[Q] Formatting memory card, what do i need to keep? - HTC Sensation

Hi Guys, Over time my memory card has become pretty bloated with app data and things i no longer need. Instead of going through and finding all of these files to make space i want to format my memory card. I'm currently on ARHD 6.4 and have 4EXT installed and have backed up to my memory card via titanium (which obvs i can re-do once done so no biggy). to keep. To enable me to use 4ext to install future custom roms etc... do i need to keep any files stored on memory card or can i install this from scratch on empty memory card?

You can install from scratch on an empty once you copy over the ROM you want to flash.

Thanks k0zmic, (N00b bit) even though i did s-off, root, and been using custom roms, can't for the life of me remember how i installed 4 ext. where do i get installer for it?

You can get 4th ext recovery at the play store too! Its only a couple of dollars. Or you can install the zip file. I got mine from play store.

What is a "GS"?
If the "GS" is Android, you can try this way:
Settings | Applications | Manage applications | Downloaded | Move to SD Card

You can't do many with internal storage unless you root your phone. What i know about internal storage is cannot be partitioned.

How to install apps on SD
I did it many time and I think that to fully install apps on SD you need to know its steps:
1. Root phone.
2. Partition your SD card
3. Install app that help move all data app on SD, such as Link2SD, S2E, ...
all that stuff u can find on Google or just in xda forum. they talk 'bout that every day
But I think maybe U did it all but still got unsuccessful. I think 2GB internal storage is big enough to install app and U don't need to try anymore. Just choose what app to keep and what not to keep for your phone. GS III is a smart expensive phone, Is your matter deserve to try? I just have 180MB internal storage (Mini) and do a lot of stuff just to get more 500MB, but I lost 1 SD-Card dear
if you have a locked phone(not rooted) its up to every applications security settings if you can move it to sd or not.
This setting is deprecated on Google Play and new apps will have licensing service , but for now its up to developer choice.
thx all, i have find, i cgange a file sytem vlag if i think and work.
My sd card isnt detected
I was flashed and running with s-off. I was using 4K atom azul for the evo 4g. I wanted to be able to use my FFC but i couldnt figure it out with that rom. and then i decided to upgraded to the one that look like black beans but is made by team dirt. hated the fact i couldnt use my camera so i reverted back. after reverting back i got the 5 vibrations thing and black screen. Now i have my s-on and did the ruu. after several failed attempts my phone suddenly booted back to the 4k atom azul. i was stoked that i knew how to get it back but now i have no way of using the wifi or bluetooth, and plus my sd card is not found by any program says i have it mounted and when i go to settings to unmount it says to insert a sdcard. i have my 32 gb sd card in there. I dont know why my phone is no longer rooted. and i am scared to pull the battery out and try anything because of the simple fact i might not have a phone for another couple days and i about drove myself crazy not having a phone.
a little info:
I had s-off and idk what else... other than using amon ra for recovery image and formatting and reset factory data before installing another rom. it became an addiction to get another rom every week. and now i am stuck in the situation described above.
I have been doing the reboot over and over the past couple days before i got the 5 vibrations fixed back to normal, that the information below is what i remember from trying to recover...
supersonic evt3 ship s-on
hboot-2.10.0001
microp-041f
touch panel-amtel224_16ab
radio-2.15.00.11.19
oct 15 2010, 12:07:00
This above might not be exactly right.
I used a PC36IMG.zip file that i had after reformatting my sd card. it would not run the PC36IMG.zip file that i put on the root and recover my system so i had to do the ruu thing...
It would read something like this below...
Loading...[PC36DIAG.zip]
No image!
Loading...[PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PC36IMG.zip]
and it would successfully read the PC36IMG.zip but would not restore and a little scroll bar as it read the file would come up... i used fastboot usb and miraculously i have my 4K atom that i tried to reflash on my evo before it messed up.
I know that i still have s-on but it puzzles me how i have the s-on and running a rooted rom. my hotspot works and so does the GPS and navigation, i just can not connect to my wifi, or boot back into recovery without getting the black screen and 5 vibes of diagnostic so i am kinda stuck. My phone will send text and call out and let me download apps for what little internal memory i have on it; I hate i dont have an sd card to save pictures too, or and sd card to put music on to play in the car...
Thank everyone for your time, I just joined today but I have been a flashing freak for the last year or so once i figured out how to do it. I used unrevoked as my flashing software. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Usually my phone gives me the option to move recently downloaded or updated apps to the sd card...

a108b - Unlocked, Rooted, Running Stock ROM HELP!

Android Version: 2.3.5 Gingerbread
Software Number: 1.57.862.2
Anyone else have this model that can tell me what to do about freeing up internal space on the Stock ROM?
I've tried several of the things in this forum on the stock ROM with no success: Factory Data Reset (the apps don't re-populate for me), Link2SD...says it "can't mount" and gives me an error...Titanium Back-up works as far as moving some apps that I couldn't before to SD, but most of there .dex and temporary files still are posted to the internal memory. I do have a Root Explorer where I can go in and delete unnecessary files, but I don't know which ones are unneccessary...does ANYONE have ANY tips on how to save on memory. There's got to be some EXPERTS around here that have had this phone long enough to give some MUCH NEEDED advice. I've heard not syncing the contacts with Google and Facebook save on space? But how do I do that if they're already synced? What do I delete. What apps are out there or what can I install on a root, stock ROM that will benefit in COMPLETELY moving apps and there cache/data to my SD card?
I had 10MB free last night...I wake up this morning and I have 0MB...what is up with that? Where is my space going! Are there any apps that can read where my biggest files are?
Side note: I'd really like to keep this thing on the Stock ROM and not mess with the radios, etc...as it's supposedly a network unlocked phone. If I do flash ROMS will it mess with my default radios? Also where can I find the Stock ROM to flash back to if I do NEED to flash right now in order to save on internal space. I really don't want to lose features like the Facebook button, front-facing camera, etc.
ANY HELP IS EXTREMELY APPRECIATED.
Thanks fellas!

Yea, it didnt work for me..I think it's cause I'm on Stock ROM. Has anyone gotten Darktremor to work on Stock? If so, how?
The only issue that i can remember, is that your rom isnt mounting the ext particion
Im using a stock rom with the darktremor script, but in order to use the script i have to do this
Install the script in recovery
Particion the sd card( fat32 / ext4)
Boot the phone
I have to format the ext particion using a pc software to ext2
Reboot the phone
Use the terminal emulator or a2sdgui in order to use the script
Try this way and tell if it works for you

Stock boot.img doesn't have init.d support and therefore dta2sd will not work. You need to edit boot image to add init.d or google how to do it without editing. There is a nice tutorial on xda on how to add init.d support on stock rom without editing the boot.img

[Q] Root/SD card question

Ok, so I've rooted my Wildfire S, flashed CM7 on it, with the updated gapps files (gapps gb)
My question is this...Do I need to keep all those files on my SD card? Or can I remove them?
Also, having an "H" icon for my data is better than 3G, correct? everything I've read says that, but I'd like to know from a DAMN good source (you guys)

If you've installed all packages you shouldn't need to keep those on the sd card, but best to keep them on your computer in case you need them in the future.

Yeah the 'H' is for highspeed access, you'll get that in areas where you have best reception.
Thank you very much. Yeah I still have them on my computer, along with my backup.
I also have one more question, how do I make a partition on my SD card? And should I get a bigger one? I currently have a 2gb
Sent from my Wildfire S A510e using xda app-developers app
Not exactly sure of the context. Why do you want to create partitions?
If you are wanting to create an .ext3/.ext4 partition on which to install apps (I know people did this with the HTC Desire, because of the really low amount of onboard storage), the best tool for the job is a Linux based partition editor called GParted. Just download the live CD iso, burn it to a CD and boot from that.
You should get a new SD card yes.
A 32gb card will run you ~$20 brand new on ebay, just make sure your phone supports that capacity
Link2sd says to make sure you have a partition created on the SD card for whatever reason...I uninstalled it, and forgot what it said, but yeah....same reason. 512mb onboard storage = pure sh*t.
Edit: it says to do that for "symbolic link" whatever that means.
Sent from my Wildfire S A510e using xda app-developers app
Sure, well most apps like that will want an ext4 partition, which like I said can be created using GParted. Plenty of tutorials on youtube I'm sure for using GParted
Ok, thanks for all your help! It's greatly appreciated!

Migrate sdcard

I've recently flashed vjs ROM below to my old desire.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40191064
I've just got a new 8gb class 6 SD card to upgrade from old smaller class 2.
I think the apps for this ROM are installed to my SD card in some way.
Any tips how I can easily upgrade from old to new SD? I was thinking some kind of sector based copying technique could save me reinstalling ROM and apps? Or am I better to simply plug in new SD card, re flash ROM and reinstall apps?
Thanks in advance

ok that means that your apps are on the sd.
Which recovery do you have right now? and are you s-off?
Yes S off with clockwork recovery v5.0.2.0
Dont think it is significant but thought I'd mention that I did partition the old SD card when I had cyanogen 7 flashed to get more space for apps. I do not know if this partition still exists and if it is in use...I don't think so since I followed instructions for vjs 4.2.2 ROM.
I find partitions with android bit confusing which is frustrating as I've done it with Windows PCs for years

your partition is still there and its in use (all your app are on it). This is what you should do:
1. Install 4ext recovery (much better for the desire than clockwordmod). Go here: http://www.4ext.net/ Download the apk and install it to your phone. Then open the app and donwload/install the new recovery
2. boot into recovery, go to backup | restore, and choose backup
3. after its done reboot your phone
4. Take your old sd out of the phone, and put your new one in. Then follow this guide to partition the new sd: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513 (use the 4ext method and start at step [4])
5. Once its done reboot the phone.
6. Now put your old sd card into your pc, and copy all of the files onto the pc into a folder.
7. Take out your old sd card, and put the new one in. Then copy all the files over onto the new sd.
8. Put your new sd card into the phone, and boot into recovery.
9. Go to backup|restore and choose restore. Then select the backup.
10. reboot and your done.
Really appreciate your help. Will give that a shot and report back.
Thanks again

A littlebit off topic here, but I am also using that rom. Have been for 2 days now. How long have you been using it and have you had any issues with stability.
To the other guy what is the difference between cwm recovery and ext4 and why is it better for the desire if you don't mind me asking
Kind regards

i also used that rom for about a month. It was very fast but i kept having random reboots. I ended up switching to the one in my signature. Its not as fast, but in my opinion its more stable, and i'd rather have stability than speed.
4ext is a good recovery because it has a lot of useful features like partitioning the sd (cwm has this too, but its not good), usb unbrick, touchscreen, themeable, one click full wipe, etc... I used to use cwm, and i never had any problems with it, i just recently moved to 4ext and is great.
I have not noticed any reboots as yet, although I will look out for them now lol. Will have a look into that recovery.
Thanks for the advice

Couple of random reboots...no worse than cm7.2...I suspect some of reboots and lags I see are due to me not knowing what I was doing partitioning SD plus old slow class 2 SD

OK I partitioned new 8gb SD with 1024mb ext1 no ext2 and no swap. The remaining was fat32. Now I can plug SD card in adapter in windows PC and copy all files from old card to new sd, plug new sd into phone, boot to recovery...but no backup to restore! all the files I copied to the root of SD in windows (inc my nandroid backup) are not visible so I cannot restore my nandroid backup! In recovery all I can see is a folder called 4ext (using apply zip functionality simply to see if I can view files)
Plugging new SD back into windows I can see all the files again!

No.
When I copied files from old SD to windows the PC windows would not recognise the SD directly so I put old sd in phone, booted android then turned on usb storage and copied via usb phone cable.
Windows recognised new SD so I plugged SD card into PC directly (not using phone) to copy files to new card.
I suspect this process may be the problem but do not understand why.
Copied files via USB to phone with new SD card and then restored nandroid...seems to have worked but lags I hoped would be fixed with faster class 6 card still there bit a bit better.
Thanks for all your help

[Q] SD / Internal Swap

OK... I searched on this one.. and probably someone will point me RIGHT to the thread as soon as I post this...
Keep in mind that I am a NOOOOOOOb.... and probably don't belong in here... but hey.... everybody has to learn
so... I downloaded and flashed the SD/ Internal Memory swap... and was thinking of flashing an updated ROM to play with some more... my question is... do I copy the ROM zip to my SD card which NOW reads as my internal storage? OR do I copy it to the Internal Storage because that now shows as my SD card??
Or... should I scrap the whole thing, and flash it back to nothing, fresh install on ROM, and then reflash the SD card / Internal storage swap?
Thx for any help
I'm assuming you flashed the swap that @InkSlinger420 graciously provided for us? If so, it's my understanding that the recovery doesn't recognize the swap, just the rom. So if you put it on internal (which WAS external) when you go into recovery it'll be external again, if that makes sense. I would say put the rom on your now internal, then go into recovery and see where it is placed. Either way, recovery will flash it regardless of where it is. Just make sure (and always make sure) you have a backup of what you have now just in case. I can't stress that enough. I working backup is critical when doing the modding game! Also, are you using Philz recovery? If so, for the love of pete, backup your efs partition. Also very, VERY, important!

Philz recovery ... no... I guess I should back up? It's kind of a spare phone that I have been tinkering with just to try and learn... so I figured worst case scenario, I could reformat, and start fresh I'm probably wrong about that too?
Anyway, I went ahead and loaded the swap that yes @InkSlinger420 very graciously gave out.... so... here is what happened...
I loaded the new ROM onto the SD card (which showed as internal memory) Flashed it... and it ran perfect, it UNDID the Swap, so I had to reflash that file as well... now we are back to where we were, with a new ROM, and no backup maybe I will go check out Philz...
Philz is wise as @njstein had said backs up your efs partition that holds all the identifiers for your device to receive service and such.and, yes, if you flash a new ROM, you will need to reflash the swap zip, but as I have been messing with it,it still keeps your apps and such so after you flash ROM,gapps, and swap, your app data will still be there for apps/games..just need to re get them from play store manually or automatically, also may want to get a good cleaner for your device such as SD maid or clean master to help keep up with removing residual leftovers as well..
