Rooting/flashing - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I know I'm going to sound like a noob but I don't have any experience with samsung devices, I have spent most of my time with HTC, Motorola and Apple. I have spent 3hrs today searching and just keep getting more and more confused. The problem I'm having is phone is SLOW, I have never had a problem with a stock version of a phone like I have with this one. If I could possibly root I could just possibly remove some apps causing low memory and phone lag.
T-Mobile US Samsung GS4G T959V
1 - does root come with ROM
2 - does CWM come with ROM
3 - I heard there was another program to use to update other than the Kies app? What is the name of the app?

Hi
You really should use a custom ROM.
You need to have a custom kernel to get root, CWM and the ability to flash any ROM you want.
Use Heimdall one click method or odin (via the forum stickies) to get the kernel.
Once there just flash any SGS4G ROM other than CM7 which is still under construction and uses a different system.

Rom Help.

Hello,
i recently installed froyo and i just rooted my phone, but im experiancing a lot of lag after the root. Ive been searching and i have been looking on the forums but what ive gotten so far is to Rom my phone to fix it.. a lot of people keep recommandign different roms saying cog, or vibrant hybrid, etc.. but as i was doing research for people who might have the same problem i saw that someone said something about a lagfix? idk whats a good rom how do i get this lagfix.i dont know if thats in the rom or not but some help would be really nice. any suggestoins or anything, ohh and i NEED to have tethering enabled so if anything takes it away please let me know.
thank you
Most of the popular roms on the development section have setirons kernel which adds a custom clock work mod recovery to your phone. With that kernel you can install a bunch of different lag fixes depending on what you prefer. I am running mikey's doc rom with the ext 4 lagfix. Check out his rom. All you need is clock work recovery since you're already rooted and on froyo.

you said you are running this one correct?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818030
Yeah thats the rom I am running. I even got hsupa to work but you don't have to do that of don't want to. Follow the instructions and you will be set. Remeber to back up all your data with titanium backup and take precaution when following the steps.
Fyi if you brick your phone I am not responsible. (Doubt you will though)
Have fun.

Gingerbread

It's amazing we were supposed to so called have our gingerbread like 2 months ago, has anyone heard anything? Because I am trying hard not to have to root my Infuse, and I don't really have a way to root it either but it is so aggravating being on 2.2 still especially with such a great device.

AT&T never said an exact date officially, unless you go by what some customer service rep said on twitter. They only said it would be this year.

Just root it and flash serendipity or infused, or dlev, or any other gingerbread rom.
It's very simple.

+1 All you need to root is a comp, usb cable and your phone, rooting is quite literally one click (superoneclick)...unless you use HDMI religiously, the roms here are awesome gingerbread goodness even if unofficial.

dude, get the drivers from the samsung site, get heimdall 1.1, get visual c++ redistrobutable package and get the comunity kernel.
extract the kernel .zip and find the zimage
install the drivers
open heimdall
put the zimage in the kernel slot
put the phone in download mode and connect to usb
hit the flash button in heimdall
pretty easy

To make things easier on yourself, you should really find a comp, google "Superoneclick Infuse" and it should pop up step by step install instructions. (download link included)
Still, with the root/flash options, I too would like the official release from AT&T...the wait is getting too long.
Question -I assume I'll need to reload apps if I flash a ROM, correct?
I'll just leave this here...

[Q] SuperOneClick or Odin for removing bloat?

I just got my skyrocket, having faithfully used my Nexus One since it came out for att. While I don't doubt I will eventually hop on CM again once it's officially out for the skyrocket, for now though I have to get rid of the bloatware and get back the ability to tether my tablet.
I was wondering what was the best of the methods for just getting root, superuser, and busybox, without putting on cwm or anything else?

Good job compiling this. I have all of those myself and can attest to their effectiveness. Thanks for putting this together for the rest of the community!
Wow, just doing the renice tweak and adding the apps I used most drastically improved my performance.
Glad it's working well for you guys. Just compiled it when I was working haha love my job
My thanks are by mistake.(kinda assumed this would work for my phone too)
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2
All of these should work for your phone as none are really phone specific as for the renice one you can find a post about it somewhere on xda and edit it to your liking. SQLite, fugu, gemini/cache cleaner are all not phone specific.
My phone has been so laggy lately and the battery would drain so fast, it was very frustrating. Then I tried these 5 steps and the results are almost unbelievable! I unplugged my phone this morning and by the time I got done at work 9 hours later the battery was still at 80%! And no lag whatsoever.

I did these steps and I noticed that my phone is now faster I used to always gey redraws rather frequently, but I still get redraws, enough to still bother me. Advice on how to be faster? I am on stock FP1 rooted using twl.launcher as my main launcher and would like to keep this setup. I am willing to switch roms or anything, all I want is zero redraws, really hate it! Thanks and any advice is appreciated!!

Add this line to the end of your /system/build.prop and reboot.
Code:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
That should help some. It may not eliminate it completely, but it'll be the best you can get.
Also, if you're stock, consider either manually debloating or installing a debloated rom. The less you have running in the background, the less likely your launcher will be to close.
Hey guys I am new to the charge. I really want to root but I have some concerns first. For one I have already replaced this phone twice since I got it. If I un-root it will Verizon notice I rooted it at all? Also how safe is it? I really don't want a $300 paper weight. I rooted my old sch-m828c from straightalk and the phone wouldn't connect to the computer anymore; is that a concern with the charge? As from the last sentence I have experience with odin but my old phone lost the root somehow and i was unable to boot it back to stock. Is the charge better about stuff like that? Please respond with any help. (Best mods, safest methods etc.) Thanks in advance!

well first off, you're in the right thread. To adress your concerns:
1) If you use odin to flash an unrooted firmware on your phone verizon will have no idea that you rooted your phone.
2) Your first flash is scary but it's really not that hard. Just always use the pda slot in odin and you'll be fine. I have only messed my phone up once and that was because I wasn't following instructions properly.
3) And this phone has a history of losing root on some custom roms but all you have to do is go to the superuser website and download their cwm flashable binary and you will regain root.
4) As for best mods etc. that's why I said you are in the right thread check the link in the OP for the full guide.
best rom imo is tweaked 2.2 with stock kernel.
feel free to ask any questions.
Are the kernel tweaks compatible with the stock kernel? Or should they be run manually via script manager? From what I've read only custom kernels offer init.d support.

[Q] TMobile G2X Root and ROM advice for the complete noob

ok so here is the deal. my g2x is crashing like the hindenburg several times a day, very frustrating. Tmobile won't help since it's out of warranty. I need all the help i can get when it comes to doing any rooting and/or mods to the phone to get it to stop crashing so much. i have not rooted the phone yet, so advice on the best way for a numbskull like me to do it (superonecilck?). then, advice on what would be a stable mod or rom or whatever you call it to install on the phone so i stop being so frustrated. now mind you, whatever rom/mod etc that is recommended please make sure it is so easy a 2 yr old could do it, because i know me..i WILL screw it up!
any and all advice is welcomed. i am beyond pissed at this phone now and i need to keep from throwing it at the wall. Tmobile won't budge about helping to replace this, only grant me the full upgrade pricing early, so i can give them another $150-300 for a new phone, while new customers come in and get stuff free.
thanks to any and all who respond.

Have you installed the latest V21y software? That seems to have cleared up lots of the problems some people were having with the g2x.

i have not tried that yet....now that I know this I will try though. Anything is better than giving TMobile more $.
I first used this to gain root access:http://www.unlockroot.com/index.html . It's a simple one-click process.
Then I followed this guide from step 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715. I personally used CyanogenMod 7.2 http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/jenkins/2856/cm-7.2.0-p999.zip .
Optionally, you can also flash a kernel: Trinity ELP(http://goo.gl/XqDn2) and Faux52 LG (http://faux.androidro.ms/P999-CM-Kernel-052-sv-lg-stable.zip)seem to be the most popular... Instructions to flash the Kernel:
[ Installation procedure: ]
1. reboot to CWM
2. Clear cache
3. Advanced, clear Dalvik
4. install zip from SDcard
5. Reboot
Click to collapse
If one of the kernels gives you issues, try flashing the other one.
I'm pretty noobish to this as well, considering i only flashed my phone a couple days ago, but I used this procedure and it didn't give me any problems at all.
Thanks. We have full detailed guides listed for new owners in the development settings. Some people have issues with faux 52 kernel, if so try using 48 or 50 in place of 52.
Sent via G2x on CM7 b135.1 w/faux 52 kernel
Never had arbitrary crash problems with my unrooted stock g2x on either original Froyo or GB update. If your phone still has problems after the GB update you might have an app problem, or a hardware problem. Update to GB, strip all Apps, and see if it works. If it does, add the apps back in one at a time. If not, toss it.
