Screen Flashes in Messaging App - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I noticed that my screen will flash sometimes when I am sending a text message. Has anyone else had this problem?
I really hope this wasn't posted already, I did try searching for something related.

yes, i've noticed the same thing. plus font sizes changing randomly on their own. lots of bugs with the stock messaging app. makes it rather annoying to use imo.

Have you tried a different app to see if it solves the problem?

yeah, i'm currently running the stock ICS messaging app from the market. it does not flash so it is most certainly an independent problem for the HTC messaging app.

that doesn't alleviate the problem.
edit: i'm about to go back to the stock HTC one though because the LED flash sometimes won't turn off on the stock ICS one. this devices software is all kindsa borked.

I havent really had any other problems beside the data dropping once and a while imo solid device

No big complaints here either. Loving this phone!
I'm sure all these little bugs will be fixed soon enough.

I actually joined just to respond to this thread.
The other issue I'm running into in addition to the changing font sizes and flickering keyboard (which I think might be somewhat related) is an occasionally mis-colored status bar. When I say "occasionally", I mean that when I reboot my phone, there's a 50/50 chance it'll be wrong.
When it does mess up, here's what happens:
In other apps, the status bar is black or transparent black (correct).
In the messaging app text screen, it's a light gray (wrong).
In the messaging app text screen, if I slide or touch the status bar, it's black (correct).
In the messaging app at the conversation screen, it's black again (correct).
I thought maybe it was because I was using a non-standard keyboard, but I've tried both the stock HTC Sense keyboard and Smart Keyboard Pro and they both have the same issue.
Also, just for clarification, when I say "flicker" I don't mean the screen corruption seen on some of the other devices. I mean that for a brief instance, every section of the screen that should be black or dark grey (the status bar, the menu bar, and the keyboard) become a light grey color before flashing back to their correct color. It only lasts about 1/5th a second, but the sudden color change is really noticeable.

I have been experiencing this problem now as well. The font does randomly change. I will set it on medium and sometimes it will be on small or be larger when I go back into the app.
I am also starting to receive text messages twice now. It only happens when I haven't been texting the person for awhile, and it's only their first text. Has anyone else experienced this?

App to keep LED notification going for more than 5 minutes?

Hi,
Is there an app (working with the Sensation) that can make the LED notification light flash continually until you actually open the new message or am I stuck having to bring the phone out of sleep incessantly to check if anything new has come in?
Surely such an app would just eat battery up for no reason.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I've been having a look at this myself,
(i am a noob when it comes to devolping apps)
but i was one first to get desire and there
was a command that you can run (without root)
to get the led to flash different colours length etc..
Tried this on the sensation and just get a file cannot be found.
(if you want to now the command then pm me or
il post it up not that it be much help)
so basically this means all existing apps with run on this old
command, so a new one will be needed when somebody figures
out the file name for the sensation led - then you can
just push a number to it using the echo command and itl work.
put into a java script and your done
wait so the notification light only lasts for 5 minutes? wtf?

What?? Is this true???
You know, I never noticed that since it's my second line. Interesting. Maybe part the reason the standby time is so good on this phone. (really reaching)
I did leave my phone alone for a few hours and no flashing led for my peep mentions.

any update on this?
I just got the phone and the lack of a notification sound or light is a big negative for me.
I would love to see the app NoLED work for the Sen4G which would be a perfect fix for this issue
The HTC Sensation does have notification by sound, LED and Vibration, look closer at your settings check out the settings in HTC Hub

The problem I'm having with NoLED is that I also use Handcent SMS and when you clear the NoLED notification screen it also closes the sms popup window. It's kind of annoying. A fix around that issue is the problem I'm having.
Just installed SMS Popup & it seems to have an option to repeat your reminder & can set an interval. It even turns on the screen which I missed!!!
Testing now.

Edit: yep, works perfectly. Only downside is you lose the awesome lockscreen feature of showing the envelope & text

Haha yes! And I've successfully converted a few others as well. I mainly use it because I can text via my work PC or my home PC. Texting with a full keyboard = a thousand times better
Plus saving on text messaging costs, and ease of porting number over yadda yadda
Anyway, I've been testing out NoLED today and it's a nice app but I don't like that it turns the entire screen on. Massive battery loss there.
Is there a better way?
from what I've read NoLED was made with an AMOLED screen in mind where black doesn't drain the battery because those LEDs are actually off
I've been using NoLED with Handcent. There is an option in NoLED that is Handcent specific that seems to keep the sms popup under the NoLED notification. Just unlock NoLED with the volume rocker and the popup window will remain open. Only downside is when the phone is on vibrate you will be constantly taking the phone out of vibrate mode to unlock NoLED to view sms popups. At that point you'd have to use the home or back key to unluck NoLED but it will dismiss the sms popup. So NoLED is ALMOST a nice fix. Gonna use it for now until something better comes along.

After going through all the app's options and menus extensively, I now have it set to disable the screen via the proximity sensor (ie if in my pocket etc).
Now I'm trying to use the Blink feature so if my phone is on a table or somewhere exposed, the screen isn't 100% on. Rather, it turns off/on periodically.
However, it seems the Blink feature doesn't work on the Sensation? When I get a notification, the screen never turns on.
If I disable blink, it works again right away (but then the screen is on 100% of the time when not in my pocket).

Nova Launcher-dock divider disappears on S3

I prefer to use Nova launcher however there is one big problem that I am experiencing while using it on my Samsung Galaxy S3 Verizon version. The dock divider disappears at random. It happens far too frequently to just ignore. It happens on the play store version and on the beta as well. I would like to buy Prime, however will not do so until this is fixed. It will only return after I enter and exit certain apps or if I restart Nova Launcher. I have switched to Apex until someone can find an answer to this.
Stupid question, but did you accidentally uncheck the option to show it?
Look in dock settings. There is an option for it to be off, in addition to an option to have it fade.

I do not have it set to off. It comes and goes without changing any settings. For example, I go into the play store to update an app and when I back out to get back to the home screen the divider disappears. it does not happen all of the time which makes it harder to pin point where the bug is coming from. If I enter messenger and back out of messenger then the divider comes back. What does the fade option do? I thought it might be the beta version, however it happens on the official version as well.
It just fades away after a few seconds. Uncheck that and test.

That was not checked. I do not see anyone else reporting this issue and I have done a good amount of searching. I am starting to wonder if it is a setting or app in my individual phone that is causing the bug. It is too bad because i believe Nova to be a smoother experience than Apex.

I switched from Apex which I have used for a long time on previous devices to Nova in my G3 (I have the paid version of both apps) & I tried everything I could think of & could not duplicate your problem.
I prefer the dock divider to be hidden, but when I set it to show it works perfectly for me.

Try going into facebook and looking at someone's photo that they had posted and then back out of facebook. That produces the bug for me.
I believe I found out what my issue was. I realized that this only occurred on one of my homescreens. This particular homescreen had many app shortcuts on it as it had two folders with 6 apps each on it along with the other apps taking up the rest of the space on the homscreen. I reduced the amount of items on the homescreen and upon the launcher reproducing the screen after entering an app, the divider no longer disappeared. I believe that there was just too much going on with this particular screen.
That's cool that you figured it out, I agree 100% that Nova is better than Apex for this phone.
I thought I had it, but it has returned. I know what the issue is as I can recreate it every time. I do not know of a fix yet. If infinite scroll is off and you scroll to the homescreen on the far left or right you get a blue animation basically telling you that you can scroll no more. I personally like this animation. If I do that, and then click on my messaging app in my dock and then exit the app, the divider disappears on my galaxy s3. It does not happen every time, but I would say that it happens more often than not. If you change the dock height to large, it does not happen. It only happens when the dock height is on it's default which is medium. Once again, this is using nova launcher prime and it occurs on the official and on the beta.

[Q] Light Flow/notification LED issue - keeps flashing

Hello everyone!
I recently replaced my 3 year old Nexus S with a Nexus 5. It's my second smartphone and I love it. Naturally, I rooted it and everything.
One of the apps that peeked my interest was Light Flow. It's a bit mind-boggling what you can do with it, but I'll figure it all out. However, I noticed one issue straight away...
Notifications in different colours seem to work. I did a test with whatsapp and it blinks green: perfect. However, after a couple of "blinks" a white light flashes "through" it if that makes sense. It doesn't alternate between green and white, no, they just flash through each other, the white light slightly before the green light.
I don't know what is causing this white light to flash, but after I turn off Light Flow and close the app entirely, it keeps flashing. I have to restart my phone to make it stop (or disable notification LED in the Android settings menu).
Does anyone have a similar issue? Or can someone maybe tell me what boxes I have to tick in the Light Flow settings? It could very well be one of the settings is causing this issue. If someone has a certain set-up and it works fine, I'd love to try it and see if it fixes my issue.
Thanks in advance!

I tried another app (Light Manager), and I had the exact same problem. Don't get me wrong, the app is working fine, but once I set everything up and I do a test notification, a white notification keeps flashing even after I turn Light Manager off. The only thing that helps is to disable LED notifications in the Android settings, or to reboot the device.
Something is telling my device that there's a notification, but I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks for the personal reply, andrew! I really appreciate that
However, for some reason my phone keeps flashing this white light, even after I turn off Light Flow. I have to turn off the notification LED in general or reboot my phone for it to stop. The white light notification starts after I do a "missed call test" like described in that link (that works perfectly fine by the way), or after any test I do with Light Flow for that matter. And it doesn't stop no matter how often I clear my notifications.
EDIT: NEVERMIND. Totally forgot that I don't have a sim card yet. That's what was setting off my notifications. Weird though that even after disabling Light Flow it keeps flashing, and weird that it was white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.

Sorry for wasting your time. I totally forgot I didn't have a sim card so Light Flow was making the LED flash because it thought I had no signal.
Still weird that it keeps flashing even after I disable Light Flow, and that it's white instead of cyan like it's supposed to be.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help! It works fine right now. I'm not too sure how the cycle thing works yet. I've tried it with a red slow flash for low battery and a green fast flash for whatsapp but the result is the LEDs flashing kinda "through" each other. Naturally, with different flash rates, I guess.
Quick question for people. For the last couple of updates I've been getting quite a lot of reports of certain notification types not working. Hangouts, emails (not gmail), whatsapp etc
I know that all the types that people are having issues with have been using the notification listener (quite a few stock apps don't use it), has anyone else been seeing this. I'm trying to track it down, but I can't recreate it and the beta testers haven't been able to either. Just interested to work out how much of an issue it is as I've never had reports of this before.
Hey Andrew,
I tested the color cycle for textra app, and google voice. I purposely got both notifications with the screen off and waited for the colors to cycle. It started off cycling both colors, but the cycle was not consistent. For example, the colors were red and blue. It would show like this- blue....red....blue..red..blue..red....red....red....red....red
The time between colors was not consistent, then eventually one color took over. I have the setting to 'cycle all - medium' under battery settings. Have not tested under charge settings yet. I am not using the 'highest priority' or 'show latest' options.
This isn't a deal breaker, but would like to bring to your attention.
Thanks!

I use it for WhatsApp, BBM, Hangouts all w/o issue on my stock N5. My only complaint is the perma-notification in the notification tray. Can't seem to get rid of it with any of the options in settings. Wasn't an issue with older versions (I'm using the latest)
Ive been using lightflow on my N5 and it's working well
I have multiple notifications set up - all set for 'permanent' rather than flashing. I have turned EMAIL notifications OFF
however - sometimes, I am not entirely sure when, I notice a white (slightly bluish?) blinking LED. I can't figure out what causes this. I suspect it MAY be email (exchange email, not gmail) - but I am not sure - I can't reproduce consistently.
Also, sometimes when I do a 'test model' on SMS apps, no LED lights up. I've stopped using "SMS Apps" and now am using "Hangouts" as a notification instead and that seems to work
Had 2 hours full wakelock on lightflow this morning -from the minute I unplugged from charge
very strange
Isn't the white light you're seeing the default LED color? Whenever I get a Gmail or Exchange mail it blinks white. I don't have Light Flow installed.
Yes I think it is the standard light. however with lightflow that's not meant to occur.
either way it appears to have stopped now.. not sure how/why!
Try turning off your LED notifications in each program and just have Light Flow control them. That should stop the default white light from showing.

Hey Andrew, Great work on this app. It is fantastic and I was happy to upgrade to the full version.
Just wanted to share that I have the lingering notification scenario also. essentially I get a few notifications and once I clear them out and the screen turns off, the light continues to blink. It is usually the last notification that came in (I have different colours set and I can tell that what sticks is what came in last).
To be honest, I wonder if it is Kit Kat not clearing out the notification and the issue has nothing to do with LF. Interestingly another way to clear the issue is to bump the notification with another real one, and then accept that notification (i.e. light still blinks without any active notification, I call the phone and miss the call, it blinks for the missed call, I clear that, and we are back to normal)
Hope this might have helped.
Anyone able to get the Camera Light LED/flash to work? The one on the back.
I enabled it in setting and I've tried all the other ones not officially supported too with no success.
Also had the notification light not dismissing problems too. But I'm thinking I got it figured out now. Hasn't happened since.

Some Screenshots of the new Lollipop release

I am loving the looks, I mean the Whitish themes everywhere, that's what I wanted for so long. Just some screenshots in case one want to look how some sections look, for fun, that's all. I am stating some of my views on it too, please share yours too.
However not everything is great, I don't like how they have ruled out the scaling on the options, you might encounter one or two mi****s every now and then. I mean when you tap on option of some app, the OK, Discard etc. options have no box outlining those options, so you don't know where the scaling finishes. They shouldn't have done that. Tapping with fingers (which is and will be mostly done) can't always be precise. I have already miss tapped in some places!
I also don't like how they changed the notification clock font size, the AM/PM font is bigger than the clock itself, weird. The lockscreen clock has also been redone, it now has a slimmer font that KitKat, which I am not a fan of.
And I don't know whether this is a placebo effect or not, but am I the only one who is feeling that the in call loudness (volume) is a little softer than KitKat? Don't know, can't be sure.
The Dialler app now goes full screen, I mean edge to edge, simple change yet looks much much better
The Multi-Window mode doesn't have any small U shaped notification any more when enabled at the side of the screen, you just long press the back button to enable or disable it.
The lock screen notifications are directly tap-able and expandable, instead of dragging down and then tapping it to expand it from KitKat.
I guess you guys can use this topic to report bugs, whichever you have found. If this topic seems like a duplicate then remove it immediately.
Have fun.
PS: One more thing, I flashed the Polish version of the ROM on my Arab N9005, 32 GB. I tried to flash the German ROM first, because it had multi CSC but it failed to flash, so keep that in mind, I mean I think the German ROM is meant for 16 GB variants only.

I'm glad you like it. I bloody hate it. The white hurts, quite literally.
I also don't like how they changed the notification clock font size, the AM/PM font is bigger than the clock itself, weird. The lockscreen clock has also been redone, it now has a slimmer font that KitKat, which I am not a fan of.

Really? I never noticed... Oh right, I only use 24h clocks.
PS: One more thing, I flashed the Polish version of the ROM on my Arab N9005, 32 GB. I tried to flash the German ROM first, because it had multi CSC but it failed to flash, so keep that in mind, I mean I think the German ROM is meant for 16 GB variants only.

There is no 16GB Note 3 variant outside Asia... I recall there being an issue with the German rom when flashing over to another back when 4.4 came out. You needed the PIT file to sucessfully flash from the German rom to another. This could be related.

This! PLEASE! I suffer from migraines, any white screen causes needle spikes in my head! Imagine it for a second, every time you open a menu, it feels like someone drives a needle into your skull.

From Developer menu you can invert colors, but that's ... all colors. At least you get rid of white.
I noticed a bug: turning the screen on isn't smooth, it looks like a two step process light up.
A missing "feature": hovering your finger over the lockscreen no longer produces an effect.

And this is why I don't plan on upgrading before at least xposed works perfectly and there is a way to force a black theme onto everything.
Okay after playing with the release for couple of hours I am really not liking it any more (except the colour part). I mean as usual with Samsung, they hurried up and released an unfinished ROM IMHO.
First and the most annoying thing I am noticing that the WiFi password (WPA) is reset every time when I toggle Flight mode back and forth. This is extremely annoying and I am sure there's a way around it, or am I wrong?
- Never mind, it's solved now.
Secondly, where is the Mute/Silent option? I mean it's either Ringer mode or Vibrate mode, but there's no Silent/Mute mode!
Thirdly, the upcoming alarm time doesn't show up on Lock Screen! What the heck?
If someone can tell me how to get rid of the above please tell me, I am mainly annoyed by the first problem though, the WiFi password reset problem.
I've not heard the password issue before. Are you sure it's not just a bug?
The silent mode is split.
You have one toggle that decides how you are notified. (the old sound toggle) Sets to either sound or vibrate.
And another toggle that decides what you're notified about. (Looks like an entry forbidden sign). All, Priority or None. This is where you set Silent mode.
If you set this to priority, you can decide which apps notify you. (settings > sound and notification) Call, text, etc.
If you set it to None, you're not notified with sound or vibration. The notification still shows up on the screen.
Be careful, as this will also silence alarms!
I would suggest priority mode and simply disabling everything in its settings except alarms.
The alarm on the lockscreen, nope. They removed it. Fortunately we can always use GO locker.

I believe the WiFi passwords not saving issue can be solved by editing build.prop (that is how I fixed it on the leaked version, haven't updated myself yet)
Look for ro.securestorage.support and change it from true to false. I tripped the KNOX flag long time ago (doesn't change my warranty) and I haven't noticed any misbehaviours.

Yes, it was a bug, I mean it was a problem because my bootloader wasn't updated. Reflashed the ROM, all is okay now.

Yes, was playing with that Interruptions option and figured that, but still that's a weird way. Don't know why Google decided to ditch the Silent mode, well at least Samsung could have kept that.
Go Locker? Well I tried a lot of third party lockers last week, didn't like any of them. I guess I will have to find a different alarm clock app which could give me an option to show the upcoming alarm time on lock screen, it's such a nifty feature to have. There's a module in Xposed which shows the actual alarm time in status bar (instead of that damn alarm icon) but well Xposed is not yet ready for TouchWiz ROMs, but when it becomes okay I will simply install that module. In the meantime I will have to look for a alarm app, that's all.
^xposed alpha 1 already released have not yet used it though. Still playing around with stock unrooted rom.

Yep mate, just saw that. Is it working okay with TW Lollipop now, I mean no more boot loop? Don't really want to try, in case bootloop happens I will have to redo all those formats and all, which I simply hate.
The only Xposed module I badly need is MinMin Gurad, can't stand ads, and AdAway is, well, complicated.

First Impressions of Android 7

I have had this update for about 10 days now and I seem to have issues I never had with this phone before. Nothing major, just annoying things like notifications for SMS not being 100% reliable, and if I use the keypad on a call it seems to add a number press when I put the phone to my ear and now for the first time, I am having trouble with my PC and my phone getting into file transfer mode. Has anyone else had anything strange happen since the update? Or am I just the lucky one.
So far it's fixed all of my issues. With my auto brightness, Bluetooth, and my locking issues. Haven't had any of the ones you've listed.

Late notification in Nougat can be due to the more aggressive Doze. Turn off Optimization for your sms app to solve it.
The update did solve the sensor stop working bug they introduced in the last few updates, but yeah there are quirks I don't like:
- The checkbox to enable/disable auto brightness is now buried another click deeper.
- Samsung Themes are now not fully compatible with this Samsung Nougat update. #genius
- Status bar font is too small and weirdly tall.
- In optimized mode the lock screen disappears after 3 seconds. It's useless and there isn't a setting to increase this.
- the notification slider theme is horrendously difficult to read. Font is too small, locked to black on white text. It needs to go back to how it was.
On the flip side, the App drawer now auto sorts alphabetically. Only took them this long to solve that!

Interesting...but I'm not seeing most of that. What do you mean by "optimized mode" for the screen? In the display settings under "screen mode" I've got:
Adaptive display
AMOLED cinema
AMOLED photo
Basic
i'm set on Adaptive display. In the Screen Timeout section I've got it set to one minute. I put the phone down and timed it on my watch. the screen dimmed at 50 seconds and turned off at exactly 1 minute....so seems to be working unless I'm looking at something different than you?
Status bar font doesn't look too small to me but of course "too small" is subjective. Still, my old eyes are not as good as they used to be and I can read it fine without my glasses on. Tried swtiching screen resolutions back and forth between max an 1920x1080 and didn't notice a difference between them, just to see if it was a resolution issue.
Question I always as after a major OS update: Have you done a factory reset? I have not yet. I usually run it for a while as is and do a reset when I get some time. But in the past i've seen a reset cure any number of issues.
I've only noticed 2 things wrong.
No keyboard vibration feedback when on a call.
After google play services updated my gmail emails not coming automatically. Removing/adding my google account fixed that.

Its not optimized mode for the screen. Its Power Optimized Mode (go to the settings battery menu). My comment was for the "lock screen" dissappearing after 3 seconds. This is the screen that pops up when you turn on power and BEFORE you unlock the phone. It shows summaries of notifications... for all of 3 useless seconds.

I have not reset the phone and refuse to unless something in the OS simply cannot be resolved. Just like I'm not going to reformat my Windows PC drive if a program has a bug. You should reset your system/dalvik cache. Although that should be done automatically during the update.

I too don't reformat my Windows PC to fix a bug. But I do do it after a major OS update such as Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for example. No, you don't have to but...
Any way to turn on autocorrect in the quick reply feature? When I hit reply and the keyboard pops up (standard Samsung keyboard) auto correct and predictive text do not appear not function leaving me to have to go back and retype my errors. It literally appears and works everywhere else.
I can't seem to change the font size in the Message app. The setting doesn't stick. Anyone else?
Problem I have with the update is phone calls always start off with the external speaker. I have to tap the speaker icon a couple times to get the internal speaker going.

I have changed my font to Samsung Sans and it changed in the messaging app with no issues. I'm using Samsung's default messaging app.
Honestly I'm having zero issues since the update. I did a factory reset following the update. I realize we shouldn't have to do this but I do it after every big update just to be sure.

Same here! I'm pretty shocked.. Mine is smooth, and I have yet to reset either..
But then, there are a ton of units in circulation.. Especially after the 7 fallout..
Hmmnnn.. It'd be nice if they released the 8 early(that just popped into my brain)!

It's not just changing the font. I changed mine to Samsung Sans as well and it worked fine. My issue was in the Messages app, in Settings -> Font Size, if I tried to change the font size it wouldn't stick. The font was a tad small so I wanted to increase it one level. I realized last night that once you're in the Font Size menu the header is just plain white (at least on my phone) so it looks like there is no way to back out. I was using the back button which probably cancelled the edit. I tried again but clicking the blank header and now it's working. Am I the only one who sees the white only header? All other menus seem to have the header describing the screen with back (less than) symbol, e.g. "< MESSAGES SETTINGS" but it's missing on the Font size menu.

Not sure if this is your issue, but many interface issues, including unreadable white headers, stem from the fact that Themes from prior Android versions (even Samsung Themes) are NOT fully compatible with Nougat. If you attempt to re-apply your theme then you should get that warning. I had to apply a brand new theme to solve my header issues.

I just discovered you can change font size within the actual message. Use the 2 finger pinch to zoom in and out.
