its worse...
4. I've spent the last couple of days trying to get the phone to work to no avail...Here's where I'm at now. New sd card. superwiped. Twrp v 1.1.1(I like the tp). I CAN voldwn/pwr to boot. It CAN go into recovery. It CAN talk to my computer in ubuntu, but if you decide to help me by giving me Ubuntu script, please dumb it down for me. It CANNOT boot any roms past the HTC screen. I have tried loading various roms and such with an equal amount of success.
5. So here is what im hoping for. An outcome in which I still have the Evo3d, S-off, and a solid rom. What I need is the assistance to get my phone to load and boot any rom at all. Thanks in advance.

try fastboot boot boot.img
in the zip of your rom there should be a boot.img try to fastboot flash boot boot.img ( put a copy of the file in the directory you run adb from) its what i had to do i am running virtuous ics rom works perfectly on my phone not one glitch yet but i need s-off if you can help i even had the same bootloader error that you had when i tried to relock

Thanks, that actually did it. I set the .img file to the android folder in linux, ran the 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' command and it booted like no other, lol. Now im like you, still wanting to get to S-off but cant figure out how to load a stock rom or even which one I should get. I did flash an anthrax kernel (rc2.1 zram rls) if that matters. do you happen to know which rom to flash?

Inspire 4G Reverting on boot

I have a really strange issue and I've done everything I can think of to fix it to no avail. I'm hoping someone here can give me a few pointers.
I'm working on a Inspire 4G for someone. The issue is that the phone reverts to a specific state no matter what I do. For example, if I wipe the phone, the phone boots back up to Froyo with all of his stuff on it. If I try loading an RUU or IMG file (Froyo or Gingerbread), it will "take" but boot to Froyo with all of his stuff on it. It's almost like it wipes itself and loads this image out of nowhere...
Another weird thing, which may or may not be related, is that I see a weird download in his notification tray. Apparently, the file named "WinBej2Setup.exe" was downloaded twice. I did some research on that and everything I see points to some kind of malware for a Windows PC.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but you do have S-off correct? I'm not sure about the weird file, have you tried to access it? Also what other roms have you tried to flash? Also what method did you use to root?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
I don't have S-OFF. Here's all the bootloader info:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.85.0019
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.06.04.06_m
Emmc-boot
Dec 27 2010, 14:47:30
As for the file, I'm not sure where it's located. I can only see the notifications that they have finished downloading.
As for the history on the phone, I really can't say much since it's not my personal phone. The person I'm doing this for said he tried to root it using the ACE Hack kit and "some ADB commands" and failed. That's all the information I was given.
At this point, I can load anything to the phone but it will just revert to Froyo in the exact state that it's currently in.
For example, I just tried installing Gingerbread via the official RUU file. It goes through the entire process without a hiccup. Then it reboots and takes forever to load; but when it does, it's back on Froyo with all the owners files...
Personally I would root it, make sure s off, and make sure to format the memory card the corrrect way also.
Then I would install a custom rom.
And the file you speak of is also a game called bejewled. My girl loves that game.

This p-o-s I'm addicted to, and my woman is jealous of.
Reformat the sd card then do an official upgrade thru HTC. Go to the website and download the Gingerbread RUU and HTC Sync. If this doesn't work, complete the root process as suggested.Tell your friend you can't install exe files on Android. They need to be apk files or zip files if installed thru recovery.

I appreciate the advice guys, but I think you guys are overlooking what I'm trying to say... I've already tried running the official upgrades from HTC. The RUU says it's completed fine, but on reboot, I'm back on Froyo with all the same stuff on it.
I've even gone as far as extracting the IMG file out of the RUU and loading it through the bootloader. If I do this, it does the same thing-- says everything loaded fine but reverts on boot back to Froyo in the same state it was in prior.
I can temp root the phone using psneuter but that's about it. I have no idea how I'm going to achieve S-OFF if everything I do is wiped on reboot...
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to lock the entire phone down in a state where nothing can be changed; and if so, is there a way to disable this feature.
Are you sure you do not have a file on the root of the card named PD98IMG.zip? You may be installing this every time the phone boots.
How can you install a non RUU ROM when you have s-on?
Something does not make sense here. Also the exe file you talked about has no use on android as android can do nothing with it. Where do you actually see it?
Go back to square 1. What ROM is on the phone now? Do you have clockwork installed?
I'm not sure how to many different times/ways I can explain the same thing. The phone is on stock AT&T Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3). Currently, there is no custom recovery and it's not rooted.
The issue is that the phone always reverts (almost like it's doing a nandroid restore in the background) during boot to Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) with all his stuff on it.
I've installed Gingerbread 2.3.3 (2.47.502.7) via the official AT&T RUU file
I've extracted the PD98IMG.zip from the Gingerbread 2.3.3 (2.47.502.7) RUU and loaded it via bootloader
I've installed Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) via the official AT&T RUU file.
I've extracted the PD98IMG.zip from the Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) RUU and loaded it via bootloader
I've done a factory reset from within the phone
I've deleted user data & cache with the stock recovery
After performing each and everyone of these steps, the phone hangs on the white HTC screen while booting and eventually boots up to Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) along with all the guys stuff on it.

I agree completely; however, the issue I'm running into very unusual. With that being said, I'm trying to point out anything unusual that I notice with the phone. This file most likely has absolutely nothing to do with the problem I'm encountering, but I mentioned it just in case.

I wish this was the case; however, this wouldn't explain why all his stuff is still on the phone... The only time there is a PD98IMG.zip on the sdcard is when I put it there. Even so, I would have to boot the phone into bootloader mode and go through the prompts to get it take. More so, even if I did do this, it would just revert upon rebooting (hints the problem).
I appreciate the help but I think the problem is a little deeper than what has be presented.
That clears it up for me. You obviously know what you are doing. You mentioned "wipe" a few times which confused me. Didn't think there was a way to actually wipe it without a recovery installed. Sounds like one helluva confusing issue there. Goodluck.
Its always going to revert back to the previous state because its still s-on.
You need to get s-off before anything will change.

This I know is not true-- You can load signed code with S-ON. If what you said was true there would be no way to load an official RUU or OTA...
I appreciate the help, but telling me to get S-OFF (which I've clearly stated that I'm unable to do) is not getting me anywhere.
Is the original ROM branded? Have you tried installing a PD98IMG.zip from a gold card? Just a thought.

WiFi error's after flashing HTC unlock bootloader

Boy oh boy, I had a really tough few days trying to flash a custom rom. I was pretty heavy into flashing roms from the G1 days until I got my sensation on the day it was released. I then took a long break. Well 2 days ago I decided to Unlock my Bootloader through the HTC website. Everything went well. I did notice the ******UNLOCKED****** in the bootloader I also noticed the S-ON(security was still on). I didn't think this mattered. Was I ever wrong. With that S-On you cannot flash new radio's. I have never been able to flash a PG58IMG.zip file from hboot/fastboot. I can however flash recovery's from fastboot using (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img).
Seems as if every single rom I tried needs the Security-OFF to work correctly. I was able to put clockwork mod 5.0 on my phone, and install super wipe, and several roms, the problem I ran into is I would get a error under the switch for wifi. Wifi would not work on any of the 5 roms I tried before this one. I was wanting to give up and go back to stock for several hours. I tried the RUU to bring me back to build 1.27 and build 1.29 both were unsuccessful. I was stuck at build 1.73.401.2 and no way possible to get back to stock. And picture this living in a area with tmobile that is still using the edge network(2 ****ing g) OMFG I was so mad trying to even boot a new rom without wifi is a nightmare, took me literally 20 minutes to download rom manager. Anyway's this rom was the last one I tried before busting my phone into pieces.
Rom's I tried:
1. Android Revolution 3.6.1, and 4.1 (3.6.1 booted but had no wifi)
2. RCMix 3.5 v04 (bootloop)
3. LeeDroid booted fine (no wifi)
4. I believe there was one other I tried. NO GO
5. Then I flashed this one late last night, and to my surprised it worked.
I was so happy I almost pissed myself.
Oh yeah I tried many irc channels, one was the revolutionary.io irc channel, I was able to successfully run the rev.io tool and it showed as a success however my S-was still ON. I talked to these guys for about 45 minutes looking for other ideas. They pretty much told me I was screwed and that it had never been tested after you unlocked through HTC. And it simply might never work.
Anyway I guess what I am getting at. For anyone else that might have to go through what I did.
1. How in the world can you get you phone back to complete stock?
2. Why is this happening?
3. Why is my wifi not working with any other rom? And everyone else's is?
4. How do I go about getting my S-OFF?
5. Does anyone know if you can RELOCK your bootloader through HTC so that I can turn the SECURITY-OFF and "then" unlock the bootloader.
I probably have more question's. I just wanted to see if I might be able to get a few answers from you fine people. Help me understand what in the world is going on and how many other people are dealing with what I am dealing with.

Personally i would just do the normal s-off method as it gives you a little more freedom compared to HTC unlocking method.
My wifi is dead too, but i have no way of fixing it at all, i've got a thread called "wifi is dead" in the q+a section of the sensation forum.
Let me know if you get yours working, i imagine that if you revert your phone back to stock again and then use the alpha rev method that you will have better luck.
1. You can Relock your bootloader using HTC site but this time u will see Relocked instead of Locked
2. No idea
3. Did you try resetting your router? Works for me. Also try flashing a different radio.
4. No idea
5. You can relock bootloader on HTC site but have no idea of you can unlock it with Revolutionary again.
Try write secureflag command, just search for.the correct one on xda. Also, try flashing your RUU and then s-offing via revo.

Help needed please.... got into a dead end with my One X

Hi all, here's a long story cut short:
1. Flashed the stock 2.23.707.2 de-odexed rom on my One XL (the S4 version of One X), was running 4.0.4 fine
2. Didn't like the new radio that came with 2.23, tried flashing back to the 1.88 Asia radio which worked best for me, took much longer than usual then appeared to be successfully flashed only to find in bootloader the radio version hasn't changed and once rebooted the baseband info becomes "unknown" and the phone sees no signal at all, probably a messed up radio...
3. (the stupidest of my moves) Relocked my phone using the HTCdev way in an attempt to RUU back to stock and start from scratch, failed with an error code140 (not surprisingly due to the higher hboot version), then noticed the HTCdev unlock code doesn't work anymore. Tried obtaining the unlock_code.bin again in case something changed, but new code is no good either.
Therefore I now have a phone that is Relocke and can't use TWRP recovery, can't boot up as it hits a block at the initial setup (explained below), and one that for some strange reason cannot be unlocked again. I can boot to bootloader, go to fastboot and push the unlock_code.bin file via usb, it will go through and i see the normal unlock confirmation screen on the phone, but choosing yes each time the phone will reboot and when checking in bootloader it still shows the phone is "Relocked". What's worse, after "unlcoking bootloader" the phone now goes into the setup wizard each time it boots up, but perhaps due to the messed up radio thing it can't read the carriers available and thus only shows the white screen with the HTC logo on it, no way forwar. This is where I get completely stuck now.
I can't post in the Development page due to my freshness in xda, but I am not a complete newbie and have owned a Desire, a Sensation and now the One X, each time going through the root/supercid/custom recovery/custom rom/flashing radios processes without major problems so I will say I do have basic knowledge with all these things.
Anyway if someone can shed some light on how I can get out of this mess without having to send the phone back to HTC for some pricey repair, it would be extremely appreciated.
Thanks for your attention,

Try this
First, make sure you're in fastboot mode, then type 'fastboot oem rebootRUU'
Next, make sure you have the .zip RUU file in the same folder and type 'fastboot flash zip XXX.zip' (replace XXX with whatever it's called, of course)
Now, you can see what is actually happening when you are flashing the RUU. In my case, there was 2 points where it told me to "re-flush image immediately" or something like that. When I ran the last command again (fastboot flash zip XXX.zip) it went a bit further each try, but it took until the 3rd try before it was successful.
thanks to kilo89 for method

Hi mate thanks for offering advice and help. I have not had to use your method as I decided to give the HTC bootloader unlock code one final try before proceeding to your rescue plan and all of a sudden it was successful again. I got into recovery and did a nandroid restore so am back online again, but have nevertheless made note of your method in case I become stuck again in the future. Thanks anyway for your reply! :good:

[Q] White Screen Since Kernal Change

I am praying that someone can help me, today i think i have done something really stupid in that i am still new to flashing ROMS etc but have unlocked my bootloader through HTC DEV website, following the below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631861&highlight=hboot+1+27+flashing+rom
Anyway i did this a while ago and have had a few ROM's installed with no issues, for the past month i have been using the VIPER 1.4.1 ROM with no issues but experienced a big battery drain so i decided after a bit of investigation to install a new Kernal to replace the Bricked one that i already installed.
Anyway flashed a new kernal using the VENOM hub and the phone rebooted and this is where all my issues started it refused to go past the white HTC screen and will not boot the phone any further...............now i'm stuck!!!
I have been all over the web researching into how to fix this and have formatted my sd card stupidly as i have read that my backups would have fixed this but i deleted these files so now i am completley out of ideas as i cannot get past the white screen.
I have also tried reinstalling the ROM after a full wipe along with also reinstalling the Bricked kernal and also trying to install another ROM but still no luck.
I am able to boot the phone into recovery (4EXT) but after everything i do the phone will not go past the white screen.
I have tried looking through the many posts and done numerous searches but i cannot find anything to help me, i have even tried to reflash the boot.img using the cmd prompt but the HTC Sync software keeps failing as i have Windows 7 because it will not install "HTC Driver Installer 4.0.0.009".
Any help would be great as i really don't want to be the owner of an expensive paper weight, also i am still new and struggle with techy language if you can help me.
Also i would have tried to ask the qusetion on the Venom forum page but my XDA profile won't let me as i am usually a lerker because of my newness to flashing ROM's.
Cheers in advance if you can help me!!!
when you flashed the new kernel the only thing you had to do is flash the boot.img
now do this:
enable smartflash from 4ext and immediately flash the rom

Hi,
If you want the new windows 7 & 8 drivers, look HERE
Reboot the pc when updated.
Try just flashing ARHD ROM
This is nearer stock.
Do not add any fancy extras, just stock.
Go to 4 EXT recovery, enable smartflash, and flash ROM straight away.
If this does not work, you will have to consider a RUU.

My issue is I had an htc inspire 4g s-off rooted with cyanogen 9 rom installed I had no problem running the Ace kit with the old inspire 4g. A while ago the phone was ran over so I bought a replacement and went about the same way I did before to achieve S-off and root and ran into some problems. The phone is 2.3.3 gingerbread I have installed all the necessary drivers and ran the tool kit. I am having trouble running the root kit the first time I ran it I got an error saying /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip no such file or directory rm failed for /sdcard/pd98img.zip no such file or directory gold card goldcard.img and than the following installation already exists.. so it continues and reboots the phone to htc logo with black background than just boots to homescreen and the tool kit says radio downgrade failed eiter goldcard failed or usb connections not working 100 any help would be appreciated ive attatched some screens of the errors.
Solved issue might help future users
So I found out what had happened and fixed the issue. I hope this helps future users that come across any issues. Somewhere a long the lines the phone I had purchased already had an unlocked boot-loader so what I ended up doing was running a command prompt and trying fastboot to re-lock boot loader with no luck I don't know how the person who sold this phone online messed it up this much. So I tried powering down and booting into bootloader via power volume down and clicked fastboot and it worked. The command I used was
Code:
# fastboot oem lock
After Re-locking the boot-loader I still came across an issue and found out there was a custom rom installed which I have no idea how the previous owner did with s-on still so I located stock RUU att inspire 4g courtesy of marsdta's post which can be found on the forums here is a link to save any one else some time http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959. I used the gingerbread RUU as my phone was stock with gingerbread, I found this out the hardway trying a froyo RUU. After this I could not install the stock RUU following exact instructions I was stumped as my phone would not accept the stock RUU. All it did was just sit at waiting for devices. So here is what I did to solve that issue I powered down the phone and boot into the boot-loader, selected fastboot, and than ran the stock RUU exe, which then did the trick instead of errors it actually installed. Once stock RUU was loaded I was than able to successfully run the ace tool kit. Which worked flawlessly. Now I have s-off, root, cwm, and cyanogen 10.1 installed without a hassle. Figured this information would be usefull to any one buying an att inspire4g/DHD that had been used before. Knowing this information 5 hours ago would have saved me so much time. I hope this saves the next person time who decides to purchase one of these phones not knowing exactly what had been done to it as some re-sellers neglect to check or mention what they had done previously to the device. I even went as far as installing clock work mod recovery touch which worked like a charm do not use the 6.0 or higher version as they do not work or at least did not for me. This was as simple as getting the 5.8.1.5 cwm touch and flashing it via fastboot by navigating to the directory in which it was located and used this command
Code:
# /fastboot flash recovery "recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-aace.img"
-replace file name in parenthesis with your file name-
boom done and done I really hope this helps out any future xda visitors that run into these types of issues
