[Q] Roms and battery life - Unable to start phone - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have recently tried out a few ROMs with my Nexus S to try to get better battery life. I tried CodeName Android and then figured I would try Slim ICS afterwards. I completely wiped everything and installed Slim ICS.
I have observed the following:
- Battery was ~40% when I installed Slim ICS
- I used it until the battery depleted
- Plugged phone into the wall charger
- Started the phone shortly afterwards (~25 minutes) and it says battery is 100% and then the phone randomly shut off
- Phone has been plugged into the wall charger and when I try to start it now sometimes it boots completely and then shuts off. Other times it just shuts off before it finishes booting up. The few times it does fully boot up, it says the battery is 100%
I've read through many postings about calibration but at this point I am not even able to fully turn on the phone even when its plugged into the wall.
Is this expected or is something else going on? I've never seen anything like this when I had the stock ICS. Why would erroneously report 100% but then not even let me fully turn on the phone? Thanks!

Maybe a bad battery?

Battery is fine. I ended up letting it charge a few hours and it now fully boots up and battery is almost fully charged now.
Whats strange is at times, when the battery was close to empty, when turned off and plugged into the wall, it showed the battery as being completely charged so I don't think it was charging. I had never observed this behavior with the stock ICS.

If it happens again I would suggest taking it to a sprint repair

same problem
Even I have faced the same problem whenever I reboot keeping my pfone charging,
This is very normal,
just let the battery drain completely and next time charge it till 100% it will work perfectly,
It happens with me whenever I install new rom.
basically the battery indicator shows incorrect status also battery will drain very quickly later but once you finish installation just let your phone charge for 3 hours . Problem will get solved

Also, you could try clearing the battery stats in clockwork mod recovery

Thanks. So it sounds like its more of a generic issue with ROMS in general as I never observed this before putting on a custom ROM.

[Q] Power Issue.. Please Help!

Hi all,
There's this problem with my phone that everytime I charge it, it takes an elongated time to do so. This issue first emerged when I was on stock GB after a minor OTA update which added the power saver toggle to the quick settings menu..The problem is that it takes about 4-5 hours to fully charge the phone, and if I rebooted in the middle of charging when it's about 70% or 80%, it suddenly shows that the phone is fully charged, and the indicator becomes green! But afterwards the battery drains as quickly!
Now I have S-Off and using ARHD 6.6.3 ROM, but it seems the problem persists ..I wiped battery stats as soon as I flashed the ROM as well..Although it's not a problem I cannot live with, it's annoying enough when it happens.
Can someone please help me? And suggest me what to do?

its common thing...the battery calibration is not proper that's all...
also you need to wipe stats once you charge your phone to 100%
then battery will try to calibrate ...and after 3-4 full complete cycles (100-0 and 0-100)
the battery will settle..
the battery drain will be there ...whenever you flash a rom or flash a kernel....battery only settles atleast after 2 full cycles
EDIT: also download currentwidget from market..as the name says its a widget..so you will see it in widgets once you installed it...this will give you more proper reading of battery...when you plug your phone to charge...and when current widget reads 0mah then your battery is charged completely...(it might take a long time to read 0mah...but charge it until you see 0mah)..then wipe the battery stats...so after this battery calibration will be proper
Also the sudden jump of battery percentage is due to improper battery calibration
so dont worry you got no problem
So
I read somewhere that you are not supposed to let the phone go to zero because it could cause your phone to not power back on anymore..is this fact. I couldn't find where I read it to back and read again. Mine has been doing some weird things as well...the led turns green before it is 100% and it goes from 100% and drops to like 89% out of no where.

when i meant 100%-0% means until your phone turns off due to less power..it might not(or won't be) be 0% then
as i told you that kind of jumps are common ...in my case it went to 60% to 100% when i rebooted ...also the dropping used to be in large scale too

[Q] Battery issues

My battery has started acting strangely for quite a while now. Essentially what happens is that when I try to charge it, it usually jumps straight from around 50% to 100%. Then, when I unplug it, it will act as if it is discharging normally for around 5%, then it'll jump down to around 45% and discharge normally. And it doesn't happen consistently, once in a while it will charge properly. It happens whether I am using a wall, car, or USB charger. I believe it started when I installed a nightly of CM 7.2 a while back, but it's still happening to me in SBF'd 608, and it could have started when I was still on CM 7.1. I downloaded a battery calibration app, and tried that several times, but it didn't help. Does anyone have any advice?
buy a $5 spare battery charger from amazon or ebay http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B006EB6LSY/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/175-4779849-7188200
and/or new battery http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-DROID-1300mah-Standard-Battery/dp/B002ZG8BQM/ref=pd_bxgy_cps_text_b
battery is bad, or phone isn't charging correctly

That will fix the symptoms, but I was hoping to figure out how to actually fix it. The battery charges perfectly fine in another D2G, and it charged fine in mine on 608 last night, so it's not the battery. It looks to me like a software issue. I'm going to see if it keeps doing alright on stock, and if it does, I guess I can assume it's a Cyanogen issue. Or an issue with my install of Cyanogen, anyways.
Use another d2g to charge the battery to 100%, then put the battery into your d2g, start up the phone, plug in the charger for about 15 minutes, delete /data/battd and /data/system/batterystats.bin, power off the phone without unplug the charge, after the phone finished power off, unplug the charger.start up the phone and use it normally to it automatically power off, fully charge the battery without start up

I've been having issues too with my droid 2's battery lately, not the same exact issue you are having, but it's like when I plug it to the wall to charge, sometimes (randomly and not often) it won't recognize my battery and won't start charging and a '?' icon will appear on the battery (if the phone is turned off). I've been reading about this and people say that if you 'calibrate' your battery, the problem will be gone, so check in the Google Store for a battery calibration app and follow the steps. Good luck on it !

[Q] Battery Won't Charge Beyond 76%

Hey guys, I've got a bit of an issue with charging. I'm running Cataclysm ROM with FK r35 kernel with minor downgrading setups that worked perfectly well for me. So yesterday I left my phone on charge over night and woke up to find the charge stuck at 74~76percent and phone was at room temperature. Charger was plugged and in the About section it says AC charging. So I figured maybe its the kernel so I switched it off and kept it charging, but its still stops going above. When using the phone the battery charge reduces normally. Any suggestions? I thought maybe the battery's internal cycle is not in sync but there's no option to reset it.
Edit: atm I'm trying to completely drain the battery and let it charge again. Hope that will solve it.
Try a battery calibration app.

yeah, let it drain down the power it off and back on.
when you say you switched off the kernel, i'm assuming you mean you either flashed the stock kernel back or dirty flashed the rom.

i would do this as well. let it drain far enough to where android shuts it off, and then boot the device up into bootloader and/or recovery. keep it on here until the device truly hits 0%(android shuts it down at 1% i believe). then plug it in and let it charge up completely

Sorry I wrote it wrong. I meant I switched off the phone and tried charging it. ATM ive turned it on and its been charging for the past 1.5hours and its still on 16percent. Its charging extremely slow and in System Monitor app it shows that charging will complete in 3hrs39min...btw I'm using the stock charger and cable that came with it.

Had the same issue, too.
Phone went off, mostly when trying to wake or unlock.
happened with sense and aosp roms.
Turned out that the battery behaved weird (also using Anker).
Just changing battery (still have stock one) seemed to solve the issue.
What I did was as follows:
- boot into bootloader and let the phone untouched until it shuts down due to low battery
- charge battery while phone is off till led is green + 1hour
- unplug, boot and after it has booted switch off phone again
- charge battery for another hour
Currently no issues with my Anker battery

keep a piece of business card (I kept a panadol strip) between the top of the battery housing and the battery.
SIMPLE AS THAT

Battery/Phone Shutting Down

Recently had to replace battery.
Phone was shutting almost immediately after it was disconnected from charger. Charging status when not switched on showed the battery kinda going in reverse. Phone was really odd as it would suggest the battery had 100% charge and then within minutes of disconnecting it was shutting down.
I tried a factory reset/refresh with no change. So I ordered a Genuine replacement battery off flea bay and installed that last Thursday.
Initially phone seemed ok, then wen a bit weird and shut down even though charge was like at 70% or so. Wouldn't restart until plugged in and then in shutdown mode the battery/charging indicator would show 0% and then very quickly showed 70%. Good bit though was it was going up and not down like before.
Fully charged phone overnight. It then seemed really good and lasted until Tuesday with 66% charge still showing. I had not installed FB or Twitter which made a huge difference. Then yesterday it just shutdown again. When plugged in showed 0%, within minutes back to 70% and then charged to 100% in the space of an hour or so.
So I am looking for any advice. Is this just calibration issues that the phone needs to get past. Is it possible the phone has corruption int he ROM.
I appreciate it might be a hardware fault but seems weird that the replacement battery is clearly showing a big improvement suggesting battery was EOL after 2 years use.
TIA

Same problem here i will try to install the oficial rom of xt890 if works i back here if not i don't know what to do
Sooo............issue is still present. Odd thing which I am unable to confirm, due to rnadomness of shutdowns, it that I think it is slowly learning the state of the battery as it originally was shutting down at 70% after 2-3 days on standby. then 66% hen 56%. I did a clear cache partition and a fresh install but still the issue was present.
Clearly the new battery is lasting longer than the old one, just the phone does not seem to know to reduce the charge indicator all the way to 0%.
Anyone any idea why this might be happening.
TIA
G
Just to add i'm having the same problem.
Symptoms started last week running the stock kitkat rom so i ordered and a fitted a new battery. Initially everything looked good phone said 100% left it over night and noticed it had shut off when i came back to it. Plugged it in to the charger and it said 0% so i charged back to 100%, booted up android and almost immediately it begins discharging rapidly, i would say within 15 minutes its back down to 0%.. I've done this a few times now even left it on charge overnight for 8 hours but its still discharging rapidly everytime. The craziest thing is even if it says 0% in android i can still boot in to recovery and flash away so clearly there is charge in the battery its just android thats out of sync.
What i've tried so far:
Different wall chargers/USB leads/Outlets
Wiped everything in TWRP and flashed CM11
Factory Reset several times
Various battery calibration apps
My next step is going to be trying RSD to flash the stock ROM but beyond that i dont know what to do.
I'm experiencing EXACTLY THE SAME ISSUE with my Razr i, replaced the battery and it's still discharging very fast
Eventually managed to resolve my new battery issue simply by fully charging and discharging several times. It started to hold charge after the 7th charge and after several more discharges it's now up to full capacity.
