So much for Gorilla Glass.. - HTC One S

My phone was just knocked off a coffee table onto a rug...
Must have met up with a grain of sand. I'm going to see that every time I look at the phone now...
Lesson learned? Use screen protector, even if you hate the rubbery feel
(tried my best to get a picture of it... pretty difficult to focus on)

I work in general construction. Meaning, dirt and saw dust is constantly flying around. I messed up in not buying a screen protector, and now the screen has a few hair line scratches that are only visible in certain lighting and at certain angles.
I don't really care though, cause I have SquareTrade insurance.

ahhh man i'm sorry . . mines got a few scratches on it which pisses me off everytime i see them, i don't even get how the screen got scratched. but that's just phones nowdays if you don't get a huge otterbox case stuffs gonna go down =/ F an otterbox case tho what's the point of the slimmest phone if we gotta do that?!

I recently dropped my phone as well with a case on, wasn't much help, the screen got chipped. however after examining it further, it seems that the screen has been treated with a gloss or some kind of finish on top of the glass. This may explain the scratching issue. It's really the gloss or finish that's being scratched off.

Annnnnnd theres another smaller knick near the top :'(
So I have been contemplating exchanging this phone for another because the lower plastic rear cover sticks out slightly on one side (was that way out of the box)... and I like my expensive things to be as perfect condition as possible (ironic, right?)
Think this damage to the glass will completely kill my chances of Amazon swapping out the phone?

Idk about amazon but I know T-Mobile wouldn't mention it especially if its not cracked cracked

If you don't like the rubbery feel look up realook screen protectors on amazon you can't even tell they are there had one on my vibrant for 2 years before I got my one s and it still looks ok considering the abuse I put it through. I have one on both my wifes and my one s's and she can't tell it's there either.

I had a Vibrant with Gorilla Glass that lasted 2 years without a screen protector and did not have a scratch on it. I thought my new One S would be the same.
Instead, after only 2 days - never having dropped it and with the phone only residing in my pocket (not the same pocket with my keys and change), my One S somehow got a hairline scratch on the screen.
I have since put a screen protector on it - though I much prefer not having one on it. Every time I see the scratch, I still get annoyed.
My advice to anyone considering buying a One S - before you even leave the store, invest in a screen protector.

Geesh.. makes me wonder if Sony's "scratch resistant" glass is actually any more durable..

I wasn't going to place a protector on my One S... but this changed my mind.

That's why you get a screen protector and a shell case right out of the box. If you are that particular about your expensive phone, it is well worth the extra cash. I got a shell case for mine and a screen protector as soon as I got my one s. Also helps resale value later if you have no scratches on it anyplace. X) I love my phone!

I knowwwww but I loved how the phone felt!! but I got a case anyway and had actually put it on earlier that day haha (just not the screen protector)

I learned my lesson the hard way too, now I use cheap matt protectors that I buy from Ebay for £3 for 5. Bargain considering my phone is worth nearly £350, thats as long as the screen stays scratch free

Cool, I am gonna order from Amazon ASAP. How does it feel compared to the glass, is it smooth or does it have some resistance? Or does it have any pixelation?

[Q] Sprint Screen Protectors

Anyone else using the sprint screen protectors for their epic? I just bought a pack and I'm really disappointed with them. They are just big enough to cover the screen it self. So there is no margin for error when putting them on. Also I think they are supposed to be anti-glare so make the beautiful screen of my epic hazy and almost pixelated. Any suggestions for decent clear screen protectors?
Does the epic really need a screen protector? I thought the screen was made from some super durable stuff?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
i know i made the sprint people put one on
i can take the hazyness until i get my skinomi
i recommend skinomi
Its still plastic and there are a lot of things that can scratch plastic.

I'll give skinomi a try. Thanks.

I took mine back for a refund. They just cost too much and made the screen feel unatural. They let me keep the one I had installed already until my new protectors came.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
People have been saying that the skinomi ones are too long I think... I'd recommend the phantom skinz one since I've had no problem, they have a cut out for the sensors and camera (which the skinomi does not have) and they have a lifetime guarantee.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
this is the one im talking bout i ordered one it has lifetime replacements and openings for the sensors and cam it is awesome on the htc hero so i hope it continues
Well, all I know is that at least the first batch of Skinomis didn't turn out so well. See this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746037
Too long, but possibly good customer service? And like I said, no cutouts for the lights/sensor/camera. Skinomi has gotten plenty of good reviews for other phones, but for some reason the ones for the Epic haven't been well received.

Yup! I am no doubt in the minority but I have managed to scratch my screen. It was in strange circumstances having to do with hiking on a trail (and I hardly ever hike, less have my phone out...) but scratchedy it went. No 20ft heights or bouncing. Just fell face down from my pocket on a dirt path with a pebble somewhere in there. They're not invincible, people.
lol unless ur doing stuff like that you dont need a protector

Scratched mine easily... I have 2g steel plugs on my lobes, and the first time i heard them click against the screen I knew I'd have a problem. sure enough, there are tiny scratches from where my ear hit the screen. My fault for not putting a protector on sooner.
Also managed to put a little hairline scratch down by the menu button, but i have no clue how i did that.

Anyone not running a screen protector?

I jus took off my zag hd bc it felt so damn grippy. And I must say I'm kinda falling in love with this phone all over again. Feels so much more responsive. Someone reassure me that it's ok to go protector less. I have 2 cases to kinda protect it.

USE A SCREEN PROTECTOR!! GORILLA GLASS OR NOT. you'll be sorry when it finally does scratch. dont use zagg i took mine off and used a cheapo ebay one works perfect
I used one with my iPhone 3G and never really liked the rubbery feel. When I got my iPhone 4, I couldn't bear to put anything on that screen. I felt the same way with my HOX. The screen is just too damn nice to cover up with anything. I'm getting some microscratches but they are only visible in direct sunlight, so it doesn't bother me much.
Get a protector. Mine scratched (had it for a month). It wasn't major but keys and phone in same pocket dont go well. Even if you try to avoid it.. eventually it will happen. Small light scratches

This is a good point. If you're going bareback, you need to be more careful. My HOX gets a pocket to itself--nothing else goes in there.
No protector since day-one, little hairlines are all over the screen. They're so innocuous that it has to be off and in the sunlight for me to see, but they're there, and I'm pretty sure it's only going to get worse over the next 8+ months I that I'll have the phone before moving on.
I'm very, VERY picky about scuffs and whatnot, I carry this thing by itself in my pockets and never place it face down, I can only assume the screen has something against expensive dress-slack pockets.
My Evo 4G and Evo 3D both went a year in the same conditions with absolutely none of these little hairline scuffs, and that's the only part about it that really gets me. My Evo 4G screen actually cracked (dropped a PSP on it from only about a foot, but the metal corner hit and it was toast) and I replaced it myself with an OEM screen (fingers were crossed) and even that screen never saw a single scuff mark.
I'm getting one of those full-body clear application things. We'll see how that goes.
*insert obligatory "this has been talked about" post*
Now that it's out of the way. It's seriously a YMMV thing. Absolutely no scratches on my HOX. And absolutely no scratches on my old Skyrocket.
Sporting the otterbox defender with no screen protector and always in clip when not in use.
No screen protector, no case. I HATE screen protectors, they completely ruin the feel of the screen.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I don't like cases or screen protectors. They ruin the look and feel of the phone. Cases make it fat, no matter how thin they are. Screen protectors ruin the smooth slick feel of the screen, and remove some visual quality, no matter how good the protector is.
Same with my old Sensation, no protector, but it wasn't scratched.
All it takes is common sense. Don't put the phone in the same pocket as your keys etc...
I never put my phone in my pocket. I use a side pouch.

Screen durability?

There is a YouTube video claiming to be some dude poking his hox with a steak knife. I have an XtremeGuard condom on my screen and it feel fine. I can't take good care of my stuff (e.g. Keys in same pocket as phone) so I am not taking chances.
Not that Reliable
I used my HOX without screen for more than a month but from no where came a couple of scratches. Not from Sand. May be from my keys. I have no idea and I still feel bad for not having had a screen protector. Now I have a screen protector but I can still see the rainbow effect when I see the scratch through the screen protector. Please get a good screen protector if you cannot be extra careful with your phone.
My wife's iPhone 4s has gorilla glass 1 and no screen protector and not a single scratch is yet to be seen. I was expecting Gorilla Glass 2 to be more scratch resistant but I am really disappointed.
It's the oleophobic coating that is getting scratched. I dont think this was perfected in gorilla glass 1 so they may not have included it.
I will never use a device without a screen protector. Gorilla glass or not, glass is glass and plastic is plastic; they all scratch. Even diamonds scratch so I personally won't take chances.
I have Ghost Armour installed on my devices and everything works just as good as naked. If you already have scratches, try GA anyways, they claim to be able to fill scratches.

my exact opinion, either that or u protect ur screen like a maniac so the next owner scratches it for u.. nice job keepin it safe for the next owne ;D i still use a protector cause i plan on keepin this one mint till the One X + comes out cuz i wanna get the most $ i can get out of it
Every phone I have had sinve the windows mobile days have had screen protectors and many cases and extended batteries.. I think I have wasted more money on that crap then phones. lol not to mention the countless hours rooting and flashing roms to the point where the wife thinks im crazy. anyway just got the X and so far its naked and stock.. I have told myself this time. im gonna use the phone as a phone and not worry bout the little things outside of a case etc. not gonna root it or use a screen protector.. guess after 9 years of buying crap and rooting etc.. I need a break. and the one x so far has been great all around.. and the screen rocks naked. feels so much better.. bah anyway rant over... back to work.. lol
I currently have a screen protector on my phone and I hate it. However, I was noticing micro scratches on my phone that also drive me crazy. Like others have said, it is in the coating on the glass but they are permanent. At least with a screen protector, I can swap it out every couple weeks.

You might only have experience with cheapo protectors. A good quality one (Skinomi and Bodyguardz are ones I've used) does not change the look of the screen at all. A quality protector is also difficult to scratch. I've had a Skinomi on an HTC Flyer for over a year, and had a Bodyguardz on my Desire Z for a year and a half, both with no prominent scratches, and protectors still looks close to new. Maybe some superficial scuffing visible in just the right light, but completely invisible when the screen is on. Good protectors also show fingerprints much less than the naked screen, so they actually end up looking better than no protector.
Some people on here have gotten some serious scratches on Gorilla Glass with normal use. Others have claimed no use even after significant abuse. Everyone's experience tends to be a little different.. But more than a few people have showed up on here with bad scratches, wishing they had used a protector. So that is the point of using them. And once you have a scratch on the screen, you can't undo it.
There is a slight difference in feel with a protector. For some that is a legit deal breaker, for others the difference is negligible. Using a protector or not is a very personal choice. I'm totally with you that phones are meant to be used. I don't baby my phones at all. Have never used a case. But I prefer to use a screen protector.

I don't use one, I did on my previous phones. I always hated the way the screen protectors felt compared to the bare glass.
The only scratches I have are from dropping my phone on the street, they are more like little nicks in the screen than
scratches. Now that I already have some, I don't think I'll put a screen protector on. I do have a screen protector that came
with my Otterbox if I feel like putting one on.
I figure that by the time I need a new phone, I'll already have a job and enough money to buy a new phone, so I don't feel like
babying this phone too much.
I've been rockin mine completely naked since release back in may.. hardly any scratches, only noticeable in a well lit area with the screen off at a certain angle. My phone went face first on the cement and slid about 7 inches, and I also dropped mine and I slid across my wood floors and still nothing.

You should be good as long as you don't put it in your pocket with your keys or anything that can scratch it. Also, remember to lightly get most of the dust off before you wipe off finger prints. That way you won't get any small hairline scratches. If you're careful you should be good without one.

I've always preferred naked.
Having said that I've damaged a few too.
If u want to resell, use a cover for the back and a protector for the screen.
The polycarbonate backing within a few days started to show marking.
The screen has a very feint hairline scratch down the middle, but it hasn't been dropped & I'm very careful with handling it.
I'm yet to find covers or protectors that keep the phone looking good as nude, but if u want it looking good as new u wanna cover it up.

I looked up closest ghost armor retailer and had them install the clear ghost armor on the screen and the black carbon weave armor on the back.
I originally had them put a white one on the back as my X is white, but went back and they changed it to a black one for me at my request. Looks good in white an black.
Cost of two pieces installed was 20 bucks, 5 bucks if I ever need a half replaced for life of phone.

I have never used a screen protector. When I bought my One X I was talked into the Zagg protector from an AT&T employee, It wasn't bad but after it started getting hot here in AZ, I pulled it out of my pocket and the screen protector was slidin around. So I took it off. Havn't bothered to replce it and actualy like it better without.
I have always preferred naked phones.
I have never found a screen protector that doesn't make the phone less responsive or make the screen less crisp.
Looking at your phone wrong can cause the One X screen to scratch. (See the thread in the general section, or just Google One X screen scratch)
Others have recommended the Zagg HD screen protector, but I haven't tried one myself.

Oh, no way... Sorry man. Do you know how you got the scratch? I always used to get a screen protector right away, but after one started peeling off my Galaxy S3, I just took it off and never looked back. It's been over 6 months without a protector and not one scratch. Although, I am careful about where I put it. Our Nexus 5's have Gorilla Glass just like my Galaxy S3 does, so hopefully it will be okay without one. I'm still debating if I should get one. I'm not sure what the best screen protector is for the N5. I still need to order a case for mine too. I just got it yesterday. I'm liking it...

If you're going to get one get a glass screen protector. Those plastic ones no matter how good people say they are don't compare at all to the amazing feeling of glass. Glass screen protectors provide scratch protection, protect screen from cracking, and still feel great. Those plastic ones do none of that well.

Having Google send you a new phone under false pretenses because you have a scratch on your screen seems pretty ****ty to me.

Absolutely NO !! on a screen protector...
The main reason is a selfish one....
When I go to sell my Nexus 5 on "Swappa" I don't need the extra competition for selling a "mint device" .
screen protectors are so cheap that i think the real question here is... is there any reason not to get one? I was going to buy one but luckily, the case i bought (spigen) came with one.
There is no value in this Thread...OP, buying a screen protector is on you, either you feel you need it or not.
