system folder Out of space - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There is no room left in the system/app folder on the XOOM for any additional .apk's? Why is system folder on XOOM with ICS so tight on space but there is plenty of extra space for the OS to use for storage and other things?

Because the system only needs room for updates.

Get titanium backup pro. You will see some system apps highlighted in red. Choose some, on each of your choice, long press and select covert to user app.that way, you will free up memorg space in system. Hope this helps you...

[Q] Valhalla 1.2 Launcher Issues

Have to post here since I'm new... Love Valhalla 1.2! I just get way too many reboots/restarts with (I think) the launcher. If I move an app around, it reboots. Is there a fix/alternate launcher for this? Whitehawkx is the man! I'll donate if it helps!
I'm using Valhalla 1.2 and I get the same thing. I've noticed that anytime that does happen, if I am patient and don't touch the phone for a few minutes, it will eventually settle down again. It only happens to me rarely now. It can be annoying though, I agree.
I think most of us use a launcher from the Market. I use Launcher Pro (I have the paid version but there is a free one) and it works Great. It is way better that stock in my opinion.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
i removed the launcher.apk before flashing. put launcherpro.apk in my system/app folder of the zip file. I then added the ro.home__app_adj=1 line into my build.prop.
finally, i removed w/e apps didnt want and added others to the system/app folder. then i flashed the rom.
i dont have any problems with the launcher redraws anymore cause 1. it is now a system app and 2. it has a high priority when it comes to ram.

you can also place the launcher pro key in the system/app folder prior to install and the pro launcher will automatically be installed. makes flashing very easy should you not want to restore data. it also give you a ton more space because the ROM memory and the internal are separate. instead of only using 200mb of ROM memory and 400 mb of internal, i use 400mb of ROM and only 140mb of internal space.

Hrm...jager555, do you think it would be okay to delete launcher.apk through Titanium and manually push launcherpro.apk into the /system/app? Also, my .apk for launcherpro is "com.fede.launcher-1.apk". Did you rename yours or did you just say that for simplicity purposes?
Does that extra line you add to your build.prop put the launcher into high priority RAM? If so, can't you just set that in the LauncherPro memory settings?
I've still been getting the redraws, so I wanna try this method.

hmmmm interesting method...would this work with go launcher ex as well?
is there any way to make an app high priority in RAM, for some reason my messaging app (go sms pro) always gets killed...didn't have this problem in froyo, but it happens a lot in GB

i would start fresh, to be honest. if you delete the launcher while it is the only launcher running, you are going to get fc's like crazy. i would put launcherpro in the system/app prior to flashing the rom. i do it this way because during the flash, it installs other things too (hidden folders, themes, other things). i usually test everything out before i delete it, but i get rid of all of the launcher stuff, download ui apps, live wallpapers, and 99% of the things i dont use. like with ftw, it had adw launcher, adw themes, and all of this stuff that i dont use, so i delete it before it is even installed. since we've all been scarred with the crapiness of the windows registry, i like to keep things neat.
i found an interesting way to get the actual launcher apk, so you guys feel free to use this method (woot). it will work for 99% of apk (does not work for quickpic, tegrak). uninstall launcherpro. now, redownload it from the market. once it downloads and installs, open root explorer, go to your cache folder. in that, you should see a file called download.apk. this is the launcher pro.apk you just downloaded and installed from the market (think about it. its like your temp folder in windows). take this file and copy it out of the folder to wherever you want. this is the file you put in your system/app folder. i do this for everything. so i dont have to redownload everything. sometimes, i like to start fresh and not restore my personal data and this method makes it easy. you can cust if i ever switch phones to help someone else, i can just flash my customized rom with apps and have it have all the things i have, but with no data. its nice.
the extra line does put it as high priority (credit goes to antonx for that). i did try putting it as high priority in the settings, but it still gave me a ton of redraws on lp.
try it out and if it still redraws, set it as high priority in the launcher settings. or you can change the line item to 0 instead of 1. (ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1) i put this line at the very bottom of my build prop. i only get launcher redraws if i am in multiple apps without closing them and the phone goes to sleep for an hour or two.
bkoon, hope this helps, man

i use go sms pro and i never have that problem. did you delete your mms.apk from the system folder? if you didnt, then that may be why. mms.apk will always have priority over gosms. use the method i told bkoon above to set it as a system app and once you remove mms.apk, you shouldnt get too many closes. yes, it should work with go launcher.
geez, whitehawk, idk how you tweaked this rom, but man are you efficient. im am truly impressed with memory usage on this rom. can't praise you enough for this.
I don't know why every1 is having launcher issues. I never had any problem with it..Do you guys UV or OC to extreme setting or maybe have too many tabs or icons? btw I used titanium backup and remove even more stuff I don't use from the rom like wifi calling, google maps, latitude, drive smart..etc.
You should keep google maps. I think it's needed, isn't it?

I have completely uninstalled it before and it caused no issues for me. However it does come in handy now and then so now I just freeze it until I need it again.. It is a Huge App that only seems to get bigger. I wish we could choose what updates we want and just apply those.

Google map is not needed. You can remove it and still be fine, but i do have another map application called ndrive that only runs when i start it up. it have turn by turn voice navigation and offline map .

@jager555
Is there a guide or a thread somewhere I can read to learn how to mod a ROM BEFORE I flash it? Like you describe in this thread.
I follow what you are saying but because of my level of knowledge I need something more definitive ie what tools I would need and the processes.
I have a windows 7 laptop (brand new) and have 7zip installed. I am going to download and install ADB tonight using a guide from addictivetips.com..
I feel I'm ready to start modding like this... Flashing in fun but this is really modding your Android!
Forgive me if I have gotten off topic or personalized the thread but it seems related to me.
Thank you

lol. its easy, just open the zip file on your computer, go to system folder in the rom, then to app folder. from there, you can add/remove apks. no need for adb. you can do this in linux or mac as well. its a simple procedure that can make the world of difference.
once again, be sure to know what you are removing. what i would recommend is downloading a rom and making a copy to mess with. flash the rom on your phone, then use titanium to see what you can delete. once you know what you can delete, remove it on the copy on the computer. then once you are done, add all of the apps you want into the system/app folder (remember you have a limited space) and then flash the custom rom. its kind of fun to do because it gives you a much better understanding of the system.
i can write a guide, but honestly, i am so busy with work, it will take me a long time. i can try to work on it, but i know for a fact, not this week. i am just swamped.

It sounds easy and I understand what you are saying. It is definitely the way I want to go from now on. I will take your recommendation of downloading and copying a ROM to mess with. It is how I learn mostly anyway
I've done a ton of deleting using TB these last few months so I already know what can be safely removed.
As for the guide, hell you just wrote it lol.
I know you are busy. You help everyone in our Community ALL THE TIME and thanks for your replies. This has turned out to be a very informative thread.. I can't wait until I know a fraction of what you and other members here know.

so I deleted both the mms.apk and the TWlauncher.apk from the system/app folder...I put the GO Launcher EX.apk and the GO SMS Pro.apk into the system/app folder, it works fine at first, but when I restart my phone I get a "unexpected data error, please reinstall GO Launcher EX" error message and forced to uninstall go launcher, also go sms pro disappears from my phone and is no longer installed, without me even uninstalling it...right now I still have the touchwiz launcher and the mms.apk deleted off of my phone, but I had to take go launcher and go sms pro out of my system/app folder for everything to work fine, I also still have you build prop line added...I'm still having the problem with sms pro getting killed often since I guess it isn't a high priority RAM app, since it isnt in the system/app folder...any ideas how I can get your method to work?

The go sms apk that I put in my system/app folder is actually from a zip file that I downloaded off the internet...I purposely use an old version of go sms that doesn't force me to use the in house Go dev's picture viewer when handling MMS messages...

[Solved] [Q] Increase internal memory A request to Devs

Hello All DEVs & G3 users,
Please let me know how to increase the internal memory of my ROM.
I am missing something.
Even tried to compress all of the apk's. Failed.
My ROM is pretty good but only problem is low Internal Memory (92MB).
Probably you would be knowing this but just to tell you -
Try deleteing all the unwanted app like swype, YouTube , Gmail, live wallpapers, wallpaper, which take more methods.
Use a theme and bootanimation which small and compact.
Ex. Miui theme hogs internel memory and same is the case with heavy boot animations. Try using the gingerbread theme cause that's small.
Also try deleting the ringtones and notification sounds that you would never use. (I DONT KNOW IF THAT WORKS BUT I THINK IT WOULD BECAUSE ITS ON INTERNEL MEMORY)
Aso try deleting the cache file. That's the most you can do.
Sent from my GT-I5800 using xda premium
dude i think its not too low memory as you think my rom's internel memory was 101 mb & it was pretty good....

[Req] SD Control app?

I am sick and tired of having to manually delete folders from my SD cards that i don't want there, like the Burstly Images and Openfeint. I don't want these there taking up space. We have apps like SD Maid for cleaning up dead folders, but nothing to block specific folder or search them out and delete them with the tap of a widget or on a schedule. I would much rather block them entirely, though. Is there a way to lock down the SD card from apps?
Thanks
Damn you Swype!
Seriously? Nothing?

sounds like a script job, not a full blown app.
i'm still too green at android developmemt to know where/how to start.

Link for those who want to see more, but you have to buy it in store:
http://www.biglots.com/search/product/7324
Specs are pretty good for only $100 except the screen resolution is a bit low, but you get ICS.
I had this in my hands today at biglots,im in baltimore,md let me tell u its very smooth,no delay in opening apps, booted in like 20 sec, only turn off was no camera,im really thinking about going back and getting one tomorrow, shoot for $99 u can't beat it,a tablet with ics, plus there is a following for it on freaktab,i just wanted to read up on it before i bought it and so far every review seem good,so looks like tomorrow im gonna grab one cause they had about 10 in stock, and ill be back tomorrow with a brief review on how it works and the pros vs cons of getting this tablet!!!! : )

For $99.99 its one good tablet.
No camera and no bluetooth but its not a deal breaker for me.
Compare to kindle fire at $199 and running gingerbread, the polaroid is a steal.
I use acer iconia a500 for work, kindle fire and nook tablet as spare for my nieces and nephews.
Now I have this tablet for them to play.
And you can plug in USB thumb drive through micro USB adapter and it works.
Installing google play market is as easy as installing google services framework.apk (by tapping it) than push/copy vending.apk to system/app directory and reboot. I use ES file explorer to push the files.
Battery life kinda suck but not too shabby it last 4 hours for me playing netfilx non stop.
The screen has 5 points capacitive and quite responsive.
As long as you dont have high expectation you wont be disappointed.
I believe the old tablet ICS version is semi rooted (you need to remount the system directory to RW with root explorer or ES file explorer), However mine is Fully rooted out of the box (The system folder already mounted as RW)
Great HW, but 512mb if kernel isnt good are not much...
for only 99$ it's great anyway
Good choice for starter tab
I picked one up this weekend, and I have to say it is an excellent choice for the money. completly rooted from the factory you can install any app from the market that is compatible with tablets once you have google play installed. i also replaced the stock launcher with Nova Launcher which works flawlessly, upgraded the version of youtube that came with the device without issues and also was able to install most of the google apps from CM including gmail, calendar, galary etc.
The only draw back at this point is no custom recovery so building and flashing custom roms is at this point not an option however it is android 4.0.3 and you can pull and edit any of the system files and framework to your hearts desire you just need to be careful if you make an edit that prevents it from booting your basically screwed your only hope will be if you can push the original file back via adb.
I am going to start looking into some custom themes and possibly a customized systemUI and framework as time permits, I am currently busy with a Sense 3.6 and Sense 4.0a rom for the inspire/desireHD world so will try to fit this in as time permits.
My recomendation is if you want a inexpensive tablet to play with that has some excellent capabilities go get one of these before there gone.

device comes prerooted, you need to install a root capable file explorer first. here's how:
1. download and install the latest Android SDK
2. Using ADB commands
a. connect your 701i to your PC
b. at a command prompt type "adb remount"
c. type "adb push GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app/"
d. type "adb push Vending.apk /system/app/"
e. type "adb reboot"
3. open "Google Play" from your apps drawer
4. search for "esfile explorer"
5. install "esfile explorer"
now you have google play and a root capable file explorer.
google apps can be found searching google or xda (make sure it the ICS version)

Download the file below
http://rapidshare.com/files/4069402236/marketpolaroid.zip
Unzip and copy it into your sd card
insert the sd card into the tablet
open file manager (already there on your tablet)
navigate to your sd card and tap to install
ES File Explorer 1.6.1.3.apk
OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
To check root access
- Open es file explorer
- go to settings
- scroll down to Root settings
- make sure there are check sign under Root Explorer and Mount File System (Mine already selected since its fully rooted out of the box) If not, select or check it to have root access to system folder
Install Market
- With ES file explorer Navigate to your ext-sdcard (by tapping the star sign/Favorites) and copy Vending.apk to system/app by the following
- Long press Vending.apk and select copy (you will see drawer icon on the bottom)
- Select favorites (star symbol) and tap phone symbol or / (its the second icon from the left after Home icon)
- Tap system folder than tap app folder
- Once you on app folder, drag the drawer icon up and tap Vending.apk to paste it.
- Once its successfully done you need to change the Permissions to RW R R
by long press the Vending.apk-Properties - than change (under permissions)
If for some reason you cant install OneTimeInitializer-signed.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk by tapping it, do the same procedure as copying the Vending.apk
Now reboot and you should have Google Market.
Got mine today this thing is great,i hope someone can get a custom recovery working on here and maybe get some custom roms working on here,i'd like to see what sense 4.0 looks like on here,i think it would look bad ass,out of a 1to10 i give it a 9 pretty freakin sweet for a $100 ics tablet.

Found this quite interesting when I was in the Big Lots store yesterday. Almost picked it up then. After reading some info here, seeing that it is pre-rooted and can get the google marketplace, I'm in. Gonna be going tomorrow to get one.
I'm the unlucky one. I bought one today and when I checked the Android version it said 2.3.4.
My model is 701c...gonna take it back and check for the 701i

Also i cant find "my files" like in my galaxy the file explorer/manager.
Last is the task manager where you can kill all apps in 1 go and see ram usage how do i get to it?
Click to collapse
Stock launcher is unable to do this, you need apex launcher to be able to create folders in the app drawer. There might be some others that are able to do this, but this is the only one I know of.
You can browse your files by installing a file explorer from the play store. These are my favorites:
File explorer

ES File explorer

As of task managers, use them as little as possible because android will just reload the apps again so using task killers just uses more resources. I don't use it to kill apps only to review system info. Incidentally I'll kill an app that's stuck, but that's about once every 2 days.

Ik really like glextor to organize my apps http://glextor.com/
As mdentenr said, Apex launcher is really good and can creat app folder in the app page!
Only the paid Apex version can do that. It's a great app! I use apex free and glextor, great combo.
