Hi all,
How to switch on GPS programatically.
Thanks & Regards,
Dinesh
You can't do that other way than opening GPS settings. Security concerns.
Use SwitchPro widget, Luke
Thanks for your reply

Hmm, are you sure it really enable/disable GPS directly? As I said I believe this isn't possible without some hacking, root access, etc. Just tried "GPS on/off" widget from the Market (because SwitchPro is paid app) and it does exactly what I said: it opens locations settings.
ok thanks for your reply.
I can Enable/Disable GPS directly. but i can't Enable/Disable GPS programatically.

I am sure, becaus I'm using this widget. Older versions just opened GPS settings, but latest one v1.6 turns GPS on/off directly.

Yes it does, doesn't appear to be using root either. It's possible it could be using an exploit though?

Maybe it requires root? Or some custom ROM? Unfortunately it's paid app and I won't pay for it just to check, how it works. I don't think it uses "clean" way to accomplish that.
Ok, it uses Power Control widget to set GPS status. This widget is a system app, so it has superpowers (can enable/disable GPS directly) and SwitchPro let him think, that someone has clicked on GPS button.
Of course this widget isn't in official Android API, it isn't integral part of Android system, so this may not work on some devices, some ROMs, may also break totally in the future. You could use same technique, but you shouldn't.
EDIT:
Ahh and seems this widget is a huge security hole. This should be fixed, I will create an issue in Android issue tracker, if there isn't one.

Ok, this is already in their issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=7890
Thought as much, the dev should really go back to the 'official' way IMO.
Is there still a way to do this ? Because on the issue tracker page they said it was already "fixed" (that means broken to me ).
I need to set auto turn on for GPS on a given time. Is that possible ?

No. It's a feature, not a bug.
Feature of what ? Do you mean the android power management widget ?
If it's a feature, than it should still be possible to turn on GPS through it.

It's safety concern. Google didn't give you a possibility to switch GPS purposely and only one reason, why you could do it, was that they made some security hole. Now they have fixed it, so you won't be able to switch GPS - at least without another bug ;-)
Hi androiest
How can google map start gps without going throught the settings activity ??
So I`m new here and if my thread is not on the right place - sorry. And here it is my problem:
I`m using Widgetsoid Switcher Widget and have this very annoying problem that when i turn on something it not works (For example: I turn on my data service, widget indicates that it`s turned on but actually it's not. If I turned it on from the Settings menu the widget indicates it`s turned on and when I stop it from the widget it doesn`t stop). Same with WiFi and GPS... This thing is freaking me out so if somebody can help me it would be great or if you can tell me other app like that one with options for customization. Thanks in advance
Can`t somebody help me?

Hi,
Try to uninstall, install and reboot directly after install (it's important!).
After go to global preferences and check "Disable all apn"
Create your widgets and it will be ok.
Now everythings is fine but Data Service still doesnt't work... Any ideas?
data toggle help
i had the same problem with the data/3g toggle on my htc evo. what you have to do is go to "settings->wireless & networks->then scroll down and make sure there is a check mark in the "mobile network" setting" in order for the widget to control it the setting must first be enabled. it took me and the dev 3 days to find this out.
also if that doesn't work go into the app itself and as soon as it opens it you should see something at the top that says data toggle mode. make sure that setting is set to "APN toggle" and not "APN rename"
hope this helps. remember to rep if it did
Thanks man
No problem

I had a similar problem today, it looks like the data switch in Widgetsoid places a dash in front of your AccessPoint name in order to block data transfer and removes that dash when you click switch again.
After messing with Widget I was not able to connect to net, I installed, uninstalled, etc, and then I noticed that APN list was empty, I had to add the APN again and restart it, I think (as said above) that you need the data to be ON then do a restart in order for Widgetsoid to properly read the status.
If you're rooted, use the new "root method" to toggle data. It doesn't mess with your APN & it works flawlessly for me. It's the first time I've had a data toggle that actually works.
A simple method
FIX = Settings>Location & Security>Select Device Administrators> *Uncheck Widgetsoid
Uninstalled
Thanks to: mr.noobsalot
I know this is an old thread, but where is the global preferences on version 3.4.1 it doesnt appear when I click apply.
Im using a HTC sensation and ICS.
Thanks

Stay FAR away from Widgetsoid. It can slow a Galaxy S5 down to a Crawl. Your Dialer will not function, Your phone will not respond. Its trying to load your phone with Ads or something and keeps your CPU busy, whether its a dual core or quad doesn't matter. Developer does not respond and does not seem to care. After uninstalling this App, the phone feels "new" again.
I believe this app is some type of Spyware/Malware combo. Why does it need access to my Contacts? Something very fishy and the developer never responds. It's a great Widget when it works but certain things about it don't seem right. Uninstalled!
Ok, so I may be a little iffy here.
I have tasker and secure settings w/ helper installed and I'm running the latest version of cleanrom lite.
So in secure settings I have the GPS option enabled via helper and in Tasker I'm able to select it as a misc action.
What I want to do is have it enable GPS when I launch the Map, Nav, or Places application and disable when I leave them. I think I have it set up properly, but my problem is it isn't enabling the GPS. The profile will enable but it won't change the setting.
Any feedback here?
Edit: I found the fix. I feel derpy. For anyone looking to do something similar once you have Secure Settings w/ Helper installed and you go to set the setting in Tasker do not attempt to go Misc - > GPS. It won't work. Instead select Plugin -> Secure Settings -> Configuration and choose GPS. That'll get it working for you just peachy.

I'm rooted, I have Superuser, busybox, secure settings and helper all installed. I have "green circles" at each location in helper indicating that I can change all these things but when i hit "Plugin>secure settings>configuration" I only get the top half of the list...not the bottom half.
can someone help?
Edited to add: found the answer; the right side green check boxes needed to be checked.
Thank you thank you. I've been looking for this fix. love tasker not easy to use though
Thank you!

I've tried this I've set it to enabled and toggle and nothing happens when I open my satnav app waze.
Any ideas
Just as a note : be careful with this particular formula in Tasker. I use it as well, but the problem is if you're using, say, a navigation program. You open it up, Tasker sees it open, enables GPS, everything is right with the world. You're chugging along. You stop at a red light, and... get a text or something, and you tap to see it. As soon as you switch away from the navigation app, even if it's running in the background, Tasker will count that as "exiting" the program, and disable GPS (at least in my experience). Your navigation app will still run in the background but not have GPS to tell you where to go until you bring it to the foreground again.
Can you get Tasker/GPS to work on an un-rooted phone?
No.

Dangit.
I'm almost positive I had this working in the past but it's not now some reason. I'm running CM10.2 on a Skyrocket. All I am attempting to do is turn the GPS on or off using a task. I ran the task manually, everything else is working fine. Tasker has root permissions as shown in superuser, and just to be sure it also is a device administrator and is in the system app folder. Secure settings doesn't have an option for GPS in the free version.

Hi everyone,
I decided to reflash stock and i'm running into some problems with enabling accessibility services for greenify and pushbullet. Somehow I managed to turn these on, I have then turned pushbullet off with no issues. Trying to re-enable this I get the "Use Pushbullet?" prompt with the cancel and OK buttons. I am unable to click OK... only cancel works.
Does anyone else have this problem? I've reflashed about 3 times now... md5 of image is OK so I just wanted to see if you all can enable and disable accessibility services without any issues.
Thanks

I have this exact same problem with every single app in Accessibility... I threw on Lollipop and have yet to be able to click OK. It doesn't even register as a button. Hopefully someone sees this and has a clue as to what is going on.
I wonder if this is a bug... :S

I doubt it, or at least if it is it's a very small one since I have yet to see anything else about it. You're the first person I've encountered with the same issue, funny how you mention both Greenify and Pushbullet (I have both and I didn't notice the issue until after I tried enabling Greenify)
I can confirm it doesn't work for the Google builtin services either on my phone: Talkback / Switch Access

I've been struggling with this exact issue on both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 wifi. Flash to stock, setup my account, start the restore process, apps start installing, I wait until either LastPass or AutoVoice are installed and then I can immediately go in and enable accessibility for it. Anything after than and it can't click on the OK button. My theory is that you get one shot at setting whatever applications. It's definitely a bug that not app or hardware specific.

I found the answer for my specific case. It was Lux that was preventing me from enabling accessibility or installing from unknown sources. Sooo many factory resets and reflashing stock/rooting and it was Lux the whole time. Arggg...

I'm going to uninstall LUX and see what happens.

You can just disable it in order to have accessibility settings working again.

Holy guacamole! It was LUX... I simply uninstalled LUX and I was then able to click OK on Accessibility settings. I'll be sending an email to LUX devs in a few minutes.
Although apparently I could just have disabled it... LOL. Either way the devs have been informed

Wow... Thanks for this! it works now.. damn i wiped my phone 3 times :S. Ah well at least battery life is now rocking!
Thanks for finding the root cause! Seems like we're a bunch of people using the same apps.
GOOD GRIEF! This was so annoying. THANK YOU! This was driving me crazy. I am writing this on Jan 7 2015, I dont think the author knows this is an issue. I will write to him/her. Thanks again. On a Nexus 6 5.0.1
Same problem with app called Twilight. Pausing the app allows OK button to register.
Same thing for "good sleep pro". Highly unexpected. Big thanks!

For me it was "Bluelight Filter". Thanks for setting me in the right direction.
Not a Nexus 5 user but...
I still use a Sprint Galaxy Nexus (toroplus) but, it was Lux for me too. The two reasons I didn't think it could have been Lux are, first, after this same issue came to light with the install button on sideloaded apps, they made Lux auto pause on screens where their overlay could cause issues. Second, it's daytime where I am right now. The screen dimming overlay shouldn't be active during the day. Either way, I think I'll need to poke the Lux devs to inform them that their experimental work around still isn't working in the accessibility menu.
Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll just have to remember to disable Lux when I need to perform protected actions.
Thank you! HTC One M8 user, and killing Lux helped!
