changing Recovery (cwm to 4ext) - HTC Sensation

I've been looking for an answer with the search function (and of course i've googled the qustion) but i could not find one.
I've the Tmous Sensation 4g with stock-rooted ics and CWM (S-ON). Can I switch my recovery (cwm) with 4ext? and if i can, how??! should i follow the regular process for install 4ext?!
I need the swithc because to install a new rom but i'm not looking for go through the Jupuntobear process so 4ext it's the only "good" way left

Download this file extract the files and place the recovery.img file in the tools folder of your SDK folder. Hold down shift and right click, then select "Open command window here" and type the following into the window, "fastboot recovery recovery.img".

Or you could download the 4ext app from the market and install recovery through the app. I did it this way with no problems.
Edit: sorry, you need to be s-off to do it this way.

I've unlocked the boot loader, now what?

Hi guys, I have desire s, hboot v. 2, sense 3, android 2.3.5. I've unlocked the boot leader using thehtcdev procedure, the device is still s-on. What do I have to do next to obtain root? I don't want to change the rom, just to have root with the stock rom. Thanks
Install recovery (Clockworkmode or 4extrecovery).
If you want your stock room, but rooted, download to your SDCard superuser.zip (you can found it on forum) and install it.
If you want use custom room, just download your room, take it to SDcard, get to recovery, wipe all data and install it.
For all download & informations, check this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186401
Thanks man, I found the correct superuser.zip. However I'm running to a problem - there is an error in the recovery console... When I reboot and select recovery I see a triangle with an exclamation mark for a minute, then a message "Can't mount cache/recovery/command". Then if I select "Install zip from sdcard" the phone simply reboots and doesn't allow to select the zip.
I tried also superoneclick... it performs around 9-10 steps and then says Root: False.

Locked myself out - how to flash new recovery?

Good Afternoon to all of you!
So here is my problem.
I S-Offed my HTC Sensation and afterwards installed Revolutionary Recovery following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Afterwards I installed the Firmware 3.30 and Virtuouse S4X Rom successfully on my device. But I wasnt to happy with this Rom so I decided I want to go for Energy Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226564).
Unfortunalety, the flashing of this ROM doesnt worked, while flashing it said "Status 1 Error". I searched in the post of this ROM and found out that its recommended to install it with a earlier release of Revolutionary Recovery or better with 4EXT Touch Recovery.
My big problem is: How do I install 4EXT Touch Recovery when I dont have any bootable ROM on my device anymore?? I tryed the Android Flasher but it didnt work...
Please help, I dont know what to do.
Best regardy,
Journeyman91
Remove sdcard put it in card reader
download IMG.zip of whatever recovery u r trying to install put sdcard reader in computer then move IMG.zip to root of sdcard. Put sdcard back in phone then fastboot...should find IMG.zip then install that way. Hit thanks if I helped

Please tell me you have a nandroid back up to revert to. And are you SuperCID as well? If you did back up, just revert back to the prior rom, I assume stock Sense. Then go to the market or the threads here to download the 4ext recovery.

[Q] S-Off then T-Mobile ICS OTA / Undo?

Hi Everyone,
Just doing a sanity check. I have just made my stock GB sensation 4g (t-mobile) S-OFF using revolutionary and choose not to install a recovery. My phone is working fine after reboot.
My next plan is T-mobile ICS update.
Questions
1) If I download the update OTA will I be able to undo later and choose a custom rom? if yes how?
2) Same as Q1 but what if i FIRST install "4EXT Recovery Control" before the OTA?
3) If instead (of 1 and 2) install "4EXT Recovery Control" and then install the rooted ZIP of the t-mobile update what radio and RLL do I need to install and where do I get those?
4) If I proceed with 3 and then choose to flash a "pure" ICS custom ROM what are people thinking of the new ICS Tmobile wifi-calling app APK install on these more custom roms ? - i.e. how stable is it?
Many thanks !
Aside: I ask not only for myself but also for x3 other people with (stock GB) Sensation 4G's that I will help out with.
For others, here were my steps so far for S-OFF:
1. Download v1.1 tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497404 and run.
2. Install HTC drivers.
3. Remove battery from phone. Put battery back in. hold down power+ VOL DOWN – wait until boot screen.
note down HBOOT version number. Then reboot phone
4. Use tool to start “revolutionary s-off method”, make a note of the serial number in the key prompt.
5. Connect phone and select htc sync mode
6. Go to: http://revolutionary.io/ and chose windows download so you can unlock a beta key.
7. Enter the serial number from the console and copy your beta key (CASE SENSITIVE)
8. Paste beta key into console and hit enter
9. Choose NO to clock work recovery
10. Reboot phone

Yes, by flashing a custom recovery with a PG58IMG.zip and then flashing the rom with recovery. This will work with ICS roms, but if you want to go back to GB then there's a little more involved.
2) Same as Q1 but what if i FIRST install "4EXT Recovery Control" before the OTA?
The OTA will fail if you do not have stock recovery.
3) If instead (of 1 and 2) install "4EXT Recovery Control" and then install the rooted ZIP of the t-mobile update what radio and RLL do I need to install and where do I get those?
This is the stock firmware for TMOUS ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656413
4) If I proceed with 3 and then choose to flash a "pure" ICS custom ROM what are people thinking of the new ICS Tmobile wifi-calling app APK install on these more custom roms ? - i.e. how stable is it?
It's not reported to work well with AOSP roms.

I have a follow up (noob) question:
Status:
Stock GB with S-OFF (see above)
I have purchased and installed Ext4 control.
I have purchased and installed titanium backup pro.
I have installed busybox app.
4) All of the above require root before I can use them. All of the guides for root I have seen instruct me to install Clockwork Mod. If I do that (install CWM, get root, set CID to 111111 etc.) will I then have issues using EXT4 control? anything to be aware of?
5) Suggestions for how to proceed to get the rooted t-mobile ICS on and matching radio?
Thank you.
Aside: I now helped get one more sensation to S-OFF (2 of 4) , 2 more to go.

Ok, I have now got Clockwork mod on my phone.
I somewhat followed : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
actual steps:
1) Isntall CWM 5.2 from the "Sensation_All-In-One_Toolkit_v1.1" (phone connected on usb and in htc sync mode.
2) rebooted
3) copied "PG58IMG.zip" to the rood of my sd card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=706572&d=1314848127
4) remove battery, re-install, hold down power+ vol DOWN until boot menu. Press volume UP to install the .ZIP
5) rebooted
6) REMOVED "PG58IMG.zip" to the rood of my sd card
7) copied "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip" to the root of my SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=670828&d=1311991644
8) remove battery, re-install, hold down power+ vol DOWN until boot menu.
9) selected recovery, select choose zip form sd card. scroll down and find "su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip". apply that update.
Aside: I tired twice and both times the install ended with an error 0. However on reboot I do have superuser (SU) shortcut in apps draw and it does work.
10) Reboot
11) Look for superuser app on phone. load it.
12) Run busybox app (installed previousl) and install busy box.
13)Run titanium back up pro and start backing up EVERYTHING.
Next is Super CID .....
Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. It looks like you got it all figured out though.
Flash 4ext recovery from the app you downloaded for 4ext. Be sure to make a backup of your stock Rom once you flash 4ext

{HELP} device is keep booting into recovey -- SOLVED --

To the Guru of this forum. After my last rom flashing my device is keeping booting into recovery :crying:. Is it briked ? If so my only hope is the unbricking project ? Thanks in advance.
What recovery are you running?
Can you use the power menu within recovery to boot into bootloader?
Also, please provide as much pertinent info as possible, ie: rom you flashed, firmware, s-off or s-on, locked or unlocked. With your description it's basically like saying, "my car makes a noise all the time. what is causing it?".
Its not bricked. If u can enter recovery

Sorry you are right:
What recovery are you running? 4Ext
Can you use the power menu within recovery to boot into bootloader? yes
The device is HTC unlocked with S-On.
Rom JBMIUI v4.1 2.8.31 R2.
HBOOT 1.27.0000
firmware 3.33.401.6
I've format everything but SD. Restored the most recent back up done today before flashing. Once it reboots HTC logo comes up once, black screen, HTC logo, 4Ext is coming up saying that smartflash it is set to update the boot partition on next system start asking if this should be removed.
I've downloaded and installed again PG58IMG *different files using bootloader
I've founded a 3.33.401.6-Unsecured-Boot.img,+Root+Busybox zip file that can be installed via recovery but it did not help.
At this point I need a bit of help to look into the right direction and I'm not sure that Unbrick_Pyramid is the right way.
Thanks again.
Try turning off smartflash and flash a 3.33 stock rom to see if it will boot.
What was your last working setup, and what were you trying to install?

Hi. Manage to flash a stock 3.33.
It stopped to reboot straight into recovery.
Sits now on HTC logo now for about 10 mins. I plan to let him run for 1 hr and see what happens.
Was thinking to install CWM on the basis that could be a 4ext recovery issue, toughs?

If you can install clockworkmod that may help.
Tge device isnt getting the message that it has already booted into recovery once. So something may be jacked up with 4ext.
Clockwork may bypass all that when it doesnt know what to do with that signal to run smartflash.
Worst case scenario...put a full pm58img containing a rom and recovery on the sf card and flash that through bootloader.
You should still be able to get to bootloader as the device looks for that option first.

And did that help? Are you able to get into recovery without errors now? If so you should be able to flash a fresh version of any ROM.
Try that first. Get any ROM. Flash it. See if it boots.
If you have successfully replaced 4EXT I will bet a fresh flash of a ROM will now boot.
Also worth a shot is replacing or upgrading the firmware, as that could be what's sending the phone into recovery on each boot (though this is less likely that 4EXT just being broken)
Flash a firmware PM58IMG like 3.32 or 3.33 and see if that helps.
But for starters, put a fresh ROM on the SD card and flash it with CWM. (BE SURE IT'S A ROM THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE 4EXT!!)
Once you've got it all fixed you can switch back to 4EXT. I have a feeling it was just the copy you were running that got botched. The software itself is solid and stable. A new copy shoudl work fine now.
CWM v5.0.2.0 was installed fine.
3.33 firmware installed once again.
Using this I've installed ROM that I already did in the past w/o luck, they all sit on the HTC logo. Is like the initial boot sequence is broken. Is boot.img part of the firmware or ROM ?
Trying to download some additional ones.
Thanks,

The more details you give, the better the answers will be. Don't consider any detail too small.
What do you mean you installed ROM's that you had done in the past? Do you mean you are trying to restore a backup made with 4EXT?
That won't work. You need to flash a fresh version of the ROM after wiping.
Also, CWM won't install some ROM's that you may have used in the past. What ROM are you trying to install?
The HTC logo that first pops up when you hit the power button is part of the firmware.
Make sure you do a full wipe of everything but the SD card from within CWM. Get whatever's causing the problem off that way. Then flash a fresh install of a ROM from scratch.
Hi.
I did not use any backup only fresh ROMs: ARHD, Elegantia, but also stock ROMs I could find.
I've tried also some PG58IMG with ROM included.
Cheers.

- re-lock bootloader via fastboot oem lock
- apply stock ROM founded in this list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
- rebooted fine
I guess that HTC RUU had some superpower and erase and installed whatever file(s) were corrupted.
Now I'm on stock 3.6 - fw 3.33.401.106 - radio 11.76A.3504.00UU_11.24A.3504.31_M
HBOOT 1.29 - S-ON - Relocked.
Standard Recovery.
Now I'm reading how to return my device to S-OFF w/o damaging it again.

Recovery need help

Here are the chronology:
1. I use viper rom for quite a while, but never be able to update OTA. Always need to flash it manually and i'm ok with it.
2. But OTA update is way much easier. I must try it. I said "hmm propably the 4ext recovery is way too old, i need to update".
3. My current 4ext recovery v2.2.7 rc5 classic. A very old one..
4. Do some search on XDA and found 4ext recovery updater 2.4.6.
5. I check for the newer one and choose to install. And now at the top my version change to a new 4ext recovery touch v1.0.0.5 rc8
6. Then i reboot into recovery, but this is where I get confused..it still show the old one
7. Do some reboot and go into 4ext updater, and now it shows my current version is the old one. It reverted back
8. Keep trying but to no avail. I even power off completely instead of reboot into recovery.
9. I even tried manually flashboot flash recovery in command prompt but to no avail.
10. I tried search to remove custom recovery, install from scratch but my search return a solution to revert to stock RUU that will make my phone completely stock, unroot, etc. I definitely doesn't want to go that far.
I hope some1 can help. I'm tired :crying: Btw i'm s-on, hboot 2.00.0002, and htc-dev unlocked (probably the problem?)

While S-ON you have to flash the recovery image via fastboot. Use the option in 4EXT app to save the recovery on the SDCard, then transfer to a PC, extract the img and flash
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
