[Q] Advice Wanted -- New phone - General Questions and Answers

So, I'm going to get work to buy me a new phone. Its all pretty much open as to what I want. I would appreciate any advice that you give based on my needs and wants.
Needs -- not optional... because otherwise it would not be a need....
1. International capable. I travel occasionally and don't want to have to fool around with crappy rental phones.
2. ATT or VZW-- We can buy Sprint or TMO as well, but their reception is terrible at my house.
3. Android -- Everyone else in my group supports IOS or BB, I've got Android.
Thats it for what I really need.
Wants --
1. Android 4.0 capable, either natively from carrier, or better, a great image from here.
2. Biggest screen possible.
3. Removable battery, because sometime you can't wait for the battery to drain
4. Removeable storage, because why do want static?
5. HDMI out... why not, hotel TVs have HDMI input, may as well use it. Put the removable SD card in and watch Game of Thrones.
Afterthought..
After reading a thread on the E71, makes me wonder if ATT would be a better choice as I could switch my SIM to that when I want a long lasting phone.

I'd say your best of with the Galaxy S II or HTC Vivid.
Unless you want to wait for the Galaxy S III but not sure about US release dates.
Since you travel I think you'd be better off with AT&T since they're a GSM carrier so you can use the E71 and stick a local SIM in it when you go abroad.

I love much galaxy S2 I had a infuse before which was bad azz to but this one is faster and not much smaller I really want the s3 but I am happy with my S2 would suggest it to anybody

Well then its simple. Galaxy Note of course of course!
It also fits the rest of your desires, including being on ATT. You can pick up a bunch of batteries on ebay for less than $10 each (they aren't great but work in a pinch).

I'd recommend a galaxy nexus. Running mine in full screen mode and, while not quite as large as the note screen, it is the largest screen you can operate with one hand (unless you're King Kong). Had fantastic luck with it so far, works international, can use a straight talk att Sim card (cheap plan).
+1 for galaxy nexus.

That's a good point, and I do love the GSM Nexus, plus its slightly cheaper unlocked. I have slightly larger than average hands, so if your worried about it being too large I recommend trying on at an AT&T store (although I like the international one better, they are the same size). I can mostly use it one handed though, because how often do you have to reach to the top of the screen?

Would really recommend the Galaxy S2, with the right rom/kernel combination it's just insane. However I would also look at the Galaxy Note if you want more screen real estate.

Thanks for the input so far all. I like the Note, just not sure of how it will fit in my pockets. Guess I will make a visit to the ATT store and see what they have around and see if our rep knows a release date on the S3.

Galaxy nexus runs 4.0.2 atm and to he honest its one of the best phones I've ever had, super easy to root, fast and reliable

Info..Nexus S or SGII

Hello all, I am heavily think about paying my ETF from AT&T and moving to Sprint. I can get 4 smart phones for the same price plan as I have at AT&T with just 2 smart phones and 2 regular phones.
On that note, I am looking at either the Nexus S or the SGII.. What are you opinions? I am leaning more towards Nexus S since it is a TRUE Google phone, no bloatware from Samsung or Touchwiz. But the downfall I feel is no SD card.
Please let a future Sprint customer know your opinion.
Thanks
It really depends on what you want to use your phone for.
An external SD card could be useful if you want a lot of media, and the dual core CPU and 1GB of RAM on the S2 will certainly help with gaming and flash heavy websites. However, as you state, the Touchwiz UI is certainly a bit crappy, and having used my friend's Samsung handsets I much prefer my Nexus S.
While the Nexus S doesn't have an SD card, it certainly has a good sized amount of storage (iPhone users all seem to manage fine with 16GB) and it is much zippier without bloat ware or extras. You're also going to get better support in terms of updates, and if you're a dev or a modder you're going to have a much easier experience with the Nexus S.
At the end of the day, I'd say go for the Nexus S if you want to mod, learn how Android works or stay at the cutting edge of Android. The 1GHz Hummingbird may not be dual core but it's still a damn fast chip and will get quick updates for a long time to come yet.
If you'd rather play lots of games, take HD video and use the phone for media then go for the S2.
Hope this helps
^^^
What he said best bet is go into a sprint store and play with both handsets and see what u like more. J wanted a gs2 but I heard that phone was having signal issues. I don't know if they got resolved but I couldn't be more happier with my nexus s 4g. I just wish sprint hurry up and fix there network.

So has the Nexus S received its official ICS update? I dont really use my phone much anymore to watch stuff off the internet since I got my Transformer. I play my games and watch movies off it. But I do surf the net, and would be using the Sprint TV option, you know the average user stuff.
I do root all my devices, I love custom roms and the ability to get free wifi tether, etc...
Damn, I wrote a whole page and it didn't post! I have both phones so I will give a quick summary...development and timely updates- Nexus. If battery and over the top performance are most important then ET4G. The LOS (loss of signal) issue was cleared up with an OTA update

Go on samsung S II and you will not regret ! ( Nexus S is limitted now 512RAM, No micro SDcard, only one 1GHz proc....) I have both devices but you can't compare SII with NS ( SII is faster than many tablets, has a magnificent display, and many other benefits ) ! Good luck in your choice !
Get the gs2.
I own a ns4g and my wife has the epic touch gs2. No matter what you read, or hear touch wiz getting slammed...the gs2 smokes my ns4g in every respect. Its a large phone but other than that it blisters my ns4g and has better battery life. Both phones are stock.
What they all said .. SGSII. Once rooted, bloatwares/junkwares are no longer a problem as you would flash custom ROM anyway (I know I would). The SGSII's hardwares just blow the NS out of the water.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
How does the Nexus S manage in gaming? I don't play the latest games, but maybye some Angry Birds, Guns n' Glory or Toki Tori. Mostly i'm texting and using android apps. Can I buy the Nexus S, or should I buy the SGS2?
That's like buying a mustang gt or springing for the cobra. If u can afford it, the bigger IS better
I have an NS4G but would love to have an S2. I like the larger screen (my previous phone was an Evo, and it fit my hand perfectly) and more robust hardware.
Throw an aosp rom into the S2 and you have the best of both worlds.
My only gripe with Samsung is how they didn't include the Wolfson WM8994 and cheaped out by using a Yamaha DAC, otherwise I'd probably be all over one of the variants. If you're someone who wants to use their phone as their primary portable audio player, and care about sound quality a lot, there's a huge selling point for the Nexus S, as well as the original Galaxy S phones.
Otherwise, the SGS2 is better in pretty much every respect. Not a fan of TouchWiz though, but there would likely be a TouchWiz free ROM shortly after ICS is released for it.
If you do not have enough money to afford an SII, then go on Nexus S , still good and you can play games without problems

help choosing a new device

hey guys, finally dropping Sprint and switching to a GSM carrier looking to go unlocked and prepaid and i have it narrowed down to three devices
1. HTC One X (international version)
2. Galaxy S3 (international version)
3 GSM Galaxy Nexus
If anyone can give me pros and cons to any or all, it is greatly appreciated. also if there is a device around the corner worth waiting for please let me know, Thanks for any help given
-Matt McKay
Edit: going to use it on T-mobiles monthly 4g plan for 30$ so itd be nice if it works on their HSPA+ network
I'd have to go with the galaxy 3 as well. I went and checked out the HTC one today and was kind of disappointed when I was told that you couldn't change the msd card or anything :'( but I like the slimness of it. I would pick the s3 just because it's like a thinner version of the s2 but with a couple of new perks. Hope this helps.

In my opinion is Galaxy S3
I have looked at the SG3 several times as i wanted to get a phone for my wife as a present.. she is a tech geek too, so the lack of an SD card is a factor.
And while it is subjective....for being an expensive phone, the SG3 just feels like a toy. Especially compared to the One-X. Maybe it's my opinion in the past over Samsung manufacturing standards on other phones affecting which it's affecting my view on this one, but I can't get past it. The one-X has a comfortable weight...it feels as if if it's construction was thoroughly designed and planned to every detail. Not the SG3 though. I am not saying it's not a study phone, it probably is, it's just feels tacky.
I guess if I am going to pay $600 for a phone, at minimum, I want it to feel like it.
Oh yeah...say all you want about resolution or screen quality, but the One-X screen leaves the SG3 miles behind.

Thank you to all for your help thus far, am currently leaning towards HTC One X merely because of htc build quality (currently on an OG EVO 4G) and the fact that i kind of drool over the design, even if i am limited to edge on tmobile with it. Are there any major cons to the HTC? Non removeable battery and no sd card i already know of, anything major?

From what I've read about the HTC, the only drawbacks are the sd and battery. Other than that I hear it's amazing. Of course I only know what I've read about and don't actually own the phone. If you can deal with the sd and battery deal, then I would say go with the 'one'. (see what I did there? Fancy word play on my part)

S3 Hands down as it has the removable battery and sd card slot. battery is an improvement over nexus and s2
I personally would go with the Nexus (my current phone). If it were between the S3 and the One X, I would go with the HTC. Touchwiz is disgusting and that whole nature theme is a joke. Samsung didn't fail with this phone...but it could be much better.
I'd say go with the HTC One X. Going pretty cheap sim free now and it works out much cheaper overall if you buy a sim only contract.

galaxy s3 for sure bro!

I would go with S3 for now, but if you can wait maybe a Galaxy Note 2
I wouls say too SG3 but even its a 2.5 SG2 to my view ...

Nexus, Note or S3, Just Can't Decide. Help Me Decide.

Help, my phones up for renewal now and for once I'm not running out to upgrade. I'm on SGS2 at the moment from a HTC Sensation XE from a Nexus 1 and I just can't make my mind up.
The HTC One X doesn't appeal because I use my phone a lot and do a lot of traveling on business which means I generally have to buy a Mugen battery. I also have an expensive 32gb SD that I'm not ready to throw in a drawer just yet.
The Nexus I I had was the most fun for flashing ROM's and that is essential, but the Galaxy Nexus feels like a bit of a step down from this phone and the previous and I want a big screen as I use it for office and email a lot.
A real head wrecker.
Helpppppp!

Between the Nexus and the S3, the S3 is a better device (best processor, screen, overall experience). You might end up waiting a bit longer for official Jellybean or other future updates but that's a compromise I'd be willing to make. If you really want the precision note taking ability the Note is probably the best choice.
Yeah, that's pretty much my thinking too. My heart says go with the Nexus but my head says go with the S3. The Nexus would probably annoy me because I'd root it within minutes and put Jellybean on then get fed up at no Flash support, and the Galaxy will frustrate me by not having stable CM9 due to all the new hardware....and the Note is just a fat S2. Grrr, why don't Google time their Nexus releases with my phone contracts.

Flash works just fine on my Gnex running jellybean.
get a S3, it may look horrible but its worth the while,
its like chuck norris
Buy an off contract Nexus test it out and if you like it when the new Nexus phones are released use your contract renewal to get that .You don't have to use it right away
i think the Note 2 is coming out soon, but I wouldn't recommend it anyways
Hmm, I can see it isn't just me that would struggle with this decision. I think its a toss up between the S3 and the Nexus, but searching the internet has given me a headache as I believe the One X is actually excellent in battery, and Sense 4 is good because I had it on my Sensation. The Note 2 is intriguing too, if its the same spec as the S3, but I could be waiting ages for it to hit the UK vodafone shops (when is it due for release anyway?).
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
I also what to buy a new phone, and I'm thinking about waiting for the Note 2 because I love that huge screen, but don't want to buy an "old" phone.
Also, the Note 2 should have a slightly bigger screen with an higher resolution.
Shortcomings
When I am in this situation I always ask for the weak points of each phone. A chain is as strong as its weakest link, so that is what one has to look for.
The Galaxy Nexus has no SD card slot, yet only 16 GB of built-in memory. That is an incredibly stupid design decision, in my view. The thing cannot hold a candle to my old Nexus One with 32 GB.
Other phones have a battery you cannot swap. That is even more stupid, as the battery may only live for a year under heavy use, and I always carry a spare, in case the one in my phone runs dry, which it regularly does when I travel or move around a lot on foot and cannot recharge. Hence these phones are just as useless.
Unfortunately some idiot designers come up with ever more ideas to render a phone worthless, so you have to be very wary. Articles with news about phones are useless too, because they concentrate on the strong points of each phone and neglect its flaws. The journalists write worthless stuff and leave out the useful information.
Can anybody think about other value-subtracting features of new phones? GPS flaws seem to be widespread, as are design decisions that turn a mobile phone into a regional phone that fails when you travel.
Which is the company that makes fewer mistakes than the others?
I'd personally recommend the nexus because you always get first updates
Everyday use + modding = Galaxy Nexus
Everyday use + media (storage and screen) + gaming + modding = Galaxy S3
Everyday use + media + modding + gaming + really big screen = Galaxy Note
In terms of power: Galaxy S3 > Galaxy Note > Galaxy Nexus
The Nexus gets updates first, but the international S3 (and Note) will get updates quickly as well. Just don't get the carrier variants.
I think s3 is your choise and the batery of this phone is much better than any other smartphone, and for the other spec.of this phone i have no words.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I'd say S3. I own the i9300 (international) and it's great!
Thanks guys, that really is useful. I think on balance it has to be the S3 then. Didn't realise that the Galaxy Nexus didn't have an SD slot, madness, that rules it out with the One X.
The note would be nice but the old one is just a fat S2, and I have a thin S2 and a TF101, so it's not worth wasting an upgrade on that. I will ask Vodafone when the new note is coming, but failing that, I'm going to have to plump for the S3. Does it have a fixed battery though, because that would be a deal breaker really considering all the travel I do. I often munch through a full Mugen battery let alone the stock ones.

Your opinion on the S3

Hello all,
I currently have a HTC Thunderbolt on an unlimited data plan with Verizon. My phone is getting old, and is having a few problems. The screen has a few scratches on it, the battery life is poor, and I'm noticing that the speed isn't what I used to think it was. Consequently, I am thinking of purchasing a new phone and have given the Samsung Galaxy SIII some thought. I was wondering what you all thought about your phone and if there was anything you specifically disliked about it. I have been weighing my options, but have not made up my mind. Also, are there any other phones that you would suggest for me to investigate?
Thanks!
It's a good phone but I myself and my wife's phone suffer from poor signal reception and poor wifi signal. Not everyone experiences poor signal from what I've read on here and people I have talked to. Personally I'm about to leave Verizon or get another phone that's how bad the s3 signal reception is for me I can't speak for everyone else. If I can't make or receive phone calls or use my data, when where I had my HTC and Motorola devices i would have 2 to 3 bars more signal. I know a lot of people will come in and say that I'm full of crap but I'm just telling you my personal experience
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
nothing but good things to say here. people complain about the reception, but i nor anyone else i know in person has these issues. ive the same or better service with the S3 versus my MOTO and brothers HTC phone.
does verizon still do 14 day test drives on phones? can see if it effects you or not.
I'm not sure if they do or not. I'm actually on my friend's plan (he added a line to his plan that I pay for) so that I could get the unlimited data option. So, I have to actually find out if I can "upgrade" or not. I was kind of planning on just buying the phone on ebay and then setting it up to use it on the account/network. Can I ask where you guys are located that you are or are not receiving signal?
GS3 on Verizon is a great phone. No signal or wireless radio issues for me. It's a little better than my previous Razr Maxx radio which surprised me.
It's still a beast phone though it's dual core. Don't get too caught up in how many cores the phone has. I've played with both the DNA & Note 2 and I saw tiny bit of lag. Wouldn't think I did with quad core processors and project butter Jelly Bean. I feel it's fluidity, speed, functionality is more about how the software is optimized with the hard ware that's running it.
If the Note 2 isn't too big for your liking, I'd get that but the S3 is still a boss. I think some people who have radio problems may be having defected hardware or something where they live is blocking or affecting the phone's signal.
I'm leaning more towards they received a GS3 with bad hardware, antenna, something of that nature. Samsung has been known to make crappy wireless radios on a couple phones like the Epic Touch (GS2) and I heard Galaxy Nexus had a bad one too.
I don't think the S3 has a bad one though? I good great service on mines. Maybe I live near good towers? But then again even when I go places and I'm not home I get good reception. But like I said maybe Samsung did produce some with poor or defected radios?

The Galaxy Nexus had a terrible 4G radio in the ones I owned, so I can attest to that. GS3 though has been great reception-wise, so it sounds like the reception issues others have seen is most likely hardware-related.
I have a GS3 for work and I really enjoy it. I'd say go for it.
Go with the GS3 dude! U won't regret it. I heard the DNA was locked down so I'd either go with the GS3 or Note 2. If you want something managable when in comes to phisical size, I have the GS3 with an otterbox commuter case and it fits nicely in my pocket and I can easily navigate with one hand, the Note 2 may be a bit more difficult

I'm coming from a droid x & my GS3 is light years ahead of it!! No reception problems or anything bad to report at all. This baby only has a dual core processor but yet it smokes my Transformer Prime that had a quad processor! So yea cores mean nothing in most cases..found that out the hard way lol. As far as the DNA goes I hear the screen is nice but I also read on another site that the Samsung Galaxy 4 will supposedly be out Feb 2013.. Rocking a 13mp camera,1080p screen & a quad core processor. I was originally going for the note 2 but I'm absolutely loving the GS3...& I'm not even rooted yet lol.
I saw a DNA today at the verizon store. Not really impressed. S4 is going to blown it out the water.

The only issue I have had with the S3 was it would take forever to refresh my widgets when I restarted the phone. After spending some quality time with a Verizon tech who was actually very knowledgeable and helpful, we figured out setting Power Saving to "off" solved the problem. I am now using Clean Rom 4.5 (soon to be 5.0) and I can set Power Saving to "on" without a problem if I want. Weird.
My daughter is having issues with her current phone on Verizon and spoke to a couple Verizon staff on what they would recommend for a reliable phone. They all said Galaxy S3 was their top recommendation. Since they knew they weren't selling her a phone (they told her she should go through support and get a new phone for free given her continuing issues) I think they were being very honest with her.
I'm gonna laugh so hard if the S4 has no SD slot and a non removable battery. I can see them going that route to make the phone thinner and more durable

I came from the Galaxy Nexus and the only issue I had wiht that is battery life which was managable but don't expect to go more than 8-10 hours with it. Even still it was worth it to have a pure google phone. I got the SGS3 only because I got a killer deal on it off contract. So I'm rocking that now. If anything I would say go this way:
Galaxy Nexus (Cheap and Pure Google Experience with Roms)
Galaxy S3 (Great Battery Life all around great phone)
Galaxy Note 2 (If you don't mind the screen and want Quad Core)
Wait for Galaxy S 4 which should be out sometime next year if you can wait.
I haven't had poor reception with my GNex or my S3 so all is good there. Depending on how much money you have either of the above will be great phones.

If they don't then I won't be upset
If they want to make the phone thinner, however, those 2 options are things that would help big time.
If they do get rid of the SD slot, they should be smart enough to offer high internal storage, but you know that Verizon will try and stop them.
Verizon is most likely the reason the DNA doesn't have an SD slot, they want people to use more data to stream and download

Honestly this will probably be my last Samsung product.
The amount of bugs on this phone is inexcusable. On stock ICS TW:
- Can't use aux input with Bluetooth calls. This means if I was listening to music in my car through aux input and I got a Bluetooth call, I'd have to yank out the audio cord in order to hear the caller. Seriously, what the hell. I had this functionality working perfectly on a two year old phone.
- Google Music oddities. Sometimes when changing tracks the music stops playing. Turning on the screen resumes playing though. On the JB leaks this bug manifests in an even worse way and I have my doubts that it will be fixed for OTA.
And this isn't really a bug, but there's no way to disable the volume reduction upon plugging in an aux cable and that makes me sad.
So the answer lies in AOSP... thank god for our African Canadian sock monkey friend for leaking our unlocked bootloader... only...
- IMEI loss. Seriously Samsung? This is a huge oversight and is NOT the first time a bug like this has escaped their QA testing. Samsung products have been riddled with stories of bricks and poor code management across many of their devices, as one CM dev recently talked about.
- Real Time clock is oh-so-wrong. We're making CWM backups in the 70s! This one isn't too bad but its still annoying. Again, Samsung is to blame here.
- CM10 still early in development. I don't really know whose fault this is, whether it be Samsung for making things hard for CM devs to get things working on AOSP or a lack of attention for our device. Despite having a "stable" release, CM10 still has a number of known issues that I won't go over here. I still use CM10 and am eternally grateful to the person who pours their free time into giving our device AOSP (I love you, whoever you are) because those aforementioned issues are better than the alternative. It's still a situation where no matter which way I turn I have a buggy phone.
On my O.G. Incredible the only choice I had to deal with was having TV-Out and 720p video recording support or having ps3/Wii controller Bluetooth support. No matter which ROM I chose (AOSP or Stock) everything WORKED. With this phone I have to weigh the evils of each path and simply choose the lesser one.
I'm not really impressed with the DNA either. They do have an unlock (a very brick-prone one at that) but the hardware itself is riddled with issues (No SD card or removable battery, power button hard to press and is on the top of the very long device).
I'll probably get a lot of flak for this post, but its just my opinion. Aside from what I mentioned, I do enjoy the GS3. I just feel I could do much better

Everyone has their needs. This phone doesn't fit yours. Good luck with whatever you choose in the future!

[Q] New phone suggestion for the wife.

So I was hoping for some feedback on possible new phones for my wife, she has been a long time Verizon customer but I have finally convinced her to make the switch to Straight Talk and save some money.
Currently she has a Moto Droid Razr (VZW), I'll briefly list what she is looking for in a new phone and hopefully someone can suggest something:
GSM - I don't need LTE though just HSPDA+
From AT&T - or at least unlocked and will work on AT&T bands
Android OS - preferably ICS or above
Great battery life - she uses it for work and spends a lot of time talking on it
Reliable - the Razr currently suffers from a speaker problem, it seems like a loose connection since a tap will bring it back to life, hoping for something with good build quality
External storage slot
Looking for something that can be rooted and possibly run CM without any problems and reliably, or at least where the stock ROM comes with little bloat.
Price range of around $200 - I know I will be looking used and prices can fluctuate, but around this range.
I have a 8GB N4, and I think that would be good, but it's too much money and lacks the external storage.
I was thinking about a Galaxy Nexus, but I am not sure how the battery life would be. I previously had a HTC One XL and I think that would work well, I was also considering a Galaxy 2 or 3 depending on price, but I'm not sure how much bloat Touchwiz adds, etc.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated, TIA.
Go for galaxy S2.... In my opinion the best choice

I would've once said htc sensation, but never again. Go with the Gnex. The Gnex and the Nexus 4 have the same developers and most of them are still working on the Gnex. You would both be able to run similar roms with similar features so if she looks at your device and wants a feature you have then it won't be hard at all to get it on her device. Besides, she won't have to worry about having something broken because of missing or nonworking lib files since the Gnex is in aosp.
Anyway, in the end its your decision(not really).
Thanks for the input, I'm think I am between the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy 2, anyone know hoe the battery life compares between the 2, in terms of real world usage?
Go for galaxy nexus 4 phones battery backup is nice and suits. For your wife

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to try and find and push her into the Galaxy Nexus, hopefully I can find one in nice shape for around $200, I think the fact I can set it up with CM10.1 and have it duplicate my N4 and the better screen (well higher res) is worth it over the GSII.
