New to installing ROM's. ( a few questions regarding apps and etc ) - HTC Desire S

Hello , i have my phone for some time ( htc desire s ) , yday i installed a new rom for the first time , a friend recomendended Reaper ( 3.0 ) soo i installed it , he gave me the zips . I would like to ask what's the easiest way to install apps , for example simpliest applications , skype , realcalc etc or games ? I can only use wifi during school , dont have wifi at home ^^ soo if i would have to redownload those apps from market then it would take a lot of time ( and one more thing , i don't even have market for some odd reason ) .
Soo in a small phrase : i would like to know how to download apps from pc and put them on phone and install them there and whats the safest way to download them.

Not sure why you don't have market without more information but...
...as this is questions, it should really be in the "Questions & Answers" forum, not this one.
It would help if you supplied more info, such as how you rooted your phone, where you are, what you mean by "Don't have market" - it's called Google Play now by the way.
Yes, you can download apps 'off-line' and install later, or you can just use the school wi-fi instead.

You can also connect your phone too your PC via USB cable and share PCs internet to your phone.
The market (as mentioned before now play store) should already be on your phone since you flashed reaper ROM.
Btw. mostly every time you install a new ROM you have to do a full wipe before and you'll loose all your data on phone (including apps). But you can backup your personal data with an app ( ) called titanium backup. It's also available on play store. If you do so, you won't have to re-download them again and again and again...
Sent by my fingers to your head.

You mean that you wiped the Cache and the Dalvik Cache? As posted above, you need to do a Full wipe - all partitions - before installing Reaper.

Once you have installed the ROM, you have to sign-up with your Google account if you want access to the market and other Google apps. This means either using a mobile data connection, or using your school wi-fi connection. Without doing this it is not possible to download anything from the market.
You can still find applications if you search on-line, and there are a few alternatives to the Google market if you need them - have a look at How To Geek
Sounds like your friend has only told you half the story about installing a custom ROM

You should read a lot of stuff here before doing anything further.
I'm sure you did not backup your stock system before flashing the ROM, right?

Unfortunately, if you don't try to learn from other peoples' mistakes then you will be bound to repeat them and possibly end up screwing your device beyond all hope.
Go to the "Dev" forum, read the stickies at the top of the page, learn how you should have done it in the first place - then you can work out what you need to do next to get it right

[Q] Where are the Pros at?!

Hi there,
I have a few questions and after trying the search function, I decided to start a new thread!
I am used to using Acronis True Image or Ghost on my PC, to backup entire Operating Systems. Is there anything like that for Android?
I would like to be able to backup a ROM, install another ROM, and then, if i want to, switch between them...
After installing a stock ROM again, I was surprised to see that it wasn't that bad at all...it was actually relatively quick. Why shouldn't I just remove all the crap of a stock ROM and use that instead of using a custom ROM?!
thanks,
Georgios
Yes inside of cwm there is a backup mode you can use. It does exactly what you mentioned just have to make sure your not hopping from a rom that's incompatible with another rom/partition etc,and you'll be fine. Other than that its your choice on how you like your phone. Me personally I would not of kept this phone without our devs on here I love their Roms and kernels. Imo

Backing up ROMs
Don't know about backing up the ROM, but you really should wipe your phone before installing a new ROM unless you KNOW otherwise. Afterall, each ROM will re-write parts of your phone's operating system. Wiping before each install will ensure you start out clean. There is a program called "Odin" that will make this an easy process. There are different versions of Odin and each one can perform different tasks, so read up on using it BEFORE you jump in head first. Odin can be used to install individual files, like kernals, or master clear your phone or it can take your phone back to stock. Most ROM devs will include in their instructions what you need to do to install ROM. Although I believe it's hard to brick the Infuse (unless you jump in head first), IT CAN HAPPEN!
Read Read Read!
Regarding restoring your programs to make it easier, Titanium Backup is probably the best at backing up your programs. Afterall, restoring ALL your programs can cost you alot of time if you don't have a program like the ones you use on your PC.
Note that you must pay for the Pro Titanium Backup to be able to use the "Batch" feature. The batch feature will allow you to reinstall selcted programs automatically without any interaction. Without "Batch", you will have to keep pushing the install button for every program you want to reinstall THE PRO VERSION IS WELL WORTH THE SMALL AMOUNT YOU PAY!
For me, installing ROMs is kind of an addiction. Installing the ROMs are fun. Granted they take a little time, but..........
Sorry to be long winded as I didn't know whether you were asking as a newbie to the ROM world

Thanks for the fast reply! I actually tried to create a backup/restore with cwm. it worked fine. However, I didn't try to bring back another ROM yet. I wonder if the current backup is going to be deleted if you install with cwm another ROM?! With Acronis/Ghost you install Windows, create an Image to another partition or hidden partition. You can then install another version of windows and do the same thing, create the Image, store it on another partition and you can then bring back which one you like!

Yes cwm is best for wiping the phone, and you should be able to change the path to.save if not just move it with an app like root explorer.

To get back to stock, I've used GTG's Ultimate Unbrick/Return to stock, found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
I just prefer using Odin. CWM is an internal program. Odin is an external program.
Just my preference

that would be difficult for most users, im sure you'd have to get into the recovery image and edit it a bit. you may just be able to copy the backup to the external card manually.
im a fan of stock-ish roms as well but im also a flash junkie, seems deodexed roms run a little choppier at times, i cant verify this but stock phones in the store never seem too laggy despite all the memory mods and "lag-fixes" we use around here. i think it may also have to do with the build environment for the custom kernels, some just work better than others despite similarities in the feature set and shared sources among the community. i reember a while back when i got my captivate a developer had a thread discussing toolchains and there effect on wakeup lag which was an issue early on in i9000 development.

[Q] Quick and easy Q for you (I'm going to assume..)

Ok. 2 things for you smarties-
A. Flashed MHX's superlite4.2 and lost my abilities to see, let alone download chrome and facebook in the Play Store(and probably more... havnt looked much further than that)
Re-flash?
B. Also, I havnt seen say anything about this yet, but in CWM (both touch and normal) when i go to clear the dalvik cache i get an "E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]" along the bottom when i click the "wipe Dalvik Cache" button. Note: this is not when i actually go to clear it, just when i hit the button before the no/no.../yes/no... prompt.
I one-clicked and rooted twice, and this was there both times.
***Edit- did some more searching, NVM on part B. Figured it out. Nothing to worry about!!
Thanks for your help! You guys rock!
try this first:
http://www.mediafire.com/?2bzkpwmwc652vn8
clear data under applications for google play, then install this within regular menu, from astro or any other filemanager
run and reconfigure. I you still can't find them then yes, perform a darkside/reflash
And yes, as you already figured out. "E:unknown volume" is nothing to worry about
thanks icenight89!
I ended up doing a darkside and flashing nexusmod ICS... Looks like it's more of what i want for the time being.

I already have the apk of it. I would like a fix to make it compatible with the ROM superlite 4.2 . I guess I'll ask on the ROM thread.

[GUIDE] Flashing ROMs correctly, every time

***original post copied verbatim******************************************************************
So I was rummaging around the dev section, QA, so forth. And I have seen numerous threads, questions, posts, where people have had issues with ROMs or just general left field issues that were resolved by going back to square 1 doing a fresh clean install of "rom.zip..
My goal with this thread is to contribute some insight and experience with customizing android devices in the way we all do... at square one, clicking the download button.... we also do not have a thread dedicated to this one subject alone, so here it is. I feel stickying this thread would be extremely useful, as so many people could see it right from the get-go and get valuable information from it.
Just getting right into it, I will say this, I have flashed (I'm sure) damn near 1,000 ROMs to various devices. Mine. Friends. Etc. And never once have I installed a corrupt zip file to these devices. This should never happen, and among other important details to any installation of a ROM, this one is the most important...
VERIFY THAT YOUR DOWNLOADS ARE GOOD!
How do you do this??? Well I will show you... it is with this handy little app called md5 checker from the play store. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE OF US.... should have this app, guys (and gals, because I know you are out there it is a free app. No excuses
What is an MD5 checksum? Trusty link to get the gist of it.. http://www.fastsum.com/support/md5-checksum-utility-faq/md5-checksum.php
Making this simple - I will break this down into steps. Follow this meticulously and 99.9% of the time you will not have an issue or be one of the random bugs popping up when everyone else seems fine.
1. Download md5 checker.
2. Download all zip files needed for your ROM. (whether you do this from your mobile device or a desktop/laptop it doesn't matter, because you WILL verify the file AFTER you have transferred it to where it needs to be allocated - your device). Basically, download it, transfer it.
3. Open md5 checker, the app is pretty easy to use. Much like a file explorer in its layout with the obvious differences.
4. Retrieve md5 for your zip files.
5. Verify them with ROM developer, or others using that particular ROM. Any discrepancies - back to step 2.
6. All is well? Boot to recovery.
7. Wipe data 3 times (you don't need to wipe dalvik cache, that directory is found in the data partition - wiping data = wiping dalvik cache)
8. Wipe cache 3 times (this sometimes does not need to be done either depending on whether or not your recovery wipes cache with data.. most recoveries will spit out some text during the wiping phase letting you know the details of the process and you'll see see something like this when wiping data)..
"Wiping /data...
"Wiping /cache
If you see cache being wiped, you are good. No need to manually wipe cache.
9. Format your system partition through recovery 3 times
10. Install your ROM. Reboot. Let it sit for a minute or two, reboot it again. If you are not installing a custom kernel, stop here. You are done, and winning.
11. Reboot to recovery, wipe cache partition 3 times AND dalvik cache. They are both there as options, for this reason - the goodies we install after a full ROM install.
12. Flash kernel zip. Reboot. Let it sit for a minute or two, reboot it again. You are done, and winning.
Interesting fact about all the ROMs I have installed over the years, NOT ONCE, have I ever installed something corrupted, and every issue/bug I have ever had with a ROM was a known issue. This also doesn't mean your particular device is always going to be able to run for weeks on end without needing a quick reboot. Sometimes its good to do the dishes, I get that. But my disclaimer here is for all to note, if you follow these steps meticulously, you will ALWAYS be able to say to yourself with confidence "nope, did it right, there is something else going on here." And thus you will be a greater problem solver and contributor to the community as a whole every single time you pose a thought or question regarding any problems you are having.
"Do it right once, instead of doin it wrong twice before doing it right."
We are nothing useful without useful information. Useful information = posting in a thread in this tone...
"Hey, installed ROM correctly/thoroughly, verified downloads, XXX is buggy blah blah etc etc... can somebody else here verify if they are or aren't having this issue? Thanks!"
Based on people's response you'll know if it is just you or a legitimate issue, in which case, you brought it to the attention of us all, and the dev(s), and you have now been very useful.
What you don't want to do is this....
"My phone keeps rebooting!!! Haaaalp"
The reason why you shouldn't post like that is because you will ALWAYS get a sour response or people will just ignore you. Or, they will reply with questions you should have already asked yourself... "did you verify your downloads were good??? Did you do a clean and thorough install???"
Long post, but I hope somebody will find it useful and utilize it. It will increase your experience with your android device in a positive way, as it has for me. Cheers
Ah yes i get random freeze screen with some ROM installer
why not format every partition 3 times (idk how recovery looks at this device, im used to 4ext on the HTC sensation) and the wipe data to set al parations right again and install the rom? even why wiping 3 times instead of 1?

agreed
since nand ram has its life time of cycle. wiping the nand for more than needed is some kind of suicide mission to your droid....
I disagree. If you are the type that flashes a ROM 5 times a day then yes that might be a factor.... might be. Each android device I have owned I have flashed a ROM/kernel to it literally thousands of times and nothing was ever damaged because of scrubbing the disk too much and flashing to it too much. Sorry, but misinformed about just how robust these disks are.
It needs to a must read for noobs
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Most definitely, wiping 3 times is completely unnecessary. Only 1 time is enough for the NAND to perform the wipe commands. Not only that, but also you're wearing out the flash drive by wiping so much, even though you flash a lot. Another reason to only wipe once.
First of all thz for this step-by-step guide, for newbie is useful.

1 wipe is more than enough
plus this thread should be in general section
I never face any problem with these steps (surely more then 100 flashing)
1.Downoad and flash ROM with Odin (odin doesn't check md5??)
2.Reboot, nevermind if stuck
3.Reboot to recovery, wipe cache and data.
Thats it.
If your counter is already raised, first make sure you have stock kernel and recovery
Reset counter
Start from step 1 above.

Broke my New phone Installing Gapps??

I just bought a Chinese phablet and was excited about the good deal I got for $250. The phone (Ginwave G503) arrived on Monday and I was disappointed to learn that the retailer did not install google apps as they do for some of their chinese phones. I figured I would just look around the internet and just install them myself. This proved to be much harder than I thought. I came across a German forum for Chinese phones and installed the google apps package that one user had uploaded to my system/app/ folder and it didn't work. I was told in the forum that It might not fork because I used some old files for Android 2.3. So they pointed me to a thread with a newer version and I deleted everything I had copied into the system/app/ folder and then replaced them with the new files. Then even less worked. My phone didn't ring anymore, sound didnt work, and the play store wouldn't even start at all anymore (it gave me a download manager stopped error or something like that). So then I figured out that those files were probably for Android 4.1 and my phone has Android 4.0.4. So then I found a package on rootzwiki for 4.0.4. I again deleted all the stuff i had put in the system/app/ folder and did a factory reset.
When I restarted the phone I was not able to install my ES File Explorer from my SD Card again. When I click on it it asked me if I want to install to phone or SD card, no matter what i select it says "X Application not installed". So I went into the chinese app store that was on the phone (called 360 followed by some chinese symbols) and actually found ES File Explorer on there. But when I tried to install it from ther, it downloaded and then gave me the same error. No matter what apps I try to install, I get this error now. What can I do? Did I break my phone?
If I did end up breaking the Rom and can't find a replacement rom for this phone online is there like a universal android version that can be installed on any phone? Would there be any way I could somehow play a new Android on my phone without having to know how to program something

At this point, it's not where he bought it from, it's what he did to it. Sorry to say OP, but you're very far up ****'s creek.
If you can't get ahold of the factory ROM and no one has made an aftermarket ROM for your device, you're going to have to learn to compile yourself. I wouldn't advise you do that, however. Based on your original post, you don't do any research before mindlessly flashing any old thing from the internet to your device.
If I'm coming off as a ****, that's because you want to call xda worthless when you clearly have your head up your ass. Someone might've tried helping you before you insulted the forums.
The only thing I can suggest now is using recovery mode to factory reset your device. This might only work if you still have your factory recovery; you never mentioned that you flashed a new one and I can't imagine you flashed anything to your phone without a custom one... But again, reading your OP it sounds like you just flash things all willy-nilly.
BTW, your device didn't have gapps because it's probably not approved by Google to access the play store. No access to play store = no gapps.

You should try (have tried) to install Android SDK (If you've not installed already); and install the *.apk through adb.
Check these:
http://www.xda-developers.com/xda-tv-2/pro-tip-number-4-installing-applications-using-adb-xda-tv/
[and]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879701
I don't believe that the operating system blocks "Google Apps / Play Store". Either way i'm not going to say that it is impossible. But it doesn't make much sense.
But like "rockingondrums" said; If your device doesn't have have "gapps"; it's probably because it's not approved by Google to access the play store.
No access to Play Store = No "gapps"...
(Never seen that happening though)
Also you didn't need to root your device for that. "Play Store" doesn't require Root Permissions...
In order to help you (and help yourself up); I've done research for you (just because i understand your situation).
1st of all you shouldn't insult XDA Forum. This Forum has loads of information scattered around. Just dig like everyone else... There's probably the info you need. Yes it may take hours, day or months if you have no idea of what you're messing with. If the info is there, just don't expect people to do the research for you...
But, XDA is far from being "worthless". I've lost the count of how many times it helped me; and what i've learned is priceless. (And i still don't know everything i want to know ^^)
2nd; [Get your Device Working]
If you haven't messed up much... (Like flashing a wrong Rom)
Use "Recovery Mode" to "Factory Reset" your device.
I'm not sure if the method i'm about to show, works for every device or for your device; but it's a good example.
On my device i would do:
- Turn off the device;
- Press and hold in the following order: Camera Button; Then Volume - and then Power Button; let it vibrate 3 times; and then release the buttons.
In other words; this will "Reinstall / Reset" your system. You'll see in your screen if it works. Just dont turn off your device in any way while it's executing that operation.
Note: It may be different on your device. If it is... You have to search for a different method that will work for you.
Search this forum, Google, or Ginwave Website (if it has one...)
After this; i recommend you to do some search and learn on how to backup & restore your device.
Search XDA Forum. Grab some examples, compare the info you've got; then backup that device.
3rd; If you've flashed a wrong Rom; then you really have to compile your own, as i also couldn't find a Stock or Custom Rom for your device.
Note: If you (ever) find a Rom for your device; remember that it has to be A ROM FOR YOUR DEVICE! AND NOT SOME OTHER. Otherwise you'll probably end with a dead device...
And that would be sad and wasted money.
Here's a good example on how to flash a Rom and a good place to start with:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flashing_Guide_-_Android
Do some more reasearch; and now don't ever say that XDA is worthless.
P.S - Experienced People aren't here every day and every hour just for you... Sometimes you've got to wait and pray for a god answer (lol - so true...).
I hope this helps solving your problem.
Best Regards;

If I did end up breaking the Rom and can't find a replacement rom for this phone online is there like a universal android version that can be installed on any phone? Would there be any way I could somehow play a new Android on my phone without having to know how to program something

Complete noob at rooting, need help

Hey guys
I was fed up with my phone being extremely slow so I decided to root it (Sony Xperia Miro St23i.
I'm trying to delete the useless preinstalled programs but theres a million on it and so it will take ages.
Does anyone know an app (maybe?) that will auto delete the useless stuff in a safe way without turning it into a brick (just learned that term **** yeh!).
Also: I just wanna do 4 things a lot: use my gps program (daily!), call (daily!), send texts (daily!) and check emails.
Other than that I just wanna play games once in a while, and take some pictures. Any good tips to download? Not like unknown small apps u like but the main stuff I need to install now I rooted my phone (biggest reason I did it was so I could delete this preinstalled ****e tbh).
Please try and keep it in re-re language cause I'm a complete noob at rooting

For root, chect this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/general/xperia-miro-st23i-official-thread-root-t2038174
BTW, choose the methode based on your firmware (to see this, open setting>About phone>Check the bottom) :fingers-crossed:
And, for the app that you want to delete, you can use rom toolbox (use google!) and please ask me for the app your going to delete
Cos i'm afraid your going to make your phone bootloop (just kidding!)
