so basically i dont know anything about rooting and all the other stuff about android..
so can someone explain to me some guidelines about rooting
is it safe? if ever i brick my device, will there be a way to unbrick? just some questions about rooting

I don;t have a 6200 so i don't know how to root it, it could be the same as the 6210 but I'm not sure. Look in the development section.
I can answer a couple of these other things but you could really get the answers quickly by googling them.
CWM
Clockwork Mod Recovery, a custom recovery as opposed to the stock recovery. You have to have a custom recovery installed in order to flash custom ROMs.
ROM
The operating system (OS)
Kernel
Facilitates communication between the OS and the hardware.
Flashing
A general term for installing a custom ROM, the stock firmware, a mod or an update. There are many ways of flashing and not all devices do it the same way. Samsung uses Odin and also certain files can be flashed in the stock recovery if it is unlocked. With HTC you can flash certain files directly in hboot if the device is unlocked otherwise you need a custom recovery.
Recovery
This is a software layer that you can flash to your phone that allows you to boot the phone into a utility state where you can install roms, flash things like patches or modifications, backup your rom/kernel, etc. When people refer to a nandroid backup, they are referring to a backup made here. It's a snapshot of your phone that lets you mess with things and restore back to that point in time should you screw something up. You pretty much can't brick your phone at this level - it's all just files and filesystems. You can also mount your SD card to reader mode for connection to a computer, do a factory reset of data, and a few other fun things like root your rom here. You should only root your rom if it is a stock rom that has not been rooted yet. Rooting a rooted rom will usually unroot your root so you don't have root. (copied from tspderek in the Rezound forum)

I should also add that Rooting (root) is just adding the superuser binaries to the system/bin folder and nothing else. Its pretty much the same thing as an administrator in windows, it allows you access to system folders. Rooting and installing a custom recovery are not the same thing, two different animals, though some devs will included both in their method for rooting a device. I prefer to do mine separately as I don't always want to install a custom recovery.
Recently I hard-bricked my Tab whilst installing a Rom on it (Brick Bug). Now I have a replacement, and it's about time I replaced the HC with something else.
I plan to use the 'Singha ROM ICS P6800DXLP7' ROM and ' Dedraks' GT-P6800' kernel. I'm guessing installation for both is via CWM, but that is how I bricked my tab last time. How can I work around this as to not brick it again? Odin? Which do I install first? Any guidance would really be appreciated!

Share some detail procedure...wipe on stock rom, custom rom, kernel...etc which end with brick?
For now I believe safe atm..
- From stock ICS

- Install cwm using Mobile Odin
- Boot to cwm recovery
- Flash custom rom and custom kernel
- Reboot recovery NOT reboot system.
- Full wipe and fix permission
- Reboot system to home screen
That what I always do
Here's what works for me
first, d/l CWM to SD card.
then power down.
reboot into download mode ,PC Odin is my install of choice for the roms...
then power down again after the new rom installs and re-boots
re-boot into recovery and choose install zip from SD and choose CWM (which is a temporary install)
dont wipe anything, just choose to install zip and then choose your new kernel.
After kernel (a safe one) installs, then re-boot system.
Ive never bricked this tab or my GN7000 Note

correct me if im wrong, but as long as you do not factory reset in stock ics recovery you are okay. Right?
Some Note GT 7000 guys reported that they bricked their phablets by copping large files (being on ICS). If this doesn't affect our P6800s, then you are not wrong.
I had installed LQ2 without wiping anything. But had many Screen Offs and Shut Downs, so I considered to risk the clean install.
Did it with Mobile Odin Pro, but first
Ensured that I already have CWM 6.0.0.1
Flashed Dedraks Kernel.
In Mobile Odin chosen "open file..." and then the particular md5 file,
BUT EXCLUDED:
1. Kernel
2. Recovery
Then I selected "wipe" and "clean", crossed my fingers and everything went OK.
Not quite everything, because I lost root, although I am pretty sure that I did not unselect "everroot'.
It was not a big issue. Installed again "root.zip" via CWM recovery.
Its about a week since then and I have nothing to complain.

I'm thinking about rooting my Note 10.1 (mostly because I want to use DicertoryBind/Link2SD) via ClockworkMod Recovery.
My questions:
I won't receive any OTA updates, cause the status will be custom, right?
I want to stay on stock FW, what can I do to update my tablet if there is a new OTA:
Can I directly flash the FW from sammobile with odin or are they not campatible with cwm? Would that mean that every time there is a new OTA, I have to unroot, flash back to stock recovery, get the OTA, flash back cwm and root again?
Isn't there a way to flash the update while keeping all my data (just like normal OTA does) and root ?

Okay, that means I download the firmware from for instance sammobile, flash it using ODIN (will that be PDA only, like flashing cwm?), and then re root means install superSU again from cwm or installing cwm completely new?

Hey, thanks so far, I just installed CWM, everything went fine, but if I look at the system status it still says "offical", does that mean I can receive OTA's? Or won't that work cause of CWM?
Also I believe before it didn't say "official" but "normal".
*edit* okay, nevermind, after a reboot it sys now "custom"
Since you have rooted your device you can also use Mobile ODIN to flash the roms from sammfirmware directly on your note 10.1. You just make sure everroot is ticked but if you think you might loose root then have both the CWM.tar file saved on your device, its a tiny file so no real space lost or if you don't care about CWM but want root access then keep the exynosexploit.apk on your device. I have everything I need on the sd card in case I cant get to a PC. Much better when I'm not tied to the PC...

Thanks so far, but theres one question left: From what you've said I think it's possible to flash with odin or mobile odin while CWM is still installed, what will happen to CWM after the flash? Is it completely gone (stock recovery comes with the firmware?!) or does "re root" only mean that I have to reinstall superSU with CWM?
You will go back to stock recovery but you might retain root if you ticked everoot function....
As I said earlier, you can reflash CWM onto your Note using mobile ODIN if you have the CWM.tar file stored on your device...
+1 for Mobile Odin if you're wanting to stay stock.
Use Exynos Abuse to root the first time.
Install Mobile Odin pro.
Backup your EFS partition off the device.
Install CWM using Mobile Odin and make a nandroid backup.
Back up apps with Titanium if required.
Download the new stock from you want and use Mobile Odin to install with Everoot selected.
Use Mobile Odin to install CWM.
Simplest method I've found by far.

After rooting with exynos abuse root, can you just do a factory reset to make you stock again to get OTA's?
I don't believe so (prepared to be corrected) but if you reinstall the stock rom without Everoot ticked and factory reset you'll be back to stock unmodified.

Never tried but I don't think so, The OTA checks for an unmodified system and even though stock recovery says its official the status in settings is "Custom".
What if I'm on the stock rom (never went custom) and stock recovery. All I did was root? Would a recovery restore allow me to get OTA's?
if you are on stock recovery then why would you restore recovery.
Yes if you are rooted only you will receive OTA if you are on the orignal rom (rom from country which note was purchased irrespective of the version you are on)

That is my situation, exactly. So, I can take OTAs in my present situation? I used #2 root option from zedomax. I haven't changed anything or used a custom rom. All I want to do is get current on my updates, and retain root and CWM.
Should I also use TriangleAway, and at what point? Thank you.

If you used method 2 you have replaced the stock recovery... That's what CWM recovery means...
You're flash counter will now be one and need to be reset using triangle away. No OTA for you...

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (US Wifi+IR) P3113 [ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2] which is still 100% stock. I plan on installing a custom rom, but first I want to make a complete backup of everything.
I know I need to use a custom recovery (I plan on using ClockworkMod) and flash the custom rom. I don't have any problems with that part.
I also have all of my data already backed up. I plan on doing a full factory reset before installing anything anyway.
My main issue is that I want to backup the original stock ROM and all other partitions/images before making any permanent changes.
Since the device doesn't support fastboot I can't just "fastboot boot cwm-recovery.img" to do a temporary boot to backup the stock rom and recovery. All the instructions I've seen indicate I must first flash a new recovery image then boot the device from that. This would cause me to not have a backup of the stock recovery image.
I didn't see any backup options in Heimdall or ODIN either. No luck with Check Fus either.
Is there a way to backup the stock recovery image without flashing anything to the device first?

This is exactly what I have been trying to do too. I have searched the forums and google and haven't been able to figure out how to do this either. I was actually fixing to post the same questions myself and thought I should do one last search before I did, which lead me to this thread
I have the same tab and build (P3113 - ROM Build Number: IMM76D.P3113UEBLH2). As an android newbie I have been reading/researching for hours a day since Christmas and there is still a lot I don't understand. This is the first step I would like to take though and I intend on doing a full factory reset before installing anything too.

You should find and download the stock rom for your device on the net. I myself do not recommend you to install custom rom as it can brick ur device.
For the backup:-
1. For the backup of your apps download this app (App Backup and Restore) from the play store. It can backup ur apps and then can also restore them back but also dont forget to take the backup of this app itself.
2. Connect your tablet/phone to your pc/laptop and then copy all the files in your SD card and Device and store them to seperate folders on your pc/laptop.
3. Now the backup of all your files is created.
According to my information you cannot backup your current rom you will have to download the stock rom from the net which you need and then fla**** in case of a mishappening or incase you wish to revert back.

@kunalthakur - There isn't an official Samsung download source that one can use. Most of the other downloads I've seen have had the recovery.img modified to enable the backup in the first place. We want a trustworthy (verified no malicious software added) stock OEM rom/recovery with no modifications.
I have had some initial success getting the Samsung Kies software to attempt to download the current official ROM from official Samsung servers. I guess Samsung wants people to only download via Kies instead of offering it on their website to reduce the load on their servers and prevent end-users from flashing the wrong ROM because they didn't know what they were doing.
I will update if I have success getting a clean download.
If u are successful in flashing the original rom then notify me too as i dnt know of any such method. Oh by the way here is a site where you can download original roms.

Version ending in LK7 (update from LH2).
I'm going to try to save a copy of the download for backup purposes.

Hello,
I'm using Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8013, UEALI3).
As our hardware and software are almost identical, I'll assume things will be the same for you and me.
How to create a full backup of your device, without touching anything?
There must be a way, but I also couldn't find it.
So, I found a way that just works as we expect.
To create a full stock device backup, with all images and partitions, without rooting, you'll have to....
Flash CWM! No, please, wait, let me finish...
When you flash a custom Recovery, it is actually not something permanent.
Once you boot your stock rom with stock kernel, your custom recovery is overwritten with the default one.
So, you can flash your CWM, and reboot your device immediately to it.
If you let your stock ROM boots, you are going back to stock recovery.
EXCEPTION:
- When you boot to CWM, choose "Reboot", you'll be given the following option: "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. Fix? This can not be undone.". If you choose "Yes", you'll never get to stock again, even while booting stock rom.
So, flashing a custom recovery is actually very similar to "fastboot boot recovery recovery.img", as no permanent damages are made.
Finally, that's what you'll have to do:
1) Use Oding to Flash CWM. DO NOT Restart your device from ODIN.
2) Force turn off your device (press power button for > 8 seconds)
3) Boot to recovery (power button + volume up)
4) Make a full backup! In this backup, you'll have the CWM recovery.
5) Reboot your device.
6) Boot normally, and copy your backup from SDCard to your computer.
How to restore the stock I just saved?
1) Flash CWM again if needed.
1.1) If you want to get rid of the binary count, you'll have to make CWM permanent.. for a while.
1.2) Boot into CWM, go to Reboot Device, and choose "Yes - Make it permanent".
1.3) Boot your rooted ROM, download and execute TriangleAway.
1.4) Ok, your download count is zero.2) Now, go back to CWM and restore your backup.
3) This time, you have your stock rom + stock kernel, but still have the CWM recovery.
4) Boot your stock rom
5) Now, you have your stock rom + stock kernel + stock recovery.
I know this is not what you REALLY wanted (extract stock images, including stock recovery image), I wanted that to..
But this just works.

It features a long list of ROMs which is frequently updated and you can install ROMs to the SD card or OTA (over the air). If you want to unlock features like premium ROMs, update notifications, and automatic backups, then you’ll need to spring for the premium version."
So now i am trying to figure out what custome themes are and what custom kernels are compared to the Avatar ROM i installed.

Now let me put this simple. The ROM is the operating system of your device (OS). You know what a theme is. Its just changing the way things look can be your icons, interface shade/colour,etc. Its just visuals. And the next is kernel. Kernels are the thing which links your OS and hardware. Literally they are responsible for the way your phone behaves. Custom kernels has tweaks whicj can improve your device's performance, the battery drain, way your processor's I/O works.. It helps you to do things like over clock and under clock,etc. But it is risky as your manufacturer has made a stable kernel for your device and these custom kernels may be unstable. Sure thing you dont want to mess with em unless you know what you are doing. Now as you have choice to do things like changing ROMs and Kernels using Rom manager, i would recommend you to use CWM and flash zip files which has ROMs and Kernels made specifically for your device as this is more safe. But be sure to have a backup as installing something not meant for your device will brick it. Dont worry. Have a backup and also Odin with stock rom incase its really hard bricked. CWM is clockword mod recovery. An advanced recovery which has more options than stock recovery. I guess you already has cwm. Probably it must be what you used to flash the Rom and clear cache. Now to Titanium backup, it backs up the whole phone, so do cwm. As we use CWM for our flashing and other things, cwm backups should be enough unless you got space on your sd to have many backup files. And if your phone is working perfectly right now then its never late to take a cwm backup as if you ever encounter a bootloop while tweaking, you can restore your phone. Sometimes even cwm fails to fix your phone. This is where Odin comes in handy. Odin is a pc software which can be used to flash the stock Rom of your device. You can search and find the Stock Rom for your device and region if you google. You can find how to flash using odin guides out there. Flashing stock rom via odin will remove every traces of ever tweaking your phone which includes rooting, flashing of custom roms and kernels,etc. Your device will be just like when you bought it. This is helpful when you want to take your phone to service centres as rooting and doing other stuffs will void your warranty. Hopes this helps...

I can tho not figure out how to know for sure if i have CWM or not. I have no apps called that.
And how do i do a CWM backup if i can start CWM some other way than using an app icon ?

CWM is a shell and not an app and it cannot be installed on android os so you cant access it through your Rom but you can run it whenever you need it but through stock recovery. CWM comes as a .zip file which should be selected from stock recovery or in other words flash it. It will open cwm recovery. And you can access advanced recovery options which stock recovery doesn support. Well search and download cwm for your device, place it sd card root(not inside any folder), run it using install update option on your stock recovery, it will open cwm which will be in yellow colour themed. Select backup and restore opt in it and select backup. That will take care of taking full backup of your device.

Awesome, this thread have cleared many small things that come as so obvious for those that have done this for some time.
Perfect for me to quick understand what I am reading in threads and other sources.
I have now a CWM backup, Titan Backup and installed Odin and found my stock ROM to use if things goes to ****.

Well.. Thats good to hear. And there was none other than me. And anyway a small precaution, never interrupt while you are flashing through Odin coz it will hard brick your device which is literally R.I.P to your device.
