Captivate doesn't get any signal - Captivate General

Hi Guys, so here's the thing, i just installed a new ICS rom in my Captivate(i897), but apparently it installed a new Radio/Modem, so when i turn it on, there is no signal at all.
Now i suppose that i need to found a Radio/Modem that works in my country, but i've tried a few from here , where it says I897-ICS/CM7-9/MIUI Modems, and there's no solution.
My country uses 850mhz, hope that someone can help me..
By the way, before installing the ICS I made a backup, but when i restore, it doesn't work either, maybe it doesnt back up the Radio/Modem

You're correct about the restore, it doesn't restore a modem. You need to find a default 850 MHz modem on that website and look for a modem that is listed on this list as default 850 MHz band. Hope you get it working!

My question is this.. That list that you give me, they're all for i9000, but my Captivate is i897, is there any difference?

If you're on an ICS or CM7/MIUI ROM then you have to use an I9000 modem for it work...

Ok, i've tried almost all of the 850mhz modems from the list that you gave me, and still nothing.. what else can it be?, i'm using CM9 ICS

What bands do your carrier use, not the country...

850.. BEFORE installing the ROM it was working perfectly.. there is no way to recover the factory Radio/Modem?
This is the ROM that messed up my radio http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362092, now i'm seeing the common issues, and the radio problem is in it. Here is what it says:
Try flashing another modem. If this fails, make sure you have the correct APN settings; and as well that your EFS partition is in working order (check your IMEI number). Big thanks to Oxicottin for the modems!

How do I check that EFS partition?

Back to basics first. Was the USB cable plugged in to power or computer when you flashed?? If so the only cure is a reflash of the ROM.

I don't remember.. probably it was, let suppose it was, so i need to reinstall the rom that inicially screw this up?, and then what?

If the USB was plugged in during initial flash then there's no other option than to reflash the ROM. After that you should be good to go.
Good luck!!

[SOLVED]
I tried reinstalling that ROM, still nothing, now what I did was using Odin and reinstalling a stock rom.., now i have full signal..
Thanks for the help!

Nope, everything seems to be exactly like it was before the issue.
Here's what i've done.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
2. Download the stock rom in the post, and followed the steps to put the phone in download mode.

Type *#*#2263#*#* in the dialer
Select [2] WCDMA Band
Select [5] WCDMA 850
Press menu-back button and insure that there is only a star next to the wcdma menu. You should be okay from here but a reboot would be a good idea.

Btw, flashing a rom plugged in is fine in most cases, I do it all the time. However flashing a modem more specifically, requires you to unplug the USB cable. Unplug to be safe anyways, or make sure you know if the rom is installing new modems with it.

That is the version of cwm I have with Slim 3.4. I have had no problems with data. My only suggestion, if you want to try again, is that you flash base first then, without rebooting, flash essentials. I would also suggest that you have your preferred modem loaded on to your sd so that after you reboot, you can see if your modem will work.
This is an outstanding ROM.

I also have this version, flashed several roms, modems, did the modem dance, and not getting any phone signal, only wifi.
Would it be good to try a USB solution instead of cwmr?

Just to add my "me too" to the discussion. I couldn't get Slim ICS to work for me as a phone - no data, no phone (I couldn't call from my home phone). I flashed a modem I knew worked for Doc's - no change. I checked the APN and activated - no change. I reinput the password in case the APN had it wrong - no change. I reflashed the whole package and tried all these again - no change.
So I reflashed Docs. As soon as the first boot concluded, my phone was telling me I had a missed call (from my home phone). Whatever the issue is for some of us, no one has come up with an answer yet. We just have to stay away from that ROM.

my nexus s refuse to use 3g

hi,
Due to low battery i switched my phone to 2g only mode. Now i tried to return it to 3g preferred mode, and the phone refuse to connect to 3g network...
It is not the first time it happens to me, last time i had to do a factory reset, but i really don't want to do it again.
I tried to enter and exit airplane mode, tried to make the phone use wcdma only (vie *#*#4636#*#*), restart, nothing helps.
I have I9020A, 4.1.1 completely stock and using XXKB3 radio.
Any ideas before I'm doing a factory reset again?
Flash a different radio and then flash back to kb3.

Hi, thx for the answer.
I'm trying to flash a new radio but without success. It just get stuck on the flashing and nothing happens for a long time (it should take no more then few seconds). When i pull out the battery it seems like nothing happened..
Any other suggestions?
That's weird. I've had this problem with kb3 before and solved it by flashing uckj1 or uckf1. I currently use kj1 because kb3 would never switch back to 3g for me and I don't notice that much if a difference in speed, even with capped uploads. Dunno, maybe the file your trying to flash is messed up. Did you get it from the radio thread in development?
Sent from my Nexus S using xda app-developers app
Yes, I tried the files from the developers forum thread. I also tried to flash the kb3 again and got the same error. It's really weird..

By completely stock do you mean you're not rooted? If that's the case, maybe that would explain why the radio won't flash. Also, just a wild attempt, have you tried toggling mobile data? Turn it off then on then switch to wcdma only?
yep, not rooted. it might explain, i'll root it now and try again
and yes, i've tried to play with it. it showed edge signal even when i had set it to WCDMA only. weird.

I'm not sure if rooting will preserve your data though (I know I deleted mine when I rooted) but there might be other methods out there.
Once you root, be sure to install ClockworkMod (download ROM Manager from the Play store and install CWM from the app). Restart to CWM and install the radio zip from sdcard. You might already know this though. lol
Yea i know how to root, did it million times already. It doesn't delete your data, only if it's the first time and you are unlocking the bootloader. btw, I tried to flash the radio via fastboot and not by flashing it from the recovery, do i still need to be rooted for it? I though that i dont have to..

If you're flashing a fastboot image, I don't think you do. Just need an unlocked bootloader. But you should just give the recovery flashing method a try. Who know, it might work.

[Q] No Cell Service on ROMs

After being on the latest ParanoidDragun ROM, I went to JB MIUI, and my cell service worked for a while, then disappeared. Reflashed it, no luck. Went back to Paranoid, no luck. Decided to revert back to an ICS ROM, so I went to HyperNonSense CM9, no luck. I've used 4ext and always deleted data, cache, etc before each ROM. I'm trying to find a radio to flash, but I can't find them. Only how to install them.
Any help would be great. Thanks

Hi,
If it was working perfectly, and then, suddenly stopped,I would suggest asking your carrier for a new sim card.
Check first that the sim card is well seated, and has a good connection(not loose)
Thanks for the response! I checked my SIM, pulled it out and put it back in, and no luck. It happened during the MIUI ROM and won't come back now. I reflashed the latest firmware, which was already on there and it didn't help. It shows my bars, but they're grey, and 3G comes up then goes away.
Cheers

Call your cell phone company. Make sure you don't have an account problem. Even if you didn't do anything wrong, you account can get screwed up. Maybe they didn't post your last payment to the account and they have you listed as being unpaid. Maybe your SIM got deleted on the carrier's end (that actually happened to me once) 100 things could be screwed up by the carrier that they can diagnose and figure out quickly.
And if it's not their issue, at least you've ruled that out.
Once I flashed a rom and used there "recommended" radio and lost all service on everything. I did however fix it. Here's what I did. I went to the generic ics radio and ril files and flashed a new radio and ril. Then my cell service came back up! You flash the radio file by placing the pg58img file on root of SD card. Pull battery place battery back in, press volume down and power at the same time. It will reconize the file and ask to upgrade press power for yes then it will upgrade, then delete the pg 58img file or it will continue to update in boot loader then you flash the ril as you would flash a rom. Then check your radio hopefully After upgrading both radio and ril file it will work. It worked for me. I'm hopeful this will help your situation. I know it fixed my issue.best wishes. Hope this helps! Sometimes you may have to experiment with a few different radio and ril combinations to see which works best for your area. I got lucky the first radio and ril I tried worked for me but it could take a couple of tries to find the best one for your area. I really hope this helps. Best wishes
I am assuming your s off if your s on this won't work. I don't think.

Here is the link to the radios and rils. Make sure you use the ics radio and rils. Scroll down and you will find the downloads. Also on this link it tells you how to install them if your questioning that. I installed mine the way I told you in above post. You must be s off in order to install I believe. If your s off it should install just fine for you. Make sure to install both radio and ril. File. Hopefully this will help you. I know it solved my data issue when I lost my data. Best of luck to you. Let us know how this worked for you. Remember sometimes you need to try out a couple before you find the best one for your area. Hope this helps you out.

Everything about this post was correct and is great advice, but just to clarify that since you are using AOSP roms (CM9, MIUI) you shouldn't have to pull the battery to get into the bootloader. Pulling the battery is done to negate the Fastboot set up found in some ROMs that will skip the bootloader search when powering on.
On CM9/10 or MIUI you shoudln't have to pull the battery. Just power off then power+volume down.
Additionally, when the rom is running just hold the power button down until the power menu pops up. Hit reboot and it should give you the advanced power menu which lets you reboot directly into the bootloader. Most custom Sense ROMs have that option as well. Stock ROMs do not.
However, usually when you have the wrong radio / ril combo you will still get SOME signal, even if it's not usable. (I said usually. Not always.) And if you haven't changed the radio since it was working previously it may not be the issue. Can't hurt to change it to find out though. But if that doesn't work, call the phone company. Make sure your account is good.
have you just changed to MIUI?
Have you checked that you have the correct Radio / RIL combination.

[Q] [SOLVED] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.

This happens every time I flash a JB ROM.
Everything else seems to work fine.
But...
As soon as I disable wifi, my mobile data greys out and I have no internet connection. If I re-enable wifi, my mobile data comes back.
If I am out of wifi range, mobile data greys out and no internet connection.
When mobile data works....it works.
Looking at my APN settings shows no APN's at all. It will let me populate a new APN, but when I press "save" it just goes away and leaves nothing. I've tried rebooting after also.
My IMEI information shows up in the settings screen. Not jibberish.
Flashing back to stock restores my mobile data fine.
Mobile data works fine when I upgrade to ICS from GB before attempting JB.
The phone reacts to flashing exactly as the instructions indicate.
This has happened every time I try to go from ICS to JB.
I tried completely wiping (int sd and all)my phone before flashing (over and over again) and I'm following andros instructions fully.
While on JB, could using Odin to restore an efs backup I made while on GB help this? Is it possible to just upload the backup without returning to stock? I tried to restore the efs backup with Root Explorer but it didn't fix anything obviously. And I can't seem to even connect fully using EFS Pro (won't see com ports on the Qualcomm screen). Nitrality is an app that claims to backup/restore the efs folder but I haven't tried restoring one yet.
I'm not even sure the problem lies within the efs folder.
Ive gone through this a million times and it is the same no matter what I do or "try". It is the same for me with any JB ROM.
Searching the forum has gotten me this far, but now I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I refuse to accept failure.

6. then flash 4.2.1 build

I first re-downloaded all my ROM's and GAPPs on the computer.
I've been able to keep mobile data all the way to 4.1.2.(Paranoid) But after that it's as I described:
IMEI shows up and is correct.
No APN's listed and can't save a new APN.
"Mobile Data Status" shows disconnected.
If wifi is on and connected, mobile data "works" fine, but still shows no APN's and disconnected in settings as above.
Resetting to default APN says it completed, but nothing's there. I tried rebooting after and checking.
Wanna hear something really strange...
Since I knew I was going to have to go back to stock once again, I decided to step back to 4.1.2 just to see what would happen.
4.1.2 installed fine and my mobile data was once again working correctly.
Still working on it.

Thanks but nope.
This happens every time even when starting fresh from stock.
I am not altering the ROM itself before flashing in any way.
Immediately after flashing a 4.2.+ from 4.1.2 the APN's are not appearing. But my IMEI info is.
But if I go back to 4.1, the APN's are there so I'm thinking the APN's aren't being deleted during the flash?
In the process of flashing, I've made sure all the ROM's "worked" and the APN's were there before stepping to the next one.
I feel like I'm insane.
Re: [Q] Loose mobile data and APN's after any/every JB flash.
Can anyone tell me what controls the migration of the APN info when flashing from 4.1 to 4.2?
Also, what controls the addition of new APN's and where are they saved?
Is there any place I can look within the ROM or kernel to help see if the APN info is really missing.
Personally, I think the APN info is there, but something is not installing completely when flashing.

I had to flash a different modem. Not sure why, but it fixed my problem. What I did was:
1. Downloaded a few different modems from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31097259
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Select to Install zip from SD card.
4. Locate one of the modem. (In the folder).
5. Flash the modem.
6. Clear cache and dalvik cache.
7. I selected to fix permissions. Probably don't have to do this. But I did.
8. Reboot and test. If it doesn't work, flash another modem and try again.
If no modem works, then its probably not the modem. Hopefully you removed the SD card when flashing from ICS to JB. And hopefully your IMEI # is showing and correct.
It goes quick. I hope this works for you. If you need more detailed instructions, just let me know.

i727 No Mobile Data

Hi,
I don't own this device, but a colleague who does asked for my help. We're in Africa(Ghana to be precise), and he got his i727 from a pal just in from the US. It was used when he got it, unlocked in the US and apparently he'd used it in the US to be sure it was working fine. However in Ghana it has never successfully connected to mobile data. All it does is calls/sms and Wifi. When he handed it to me it was on stock ICS, so I updated to stock JB via Kies hoping it'd make a difference but no luck. Absolutely no data connection and it has been tried on the 2 most prominent networks here with APN settings correctly set. I'm stumped, anyone have a different idea?
PS: 3G in Ghana is on UMTS 2100Mhz which is apparently supported on the phone
Baseband version:UCMC1
Any ideas at all would be great guys.. I read some posts about 3G data not working outside the US unless it's an AT&T sim, but others said they never had problems using it on 3G networks in Europe and Taiwan.

1)factory reset/wipe cache since he's not rooted and I wanted to fix this without rooting if possible
2)I tried the short code *#*#4636#*#*, it doesn't help much except showing that there's no connection to the data network. Selecting different preferred network types doesn't change anything. Any else I should do here?
3)Flashing different radios, I'm going to do this next, I'll flash the JB Rogers radio since I was saw it's RAT unlocked, not sure if that would make a difference but perhaps there's a service mode option which will do the trick. At the moment I've upgraded from stock ICS ROM/radio to the JB one and the data issue isn't fixed. Phone won't be used on AT&T anymore so doesn't matter.
APN's are correct, been rechecked lots of times
