[Q] charging battery with separate battery dock charger - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

i dont know if this question has been asked before i havent seen it. is it any better to charge your battery with a wall dock charger where only the battery is on it charging rather than hooked through a cable in the phone. i dont really know if theres a difference if some one could help me out that would be great

As per first hand experience I have noticed my battery when charged outside of the phone eventually gets ruined. I have had this happen to me twice along with a friend a third time. Took the phone to at&t and they said the battery was fried and it had something to do with the difference in how the phone barges the battery and how the external battery charger does.

HTC chrger VS Samsung Charger

before i got my galaxy s i used to own the htc desire,
now when i charge the galaxy s with its own charger i never get more than 12 hours of standby and the battery just dies
with the htc desire charger i get more than one day of battery life, actually now after 1d 45min since being unpluged i still got 42% of battery life (with the exact same usage as my everyday usage)
now after checking the output voltage in both i found out that they both output 5volts , but the galaxy s is 0.7 amps, while the desire is 1amp
so do you think that i should keep using the htc desire's charger to charge the galaxy s, or this slight increase in amp can damage the phone.
by the way , i tried 2 different samsung chargers , and they both give me no more than 12 hours of standby time , so i know that i do not have a problem in the charger.
any help will be appreciated
thanks
You are tempting me to buy a htc charger as I am dying to get it past 12 hrs of usage.

I'm in the same situation as you and after charging with HTC charger I got a lot of extra battery life!!
I don't think that the increase in amps could damage the phone or battery
thx for the info i will test this to i'm getting now one day off heavy use with my sgs
report will also follow

The total amount of extra battery life was about 50% for me yesterday. Great!!

Gonna try with my old Diamond's wall charger. 5V 1.0A. Let's see...
oooh! Is it a desire or the desire HD? might buy that charger too!
I didn't even know chargers make a difference? How is it a charger even does that?

For what phone of Desire family is it? Or all of them have the same?
If possible, please tell me the exact code name of adapter
I´ve lost my charger and need new anyway, and this looks like interesting option
Thanks in advance! .)
My Samsung Charger just stopped working and I only have my HTC HD2 charger to use so I haven't got a clue. Just shows how rubbish the Samsung one is though i barely used it as it is and its broken.
This is very peculiar to me.
The charger shouldn't be making a huge difference, but the way I see it, if the charger is output more current to the battery in a faster period of time, it might be charging the battery "more" or over charging, or the samsung undercharging.
The battery life of a phone SHOULD be determined by the mAh rating of the battery. and if both chargers are charging the phone until "100%" then they should not be draining at different rates.
The best way to test this is to get a sustained load and put it on the batteries and see if they match up to the rated mAh ratings. I wish i was still in school so i had access to this stuff so i could test it.
who cares if more amps cause damage, the only damage it will cause is to the battery.
the average battery should last the same as the phone - say 3 - 4 years ??
so if using the HTC charger ruins the battery is 2 - 3 years, who gives a **** lol, aslong as my battery life increases, im happy to buy a replacement charger in 2 - 3 years, BUT by then i would have moved on to another device anyway.
I say if it works, USE IT !!! to hell with the consequences, live life to the max !!
Thanks for sharing this info. I will give it a try with my friend's HTC charger...
Just to add to this.
USB outputs 5v +- 10% & between 500-900mA so if you charge via USB this would have the same effect would it not?
thanks alferret for that info , i really wanted to know that, so now i guess there's no harm in using the htc charger,
i am using it now as my phone charger , and i am getting no problem so far
thanks
Guys if your charger breaks the problem might be the chargers plug or mini usb (iv bought a cheap charger and it was charging but i could not use the phone literally i thought iv burned the screen)iv opened up mine and one of the wires(mine was the black one)was detached try opening with something sharp its really easy to do
just try it those cables detach really easy
Or if your really lazy buy one if you wanna
Funnily enough, yesterday at work I used a Sony Ericsson charger, just top up my phone a bit. Went from 80 to 100 percent in virtually no time.
Strange. I will check my chargers at home
Mine too , after one month and i`m using an LG charger

On Motorola and HTC phones (maybe others as well), chargers are a Micro USB cable with a USB adapter. I wish Samsung would do the same. Much more eco-friendly.
Thanks for the info. I will give it a try with my wife HTC charger.

Spare Battery Charger

Hey guys, g2x is on its way gonna be here monday. I know with my past devices like my hd2. The battery life was good but died after almost a day and close to night i would run out of battery. I thought it would be handy to have another battery to just pop in when my other was getting low so i didnt have to sit next to a charger. Im planning on getting an OEM battery as a spare.
So my question is, has anyone found a nice "spare battery" charger that you could charge just the battery without the phone? Like a cradle for it? or even a dock that holds the phone and the battery? Or have you had an positive experiences with any specific ones?
Thanks
Maybe this is what you're looking for.

You could also get a charger like this:
http://www.amazon.com/PowerGen-Multi-Purpose-Universal-Battery-Surround/dp/B004B8A5MK
I bought one and it's great because any Li-Ion battery will charge in it. You just move the pins around to align properly. So I can use it with my camera batteries, Nexus One, Optimus One, etc.

[Q] D2G "Dead". Help reviving?

I used to have a D2G before I upgraded. Well I gave it to my sister and she happily used it for about 2 months. Then, about a week ago it just "died". Its pretty much a paperweight. The way it was explained to me the battery died and it won't hold a charge. I can't boot it at all because it won't take a charge from any cable and the OEM wall charger we had was damaged. The charge light blinks when its plugged in.
The device was rooted and running CM7. Was only about 11 months old and bought through Wirefly with no insurance so any hope of replacement is out. Any opinions on if it can be revived? Not will to insvest in a new charger/battery/battery only charger if she's dead.
did you pull the battery and check battery connections
you can buy a new battery cheap
or charger
phone may just need a charged battery and do a SBF
http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/SBF
but will not charge until a SBF is done
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437177
I haven't checked the connections yet. Did do a pull for 10 minutes just for good measure. Also I intend to SBF it if I can boot it but that hasn't succeeded yet. Just not really too keen on spending yet. Really tight budget.
it is possible that battery just got too low for usb charging
and a wall charger will work
I'm hoping so. The problem is the OEM charger is damaged and won't charge it. I'm hoping to borrow one from a floormate if they have one and see if it'll work.

If battery was drained down completely, you won't be able to kick off charging using low current source (USB port), you need wall charger rated at least 850mA. The more, the better. Pretty much any smart phone nowadays uses such chargers, so I am sure you won't have trouble finding one among your friends. Tablets are often 1.5-2A which is even better.
When you plug it in, it may take like 30+ minutes before phone comes to life. Charging indication will start displaying only after battery is "off the bottom"
I recommend you to try to recharge the battery before you go any further.
My Stratosphere has a 1A wall adapter. I'm trying that. I'mma also try my friends to see what'll work.

Like everyone else is saying, wall charge the battery. Try putting it in someone elses phone and charging it as well if the first idea doesn't work.
There's a chance (though I haven't seen this happen out of the blue) that the OS was erased. Without an os the phone won't charge the battery. SO either charge your battery in someone elses phone or use someone elses battery to SBF your phone.

On Charge Draining Like No Tomorow

I Have A Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 I Got It About 8 Months Ago I've Used The Samsung Official Charging "Cable" For Most Of That 8 Months but about 2 months ago the cable became loose at the Samsung cable to tablet end exposing the wires so I was careful with it and put it away and used my friends official cable then he needed it back so I went off and brought a generic cheep cable for $3.50 So all was good there but slowly I've noticed my battery going crazy like taking longer to charge "2 Days to full" and things like it discharging by 2% when I am on Google while its on charge and when its off charge playing 1 game uses almost all the battery.
so being the awesome soldier that I am I made myself a 5cm cable hoping that the long cable I was using had something to do with it but still I had the problems listed above so I did some Googleing and maybe a 2.5A charger would be helpful But its not recommended. also I sent a email to Samsung and being the "SUPER HELPFULL COMPANY THAT THEY ARE" has not responded to my emails in the past week's Also I Spoke To A live chat person thing and Being "Soo Helpful! " Said that its a hardware fault and I need to take it into a Samsung repair place and fork out $100+ Bucks to get it fixed "HELL NO AnT No BoDy GoT TiMe FoR ThAt" so I didn't go to Samsung to get it repaired so I want to know if any of you guys out there have any idea to fix this problem im having because its so hard to do anything.
Just Checking my emails while its on charge uses %4, On Google for like 5 mins Uses 2%, Playing A Game For 30Mins Uses Well Almost Flattens It, And Watching Some YouTube Takes It Down To 0% And Then Shuts Down( I Watch Lost Of Videos) All This While Its On Charge
At The Moment How Im Copeing Is I Carry Arrount An Inverter And A 12V Battery To Keep It Charging
The SGN 10.1 charging cable is a specially designed cable to deliver 2.1A 5V to the device.
Most "cheap" cable on the market can only deliver 0.5A - 1A 5V when used to charge SGN 10.1
You should find the correct cable specifically built for SGN 10.1

Thanks but how can a cable make all the difference i managed to charge off my old one its just got exposed wires and it still drains when i use it
Are you certain that the battery is actually draining that fast and not simply misreporting it in the UI?
I had a similar problem where the battery didn't seem to last but I eventually noticed that a reboot would completely change the amount of charge remaining, sometimes by as much as 20%. I cleared the battery stats and is been fine since.

Well actually when-ever I turn it off it doesent charge much and if I restart it the battery stays the same but over the last few days ive noticed something weird when its on chatge and I play a game it drops about 20-30% but when its not on charge and on battery it drops by about 5-6% could the charger be draining it? also I have a new new cable its generic (IM NOT PAYING $60 FOR A CHARGER CABLE) and there is no difference still does the weird charging thing also I tried the old cable and still does the same thing the olny thing wrong with the old cable is that the wires where exposed so I dident want to use it just incase it broke

If you don't want an OEM cable and charger you can buy a crap chinese one. But as you and many others have discovered - they suck. This is one of the biggest complaints I have always heard about Samsung.
The solution, and the only on that I have found that works 100% of the time is to buy a replacement from Samsung. Period. Nothing else works like the OEM parts because they aren't OEM parts.

The wiring on the OEM cable is somehow different than most cheap cable.
I'm experimenting by buying a 3M long "cheap" N8000 cable on eBay, may be it can help (delivery time is VERY long )

What ROM are you using?
Stock or Custom?
Rooted or not?
If you are Rooted (Stock or Custom) you can use Battery Calibration app to erase batterystats.bin to calibrate your battery percentage which are needed if you change ROM.

$60 just for a cable? Really? I live in the UK and I bought a whole new charger (official Samsung one, too, including a cable) for about £12 on amazon. Just go to Amazon and replace the charger, it sounds like it'll be cheaper than just the cable (probably 15-20 USD or maybe 30-35 AUD, I'm not sure what the rate is and where you live ) and if it is a charger related issue that'll be fixed too.
Just so you know, I bought the 'travel charger' (the white one) and it works perfectly. Supplies the same current and voltage, and it's a smaller unit, and cheaper! I'd just look into getting one of those.

[Q] photon not charging.

Hi guys I have a photon Q with kitkat and pacman. When i plug the charger into the phone on the quick view screen it says charging but when I go into battery under settings it says not charging, also if I leave it like this it loses charge not gains it. Anyone have this issue or know a fix? I've tried many different chargers luckily i have second battery and external charger keeps me going for now.

If you've had your battery out at all, it's possible that the flex ribbon has torn. I've had a couple do this, so I tape the batteries onto the rear chassis. The battery then comes away with the chassis if you need to remove it.
Unless the battery is stuck down well, it moves a little bit with general use- this leads to the tearing.
I also had one charger that drained the battery!
