hi i'm kind of new to this. I rooted the atrix 2 and put a rom file in the SD card. I can't flash it because i don't have the proper update.zip file. How do I obtain that file?

Follow the instructions on the ROM's post... is it a flashable zip file, or CWM restore? We got both styles for the A2 roms..
If it's a .zip install, then choose the option "install zip from sdcard" in recovery; if it's a CWM backup, you need to unzip it then put it in your clockworkmod/backup folder on your sdcard, then choose "restore". Again, follow the instructions in the original thread.. including the proper wipes and whatnot.

ok I have no idea what you are talking about. I would need more info to help. that said, I am getting a little mad at how many people that have no idea what they are doing are trying to flash roms. GOOGLE BEFORE ASKING. honestly, there is so much right in our forum here and the rest on google that it should make the process clear. if not, you probably have no business whatsoever getting into this stuff.

I have flashed my SGS1 and SGS2 multiple times. I remember renaming a file to update.zip and also putting the rom into the SD root and then flashing it from CWM. For the Atrix 2 I am not sure what I'm doing wrong, that's all. Sorry if I can't learn from Google so I had to ask?

yep, I understand why you could be confused, stuff is weird for our phone, but everywhere does have pretty clear instructions. I am not trying to be mean here, but please do your reading before asking. Look at the major roms like lithium, supercharged, sonya, blaze and more, the OP's have details and links.

yep, you're soft bricked, no problem to get out of though. got to the post in my signature and then go to the mirrors link. download the restore to stock script. extract it on your computer, plug your phone in to the computer and boot into fastboot by pulling the battery, putting it back and starting it while holding both volume buttons, select fastboot. run the .bat file in the script folder. you should be fine after it goes. Whatever you do do not unplug it in the middle of the flash, or you will be totally screwed.
First off i'd like to apologize on behalf of those who sounded rude/irritated to you, most people are nice on here and we tend to help each other out when we can. Don't let 1 person put you off from messing with your phone, we all started somewhere I have yet to meet a person who was a "pro" from the start.
So since your phone is softbricked you need to flash the stock FXZ (I hope you made a CWM backup), for instructions on how to do that go to the Beginners Guide by clicking here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650
Then install CWM again and now onto flashing. You don't need to rename any zip to update.zip, you can CHOOSE a zip on your SdCard with CWM, the option is there, it's in "Install Zip from sdcard" ----> "Choose Zip from sdcard"
Now, like someone said, there are 2 types of flashing. Flashing ZIP's and RESTORING a CWM backup. In order to know which one you need to do you need to read the install instructions carefully and thoroughly.
What rom we're you trying to install?

I need to apologize too. I am generally very willing to help out those who do not understand everything that is going on on these forums. I don't get it all either. That said users do need to understand that a forum is not only about posting new topics with questions, but reading all the older ones too. I think I may try to write up a shorter more concise guide to some of this stuff for our phone that is easy to follow for all users. I just tend to get mad when so many people are breaking things when they do not know how to recover from them. I would never try to do something to my phone until I knew what could go wrong, and how to recover from those things. I do not want to keep anyone away from modding their phone, I just want to help them understand the risks involved.
I am very sorry if this came off as me being rude or inconsiderate. I hope I can make it up to you by getting a good thread out with clear instructions. I think I will basically include how to flash the roms, how to recover from bootloops/ softbricks, and some other basics in an easy to understand way with screenshots and stuff. Do you think this should go in development or general? I am leaning towards development since it is very important towards the roms, but if not, please tell me.
Thank you, and sorry I sounded rude.

I believe it should go in general, as development is really only supposed to be for actual dev such as roms kernels, and other mods.

I need very basic help with what appears to be quite simple to everyone else. For example, I was told I needed to flash a different modem and I have no idea how to do that. I tried searching the forums with "flash modem" and got hundreds of threads containing those words but not any telling me how to do it. I Googled and Binged but got nowhere. I hate asking other members for help all the time; but, without tutorials, that's all I can do.
Try this one out this really helped me. Flash the Captivate.

Thanks for both of your replies; but, I guess I'm just dumb. Because, as I read through the information available on both links, I could see instructions on how to flash a new ROM, which I have done with help from another member, but I don't see how to flash just a modem, or kernel, to an existing ROM on the phone. Certainly you don't have to follow the same procedure to flash a modem as you do an entire ROM. Or, do you?

its simple. if you know how to get into clockworkmod recovery, you install zip from sd, point to the modem.zip file that you downloaded, and run it. that part is the same as flashing a rom, but you dont have to wipe/odin/or anything like that.
and it takes literally seconds to flash it
Thank you to each of you for your help.
These are the best tutorials that I have found

Ok if anyone can help me out on this. I would like to put a list of things you Need to do AFTER rooting your Inspire. Long story short I looked around countless of thread and find bits of pieces of things to do after your root.
Just would like to start something where this is a list to what you need to do after your done. So if ANYONE can help me out and may help others out with just the same ?s. This would be awesome. I know there are somethings like Titanium back up, ROM Manager, ClockWork. But if anyone can help put this together. Thank you.
Also if you have any videos that you can share that shows how to install something(because who does not like a Tut Video lol) rather it be a ROM or making a NANDOID(if thats right) backup if you need or not maybe just some how To's because I had to Root back to stock and this [ROM] AT&T Stock ROM - Sense [Unroot] and the user helped me out, thanks again friend, very informative.
thanks again for any help hints and walk throughs.
I for got to add this in once your done rooting you can check it with super user to see if everything is good. Also I found these guys to become very helpful major Props to them.. ANDROID Applications (How-To Backup & Restore) Titanium Backup just look that up on youtube or something
Not trying to be mean, but did you even take a look at the guide? I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember there being a video posted there.
As for what you do after you root your phone, you can flash a rom if you want... I mean its really a subjective question..
yes I looked just any video dealing with the inspire I hoping that this thread could kind of be one place for some ?s I see all over the place but its worth a shot to see if it turns out that way but for others that see the title of this thread could get some help with out ppl being "mean" for a ?s thats been asked and yes there is a search bar but...hey not everyone use it as much as we reply with "There is a search bar you know" or any other remark..
So Im hoping with that said that this thread could help other out with some Very common ?s. Because other user dont see a thread that looks like what they are looking for so others make a thread asking ?s that has been asked many times so with in time maybe this could help a lot of others.. Idk we will see..
Also after seeing a lot of videos about this there is so many different things that are said to do or to get and its get confusing and I can see how it could throw some user off..Because what through me off is the Making of a Nanadoid back up.. I kind of still dont know how lol.
That would be why the guide is stickied at the top its meant to be a one stop shop for "new rooters". There is about 20 pages of questions and answers, and many of the members will stop by and answer including devs.
And there a four videos posted in the opening post, one for the hack kit (outdated) and one for bubbys root method. There are also two other videos one that shows you how to recover from a soft brick, and how to flash a rom (including a nandroid back up).
The main reason for the guide to be stickied was to elevate the general forum, from getting a lot of redundant questions, which it has helped.
To answer your question, after you root you really don't have to do anything. As I said before you can flash a rom and make a nandroid backup, which is covered in the guide. You can flash a radio, which there is also a link to the thread for this. You can flash a theme for a rom, which is generally the same as flashing a rom. You can install market apps that require root access.
The only thing that "would/should be" required after rooting would be flashing a recovery ie. clock work mod recovery, which is covered in both rooting processes.
As I said before I am not trying to be mean or rude, but that is kind of why the guide was stickied.
I got you chief.. And I dont take it anything personal its the internet LOL! but If you dont mind can you past the link about making that nanadoid back up. and btw your not the only one with videos more then four. But yeah I hear about the same ?s being asked and yea your thread is like 300+ with a lot lol.. but Idk was hoping that this could be more organized I see that you have a lot of fixes and radios..etc..good stuff though.
I hope Im not steeling you thunder for post..

A nandoid back up is as simple as this...
Assuming you're rooted, and haven't flashed cwr yet...
Download ROM manager
Open it and choose flash clockwork recovery.
Once that's done, choose backup current rom
Provide a name for your backup
Let it reboot and do the backup.
If you already have clockwork recovery flashed, you can reboot into recovery and select the appropriate menu choice, though if you initiate the backup directly from cwr, I don't think it let's you choose the name.

That's correct, but the backups are stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/$datecode$ It's very easy to rename them after the fact.... so long as you do it within a reasonable time period.
you can also do it from rom manager and name the backup.
sweet.. I just re rooted like an hour ago just re setting some stuff up
First off love the N00b video at sign up that was hysterical, nice work to whoever made it.
Ok on to what I need to know:
I understand HOW TO root/flash a rom, my issue is kind of different than most peoples. I have scoured the web and this site for the files I need to accomplish this with my GT-P3113 build ending in LG5 however I am confused to hell.
1 place will say that CWM 6.0.1 is not usable on my device, another will say that it works fine and another will say to use TWRP (which might I add looks cool to use). Some will say that I need the expresso_wifi file to root my device, others will say use update.zip, and others will say a totally different file all together.
I know what ROM to get, I understand the steps:
Download drivers
Boot to download
use odin to install CWM
back up everything with CWM (which goes to the MicroSD I am guessing? since I wipe the device in a later step)
wipe the device
wipe the cache
wipe the Dalvik cache
flash the rom
flash the root
is all that correct? (just to make sure I got it right) so my biggest question is, which files do I really use? There is a thread from back in June before the 4.0.4 update OTA came through) saying to use instead of that if you have LG3 or etc.
Help would be greatly appreciated, I am a smart guy, just want to have my facts straight before I make this happen.
PS sorry if this is in the wrong place, figured this was the best place for it.
Please be sure and thank the person who decides to do your homework for you.

From someone relatively new to this as well, this is basically correct. Here are some tips from someone who has recently done it.
Make a backup.
Research the files you intend to flash, make sure they are right for your device
Verify the guide you are using has been tested and known to work.
This may seem elementary, but I didn't follow #3 and it cost me a lot of headache un-bricking my SGT 2.

Fully agreed! That's why I came to the experts. I have done my homework but the thing is my homework leads me to several different files from before the ICS update. There has only been 1 thread on 1 forum that has been post ICS update, and no real feedback on it. I think I even found one that uses ADB (I understand that concept, but would prefer not to use it since I don't know Linux well enough).
I would love to know what files to use, which ones to stay away from. As I said I have the concepts, I have the understanding, its the actual files that I want to verify, I can rattle off tons of files from tons of sites, but they may or may not be correct (and may have the same name as a correct one but still be incorrect, ie "update.zip" appears a few times on different threads from different time frames).
There is only post in the teamhacksung CM10 wiki that was last edited 8/12/2012, but that could have been anything that was updated, not the files/links to be used.
So I thank you in advance for your help, and you will certainly get a thank you in the forum for help you are providing, I always give credit where credit is due.
Well here goes nothing, going to reboot (to ensure the Kies drivers are installed and loaded into the system 100%), and try the instructions from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788625
It seems to work for most, the only concern I have is that I have a different end to the build than most others do (and I am not sure why?)
Did I screw myself?
I rooted, and have CWM installed.
Is it to late to create a ROM backup of my device for when i go to install CM10 (I need a drink for now, so I might install it tomorrow night lol).
That link I posted in the last post is good to go if anyone else needs a safe bet set of directions.
Seriously though, I didn't do a backup, am I screwed now?
EDIT: I just did a back up and it said no sdcard/.android secure found, skipping of backup of apps
and
no sd-ext found skipping backup of that.
is that normal? Did it backup to my microSD?
Still hope I didn't screw myself by backing it up after rooting.
Trying to smooth out my tablet before college stats back up. My model is a gt-n8013, and i have already downloaded the files for the Redemption Rom onto the internal storage, and did the zedomax root. I am currently staring at the cwm mode, and a bit unsure of how to proceed. I read through every post of the original thread for the note 10.1 redemption rom, and tried to put my first post there, but was redirected to the Q&A. I would really appreciate if someone gave a clear-cut (for dummies, if you want to call it that) step by step on what thing to selected, in order, while in (high-on-android) CWM mode? also I am unsure if i am to use the whole downloaded file i got for the rom, or just select certain files that are specific to my GT-n8013. I did spend hours reading through every post in the original thread as well as many other things on google, but I am still a bit confused on where to go to get it right. I apologize for any inconvenience, and greatly thank all of you in advance, as you have helped me find out just how limitless things can be.
Also, I have never heard of aroma, and can't find out how to get into it on cwm...

If your in cwm first thing is to back up your stock rom to external SD.
What does this mean.i knew you.could update.a zip in recovery but.how do you flash in recovery like a boot animation for example
To use recovery to flash (another term for install) the file needs to be in zip format. Always make sure that the zip you're flashing is made for your phone and Android version. The best thing to do is make a nandroid backup, it's similar to a Windows restore point. It will save you if you flash something that doesn't work.
So do you use the update option to install the zip?
Sounds like you are referring to the stock recovery. Most zips here need to be flashed through a custom recovery like TWRP or philz.

You really need to take about 10 steps back. You've been posting in multiple threads with the same basic questions that should already be known before posting. Please start using Google (answers to all your questions can be found all over the Internet) and read, read, read. Here's the first link you should read: Understanding the Journey. Sorry, but XDA isn't about being hand-fed every answer. Thanks.
I agree with Ramer. When I first wanted to root and customize a phone I spent countless hours reading, and researching, and reading more before I even attempted anything. I then downloaded what I wanted and also what I needed to fix my phone in case something went wrong and made sure I knew how to fix it. I still do the same thing and it has been about 6 years since the first time I rooted a phone. Don't just dive in blindly, be prepared.
